    The only thing i would recommend is a diagram or definition popping up on screen when you use terms like “Hyzer” or “Anhyzer”. Those are not normal terms people know before coming into disc golf. You could also show the flight paths of discs and highlight which part is the finish (fade) and the turn in flight.

    I’d also heavily recommend a judge as a putter. It’s relatively cheap, at 10$, and an a staple of the sport. You can pick them up almost anywhere stock up them use them as practice putters, and just a very true flyer.

    My dad has been getting into disc golf with me this year. He played a bit in college, but that was about 3 decades and 7 knee surgeries ago. Started him out last month with a Z Zombee, ESP Buzzz, and a Jawbreaker Magnet. Later added in a Heat for him. Glad to see I chose well.

    New guy to the game here, played for the first time this weekend and looking to get into it more, but I’m definitely feeling like a lot of vocabulary here isn’t explained. Some of the terms I’m sort of able to piece together what you’re talking about, but by halfway through I noticed myself scrolling on my phone because I couldn’t keep up with the mile-a-minute terminology. Will definitely end up rewatching this as I learn more about the things you’re mentioning.

    I have been playing too long to get anything out of these videos, but a good video. I like when it is highlighted that stick with understable/straight putters and mids.
    Since this is a Discraft video, I highly recommend to catch with a friend e.g. with an Ultimate Ultra star) frisbee or J-Star frisbee. Once you learn to throw that cleanly so that it doesn't turn into a roller (on its edge like a car tire) then you can throw almost anything. This does not apply only beginners.

    The plastics made a big difference for me when I first starting out less than a year ago. I used the baseline plastic in my starter kit. For midranges and the slower drivers, it is good to start with but not for the putter. Putter is definitely all about feel. Discraft's Z-Lone plastic had never felt good in my hands, but the ESP plastic sure does.

  • @darkxxxi1979
    @darkxxxi1979 3 года назад +1

    In my personal opinion and I’ve heard a lot of other really good players say this too. Is to start off by learning mid ranges and putters. Don’t even focus on fairway drivers or distance drivers. Because as a beginner you shouldn’t be trying for distance. And also decide your courses carefully. Don’t go and play a championship course as a beginner cause it’s not gonna get you used to those simple lines that are essential for disc golf. It’s gonna be about difficult lines that most beginners can’t learn. Also make sure to learn how to throw BACKHAND first, one of the biggest mistakes I think I made in my game is learning forehand first just because it felt more natural and comfortable. Both are a necessity in your game but when your first starting learn backhand. Also if your a point to where you feel comfortable using drivers, I suggest using fairway on more wooded courses and technical lines and distance drivers obviously for more straight forward lines. A fairway is just gonna be able to hold that angle more than a distance driver. Also when it’s windy out I also suggest fairway drivers or even a mid range if possible. Just because distance drivers are gonna have more of a chance of catching the wind and messing with your line. But for the beginners have good rounds and be patient. Form and consistency come from practice and to practice it takes time so just be patient and don’t get frustrated and have fun.

    Great video. Couple of thoughts
    Define terms like turn, fade, flip, finish. Beginners may be lost on the terms we take for granted.
    Also, you may want to cover the rating numbers on the disc as part of defining terms. What does each number mean, for RH and LH players.

    • @Jason-ce1vt
      @Jason-ce1vt 2 года назад

      Can you explain that to me? I watched this video to figure that stuff out.

    • @orenconner
      @orenconner 2 года назад +1

      @@Jason-ce1vt For right handed players:
      Turn is the drift of the disc from left to right
      Hyzer is the angle of the disc when leaving the hand, tilted downward away from your body.
      Flip is the tendency of the disc to fly (flip up to) flat after being thrown on a hyzer angle.
      Fade is the movement of the disc from right to left. The more stable a disc, more fade at the end. Usually due to a Hyzer angle throw.
      Finish is essentially how the disc lands at the end of its flight.

    the roadrunner, mamba, fury, aviar, wombat3, mako3, archangel, stingray, cobra, evidence, witness, judge/warden, tursas, fuse, pure/mercy, underworld, crown, and FD would be my main reccomendations in addition to the discraft selection shown. the rest of these for those who may not already know are from the manufacturers: Innova, Discmania, Westside, Dynamic Discs, and Latitude 64. im not too familiar with Prodigy, and MVP/Axiom/Streamline are both harder to find and the most expensive (usually).

      Innova discs are probably easier to find than any other brand, but no brand is inherently better than the others. For Innova, i would specifically recommend Aviar for putter, Skeeter and Shark for midranges, and Leopard for low speed fairway driver. These discs are great for beginners and line up well with the Discraft discs Hunter recommended in the video.

      I agree, it took me quite a while before I figured out what a Hyzer Flip is. It doesn't actually flip over, so another term would be better.
      Even terms in this video like "it's going to finish" meaning turn to the left, or "it's going to turn over" meaning turn to the right (RHBH) are confusing. It *tilts* to the right, but it doesn't really turn over. 😏

    Challenger (CryZtal ) is my all time favorite disc. Starting out, however, I think an Omega SS is a good bet-- Aviar with a much nicer feel. (165-169g)
    Midrange, I'm conflicted. I'm old school enough to recall the answer was always Innova Shark, however, the Discraft Stratus works extremely well for beginners (I've given all mine away to said beginners). I'm also going rogue and nominating Lightning #2 Flyer. For one, it's cheap ($5, most places) . Secondly, for beginners it will be rediculously easy to control and as improves, super easy to turn over. Graduating to a Buzz SS will feel natural. Forehand people will benefit from Innova Spider (if can find one). (150-165g)
    Driver / High speed disk? Avenger SS. All day. No question. In Pro D to start. Move up to ESP FLX as get better. Alternatively, Innova Sidewinder could work well. (also 150-165g... I had an 137g Avenger SS gave to my12 yr old nephew)

    Definitely get a driver as a beginner, especially if you're just playing to have fun. Something lower speed for sure. But playing without drivers would not be fun. This is a game. It's fun.

    • @smtx11
      @smtx11 4 года назад

      How is it fun for a beginner to throw 100ft extreme spike hyzers for every shot? Understand how to throw slower discs (3-6 speed) in various stabilities first, they will go farther than drivers right away anyway. Then get a lightweight fairway driver on the understable side. Once you can flip that, buy the same disc but heavier. Once you can flip that, buy something faster (9-11) in a lightweight plastic. Then bump up in weight until you reach a comfortable throwing weight. Stop throwing faster discs when you plateau, meaning a neutral disc acts the way it should when thrown at full power. This top "speed" is different for everyone, and depending on how much you practice, this process could take months, years, or never really happen at all.
      Sorry but handing a newbie a 175g speed 12+ is fun for no one, especially them. Because they will be seeing you flex out 400ft+ drives, when all they do is go 100ft and dump left straight into the ground over...and over...and over again. I've seen it a hundred times. They get discouraged, and I get tired of encouraging. Hand them a 155g speed 7 (if they kinda know how to throw already) and you know what happens...smiles! Because even though they are only going half as far as me, the shot "looks" the same. They then can understand how discs do what they do and why. The next shot they throw well, I'll hand them the 175g version of the same disc they just bombed (to them) and say do the exact same thing. They do, and get a completely different result. Then things click, and we have a new disc golfer.
      So yeah, if "fun" is what you are looking do not follow the advise above. Unless your friends are masochists, or you yourself are a sadist...then by all means continue.

    • @everettcorder5977
      @everettcorder5977 4 года назад

      smtx I pretty clearly said lower speed drivers. Giving a newbie a 7 speed fairway like a Maverick or a River will give them a little early added distance over a mid-range while still teaching them proper technique. I didn’t say everyone should get a Destroyer with their starter pack. That would be ridiculous.

    • @smtx11
      @smtx11 4 года назад

      @@everettcorder5977 I took those as two separate statements. There was a period in between them, and nothing linking the second one to the previous sentence. So I thought you meant something slower in addition. My bad, but I'm glad we agree though.

    • @brianpaul21
      @brianpaul21 3 года назад +1

      As you progress your throw gets stronger, the more spin and speed you add, that disc that once was flying straight or even finishing to the left (right handed backhand) is now turning over to the right. Now it’s time to move up to the next level of speed that will allow you to take advantage of your new performance.

    I was also wondering if a max weight buzzz is a good disc, I have been wanting a buzzz for awhile and I can only find one and thats on you guys' website but the only weight is 177+ and I want to make sure that is a good weight

    • @dpwellman
      @dpwellman 4 года назад +1

      Depends. As a rule, heavier disks are easier to control / more predictable, but then more stable / over stable and give up some glide. You notice most putters are 170g or more for that reason.
      In my opinion, a Pro D, ESP, or X Line Buzz 166g is a good neutral weight. Z Buzz, take off 2 grams or so.

  • @cedarman211
    @cedarman211 4 года назад

    I really liked it - thank you. I am new and one issue I have is that my putters fly nearly as far as my mid-ranges -- 150 to 200ft. Should they?

    • @philipsaul

      That's completely normal when you're first starting out. Putters are much easier to control than faster discs, so a good rule of thumb is to use the slowest disc that you can throw the distance you need to. Once your form and arm speed gets better, you'll get more benefit from faster discs

    hey great videos keep up the great work. I had a question about factory 2nd discs. I wanted to know if factory 2nd discs are as good as normal discs? I have been trying to get more discs but I don't have a lot of money to buy all the ones i want

      They sure are! They have some type of mistake that makes them not pass inspection to go into circulation, but it doesn’t affect the flight. Normally it is with the stamp or like a speckle in the rim or something small like that

    Love this video.... I wish I would have had this advice when I started. My question for you is, how do you know you've moved from "beginner" to "Intermediate"? What are the signs to start moving up in disc speeds, stability, ect.... When I moved up to a PD, it changed my game and I was able to throw farther accurately....But when I tried a Ricky Destroyer, I cant do a thing with it.

    • @andrewduring7142
      @andrewduring7142 4 года назад +1

      When your arm speed progresses to the point that your PD starts turning over real hard when you throw at 100% power, that’s when you know you have the power to control higher speed discs. If you can throw the PD long and straight but still can’t handle the destroyer, try a Wraith. It’s a speed 11 and about where my arm speed tops out and I love it.

    • @jansingber376
      @jansingber376 4 года назад +1

      @@andrewduring7142 Thanks for that..... I actually bought a Wraith and a Tern and bombed both of them at Blue Lake today. The Tern, being speed 13, actually went much farther than any disc Ive ever thrown. Im recognizing that at this point, I have more power/armspeed when Im throwing flat/hyzer. That Destroyer is so overstable, I can't seem to get it glide very far before it starts hooking to the ground. Getting disks that have some flip is helping tremendously. (Mamba, Katana, Tern)

      Jans Ingber good to hear! I had the same problem and thought it would be a good idea to buy an understable speed 13 Daedalus. At first the understability didn’t even come close to making up for the high speed rating and it would crash out fast. But I kept throwing it in more overstable situations and eventually it beat in enough to where it will fly how I want, with a heavy turn and a slight fade at the end. Moral of the story: don’t give up on that destroyer. Once it gets a little wear to it and your arm speed picks up, it’ll become your go to bomber disc.

    No love for the comet... sad indeed :) Its a great idea to help the beginners since a lot of them see the discs top pros throw and they think that is something they should get. I see way too many brand new players throwing destroyers, pd2 or zeus that have no business throwing them.

      At the release of this video, only the meteor, Heat, and Sol were sold out. I guess people acted fast. If you are a part of our discord, we have a thing called disc bot where you can learn the flight numbers of these discs and use them to attempt to find something similar in the Discraft lineup or from other retailers! Link is in the description if you wanted to join!

    Thanks man this really helped I'm having such a hard time finding a putter I like. I have a jawbreaker roach and I do like the feel and flight but it's a lil to light in some sutuations. I mainly throw innova and like the flight characteristics of my aviar3 but I got the wrong plastic I have grip issues and miss puts I shouldn't be missing and I dont like the depth of the disc either so I'm excited to get another roach and maybe a fierce in a more comfortable weight. Any suggestions on a plastic that will have decent grip but wont get beat up too fast as I like to play and practice daily if weather allows.

    • @johntardibuono625
      @johntardibuono625 4 года назад

      For putting, I think Discrafts Jawbreaker plastic is best for putting putters followed by Pro D. Z Flex, or big Z for upshots, and approaches. Weight should be close to max for putting, for longer outside the circle putts , take off 6- 10 grams, see if it helps. I also had a problem with release, and found out if I put 3 fingers under the rim and my pointer finger on the lead edge, it really helps to make sure the fingers under the rim are really secure, and your thumb is not pressing too hard on the plate.

    • @micah_lee
      @micah_lee 4 года назад +1

      They are basically sponsored by discraft. I’d just suggest sticking with discs you know work and if that is multibrand then that is fine. But if you are trying to find discs and know one brand better than other brands then stick with that brand. Everyone has their preferences with brands.

    • @kimmomatikainen1843
      @kimmomatikainen1843 4 года назад +1

      @@micah_lee I agree that stick with discs that works. It's nice to try new discs, but if something works, don't force to learn something that doesn't work naturally.
      I never recommend staying within one brand unless you are sponsored player. Why making compromises by using one brand when you can get what you want and need without compromises by using multiple brands.
      For a non-sponsored player I don't get the idea of using only one brand, if you want the best discs. I understand it from support or "philosophical" perspective, but not from a practical perspective unless local shops sells only couple of brands.

    • @micah_lee
      @micah_lee 4 года назад +1

      @@kimmomatikainen1843 You have to realize that most brands have a full lineup. I throw mostly prodigy and I can attest even though it isn’t a popular brand it def has a full lineup. Obviously there are some shortcomings so I just throw other discs I know work but the thing is is that I know all of my prodigy discs work really and so I don’t want to have to try another disc to see if it is slightly better. I use a thunderbird i’ve had for two years and a rocx3 for the overstable further flying midrange (compared to a2.) And like a champ firebird because I don’t have a h1. You don’t have to have a mixed bag. Just do whatever works and if you only have a certain brands discs then you don’t have to branch out. I keep buying the same discs I know work.
