      Hi, are you still practicing 2 hours per day and reaping benefits? I am curious, as i have been doing 2 hours a day for 1/2 a year and i am trying to research whether it's worth it in the long term. It seems very few people stick at it, most do an hour a day or an hour every so often.

    I think will definitely be benefited from studying Theravada Buddhism, ( The most original form of Buddhism) Because Vipassana is from Theravada Buddhism. Especially Abidhamma pitaka explains so much about mind. Things u said like the is story in ur mind is highly detailed in it in my opinion. U cannot see the end of the tunnel without this knowledge according to Buddhism. You will be stuck somewhere.

    Thanks for the video. Especially the part of sitting with your negative experiences is one I noticed.
    I dont have a teaching to explain this but I noticed. That I can sit with negative experiences but they become worse because of the attention they get. In life it makes me more anxious.
    But I feel like there is something behind it were you can really let them go...

    For several years I have seen numerous Dr.'s in an effort to try to pinpoint a great constant discomfort in lower back and underneath my torso. All testing and the eye-test says that I am very healthy for my age but I can't seem to shake his pain. Through yoga and some meditation I've found ways to be in tune with my body and mind to help myself find some alleviation. I can now sense the tiniest of blood flow, body temperature, and adrenaline shifts through breathing and meditation. Today I started my first day of Vipassana and am excited because I feel my lil miniscule energy super-power I"ve created to put out my internal fires can be now connected to a structured practice. Your video really helps to combine meditation practice with application to life and oneself. It's apparent your message is genuine which helps to create trust furthering our confidence and guidance. Thanks for the tips. Looking forward to the results in the days to come.

You'll learn pretty quickly that thoughts are just arising without your control, and you may finally calm the mind down enough to see that thought stream clearly which might be a little bit mind boggling at first. Don't worry though, the retreats are set up so that you can communicate with Assistant Teachers if you feel any overwhelm. There are support structures in place that will look after you. Bro actually I'm being in a quite similar situation. I'm feeling so energetic, but calm. I'm putting myself so much more out in the life, because I know, if something weird happens, I can meditate on it anyway 😝
    My whole life until now I had to deal with an anxious and depressed state, but now I'm feeling blessed with every moment. I take me and my mind so much less seriously, which of course also helps with the dating. I see every human just as a being, who is trying to get more happiness out of life.
    One quote for the meditation practice and the skill to be equanimous, which helped me a lot was from Shinzen Young: "Equanimity means radical non-interference with the natural flow of sensory experience"

    Hi Sam,Thanks for your detailed explanation. I know its not easy to put your vulnerability out there esp. with something like anxiety.Been practicing Vipassana for 4 years now.Im an Empath and have a very different set of pluses and minuses during and after each course. But as you said the light at the end of the tunnel keeps getting brighter :-) Unfortunately/fortunately have been missing the chance to go for a 20 day course twice because of Covid restrictions. But that was also an opportunity esp. The first time to see how much I was craving to go for it! Second time around it was a lot easier to accept it (exactly a year apart).All the very best with your practice and videos :-)

    Thanks Sam for opening this dialogue. I agree with your observations that sometimes we are present with sensations so that to make the unpleasant ones go away. This is actually the opposite of what we are advised to do. I fell into this trap for many years and as a result made little progress. Fortunately, I have now largely recovered from this tendency. The other observation of yours that resonates with me is that sometimes the advice of AT’s seem very mechanical and appears as if it is from a script rather than addressing your specific situation. My biggest concern with Vipassana as taught by Shri Gonenka is that we are asked to scan our bodies deliberately in order to realize impermanence and thereby improve ourselves and our habits. The problem is that if the “self” is an illusion then trying to improve it reinforces that illusion and thereby keeps us in the cycle of suffering. It is perhaps much better to let go of the notion of improvement go and see the reality as is. A more fundamental issue is if our meditation effort is driven by “ego” to do something to get something, how can this ego see the unreality of itself?

    • @SamRoff
      @SamRoff  3 года назад +1

      Very very interesting. It's fascinating how the Goenka technique may initially imply that there is a self - almost like it's up in the head beaming attention down on sensations like a lighthouse, thus re-inforcing the notion of self - that I am the awareness that is observing - that is located within the confines of this limited head. Makes me wonder if a combination of 'do nothing' practices like in Mahamudra Buddhism combined with the laser-beam like investigation of Goenka body scanning is more pragmatic for awakening. That said, mixing techniques may be harmful as taught by Goenka in his analogy of digging many wells without committing to one and getting to the root. Ultimately, I believe Goenkas technique is complete if you listen closely and will take you to where you want to go - IE, no self, emptiness, nibanna.
      And yeah the in 'order to mind' as Joseph Goldstein would call it is Brutal! Being with a sensation in order for it to go away. I still find myself doing that sometimes, but usually I gain some meta perspective eventually to see what was going on and relax with some wisdom. I think this is where the knowledges of the progress of insight is incredibly helpful. When first starting, sometimes students may NOT have enough equanimity to be present with sensations and may get frustrated when hearing the instructions - every moment aware, every moment equanimous. When in reality, they don't have the equanimity threshold to do that. This student might benefit from hearing 'every moment aware, every moment TRYING your best to be equanimous'. Anyways, that's my blog post of a comment done haha. Let me know what you think

    • @roopeshranjan1
      @roopeshranjan1 3 года назад

      @@SamRoff I do think Goenka’s teachings eventually will help us see impermanence and not-self nature of thoughts, emotions, sensations etc if practiced wisely. However, there is a real danger of self-improvement/self-enhancement trap and meditation being judged good/bad which can distract us from the goal of truly seeing self as illusion and may even reinforce it. So, in that sense it can easily become a trap to get to various vipassana realization stages experienced by the ego. This is the dilemma I find myself in with regards to this teaching. Perhaps, the “do nothing “ approach of Zen might have fewer traps. However, even there the ego decides to do nothing so it’s not truly “do nothing”. In summary, as long as we are in the realm of ego and view it as self - there is always a trap. The line between self-enhancement and the ability to see it is illusion gets quite blurred and requires a lot of wisdom to tread carefully. My response is getting long as well. It seems, perhaps a blog may indeed be useful to carry on these discussions in depth.

    This is something I learned intuitively over the years of my childhood. The common inability for people to comprehend this by default made the everyday life seem like a big weird joke that everyone was in on. I like the way you describe it as becoming aware that you're a video game character. Just as a tip though: There is a darker path which you can also take on this meditative journey of yours should you choose to do so...

      this is one thing I've been thinking about recently. Vipassana is not the only way to gain this knowledge and experience. Unfortunately, this is currently not incorporated into any education system I know of. So it's mostly a matter of luck if one learns this by oneself. I've met many people who have learned this to varying degrees by themselves.
      I'm curios to know, what do you mean by this darker path?

    I don’t know if you know how lucky you were to have the positive experience you did that first time. I’ve done around 25 retreats a various types over the course of several years, and I have never left one of them feeling a sense of high or bliss or peace. The alternative of trying to face life, without some kind of meditative or contemplative practice, sounds even more scary. By the way, in the meal after the retreat was over when we could actually speak, a young woman across the table, asked incredulously, why would anybody ever again spend their life energy doing such a practice?obviously she felt like it was very divorced from Life. Another older participant, and I just looked at her and said, well, let’s see how you feel about that in 10 years.

      Meditating at night time has never been too much of a problem for me. Like the morning, I've developed somewhat of a routine which involves meditation as part of the process so it's never really an issue personally. Feels strange to not do it and notice I can feel ungrounded if I don't. :)

    Hi Sam. How has your experience with sleep been? Have you experienced reduced sleep quota? Or ability to fall asleep very fast? Or any other changes?

    • @SamRoff
      @SamRoff  3 года назад +1

      Hey mate. In daily life sleep hasn't changed that much personally in terms of duration. I typically still sleep for 8 hours. Sometimes, if my equanimity is strong this seems to rest the mind and I wake up after 6 hours of sleep feeling well rested. On retreat, it's a different story. I had nights where I naturally woke up after 4-5 hours of sleep feeling fully rested. I would wager that it's correlated with equanimity. Practitioners who have stronger equanimity throughout the day on a consistent basis are in a rested state of mind, thus requiring only around 4 hours of sleep sometimes. Plenty of studies have backed this too, Vipassana seems to speed up sleep cycles so more happen in a smaller time frame thus requiring less sleep.
      I used to have trouble getting to sleep dealing with anxiety, but now my relationship has changed to that entirely. I no longer have an attitude of 'why am I feeling like this'. It's now more acceptance and in the frame of mind of 'okay, this is how the mind is acting based on causes and conditions. I'll read for a bit or try something to still the mind'. Overall it's been really great for sleep health.
      Hope this helped ;)

    • @123chuppah
      @123chuppah 3 года назад

      @@SamRoff Thanks for your elaborate response. I doubt equanimity is possible for mortals such as myself, but even sleeping within 5-10 minutes would save me 1-2 hours everyday. My main expectations going in are better sleep, better focus, and handling anxiety. I have been binge watching videos on your channel and preparing myself for the the retreat that begins on 10 Feb!
      I also wish to work on my inaction, which has been a huge part of my life. I am good at making plans but never following up on them because I get easily distracted by small things. Even the smallest of achievements make me extremely content. For example, doing 1 pomodoro of 25 mins, when I have to do 10 pomodoros in a day. Maybe vipassana will help me critically analyse my behaviour.
      I have been able to survive extremely well on deadlines until now. In 3-4 months, I will be joining a Private Equity firm where the hours will be insane and I will have to be self-driven and take initiatives! Left to myself, I will not do anything. I am a bit scared that I might embrace anicca in a different way and leave my work altogether!

      @@123chuppah Really awesome to hear you have a retreat coming up man🙂. Very similar goals to what I had going in. Vipassana will definitely help with those, consider it a meta skill that will improve many many facets of life. Including procrastination (regarding your pomodoro studying). You'll learn that what's causing you to procrastinate is just a sensation in the body, that once you see clearly through the lens of vipassana it's much easier to let go. It won't be the silver bullet, but it'l help provide more friction. For instance, I still find I sometimes procrastinate and watch a RUclips video over a Deep Work session but it's a lot easier to now realise the impermanence of the resistance I'm feeling to working deeply and return to the task at hand.
      Makes my day hearing you've been finding a lot of value out of the content man. Funny, 10th of Feb is my birthday. Very keen to hear how it goes for you!
