After 20 years of playing I feel like sweep picking is finally a possibility I can see on the horizon - do you have advice for a reasonable competent player who just can't get his head, or fingers, round sweep picking? Great videos, by the way. I really enjoy your channel!
go slow, mute the previous string with the next finger to keep them crisp and not lose the whole effect in muddiness. starting on A (5th) string: 7h10/9/9/8/7/10p7 --and continue back down. you can add in a second pull off or even a tap to extend it if you want. even though you're going slow, don't pick them normally, allow the pick to fall through the string into the next string. palm mute as desired, but also because it's easier for your right hand on those first couple strings. typically the first few notes palm muted sound good. I found this particular arpeggio helpful for learning them. edit: the two 9s are done by rolling your index finger slightly. this is the hardest part but is a useful thing to master

I was going to practice "Stormy Mondays" and "The Thrill is Gone", 45 minutes later I'm still playing around with these. Seriously, I appreciate the way you explain the note choices (this is the flat third, this is the ninth, etc) it really helps me understand why those notes sound like they do, why you chose them, and how to change them if I want to move the lick from major to minor or vice versa. My theory knowledge is burgeoning, but this lesson helped me identify where those notes are in the lick itself instead of just in the scale. It made it click.
In the age of 67 yo, I just got an extra layer in my playing style, I can use right away. Thank you so much for your choice teaching students - over choosing using your obvious skills playing in yet a classy Ducth band known Worldwide. Over the years of my musical journey so far I have realized that learning songs with interesting licks works better than learning standalone licks. It helps to internalize the licks better and integrate those within my improvisational playing. I used to learn standalone licks like these before and forget them soon without applying or internalizing much. Songs also help more since you learn the chords and your ears get familiar with the application of various licks with the chord changes. Learning songs or a complete piece of music is a lot better option than learning secluded things. Not sure how many think so, but that's how it is at least for me!
You may be right, or wrong. I feel like everyone sees it differently. But doesn't really matter as long as you get there in your head. Guitar is hard. Lol
The idea is to have fun in the process of learning. There's no end to technicalities or theories more so with fancy overwhelming videos floating around making it look hard or harder than it actually is supposed to be!

I got most of these I'm gonna learn all of these....Couple guys on youtube who have good videos...I watch these because it's more then learned guitar....And if I'm gonna pick up phrasing habits I want it to be from someone in tune with the music. That's important.... Like rule one of guitar you should be able to feel what you play. You get one part down that should bring you excitement.... Guitar is like medicine for me.
Paul, these are excellent licks. They belie what is really going on here. You've created and alluded to a very major-minor sound that is unique to the blues style. Additionally, these licks work best when transitioning between chords. I've found in my studies that the I likes to be Major and the IV and V are minor in the blues. That epiphany changed how I approach lick development; some licks are the I, some are the IV/V, and some help transition the ear between the sounds. Your licks develop such a strong tonic pull that I found myself yearning for the resolution! Again, awesome job at helping people hear what makes the blues unique!
I love this style of video Paul does it just cuts all the technical crap out and just does the actual lick itself for some I guess the technical crap comes in handy but for me I just want a new lick to play
That C/G back to G at the end of Lick #2 is what can be heard in Southern Baptist churches in the "A-men" at the end of singing a hymn. So you've got the Bluegrass thang leading straight into church. Keep it up and we'll make you an honorary North Carolinian.
I tried fruitlessly to play lick 5 the way you described it. Then I slowed down the track and see you aren't pulling off 5-3 on the B, G, and D string. You're pulling off 5-3 B, hitting 3 on G, and pulling off and hammering 5-3-5 on D. Now it makes sense.
Awesome vid! If you made a vid on your process of internalizing licks, and incorporating them into your improv vocab, I would watch that SO hard. For instance, I’ve learned entire songs note for note with fantastic licks BUT the ones I want to emerge in my improv playing kind of get lost in the minor pentatonic norm. How do you fully learn a lick, and when do you move on to learning the next?

Blues is way more fun to play than plain metal shredding! And the sounds you get out your amp are so much more satisfying than the overly distorted stuff.
Metal guitar stuff just doesn't have any real feeling to me, but that's just me. Its cool,sure...but it's nothing emotional or organic about it, I hope that made sense. But much respect to ya though, like I said, it is cool though, just not really my thing haha
@@fredriksvard2603 ....I just can't stand the "jigga, jigga, jigga, ect.. over an over again of the rhythm guitar..I find that part to have no real emotion to it, other than maybe anger, lol The shredding part can be made good if the player is unique with it and not just running through scale shapes at the speed of light. It takes at of practice to do that and I can definitely appreciate that aspect, but its not natural like say, the blues...if done uniquely that is.✌ I dont wanna argue, im a peaceful guy, I respect what you like, my friend

Metal guitar stuff just doesn't have any real feeling to me, but that's just me. Its cool,sure...but it's nothing emotional or organic about it, I hope that made sense. But much respect to ya though, like I said, it is cool though, just not really my thing haha
@@fredriksvard2603 ....I just can't stand the "jigga, jigga, jigga, ect.. over an over again of the rhythm guitar..I find that part to have no real emotion to it, other than maybe anger, lol
The shredding part can be made good if the player is unique with it and not just running through scale shapes at the speed of light. It takes at of practice to do that and I can definitely appreciate that aspect, but its not natural like say, the blues...if done uniquely that is.✌
