    Thanks for clear comparisation. My choice remains the Sony FE f1,8/35mm. I like pocketability combined with high quality. Perfect combo with Zeiss f1,8/55mm and Samyang f1,8/24mm. You never need a bag.

    The loss of sharpness is not due to the capabilities of the optics (what I experienced in the past, when this was a common problem for Sigma lens) only the focus motor stops in the wrong place (not in sync with the Sony bodys yet perfectly).
    If you look at 5:50 -> on the Sigma lens the beard and eyebrow is much sharper than with the Sony GM, so the sharpness is not specifically (100%) in the eye.... it is in somewehere front of the eye (or in the eyebrown). Also the cap is much more blurred in the Sigma than the Sony. According to them, the whole focus line is shifted (front focused). Since it is already shifted at close point distance, if you increase the target distance (full body photo at 6:30) makes it even more visible / front focused.
    This can be easily solved by Sigma with a software update within a few weeks. After that, it can be interesting for (me :) ) a new comparison!
    Thanks for the video, I look forward to the next one !! :))

      Ah Thanks so much for sharing! Yeah, that’s something I actually was thinking about it - it’s a pre production unit, possibly af can be more calibrated with firmware issue. The only thing was that in some of the further distance images I couldn’t actually tell where exactly focus is. But let’s see if we can have some updates from Sigma!

      Back focusing is not fixable with firmware updates, but you can correct it either by sending in the lens to a professional or trying to calibrate it yourself using the Sigma docking station and a distance chart (or something like that). However, general autofocus accuracy can be improved with firmware updates.

  • @kevlarnegative

    I feel like this review was biased (Sony ambassador, duh...) but still very good. My pick would be Sigma as it's exactly half the price of the GM and 98% of the performance. Also, Sigma 1.2 is about 200€ cheaper than the GM.

    • @kevinrodriguez9659
      @kevinrodriguez9659 2 года назад +4

      Well, now you’re being biased just because it’s cheaper. The sigma 1.2 weighs a full kilogram and some change, is not as sharp around the corners or in general, it’s twice the length and in the USA the 1.2 is actually 100 dollars more expensive than the GM. Also, sigma has no OSS. The focus ring you basically have to fill 180 to pull focus and it has a slight delay. You’re probably gonna argue the GM has focus breathing so before you say it, on the a7IV you do not have that problem.

  • @zenjitsuman
    @zenjitsuman 3 года назад +10

    I have watched several reviews and read written reports. My own viewing of images suggests to me that the GM looks sharper
    mostly because of its better Micro Contrast which always makes an image look sharper. This is why Zeiss older lenses
    always looked sharper, they were more contrasty. You may be right that on a Sony body the GM focuses more precise.
    Tack sharpness can only happen at the point of focus. Also, on a gimbal the weight difference might make a difference, and
    for video I think the GM might perform better.

    I'm so glad you did this comparison video! I'm going to get a Sony 35 GM soon, but when this Sigma came out, I wanted to know how they compared. I've owned Sigma lenses in the past, but usually end up sticking with native Sony lenses instead. Now that I've seen this video, I think I'll still go for the G Master, but well done to Sigma for making what looks like a great lens!

  • @oldDan-l1c
    @oldDan-l1c Год назад +4

    pretty surprised by the responses here as my immediate reaction was the sigma lens rendered more 3D pop, more characterful bokeh, more contrast, and a somewhat Leica or film like look overall. Absolute sharpness goes to the GM by a bit, although that isn't something I tend to prioritize.

  • @bondgabebond4907
    @bondgabebond4907 Год назад +1

    Looking at the close up image of the subject with the green cap, glasses brought out the reality of image quality (5:55). The focal plane is different, rendering the mustach soft with the GM and sharp with the Sigma. There is no difference in quality from what I can see in the closeup. It's that the two lenses were slightly focused differently.

    Great comparison. Interesting differences when it comes to sharpness. In the first front-facing test, I think the focus point is slightly different, ie. the GM has focused on the eyes and the Sigma on the frame of the glasses. This is why the label on the hat and the hair to the side of the face is sharper on the GM, while the beard hair on the same or similar focal plan of the glasses is sharper on the Sigma. With the longer distances, I would be curious to know how they compare when manually focused. A couple of years have passed since this review, so would be great to know if these focus issues have been fixed in firmware updates?

    The slight missing of focus reminds me of the 40 Batis. At certain distances it would never be focussed on the actual eye, always the eye brow, hat or something else slightly in front of the eyes.... even when using AFC and eye AF. I switched to the Sony 35mm f1.8 and problem solved. I changed nothing in my settings or technique.... it was just the 3rd party lens wasn’t performing accurately. And that’s despite the close collaboration between Sony/Zeiss (and I believe Tamron actually manufactured the lens). So yeah, for me, it’s Sony all the way from now on. BTW, I did have a Tamron zoom and that focussed perfectly so it must vary lens to lens.

    Sigma looks to have nicer bokeh and I think they have prioritised rendering over absolute sharpness. Sony has gone all out on sharpness, Interestingly the Art lenses for DSLR's also went all out on sharpness to try and offer Otus performance at a fraction of the price, but the rendering was clinical. I'd still grab the Sony because I like to get in close and do floral portraits and the Sony has 0.26x max magnification vs 0.18 for the Sigma and the lighter weight and smaller size is welcome. Still the Sigma is exceptional value. But IMO the nicest 35mm for Sony is the Voigtlander 35 f/2 APO.
