In my opinion forgiveness isn't about the past or hope. It's about the future consequences of someone's actions that got waivered because they realised they messed up.

Exactly. In our part. It doesn’t have to. But God forgives forever and completely. He cannot even see your sin at all. He sees the blood of Christ. He sees that imputed righteousness given to us Romans 2 talks about. He sees His son’s righteousness when He looks at a saved soul. It’s a forgiveness we cannot understand or give. Jesus says love your enemies and pray for them. I guess we need to pray for all these politicians lol 😂

Sir I am a Hindu from India. Been your subscriber for I dont know how many years. Every time I watch your video, I realise how common are the principles of morality in Christianity and Hinduism. I really think that the religious people from all over the world should come together without any attempt to impose their faiths on others. Once we embrace our religious differences and unite with what we believe is moral, we can make our society great and just

I have struggled with this forgiveness issue for decades now. I am a 66 yr old Christian who has been wronged by three individuals in my life. Family members tell me I should just forgive them and move on, but I know that none of them acknowledges their wrongdoing. This is the greatest clarification I have heard yet! Thankyou.
I divorced my wife 3 years ago. She was impossible to live with. She got hooked on oxycodone and it radically changed her personality. Last spring she died from a heart attack. Now I feel I should have tried harder to get her help and I should have stayed with her. The load of guilt I carry is heavy and unbearable. I do not sleep thru the night anymore. 2:30am is when the demons come to torture me. I have noone to blame but myself and nowhere to go for forgiveness. I guess that I deserve it.

God says that everyone is forgivable. Are we above God? Who are we to judge that a person is unforgivable when God is clear when he said ALL can be forgiven?
@Nomadestra your argument is did I say that anyone was unforgivable. I said forgiveness is earned by asking for it and confessing that you have done wrong. We take our example from God, as his approach is the same way. You are forgivable and redeemable, but you do not receive that forgiveness or that redemption unless you ask for it.
@DryCreekWranglerSchool If by asking for forgiveness, you mean you have to forgive first and foremost, I agree. God didn't say you get forgiveness merely by asking for it. You have to seek and attain the ability to forgive others before you earn the right to be forgiven. Now, it doesn't mean you have to hunt down everyone who has done you wrong and forgive them. Rather, love and forgiveness are cut from the same cloth, and you have to make both a permanent part of your soul in order to be forgiven by God.
No, when I say “ask for forgiveness” I literally mean “ask for forgiveness“. I myself and my guy that generally says exactly what he means. It means exactly what he says. You are twisting everything around and ignoring what I am saying, and giving everything different meanings. You are putting your own definition into everything and ignoring what is literally being said. There is no way to have a logical, honest discussion like this.
@DryCreekWranglerSchool I'm not twisting words. You and I just have different ideas about what God meant when he was talking about forgiveness. I don't think he meant simply ask, and the scripture pretty much answers that. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. God won't forgive you your sins until you yourself are ready to forgive all who trespassed on you. A lot of Christians don't get this, and go around judging people all day long. You can not simply live with bitterness in your heart, and then ask for forgiveness every night before bed. God sees that fakeness in a person's heart for what it is.
Our senior pastor/bishop explained this to us several years ago and this revelation is liberating. We don’t have to do what God won’t do himself. Thank you for echoing this.

I never thought of biblical forgiveness like that and it honestly makes complete sense
The only way to truly understand it is to go and forgive your mother and father. The only way to learn forgiveness is to forgive those who are closest to us, and therefore who affected us the most. No parent is a perfect parent, so all of our parents did things that directly and indirectly did harm to us. You need to forgive your mother first for turning us away from the father.

This forgiveness issue took me a lot of years to get right. I landed on this….. A wrong is done, be willing to forgive IF asked, what makes the waiting bearable for me is this; God knows, he SEES, he understands every bit of it perfectly and he says “Vengeance is mine”. SO, SINCE MY HEAVEN FATHER has it, I leave it to him. He has this and revenge is in his hands not mine. Now what is up to me is to forgive as I want to be forgiven…. If they repent, forgiven just like you said. The restoration of our relationship is up to me, and I base that on my judgement of their repentance and future actions. Does their walk match the talk? As always sir, I appreciate your great perspective and telling it true!

“Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” From the cross….
I believe there is another context about forgiveness found right here: the victim is in the position of higher power and forgives in order to not punish those who have wronged them.
The Son pleads the Father to forgive the humans, so that they would be saved from Fathers wrath. If the Father forgives them there would be no divine retribution.
I would agree with Dewayne: some people may only receive forgiveness if they repent for what they have done and ask to be forgiven, but some should be forgiven despite not repenting nor asking to be forgiven.
The difficulty is found in making this decision.
The unrepentant will suffer God's wrath. Why? They don't acknowledge Christ and accept His gift of Grace and Mercy. If they do, the Holy Spirit will convict them, and that motivates them to ask forgiveness and then repent, which is to turn away from. God sends no one to hell in my opinion. He honors their request in rejecting Him. That wrath will be far greater than any punishment doled out by man. Now, I understand Dewayne's perspective. However, holding on to unforgiveness keeps one bound to the past. It's a complex thought process for sure. The issue, as I see it, is between the individual and the Lord. This assumes the individual is surrendered to the King and not in defiance or rebellion against the King. We bow our heads in prayer, exposing our neck to the King who has the power and the right to lop it off. But in His great example of Mercy and Grace, He forgives one who is surrendered to Him and accepts His attoning sacrifice of His Son, Yesuha / Jesus. My thoughts and "your mileage may vary" based upon your position to the King.. 9:07

@@TrapperDavido That leaves open the argument so that even if the son allows the case forward, the father may reject. Otherwise, in meaning, the son decides and father forgiveness is a mere formality.

AMEN brother. I have known this since I was youngster. People thought I was autistic or a sociopath when young. It was just clear to me that it was not my obligation to tolerate other kids that didn't have the same values and were not on my level of thinking. It's a good thing to not fallow the crowd. Serves me well as an Adult. Only a few people have earned the right to be my friend. Ilove them with all my heart and would give my life to protect them and they're families!

You are 100% correct. Thank you for explaining this Truth with such great clarity, Dwayne. You have given me the words to explain the dilemma of forgiving someone who is repeatedly decietful or cruel without apology, and who aparently counts on victims to let things go.each time. The only answer is to let it go and walk away, with willingness to forgive if and when forgiveness is asked for. The hardest part is learning to stay out of harm's way!

Amen!!! Thank you for this message. As a child, I endured all kinds of abuse at the hands of my family. For over 50 years, many Christians have told me that I had to forgive them or I would go to hell. Yes, that adds a terrible burden to the victim - so much so that I turned away from God for many years. Recently God gave me the very answer that you outlined in your video - that God forgives those who ask for forgiveness. It's the same for those who wronged us here on earth. No one who abused me ever asked me for forgiveness so God told me it was ok for me to let them go. God bless you for sharing this word.

No way in hell I’d forgive someone who does those dirty actions. If they really want forgiveness then they’ll have to earn it and prove themselves that they want forgiveness. How I see it, forgiveness is earned.

My uncle once told me that my mom said to him he needs to forgive his sisters for what the did to him and he told her that's not my job, that's God's job. I'm the youngest of 8 daughters and three of my sisters have done me very wrong. And I keep those same words in my head. I can't forgive them, only God can. And they've never asked for any forgiveness.
I've been smoking cigars for over 30 years. I have stopped for 4 months. Now, I see Dewayne smoking a cigar. I'm glad he said what he is smoking, the Partagas Red Label. I went and bought a few of those cigars. I haven't tried it yet, but hopefully, I'll get to try it tonight. 😊
Forgiveness gives us back our power. We can become so consumed with hate or pain that it can effect us physically.
I went thru this with my mother in law that pulled some crap that parent's just shouldn't pull on their kid's/grandkids, I couldn't handle hearing her son act like nothing had happened, that I started getting physically sick. I sat down & wrote her a letter saying what I needed to say. After working on it for abt a month, I mailed it. I literally felt all the pain & anger & even hatred leave my body, go down to my hand's as I sealed & addressed it. In the last 26 yrs., she's never apologized to me for the thing's she's said & done to me, my oldest or my husband's oldest. But she's still not a part of our family, we even help her & her brother (mostly him) with food often. Her son (hubby) has followed in her footsteps of stupidity & not taking responsibility, it's always someone else's fault but his. 🤷♂️ but I forgave him (several too many time's) because the stress from it all started effecting my health & he just wasn't worth dying early for.
Forget? 🤔 unfortunately or fortunately, I haven't. But I don't you have to forget in order to forgive, otherwise you'll just keep being put thru something over & over.

Family dynamics are interestingly difficult. I have to say I am working through a similar situation with my daughter inlaw. We are at a loggers head, and an apology would not dissolve the situation. My son is stuck with the burden, which I feel sorry for him.
@@paulsims6888 I sort of did (felt sorry) for my husband. But he didn't even make an effort to side with, not even for a day. Then he blamed me because the kid's didn't have a relationship with her.
Your son is between a rock & hard place, he's got to decide if he's going to allowing her to do whatever that keeps you guy's from having a good relationship with her/them. I don't understand how a grandmother can just sit by while her grandkids grow up & do nothing to be apart of it. 🤷♂️

In my opinion, if he confronts the situation, he will loose her and his kids. I am not sure he has a choice at this point. I hope I am still alive see true joy in his life. They have wronged me greatly and have not been able to recognize their faults and ask for forgiveness.I have not talked to my mother, father, two brothers in over a year. This video hits home. My older brother has always been a very aggressive person, to the point he’s yelled at me and my wife, and said very hurtful things. I’ve always been the peace maker, but have stood my ground. It’s caused great grief in my family, but this video reminds me to stand my ground. He’s never apologized. I can forgive but I’ll never forget.

I have always agreed with you on this. It is much easier to walk away from those who are unwilling to repent. You can not force forgiveness down someone’s throat
You're looking at it wrong. Forgiveness is for you, not for the person you're forgiving. It matters not if they accept it or not. It has to be something you fully accept with all your heart. Until you see it this way, you don't know how to forgive, and God won't forgive you. Let it all go.

@Sandppy Forgiveness is not something you give to somebody else. Those are just words and thoughts that the other person receives. Forgiveness has to come from a specific state of mind that is at peace with the world, themselves, and God. For instance, you can forgive someone who has done you wrong even if they don't accept it or even don't hear you say it. It's something you yourself come to terms with. Not anybody else. You can forgive a dead relative for doing you wrong. They don't have to be alive for you to tell them. You're too hung up on what the Bible says, or where you've heard that info from. God is within. God even says in the Bible not to worship knowledge and thoughts, which is what people are doing when they thump the Bible with scripture quotes. You don't need to read and quote the Bible to have an understanding of everything that is taught in it.
@@Nomadestra look up the definition of forgiveness, it is exactly something that one person gives to an offender. Letting go of something you so for yourself. Definitions matter, because if we cannot agree on the definition of words then we cannot communicate.

@Sandppy Those are just words and thoughts to the person being forgiven verbally. It means nothing if your heart isn't in it. That's what I'm saying. And if your heart isn't full of love and forgiveness for ALL people, you don't truly know how to forgive. The majority of so called Christians lack this logic and judge people til the cows come home. If you have bitterness and resentment in your heart towards anyone at all, you are not yet capable of truly forgiving anybody. If you don't love all, you love nobody.

There are so many verses about forgiveness, but my favorite is probably Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
Forgiveness is made difficult when one regards themselves too highly, whether or not they know it. Forgiveness is made easier when you love Christ and lean on His grace and mercy. I'm speaking from my own experience, from times of unforgiveness and holding grudges. Thanks for the message, brother Dewayne.

I've been devastated for 3 years since being cheated on and going through a divorce with a child.
I've been apologized to a lot in my life, but never has someone asked me to forgive them.
I cried listening to this video. I've been carrying that burden of trying to force myself to forgive and it's only made me angrier and more hateful. I don't have friends that stick around for more than a year, I live across the country from my family.
I'm alone 95% of the time and it feels like no one cares.

I operate on God's time. I realized when my life turned upside down that I have very little control over my own life. The only thing I can do is choose between left or right when I get to the fork in the road.

Dwayne, what a wonderful lesson, thank you! You’re making distinctions between, forgive and pardon and let go. I never thought of it like this. I never thought of it so thoroughly as you have. Those are three completely Albeit related independent different actions / choices.. Going forward, I will concentrate on letting go. Whether the offender approaches me with an apology, or not is out of my control. I don’t have to rely on that person’s for me to let it go. And for me to let it go is what’s in my best interest, for my mental and spiritual health. Both of which affect my physical health. Great lesson, Sir! Please keep them coming.

Dwayne, to me, is 100% right on this. There is a big difference between forgiving someone of their trespasses, and moving past the anger and pain of being wronged.
There are those in my life who have wronged me, whom I have forgiven when a sincere apology was offered. I have been forgiven of wrongs, myself, under the exact same circumstances.
Others, who have done me horrible wrongs, will never apologize, because they are unwilling to acknowledge that any wrong or harm was done. I cannot forgive them.
But I also can't dwell on the anger and hurt caused by that wrongdoing. Doing so only poisons me, and does not affect them at all.
You don't have to forgive, to move on. But, it's best for your well-being to move on, regardless. And if someone sincerely tries to make amends, it is always best to forgive, whether you keep them in your life or not. Either way, do what's healthiest for you.

Every human thinks their burden is the heaviest.
Like being in the center and everything happening around you. But is this really a truth and if so, to what degree ?
Not forgiving is what leads us to not forgetting. And not forgetting is what makes us prepare to not allow the same mistake to happen again.
I personally believe that it is possible to forgive without forgetting, and that is what I strive for. If what happened was bad enough, it would be impossible to forget anyway.
Forgiving us not forgetting, i can still remember what happened but i forgive you for it
@@VelvetAura This is actually how it should be done. You can forgive any one including yourself, doesn't mean you completely let go of the responsibility from the person who it came from. They did something to you or you did something to yourself. Integrity and accountability is paramount. Why hold a grudge? The energy has no where to go until it's forgiven. Stuck energy is being created leading to disease: dis...ease, lack of flow. The body will eventually manifest these held grudges physically in relevant areas related to whatever the grudge was about. Forgive appropriately, carry no future burden with it, let that go to the universe, and archive it in your own memory.

Lots of truth in your words and wisdom, we do pray with words "and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us", Christ died for our sins, it tells us to forgive others because God forgives us, I am not sure if this only always applies to those who ask for repentance... I think many saints/martyrs did forgave their executioners without them asking for it. But Dewayne now you did made me to think about it and I will have to dig more into the Bible and beyond to understand this, thank you.

I just did a youth sermon on that story from Luke 7 this last summer! I remember, because it is 7:11. Haha. I rarely hear anyone speak on this. Without her boy, she (the Widow) would have had nothing, and Jesus gave him back to her. So powerful!
🔥🔥🕊🕊 I blessed them, I forgave "the unforgivable" only one sent a sort of apology that resembled baiting & manipulation. I was cordial and said thank you, but didn't jump back on the hook... THEN came the vitriol spewed out over me, I fear God, I really did no wrong but to walk away.

Duane, I appreciate you weighing in on this. As ive gotten older & wiser ive come to realize for myself, that forgiveness is something that i must do for myself. You mentioned for us not to allow bitterness to eat us up over the situation. I have a tendency to do that. And for my own healing and sanity i choose to forgive those that dont even ask for it. Not for their sake, nor to diminish the righteous that DO ask for it but, for my sake. See, i watched my mother suffer because she did not let what my abusive father did to her go nor did she forgive those men in the church that allowed him to get away with it. I believe that, besides the cancer, ate her up. She said to me, " ill never forgive you if you do what i did to myself. " I believe she meant that i should forgive and let things go. I understand your point about what God would do. Ive found ive been able to " conquer my enemies " by extending my forgiveness even When they've not asked. Its a very healing and powerful thing to do so. Im not saying everyone should. Each man should do what is in his heart. As for me, ive found this works for me. Again, thank you for weighing in on this subject. I always enjoy hearing you speak.

Dewayne, I love the words. My problem today is the burden I carry is because its my mom and all the past bad stuff that had happened and she is super angry towards me for little past things I might have said to her. She never asks for forgiveness and she never gives me the chance to ask for forgiveness for anything I might have done.

"What credit is it to you if you love those that love you?" I personally believe there are many times when mercy and grace are the answer regardless of if the other person asks for forgiveness. I believe Christ expects us to do so.

They didn’t know they were crucifying the Son of Man. They didn’t put him to death knowingly. It was ignorance. If they KNEW he was the Son of God and did it anyways, that would be unforgivable… it’s like accidentally eating meat during Lent. You didn’t do it on purpose and it was a mistake. God forgives genuine mistakes that aren’t deliberately sinful.

It’s scary how many people are agreeing that forgiveness is not required of us.
We can't take one verse and run with it. We need to see forgiveness throughout the whole scriptures to understand what it means and how to do it. The verse quoted above doesn't dismiss what Dwayne said. It adds more richness to his points.

@@azimuth4850 We receive forgiveness from the Lord by forgiving others, regardless if they admit to them or not. Jesus didn’t ask those that were casting lots on his clothing to ask for forgiveness, he simply forgave them. Nothing needed of them. We don’t have to condone that act, but we can forgive the individual. They might deny God in themselves or others, but we don’t have to deny God in them, because they didn’t verbally tell us they are sorry. Maybe they spoke to God directly, are we to judge and condemn because they didn’t say it to our face?We don’t know, thus we forgive to be free, to let go of the burden on our heart. That doesn’t mean we don’t have boundaries, or allow others to continue to disrespect us. We just don’t keep secret judgments and resentments inside us. Love, blessings, and peace be with you.

So here is my take on this. I actually agree with you on several points you bring up. Me being a Catholic, this is how i understand forgiveness. There are two parts to the forgiveness process. There is forgivness which we are called to do, because forgiveness is a letting go of a debt owed to you. Which is what Jesus did for us. That is why we must forgive if we want to be forgiven ourselves by God. We cannot hold on to debt and at the same time expect God to forgive us. Now for the second part to forgivness, that is reconciliation and that is what i believe you are referring to. And i absolutely agree with you. You are not required to reconcile just because you forgive someone. But we must forgive, because we have been forgiven. We must let go of any debt we believe is owed to us, because Jesus took our debt upon himself when he died on the cross for all man kind. But...
Reconciliation is only required when the person that offended you is softened, humbled and willing to start anew. But the forgivness that is required is between you and
God, That is between you and him. Reconciliation is between you and the one that committed the offense. And i agree with you a thousand percent, the person should come to you with a changed heart for reconciliation to be possible.
Anyway thats my take. I very much appreciate your thoughts on this. You gave me some very interesting new ways to look at the scriptures. And i haved learned from your interpretation of the scriptures. Thank you, " lets come and reason together"
I have been struggling so much with not letting the seed of bitterness be planted in my spirit lately. I needed this message today so much and I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks to you and to your wife for these videos! I know they bless people even if those people don't say anything to acknowledge it.
That reflection on forgiveness is so important, I see this common mistake of people giving bad advice like: "you should just forgive that person" before the other person even acknowledged their wrong doings.
I notice that people who try to forgive someone who has no regret will often end up with resentment and bitterness about the situation. When someone ASKS for forgiveness and you forgive them (like you should), that's when you feel REAL peace of mind and move on. If the person never asks for forgiveness, don't put that weight on yourself.

I think you’re right about confession as the requirement for forgiveness. But we are also called to love our enemies and not judge, remembering our own flaws, so there’s a lot of confusion out there regarding these concepts. Thank you for sharing your insights. ✌🏽
We are called to not judge their intentions or souls. We MUST judge their actions. It’s a spiritual act of mercy. Jesus judged actions!
