    Thank you. You're right. I'm 26 and lonely. I have a good salary, lift weights, dress pretty well. I expected that I was finally ready to date based on the person I thought I had become. I met this girl at the gym, and built some rapport. We had so many things in common. I finally asked for her number and took her on smoothie date. It was going so well at first that I asked if she wanted to hike the next day. She said what a nice time she had and was looking forward to the next date. My expectations were so high. My bliss was so high. I thought it was my turn. Then after the hike, she said that she didn't want to lead me on into thinking we could hang out a lot because she was going to probably leave the area for graduate school and not go to graduate school in the area. I know I must have gone overboard and smothered her due to inexperience because my expectations were so high. I felt dead emptiness and reacted poorly to seeing her at the gym (just ignored her and tried to pretend she wasn't there). I don't think that was kind of me. Sadly, I know that explaining myself to her wouldn't go anywhere, but I could at least be courteous next time. Long story, but I need to drop my expectations just as you're saying.

    I'm just a 23 yo girl but when you talked about approaching life like its a hallmark movie it hited me so hard because i've been living in that expectation for more than 7 years of my life, expecting it to be such a beautiful and soft future, and all i gained from that was disappointment. And its so hard to let it go of that view because i feel like if i leave those expectations, my dreams will not come true... and to accept life as it is right now is such a hard thing to do, because its not good. Living has been a torment. So i get divided by these thoughts :(

    • @josiahthayer2205
      @josiahthayer2205 Год назад +1

      Accepting things as they truly are does not mean that you have to give up on your dreams. I think reducing ones expectations actually softens the blow of reality. I've always told myself, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. It's not irrational or wrong to consider what possibilities the future might hold, but you can't live in the future and the present at the same time. It takes many, many years, perhaps even a lifetime, to accomplish the things you aspire to. There will be years of torment, and there will be years of rejoicing. Life is not supposed to "be" any particular way. We have to play the cards we are dealt, and hope for the best. 23 is very young, you have so much time to figure things out. I hope you are able to find some peace soon.

    • @takeuchi5760
      @takeuchi5760 Год назад +2

      I think he doesn't mean to expect to be disappointed or expect that dreams won't come true, he just means don't presume enough to think you know how it will turn out, as that only causes misery and confusion.
      Be adventurous and not naively (even if sub consciously) expect that life will play out like you think it will. It's difficult to switch things like that, still, nothing changes until we try to change it.
      Have unwavering belief in yourself without a hint of entitlement, very difficult balance to strike but a necessary one.

I know I won't let myself down. I live life on an even keel. I don't get too high or too low. Sounds boring and perhaps is, but I feel better overall as opposed to riding the extreme rollorcoaster of emotions.

      Life is both a playground and a battleground. It both allows us to relax and enjoy it at times, and at other times it also holds us unavoidably and undeniably accountable by the consequences of our actions. Life is too short to either only play or only battle; We must learn how to handle a balance of play and battle within our own lives, so that both sides are as enjoyable and as fulfilling as possible.

      Caveat: I haven't watched the full video yet, so I might miss some crucial information.
      My first response: a playground doesn't mean you can't get hurt. There's risks and difficulties, physically, socially and emotionally. Just because you will encounter situations and people you struggle with doesn't make it a battleground. Life can be difficult as is. For me the battleground metaphor adds this dimension of being actively targetted. I don't see how that's constructive or helpful in any way.
      Maybe a middleground between playground and battlefield can be an obstacle course. It has the element of adversity. Added benefit (for me at least): the immediate awareness there might be obstacles I can't do alone, or on the first try.

    This one hit close to home. I as well had high expectations the way I treated people and selfishly I expected in return. People call me their friend and how good of a friend I am but they're always too busy to go out for lunch or throw a ball around. They say they're always too busy but they're hanging out with the same group of friends without me. It caused depression and made me insecure. Exactly as you said sir I show up to my job to work and not make friends. They aren't paying my bills. Be the best and do the best you can. Be the man and let Noone bring you down by their bs. Everyone take care

    Going through a tough period in the relationship where we’re giving one another time and space.
    Big expectations have been the single biggest factor in my mood during this difficult time.
    I’m learning that curbing my expectations doesn’t have to be a bad thing and it makes things hurt less, right now.

    I wish someone just told me this earlier (though I understand I'm still pretty young), to not sub consciously expect your life to play out like a movie, but be adventurous in your pursuits, instead of expecting things to work out say "Let's see what's around that corner", it's so simple but not doing this has caused me immense pain time and time again. If you have presumptions about a situation your judgement will be clouded and if your lofty expectations are not met you will suffer unnecessarily.

    I will never lower my expectations or my standards. However, I also live in the world of reality. I never expect anything more than what I would expect from myself. If things go south I walk away and most of time don’t look back. When I’m done, I’m done. I give more grace to people than they deserve, but there does come a point that I have no more grace to give. There’s a saying I kinda live by. “If I cut you out of my life, chances are you handed me the scissors” if I have something worth saying I say it. I was raised to be independent but I also am not afraid of asking for help or learning new things. But in this world there are only two people I rely on, and that is myself and God. I have learned if I don’t have confidence in myself no one else will either. Life is hard, it’s a daily struggle. The joy I find is few and far between but I am grateful for it. No one ever said life was gonna be easy, but they never said it was going to be this hard. I appreciate your wisdom and the exceptional ability you have of conveying your philosophies.

    I agree that expectation management can reduce disappointment and take off the pressure, but, on the flipside, you can also set high expectations for yourself and it will give you energy and motivation on a daily basis. The danger is if you don't reach the expectations. But then again, you may reach higher if you expect higher even if you don't achieve 100%.
    This is only for expectations of yourself, not others. Expecting little from others is probably a good bet.

    For awhile now I felt like I needed to come back here and get some wisdom and I'm so happy that today I sat down to watch this one. Man, it's difficult to manage expectations when you are tired.
    So here's my 2 cents to this one: if you are tired, you may develop higher expectations. If you do, prioritize yourself so that you can recover, so that you may save yourself from being disappointed. If you are worried about people not understanding, then trust in your relationships. Because if those people don't understand, then why have them in your life to begin with? We all get to be tired sometimes and that is normal. And I hope that this helps someone out there, who like me, felt like it isn't normal to be tired.

    Young men and women can learn a lot from us wise ol' souls. Thank You
    You just said my Mantra.
    Disappointments are the direct results of expectations.
    I tried to help my son realize that, while he is making plans, so is everyone else around him.
    So make plans and set goals with the idea in mind to be flexible.
    And remember...
    When you come up against a wall... Be the ball.
    In my personal life ,
    I do practice the law of intention, by envisioning a desired result. Then holding that intention in mind as I go about daily life. The trick is not to push., but rather be aware when opportunities that align with my intention are presented. And they always are... *If* we pay attention.
    The same principals apply for manifesting.
    Life will bring you what you need if you are willing to be
    1. Patient
    2. Aware
    3. Greatful

    People in relationships and in business do not nail down the expectations for each party - and the inevitable occurs, since more missions fail. Out of the rubble ... bitterness and fretting. And lawsuits. This really clips people's wings in life. Always build a reserve - in financial life - and in your character. Detach and discern. Take your time before you decide. But ensure you know what you aim to get, and what your collaborators expect to gain - and that all parties state these things. And lastly, life is preparation for problems. There is often no outright solution, only trade-offs.
