Thanks for explaining the right hand picking pattern which a lot of other videos on repeating licks don't explain and I think it's half of what it takes to learn them.
Seth Velsey Absolutely, in my experience that's where a lot of people go wrong when trying to play fast, so I thought it was worth going into detail on the picking technique.
I've heard you play enuf that I'd say are truly an guitar player. I hope you continue to make new lessons. I'm not so good that I can pick it but I truly enjoy the lessons and your inspiring. so God bless ya and keep ya happy and safe.
I’ve been playing these licks for ages and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t play faster. You’re so right about the right hand technique. Thanks for the great explanation!
You're the Man Adrian! Love your very British "manners" , your intelligence, kindness, humility (himbleness), and science like mind...love your Tele and country stuff the most but I'm biased.... thanks for everything yu do. I still would love to meet you in person here in California!
Hands down the best and most enjoyable instructional videos I've seen on youtube. Thanks for taking the time to put these up, I really appreciate it. While it's a great idea to use your little finger to the same extent you would any other fretting finger, it's also fine to choose not to use it in given context - not a cop out, crutch, or constraint in any way shape or form. To imply that it's improper technique in the context of these particular licks - well, I think that's a stretch.
Your videos are very accurate and easy to follow. They've helped out tremendously. You got a great ear. Thanks and greetings from Connecticut. Keep em comin'.
iv been practicing the pentatonic scale and it's different shapes and key postions for a awhile and this is exactly what I have been looking for to goto the next lvl.. just learning the first lick opened my eyes to all kinds of stuff along the fretboard.. thanx brother.. I'm anxious to get into some of your other videos.. cheers..!!
Even though I also believe he is a wonderful teacher you have to respect everyone's opinion. It does not matter who you are or how good you are at anything. There will always be someone there to put you down for reasons of their own. But people like this has only encouraged me to work harder. Tell me i such at something I love to do. I'm going to work my ass off to improve even more. So with respect to your comment. Who is the one that really gets the thumbs down. We know who we are .
Great video! You HAVE to keep making videos like this...easy fast rock licks are the best, there is no need to the fancy staffs to impress. PS: English is not my mother toungue.
That's interesting, you're using a hammer-on to and a pull-off to play all the notes on the B string. It'll definitely get less sloppy if you practise slowly and bump up the speed gradually. Maybe find music you can slip the lick shape into so you don't get bored practicing it over and over again.
regarding the pinkie, yes it's there to be used, proper technique by the classical teachers would punctuate this but they are training for consistent precision, fluidity, and speed. Another commenter mentioned Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Nothing to diss these creative players as well as Gilmore (one of my favourite guitar players) and many blues players, but finesse and speed in the genre of Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Phil Keaggy and the jazz guitarists is not what these talented players are about. S.R.V. was considered a great blues player by many but three fingers stretching four frets requiring a lateral movement of the hand obviously requires more time to reach the destination than a finger which is already millimetres away from its destination. If blues and classic rock is all you want to play, then go to town with three fingers. If you want to shred and/or elicit fast passages and do so consistently with finesse and precision then take the time to develop proper technique. Watch and listen to the speed passages of Gilbert, Vai, Gambale, and the jazz players. They don't require thick gobs of distortion while playing fast in order to smoothen out and conceal timing and other errors. Enjoy the journey. J
Yep, well put - agree with most of that. No right or wrong here as long as it works and sounds good. I'd certainly get my pinkie involved for more complex licks, particularly where stretches are involved.
😯 You're very easy to follow natural teaching skills so I subscribed but aint got no silver so I'll just pick your fine mind for free with all due respect you're an interesting little fella.Gracie e Ciao😯?
Does anyone else have trouble muting g when releasing fast bends? I can hear it subtly in the background and I'm about to Pete Townsend my guitar!! The lesson is brilliant tho, thanks for sharing
Yes, and occasionally I get a little rattle from the D-string after the g-string bend. I find that using my palm to help mute the g and d string, and using my playing hand index finger to help mute the g string silences this pretty well.
@@stevehamilton3526 I have that EXACT problem with luck 3 and have been trying to fix it for a long time now for the SCOM solo. I've tried keeping the left index finger higher to mute the g bends when they come down. Tried muting with my right palm and right fingers curled under. Still not super clean like I'd like. Open to any and all suggestions.
How do you like that Vox guitar? They've never really caught on here in the States, but I currently have their mini-guitars and like it a lot. Another member of my old band had one of their hollow bodies. That too was very nice, unfortunately he traded it for one of the awful CBS takeover of Fender Strats which was real step down in my book!
when I try the first lick and stroke the 2nd string on 15th fret and pull it up again to move the finger on the 1st string 15th fret the string is moving and I do a pull of by mistake when playing it fast, shall I put my first finger on both 1st and 2nd 12th fret, it will still do the pull of tho :/
Hey, I really enjoyed this, but how essential is the picking technique? I’ve been playing for about 3/4 years and it just feels natural & more speedy to pick differently to the way you are
Nah you’re right. Whatever this highly experienced guitar player recommends, you’re better off continuing the habits you’ve picked up at the start of your playing career 😉
@@C414AC back here 5 years later and an experienced guitar player and I can confirm you don't need to always follow someone else's picking.. I now use a mix of economy, alternate and hybrid.. So you were wrong with your sarcastic comment :)
I guess you meant 'Branham', some weird Christian nutter, died in the 60s ...what in the world made you think you should mention him on a guitar lesson video?
Picking is a personal thing and I'm not saying must do it like this. It's 'inside' vs 'outside' picking when moving between strings. In my experience the majority of players find 'outside' picking easier, and that's why I recommend it.

Agreed. Much too often the strumming hand is forgotten in lessons. Thanks!
I just recently found your videos. They are really good. You're an excellent teacher.

Who are the idiots who thumb down these videos? You're a great teacher Adrian. My guitar performance has certainly gone up.
The picking techniques are oft overlooked on these basic riffs. Nicely integrated!

Very good lesson. Challenging without being overwhelming.
Great stuff! Please post more of these.
Thanks, glad you liked the lesson. Yes, more rock and blues licks coming soon.

the best thing is, that you're explaning the what the picking hand has to do:
Go on like this ;)

Thanks Adrian, it helped me a lot !
Nice licks!
Cool licks!
I play Lick No.2 using upward economy/economy picking. Basically up(E)/up(D)/pull-off(B)/up(A) and then repeat indefinitely at high speed.
That's interesting, you're using a hammer-on to and a pull-off to play all the notes on the B string.
It'll definitely get less sloppy if you practise slowly and bump up the speed gradually. Maybe find music you can slip the lick shape into so you don't get bored practicing it over and over again.
Great lesson i would like to hear you play going home by alvin lee thats super fast ive been trying that one.
Thanks Adrian this has really helped,,thankyou so much
Great lesson - is that a Vox Virage Hollowbody? Sounds great.
thank you very much ,taking the time to do this, really helped me a lot ;)

Second lick: 4:23
Third lick: 6:22
Thanks Adrian like your meathard of teaching easy to follow keep um coming 👍
his whut?
Thanks again Adrian!!
thanks man
Is there a logic for pick direction? I see you play down-down on the 1st lick as opposed to down-up, which is possible too.
please, let's make one more video lesson about fast licks
love it

I'm sure you've heard this before, but what model box is that I've never seen it and really like the tone
Great vids!
The guitar is a Vox ssc55. .Its no longer made .Great guitars that never really sold well. I have ssc33 and it great.
Is there anything wrong with doing all downpicks on the first lick? That way there's no string-dodging required
really to understand this chap... Good teacher...

I can't play it :( can you help me. I think I didn't get the right hand picking or how I have to play it simultaneously (sorry for my bad english)
ha dude thats a rad bass in the backround lol
I just wish I could make out what guitar that is.
Maybe a bit late, but ...it's a VOX, the model is called SC55, I think, or something like this, someone else wrote it around here.
Is that the same lick as free bird.

trying this on an acoustic guitar is a nightmare haha
Which one do Bill and Ted use?
Are you the brother of Brian Cox..you know, the science professor?
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
what bpm are you playing @?
Adrian, love your videos.
Can you please just first play the riffs/licks in real time before going into the details.
you kind of look like Skippy from edbassmaster is character ;0)
Not quite sure who that is, but I'm sure it's a massive complement to my good looks...
anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk haha please check out ed bass master "skippy" btw your a great guitar player ;0)
I can say the string is "sticky" to my finger, even when I play it really slow

Hahaha that's the solo from Sweet Child O' mine.
Jesus Christ, dude this is just the sweet child o mine solo.

starting with an upstroke makes it way more difficult + unnatural. i fail to see why you teach this
