I think a strange point people are completely ignoring is that whenever Stipe decided to simply not just sit there eating kicks and went forward to pressure Jon. His ONLY answer to forward pressure was literally turning his back and running away caution to the wind. Just run away and restart at kicking range and there goes Stipe doing nothing until he feels like pressuring again (Which his corner was begging him to do). Now can anyone really look at that and say confidently: "Oh yeah Aspinall, Volkov or even Pav would fall prey for something like that and just give up the pressure" When Volkov was facing Pavlovich. He needed to establish a strong jab and straights while keeping himself away to deter his advances. All Jones had to do vs Stipe was turn his back and run back to kicking range. I don't understand how this performance gives people confidence.

All time, Jon jones is the goat but current jon jones is getting starched by Tom in 1-2 rounds in my humble opinion. Jon looked good against stipe but Stipe looked TERRIBLE. If stipe said fuck it and applied pressure for the whole first round it might have been a very different fight.
Those few moments where stipe landed some shots, Tom would do more damage and if Jon does that running away defensive thing, Tom will chase him down. I genuinely don’t even think it would be a close fight 5:03 this part right here, Tom aspinall is getting a finish

    • @Warpig9

    • @Rix54A
      @Rix54A 2 месяца назад +7

@@Warpig9 Not even chasing, Francis is not only either taller or exact same height but him and Jon have the same reach. This tall man defence of fully extending his arms to run away is not doing anything. Francis best tool remains a really nasty check hook he does when the opponent is trying to get away. In a striking bout he's cooked. There's literally no argument that can be made about it based on any of Jon's past fights spawning the last 5yrs.

MMA Che good analysis. I am in my late 40s. From my experience power is not the last thing to go. I think the saying sometimes confuses strength and power. Power is generated from speed more than muscular strength. That's why you see boxers are typically skinny with good abs but not huge muscles. They want to generate power through speed like snapping strikes like a rubber band. As you age those rubber bands age and they can't keep up. You can still be pretty strong though. I could probably still bench press what I could 25 years ago if you gave me 6 months to lift and get back into it. But could the current version of myself "beat down" the 24 yr old version of myself? No.

Any time you think Jon is going to have a hard fight, he steam rolls the guys. It's the fights you think 'Oh boy, this is gonna be a waste" that he struggles. The guys steps up, or "pulses up", to the occasion.
He is so fast with the grappling early at heavyweight. Before the action starts he is on a body lock and BOOM. Dude is down getting smashed or passed. I think his work with Gordon Ryan has really paid off. He is so good at using his range and not getting hit. He won't get in boxing range often as he uses teep and kicks to keep you at range.
I can totally see Tom blitzing him and ending it soon, but I really won't be surprised if Jones just man handled him. It's the fight to make, but I'm leaning towards Jones at this point. He is the closest to Mayweather of our sport as we got, the guy just doesn't lose and Aspinall has lost multiple times already.

@@mikerelva6915Two of his fights were controversial. Especially Reyes fight and Gustafasson first fight, and are the most debated of all his fights. To beat Jones you need a top striker like them with great takedown defence. Both Gus and Reyes had crisp boxing and was tagging Jones a lot. I think you need more than that to beat Jones. You have to be more creative with your strikes and not a head hunter all the time. This is why Jones is In a position where top strikers In this era have bad ground game. So you could say he has all the advantage In a fight with Alex or a rematch with Gane.
However, If their takedown defence have Improved a lot and are able to keep Jones on the feet like Gus and Reyes did first time, Jones will be In more trouble than he has ever been. Because they are not just top strikers but also creative Kickerboxers and Muay Thai fighters that can close the distance with him on the feet. They would target his leggs a lot more. And that something Jones is not very used to. He is used to opponents target his chin most of all. With them he will have to deal with their body kicks, legg kicks, knees and elbows. While time will just try to box with him. Which can do the job now that he is older and slower. Hence why he wants that very big fat paycheck incase he loses.

If Gane and Alex had his takedown defense, there is no doubt In my mind Jones would have been ko'd or tko'd In the championship rounds. Because they are not headhunters and would target different part of his body kicks because as World champion Kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters they are use to attack with punches and kicks In different ways but also used to being attacked that way. It pose a different challenge to Jones then what he is used to. He is used to stretch his hands to protect his face. With them on the feet he has to worry about every part of his body.

Do I think he would? Fuck no. Aspinall has great striking, is much larger and faster than anyone else in the division now and makes adjustments so quickly during the fight that it's tough to find things that might work on him. Jon's also a chronic tape watcher and Aspinall has... not a lot of tape to watch tbh. He absolutely vaporized the division in short order.

I think the weight will be a big issue for Jon when it comes to grappling with Tom, but when it comes to the striking, it's a different thing. Jones' kicks can hurt any heavyweight on the planet, no matter how big they are. Tom will be severely compromised after eating a few of those kicks to the body. But at the same time, Tom is much faster with his hands and one shot can put Jones down. The thing about Tom is that he's never been tested and Jones will test him. How Tom performs in the championship rounds in a mystery It's such an intriguing fight. I hope it happens.

I don't think Jon's kicks will be as reliable when facing someone like Aspinall. Tom's use of lateral movement and feints makes just chipping away at him a lot tougher than someone like Stipe. He constantly shifts from side to side, dips in and out of range and feints to force reactions.
I'd recommend checking out Mighty Mouse's breakdown of Aspinall vs Pavlovich for a pretty in depth look at it.
The question really is can Jon survive the first couple of rounds, and can Tom keep up that high energy fight style past R2. Though if Tom can somehow keep that pace up deep into the fight (I doubt he can), then Jon is probably in for a real rough time.

To piggyback on that, I hate when people seem to think heavyweights are all just terrible and easy to beat. While they definitely aren’t as technically skilled, the size and strength makes up for it. Thats why you don’t see long reigning heavyweights, you can lose to a less skilled fighter if they just catch you with something big or rip a submission with crazy strength. If heavyweights were trash, then the ripped 205ers would just move up and dominate the division but that doesn’t happen.

Much like Jon he’s not built for that weight class and only ever wrestle fucked Derek Lewis who has no grappling. I’d argue that stipe looked similar levels of slow/old last week as DC did in his trilogy fight. I’m not trying to discredit Jon (although I’m not at all a fan of his personality) his grappling is great and I’m super excited to see how coach Gordon Ryan makes a difference in a potential Aspinal fight. I just want to reiterate, although it would be silly to argue Tom is a better wrestler, I don’t actually think he needs to be to beat Jon. Tom’s basic scramble ability and the ability to find a whizzer like the spivac fight are good signs imo that would be silly to put to luck or something of that sort. Long story short, although size/strength is often beaten by considerable skill, size/strength with basic skill can absolutely be a challenge (see Stipe vs Ngannou 2)

I think you are selling Jon short. I think it’s fair to say Jon will not get submitted and he will not get taken down. I also don’t see a world where Tom wins a decision vs Jon. I just think with all that muscle there’s no way he will keep up with Jon’s cardio in championship rounds and I don’t really see him winning all three of the first 3 rounds. After rewatching the Arlovski fight I think Jon finds a way to stay out of harms way for rounds 1/2 and chips away at the body and gas tank of Tom and maybe edges out the 3rd with a late round takedown and some elbows before taking over in championship rounds. Also I think you’re selling Jon’s defense a bit short. He has probably the best defense we’ve ever seen and even if his speed is a bit slower than his prime his instincts are still the best in the game. Stipe fight included you almost never see him get cracked, he’s always moving with the shots and 7” reach over Tom will definitely help. Maybe Tom blitzes in and cracks Jon early but if he doesn’t get him out of there first 8 minutes or so I think Jon wins a legendary fight that goes down in history. That said Jon weighing in at 235 means he could pretty easily cut back down to LHW and challenge Alex for his strap maybe in early summer before fighting Tom at MSG in November for his final fight. Also I don’t think Tom will be able to blitz in on Jon like everyone seems to think, Jon is world class in all 3 styles of wrestling and his Greco trips and throws are literally made for someone who blitzes in ntm adding gable Stevenson (probably the p4p best freestyle and folkstyle wrestler on the planet currently) to his team just an iron sharpens iron type thing.

I don't even like Jones but giving aspinall too much confidence could end badly. Guy is an absolute beast but i still think jones can scrape it if it goes past 3 rounds. Apart from Francis or a cross into boxing to box Tyson, usyk or dubois Tom is probably his perfect last fight in the UFC so i don't think he's wrong asking 20-40$ mil for his last 2 fights then boosting across to PFL if he wants to try big Francis and retiring. All tom has to do is time jones and thats all she wrote. I highly doubt jones will survive a brutal haymaker to his chin. Jones best but still risky defense is to stay at range, stay away and beat tom by points but I highly doubt Jones... despite his kicks and elbows will be able to to escape without something landing on him. 12 years ago when Jon was a newly crowned LHW champion and Stipe had less than 10 fights under his belt?

Terrible take because people don’t realize he makes people freeze up due to his tools like low kicks oblique kicks teeps spinning kicks etc plus stipe has never faced a striker with that style and that reach of jones isn’t the same as fighting DC

No one would be talking about his age how big Jones prior to this fight he was the greatest ever ever ever and people showing in droves to watch him beat Jones and says he got beat by now about his age. He doesn’t have it anymore. Excuses excuses, excuses, and Jones beats Tom. You guys will pull another great white out of your ass

Then you haven’t looked at any mma media besides Dana’s interviews if you think nobody said anything about his age

Jones will attack that surgically repaired knee which also is the side he leaves out, destroying that knee will take away his power and speed and it’s the easiest attack Jones can do at distance

Excuses, excuses, excuses!! Had John Jones lost you haters would all be rejoicing.🤣 John Jones kicked his ass like all the others and Tom the hype Job Aspinal is no different okay. Jon deserves tens of millions for any such fight and he earned that right. Can't say that for hype Job Aspinal who knocks bums out for a living😄😄😄😄💯

I swear to god people are going to say I’m crazy, but watch the fight back. Jon pretty quickly in the fight realized Stipe is way way past his prime and was fighting like a literal bum. Jon purposefully allowed Stipe to land some shots and drug the fight out way longer than it needed to be to avoid hearing how bad a decision it was to make this fight. He tried his best inside that octagon to make Stipe look good without actually putting himself in danger. That’s why immediately when the post fight interview started he just talked about how good Stipe was in there. This man’s a master manipulator and gas lighter. Dude tried to gaslight all of us watching that fight

The two guys who I reckon could actually punish Tom for his lacklustre boxing defense would be Pavloich and Ngannou. And, well, we all saw what happened to Pav and we will probably never see Ngannou.

If Jones won't take the Aspinall fight, make a PFL vs UFC fight.
