I think we can all agree Ron Spomer is a excellent example of what a life committed to “hunting honest and shooting straight” leads to, a true gentleman. Ron is to people nowadays what Jack O’Connor was generations ago. Merry Christmas from Ontario
Growing up, Papa, a Marine, taught all four of his children how to survive, navigate, and fight. Then he began teaching us about weaponry and the use of them. A common sentiment has and always will be this simple- If you can hit what you need to, you can end the threat. Of course, it's harder in the doing, than in using words. I have gotten into many 'Lively discussions' with people over the past sixty years, about the effectiveness of the .223/5.56 caliber (Only one, of many topics), both for 'Protection/Military' and also hunting. Valid point. My counter is always this: What do you think the Primitive Peoples used, for all of our recorded history, BEFORE firearms were introduced? What's the 'Draw weight' of a wood or bone bow? A thrown or thrust spear? These People's not only lived, they thrived. I like this sort of talk. I like hearing people's opinions on it. I've found this is a good way to learn new things, or consider new ones and go from there. Thank you.
Never killed anything with a .500 but I’ve taken 14 moose with archery, I think most people would be surprised with the damage an arrow does. Be safe, be ethical.
I've only taken a few deer, & a black bear, but I've seen vids of moose & even bison taken with archery equipment. I will never underestimate the effectiveness of a sharp broadhead.
Reason I think 8.6blk will take off is because it functions like a mechanical broadhead suppressed with 4-6x the maximum range (could be more but I wouldn't due to trajectory)
Ron, thank you. I truly enjoy your content. For the 30-06 part: I have hunted with the 30-06 for the last 40 years, and taken countless large game with it. I will die before the 30-06 dies.
I just took my first buck with a crossbow. It was an Excalibur 340 mag at about 30 yd double long shot with a rage Broadhead. It was a nice little eight-pointer
On your reply to the M1A question, the M1A is a civilian version of a M14 chambered in 7.62 NATO/.308 WIN. The M1 Garand on the other hand is a different animal. It's a military/civilian semi automatic rifle chambered in. 30 government/ 30-06
That guy with the M1917 Enfield might want to look into having that barrel rebored into maybe an 338-06 or 35 Whelan. JES in Oregon does that service for an reasonable charge.
Thank you so much for sorting out the .275 Rigby issue, which James so eloquently pointed out. I had long suspected this, but had never felt compelled to research it. On that note and while talking about revolver cartridges, I think a .44 Magnum or larger pistol cartridge _necked down_ to 7mm would be a pretty good hunting pistol cartridge. Ignoring the expense and hassle of rebarreling and machining a new cylinder, what do you think of the idea? 7mm has been my favorite caliber ever since I first shot a 7-08. Happy New Year, Tarmaque (Douglas)
This comment is about the "river gun", the crown may have pits from rust. Since this is the last part of the barrel to interact with the bullet it is critical. He may need to have it counter bored. I suggest this may be the problem because he couldn't find any ammo that improved his accuracy. If barrel harmonics were the problem one load or another should have shown improvement.
22:23 my uncle has used a cross bow for years but he still takes the same amount of deer as he did back when he had a compound bow or even using a shot gun
According to the Barnes website, the 168 grain 7mm LRX requires a 1:8 twist, so does the 160 grain. You have to drop down to the 145grain for the standard 1:9.5 barrel for the 7 Rem Mag.
Yes that's correct, those are 100% copper, to get the weight out of copper, they have to be longer. Standard cup and core lead based bullets around 165-175 a 1:9.5 will work. I'm just chimming in😊
@@Deuceblank Thanks. Looking at some side by sides, copper bullets seem to average roughly 12% larger than the same weight cup and core. The 160 grain Hornady CX monolithic is pretty much the same size as 180 grain ELD-M, for example. Going by that, the 168gr Barnes would be roughly the size of a 185 - 190 grain cup and core.
To the m1a is the civilian version of the m14 it’s 308 chambered. I think he was not getting enough gas pressure to cycle the bolt. This could be due to the suppressor or in proper gassing, and a under power load is more likely. Im not a expert by any stretch, but I got two m1a and shoot them a lot.
I agree it sounds like a under gas problem. If the rifle cycles correctly now it was probably a bad low charge cartridge. Probably short on powder due to quality control issues.
Hey Ron! I have a question on 20in barrels. I recently picked up a 3006 model 70 (1999) in a trade. I was really excited to get a new stock and set it up for Tennessee white tail season. Unfortunately the accuracy is piss poor. Ive tried 5 different loads and it just throws them all over the place. I can get a good 1.25moa 3 shot group sometimes and then the next day itll shoot an 8in group. Id like to look into getting a new rifle and change some things up while I’m at it. Mainly I want to go with a shorter barrel for running suppressed or just to have a more compact setup in the dense hardwoods. What is a good cartridge for 20in barrels? Is 30-06 going to still have the 100fps advantage over 308? Would a more modern high bc round suffer more than a lower bc round? Is there anything about different cartridges that would affect velocity beyond weight and powder?
I started using a crossbow last year. I have not been able to practice archery with working my job and spending time with my wife. I decided to pick up the 10 point nitro 505. I shot a buck this year with it. As a experienced bow hunter, I will be the first to admit that crossbow hunting is not near the same as bow hunting. I would equate it to in-line season more than anything.
In regards to crossbows, I feel an age such as senior citizens or medical need requirement such as disability or injury that would not allow for a normal bow to be used makes the most sense with keeping any unfair advantages that a crossbow might provide at a minimum over traditional archery.
At the very least, Ron, you could put a red dot on it to get your sight picture. Pistols take much more practice to become proficient. Let's face it, a sight would be cheaper than the ammo when using that handheld artillery.
Listening to modern compound bow hunters decry a crossbow is funny. A modern compound bow with a peep sight, front sight posts (or a red dot commonly now), and trigger string release is more similar to a rifle than it is an unadorned self bow or recurve. It’s all relative isn’t it. Maybe the main archery season should just be self bows.
Not the same. sure you can go down the rabbit hole of traditional compared to compound but if you have hunted the ground with a vertical bow the advantage of a crossbow is night and day.. use what you want but to say crossbows are comparable to modern compounds is laughable.
@ I mean this politely, but I think you’re missing my point. First off I didn’t say crossbows were the same as vertical bows. The point I’m making is that modern vertical bows are so far removed from traditional archery at this point that it’s funny hearing people argue about whether a crossbow should be included in archery season or not. Both cross bows AND vertical bows are closer to rifles at this point than they are a traditional bow.
Hey Ron i shoot your favorite cartridge the .308 (hehe) and ive noticed that my drops at very short range {say 10 - 25 yards} are signifigantly different (maybe 4 inches) from my 100 yard zero. I cant find any data online and wondered if you could comment please?
Wood stocks, and the decreasing availability of Walnut. You don't have to use walnut ! plenty of Beech and Birch stocks made in Europe and Russia in the past. European Walnut is still available(and is prettier) also, you don't have to have the highest grade stocks, you can accept lower grade. It all depends if you like wood or not.
Is a dump truck better than a crotch rocket??? You're comparing apples and oranges with guns and bows.... As an archery Hunter, I can attest I would rather hunt with a rifle. Those American Indians, I didn't see them thrown away white man rifles and use bows and arrows!
For the life of me I don't understand hunters trying to drove away other hunters except greediness. However, long term running people off is not a wise idea to take away the hunter voting block
When it comes to archery the biggest argument against Xbows I hear is the purist argument. Well if that’s the argument then we should do away with the current compounds we have and not so we can go back to recurve. If we look at history they were using Xbows centuries before flintlocks were even a glint in the eye of the human races desire to be better and faster at killing animals or people in the name of conquest. So if the name of the game is tradition then Xbows should be the go to choice jfor hater everything else is too modern.

Crossbows fit in the muzzleloader season. That being said, i'm going to go partake in my state's purple composite halberd deer season.

Hornady just announced that they’re coming out with new high B.C .25 caliber bullets and are going to start making 25 Creedmore brass.
Monolithic bullets 160 and up in 7mm caliber require a twist rate of 1:8 or faster, its all about the length of the projectile not the weight.
