I'm not a religious person, but one thing I noticed in the army. The religious soldiers had a way of keeping the faith that God had a plan. They'd take a breath and then they would say, "everythings gonna be alright" and it was. I call them Paladins. Just not to their face.

As a man who used to struggle with depression these are the most helpful things I can think of:
-Take Risks, don't let the fear of failure stop you from trying something new or something great
-Do things that genuinely scare you or that you're afraid of (Even little things like climbing onto a roof and helping to put up Christmas lights if you're afraid of heights or saying something to the cute cashier girl other than "hi" and "thanks")
-Pursue an ambitious goal, one that a lot of people don't believe you can achieve (It doesn't even matter if you fail this because no matter what the pursuit of an ambitious goal will make you a better person and give you fulfillment) With that being said, do your best to succeed
-Have a passion, basically this means to find a hobby that you enjoy so much that you will spend hours and hours getting better at it
-Study history, pick a role model, and then analyze the traits of your role model and list the reasons why you admire them. Then start to emulate these traits in your everyday life and eventually you will become your own role model.
-Don't ever quit something just because it's hard (You can quit a crappy job if it's not the right fit for you, but never quit solely based on the fact that something is difficult). Embrace challenges and look for opportunities to improve yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually.
-Never put yourself down. Try not to think negative things about yourself and especially never say them out loud. You will think more highly of yourself when you say positive things about yourself, at the very least avoid putting yourself down on purpose.
-Live purposefully. Have a direction for your life and if you don't already have one, make one. Decide what's most important to you and live accordingly. If you have a family or even a single loved one, your first priority (other than serving God if you're religious) should be to provide for them, to protect them, and to help them become the best version of themselves
-Develop Integrity. I can't even explain how much this increases your self-repsect. Be honest, be trustworthy, don't cheat (unless you're in a street fight) and live with honor.
-Find a hobby that you're really passionate about and strive to become a master at it
-Finally, probably the most important thing I can say is to think less about yourself. Think less about yourself but not less of yourself. In other words, think about other people before you think about yourself, especially your family and loved ones. If you're focused on helping them with their problems I can promise you that your problems will become less important and less troublesome. Look for opportunities to help others and make them feel better about themselves. Nothing lifts you out of depression better than helping someone out of theirs.
I hope this helps. I realize that some people are genetically predisposed to having a harder time with depression, but I believe that there's nothing you can't overcome with a strong mindset. In addition, I strongly believe that going through depression and having such terrible lows actually gives you the capacity to feel even greater happiness and joy. The reason I say this is because when you feel genuine joy after being depressed for so long you can't help but feel grateful.
The beauty of life is that we are meant to experience the full range of human emotions, from happiness to anger to jealousy to despair to joy. We couldn't feel genuine happiness if we never knew what it was like to be sad. If I could talk to whoever is reading this face-to-face, what I would say to you would be simple: don't quit. A quote from Winston Churchill kept me going in times when I thought I had nothing left, he said: "If you're going through Hell, keep going."
Everything in life can be and is meant to be an opportunity to make yourself better, and depression is no exception. Keep fighting, all of you are descended from warriors no matter what culture or country you are from. You wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the conquering spirit of your ancestors. Live a life that would make them proud. While most of us will not fight in physical wars, no one is exempt from the battlefield of life. Depression can be a battle every single day, every single second in some cases. Keep fighting, it will only get better. And the more you fight, the more you will gain respect for yourself. I've conquered my depression. Every now and then it will start to try and creep back into my mind but I don't let it. I destroy those feelings with action. I go lift weights, I go running, I listen to metal music, whatever it takes for me to regain my confidence.
You can conquer depression, no matter how severe it is. That doesn't mean you'll never have days where you feel down, but it does mean that you'll have the strength to push through and do what you need to do as a man regardless of how you're feeling. Stay strong, stay hard, and fight like dragons 🐉 You're going to be very glad you did.

Wow Dwayne, just wow!! Im a 52 year old carpenter that burns the candle at both ends. I recently had severe back problems that laid me up at home in absolute agony. Ive run the gamete between praying for healing to yelling at God for this aweful experience. Ive found very little comfort in several days but this chat from Dwayne certainly made this day a little better and i def needed to hear this. My daughters have told me this very thing although in dif words haha, i believe God speaks to many about many topics, through many people. Thank you Lord and thank you to my favorite cowboy of common sense for speaking these words today, they were strongly needed! God bless you and yours Dwayne and to anyone who reads this.

This is for you folks who injured your back.
Some background: I’m a personal trainer (32) with background working alongside physical therapists and chiropractors. Now pursuing firefighting full time.
Some years ago I injured my knee and back. Bulging and herniated discs in my lumbar.
What’s helped me, aside from good nutrition, is the following:
      • ATG Coaching (by Ben “kneesovertoes” Patrick)
      • deep tissue massage/myofascial release
      • (Upper Cervical) Blair Technique practiced by certain chiropractors
I would strongly advise seeking these professionals. They’ve helped me tremendously.
Will check back with this comment if you have any questions. Happy to provide other resources and give back.

Keep the faith...I had severe disabling back pain for years and the doctors had no solution other than pain meds. So I did my own research and found a new experimental surgical procedure. Only 2 doctors in my state would perform the surgery and I had to pay cash ($6K) as my insurance would not cover anything experimental. When I awoke from the surgery, the doctor asked me to stand up, and the pain was gone. Miracles DO happen!

Been dealing with back problems all my life doing physical jobs. Tried everything and have found that the primary cause is emotional stress and anxiety. It’s really weird. When you’re all pent up from stress, at least for me, it manifests physically in the hips and lower back. Worrying about money, relationships, the future. It builds up. Doing basic yoga/ full body stretching, and back stretching twice daily when things flare up pretty much fixes it. Till another bout of stress comes along.
Listen to DeWayne. Relax, take care of YOURSELF. Cause you ain’t gonna be no good to nobody if you’re not taking care of yourself. And if other people or circumstances aren’t in line with that? Well…. That’s the problem.

It's really difficult to be "patient" when the stress reaches a level where it prohibits me from being functional. :(

all i can say is try and respect yourself. i lost a parent a few years ago but i remember that i let myself feel the pain when it was an appropriate time (not out in public or in the midst of a task, for me) and reminded myself that my parent would want me to find things that i enjoy or appreciate.
you're not gonna feel happy, not in the same way and probably not for a little while, but i want you to know that'll come back. you learn to integrate the grief into you. it tells you how much you cared about them and serves as a reminder for such. i like to tell myself that we're built to endure grief because we're built to love people.
i'm not sure when the lost feeling goes away. it hasn't really left me but i also think a lot of us feel a bit lost trying to navigate life. hope you can get a little bit of direction; it can be as simple as planning what you'd like to cook or buy to eat for the week

Hey everyone, first of all i want to thank Dwayne for his video, it really struck a chord with me. I've been dealing with a deep-seated fear of talking to people for a while now, a overwhelming anxiety that creeps in every time I have to engage in conversations. In addition to this fear, I took a wrong turn in my early twenties and got involved in crimes, people who didn't deserve it got hurt. It's left me with a heavy heart and a profound sense of guilt. Life in your twenties, fresh out of high school, attending college, can be incredibly confusing, especially when you're lost and unsure of your purpose. I've also suffered significant losses along the way, including some close friends, my girlfriend of six years, and even my beloved grandmother. It feels like life has thrown me into a whirlwind of uncertainty and pain. Today, I'm still on the journey to find some semblance of happiness amidst the struggles. I won't sugarcoat it; I still suffer a lot. I have sleepless nights, barely eat, and find it challenging to enjoy life. But recently, I discovered Dwayne's videos, and they've become a ray of hope for me.
When I head to school, instead of being overwhelmed by stress, I tune in to Dwayne's videos, and they work like a soothing balm. His words resonate with me and make a lot of sense. They provide me with a moment of calm in the storm of my daily life.
I really wanted to share my experience to let others know that even in the darkest of times, there are sources of inspiration and comfort out there. Thanks to Dwayne and his positive messages, I'm finding the strength to keep moving forward, even when it feels like the world is upside down. So i hope everybody and their family are fine, i hope Dwayne here is fine and his family is alright and wish you all the best. God Bless you all.

I used to run a small business by myself, just an online store. I’d hand make everything by myself and while I loved it so much, it was utterly exhausting doing that outside of my full time job. After years of dealing with the workload and some truly awful people I decided to take a break. Here I am two years later and have been hesitant to end my “break”, but after watching this I think I’m going to get back on that horse and get back to doing what I enjoy 😊 Thank you for all your wisdom and positivity!

I just turned 47 last month. I'm out of shape, but I've been trying to get on my bike more. This last Saturday, a brisk pace for 30 minutes ended with me nearly dying(so I thought😂). I got home and lay on the bed, expecting to die right there. After about 20 minutes, I shakily got up and showered. I didn't die! It's Monday and here I am battling depression, anxiety, high BP..... Am I going to quit trying to get better? No, I'm going to put my head down, chuck out the fear of death and push myself into the hurricane.

Some quotes to help you get through 💪🙏:
Friedrich Nietzsche: “To live is to suffer; to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.”
Frederick Douglass: “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
John Milton: “Long is the way and hard, that out of Hell leads up to light.”
Thomas Paine: “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble that can gather strength from distress and grow.”

Thank you sir. I make my living as a paramedic. I tried to be a horseman for a while but, apparently God didn't have that life in store for me. I am also a Volunteer firefighter.
I love helping people but, it takes its toll. I have been in Fire/EMS in some form or another since 1994. I have seen alot of people die in alot of different ways. I have helped alot of people live through some of the worst medical and
Traumatic emergencies of their lives. Strange thing is, I didn't plan on this life. It was never my dream job to become a paramedic yet here I am.
I guess I tell you and those reading this that we all have stress in our work, even what others may view as exceptionally noble or adventurous work. There is a saying, "all that glitters is not gold". The Lord knows that we will have trials in our lives. These trials are part of the fallen world, but they are also the furnace that purifies us.
So, just as God rested on the 7th day after creating the world. We need to rest from our work.
Thank you, Dwayne, for reminding us all of this.
God bless you and yours, sir!

Exactly. Everytime I feel in a funk, Im exhausted. In the past, Id always fight the funk and kept going until I broke. (i wasnt a good father or husband during those times) I never knew I was exhausted (mental and physical and everything inbetween). It took me a couple dacades to get the wisdom to realize I need a rest, and that its not weak to take a rest. Rest is not a boulder in the journey, rest is part of the journey.
    Love the videos.

One thing I have had to grapple with and gain acceptance in is letting go of the guilt of resting. A lot of people who are hardworking will find a dissonance with rest and the seeming need for productivity. Often, I would find myself feeling less rested than the day before, because I would get so stressed about what I “Should be doing” that I could not just relax and enjoy my day of rest.
Since then I have been able to find a healthy balance and this has let me take much more meaningful rest periods that actually leave me feeling good and excited to come back to the journey of life.
    Thanks for this Dwayne

I felt that too. If I didn't have a hobby or passion I would go crazy and drink and eat myself into a stupor. Now I understand resting and doing nothing is good, it helps your brain to re-organize itself.

The last time I had a couple of weeks with family and nothing required of me was 2011, and in some areas, I am exhausted. You are absolutely right about there being different types of exhausted, and how you rest needs to suit the kind of exhaust you're feeling. COVID had me at home all day every day with about 30 min total online at home, and believe me, staying home was no help because the stress was mental and emotional. (several people I was in touch with were very agitated all day every day).
I see the effects that having a good rest produce in other people, and I think a rest would be very welcome and do a lot of good.
Dwayne, you do have that rest. It will help and restore you.
What I will do from time to time is "vegetate". Vegetables usually don't look like they're doing anything, they're just sitting there.. but a week later, you can see they did make some progress in what they needed to do. I just sit there all day, or for 2 days, vegetating, and in time, things will start to get done again. Vegetate. Sit and bing-watch a TV series on the PC. Or find a coffee shop that doesn't mind, and sit there and read a book from cover to cover. Go out and sit in the woods.

Thank you Sir. I’ve been blessed to have been raised by parents who’re quite similar to you and Mrs Dewayne. My father grew up in South America and was a ranch vet. But he never sat down, still doesn’t sit down. Thought me and my brother to never sit down. Until I was diagnosed with breastcancer. The cancer has been treated. Two years later I’m still resting. Catching up. Mentally, physically, spiritually. I learn about who I actually am and what my true purpose is, to what service I’m born. Finally there’s silence. I finally allow myself to rest. And in this silence I teach myself to accept, respect and be at service of the Inner Guidance I receive. So I finally learn to sing and perform professionally, after 25 years I study saxophone again, playing in a concert band already. I’ve auditioned for interesting, purposeful roles in films and tv series and always get the parts to my own surprise. It’s the being part of something greater with the goal of creating moments of value, beauty, connection, inspiration, encouragement, consolidation for people who connect with it.
