  • The Jeremy White Podcast presents Cory Churko!
    Cory has been involved with #ShaniaTwain for over two decades and played a big part in the sound of her monumental album "Up!". Cory was Mike Shipley's mix assistant at the time and he gives up some in depth facts about the process of mixing one of the most influential albums of the early 2000's with #MuttLange! He goes deep into how mixing frequencies out of syllables made a better mix and how Nigel Green was brought in to help finish the job. Also, was Brad Pitt supposed to be Luke Skywalker...?

    Guys. Mutt is my HERO and I live with these records but it’s so good to hear this. All of it is my thoughts exactly about “Up!”. It’s literally my bible for production and mixing. Mutt is the greatest of all time and a true master. So enjoyable to be a student of his work. I dream of working with him on something. Obviously, that’s a big and maybe unrealistic dream, but it’s a good motivator! I also love Shania and her music so much! Just a match made in music heaven with those two and Shipley and co.

    The Up Tour Chicago Live DVD is my favorite live concert. I was born in1960 so I was 14 when Aerosmiths first album was released. I grew up listening to mostly blues-rock, hard rock, and metal. Obviously, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Ozzy, UFO, Motley Crue but I also liked Mothers Finest, Average White Band, Yes, Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, Journey, Dire Straits (just the first album), Supertramp, SRV and a couple of hundred others I can't remember off the top of my head. At 21 I had never run sound for a band and wasn't looking for a job doing live sound but had a job doing FOH fall into my lap. I toured with a club band for about 6 years and this was back when club bands had management and played Wednesday through Sunday at a club before moving to the next town. When that band broke up I got hired as the house engineer for a club that had a house band. Both bands I worked with had very accomplished musicians. In 1992 got hired to do FOH for a band that was on the verge of getting a record deal. That band was called Brother Cane and in 1993 they released their first album and started touring. Over the course of 3 albums, they toured with bands like Skynard, Bad Company, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and many others. I have done sound at every level and I've watched and listened to literally thousands of bands over the years. I was at home in 1995 and had DirecTV on and a special came on about some new country artist I had never heard of. They started by telling her story and how hard her life was growing up. I didn't really care anything about country music but as the story of her life unfolded I couldn't stop watching. Of course when they told the part about her first album not selling and how Mutt Lange had co-written every song and produced the second album that really got my attention. When I heard and saw the video for 'If Your Not In It For Love' I was completely sold on this kind of country. The drum sounds on that song were insane. Prior to touring with Brother Cane, I use to have 3 SPX-90's in my FOH rack and I would use one just for its sample function to grab a bass drum sample from one of the Def Leppard CDs and trigger it and blend it with the BD mic. In 93 when I was working with BC, Alesis came out with the D4. I bought one the first day they were available and use one to this day to blend the D4's 'studio kick' with a live mic. Shania's live drummer J.D. Blair was born in Vegas but grew up in my hometown Hunstville, Alabama. She played here twice that I remember but I only saw the first time when she had the same band that played on the Chicago DVD. That band was awesome and I wish she would go back to that same style of live show. I'll go see her in Vegas when that starts back up if I can get tickets.

      @@JeremyWhiteShow I don’t remember which CD I was using. I do remember the song either started with the drums or maybe drums and an instrument that was hard-panned which allowed me to get just the BD from the opposite channel. I kept a couple of board tapes of Brother Cane and have the 1993 show where they opened for Skynyrd and Bad Company in Huntsville at the same arena I saw Shania play. I filmed Brother Cane filming their first music video for the song Got No Shame. A couple of years ago I took the audio from the Huntsville board tape and synced it to a portion of the music video shoot but filmed from my perspective filming them being filmed. I’ll post a link to that video when I get back to my house. I’m replying on my phone and it will be much easier to do on my laptop.

      @@JeremyWhiteShow Here's the video I shot of Brother Cane filming their first music video. The audio came from the board tape. The board was a 52 channel Yamaha PM5000 (PM5000-52C) recorded with a rack-mounted Nakamichi Dragon. The video was shot with a JVC 8mm tape-style camcorder, here's the video: ruclips.net/video/Cx4yTH1OiOE/видео.html
      It's been since I originally posted this that I've seen it. Scott Collier's meter is like a metronome. The audio from the live show matches the CD that the band is playing along with, almost perfectly. I faded the board sound to the camera's built-in mic towards the end of the video. All of the smoke that looks like Glenn's SVT is catching on fire, came from a moth that landed on a Zenon light that was backlighting Glenn's rig.

    Sick interview, Jeremy! I love the Shania records. But I have 2 questions for you! One is why is there no mention of Brent Mason in this interview? He played guitar for all the Shania records, so had a huge impact on the sound. And also, do you know how much Mutt wrote compared to Shania? I know all the songs were written by both of them, but did one do music and the other lyrics, or did Shania write the song, and then Mutt added to it? I'd love to find out! Cheers!

      @@diway18 Yeah I reckon that too after listening to her new album. Maybe 2 good songs. But the rest are average. Plus no cool instrument parts! No guitar riffs or licks, no fiddle solos. Nothing exciting happens musically. It's pretty disappointing

    • @diway18
      @diway18 Год назад

      @@matthewtzivakis9567 The new album "Queen of Me" and the NOW album are both exceptional on their own time.
      Both albums showcased what Shania can artistically do apart from her old records. NOW album was too dynamically multi-genre whilst QUEEN OF ME album made me actually think that Shania is the Queen of Pop and that Madonna was just her senior.
      I underdtand that you were so into the riffs, solos and any instrumental parts as it were during her Woman in me, Come on over and Up album but nowadays, music production became different. Its like DJing became sonically a thing, fusioning old with new and and that is the sound that the younger generations are into.
      Shania was able to manifest that factor with her Queen of Me album. It's denitely "unashamedly pop" said by a certain critic.

    • @matthewtzivakis9567
      @matthewtzivakis9567 Год назад

      @@diway18 I actually don’t mind NOW, but Queen Of Me just seems cheesy. ‘Get litty in the cup’ is one of the worst lyrics I’ve heard. I get that it might be what the younger generations are into, but I think that’s also the problem - she’s trying to sound contemporary and appeal to the younger generations. But in the 90’s she went her own way and did what she wanted. She didn’t try to appeal to anyone and that’s why she was a mega star. But you’re right, that’s what I love about the woman in me - the fiddle solos in ‘Boots’, the pedal steel in the ballads. The double time in ‘Any Man of Mine’. I get that she doesn’t want her new records to sound like her old stuff, because she doesn’t wanna be associated with Mutt.
      I also have issue with the lyrics in the title track. Go back to the woman in me and she was so feminine - the woman in me needs you to be the man in my arms. In queen of me she says I’m a queen, I don’t need a king, so keep your ring. It’s just a different Shania and honestly I’m just not much of a fan

    • @diway18
      @diway18 Год назад

      @@matthewtzivakis9567 yeah!
      She didn't have to prove anything anymore. At least she gets to provide unseen things about what she can artistically do instead of being repetitive of the old flavours.
      We are growing old and we lose relevance. All the more I embrace and understand that the artistic likes of the younger generation is somethi ng definitive on their own world just like how definitive Shania was during her prime and during our musical awakening...

    As a singer always interested in helping other singers. I thought his comparison of squeezing the balloon was great. The only thing I think he could have worded better was saying the high vocal parts were not falsetto. It’s a touchy topic among singers but for me it is falsetto but just with a different mouth shape. A lot of young singers think not falsetto means bringing the chest voice up super high. This of course will wreck your voice trying.

    Mutt had the bass real tight! Most producers of country music would not do this! 🙄
    As for Simmons drums, Terry Bozzio used them when he was in Missing Persons. Many other New Wave drummers used them too! But so did Jim.Vallance in Tears Are Not Enough 🇨🇦.
