Mastering San Diego's Bluefin Tuna: Non-Stop Slow Pitch Jigging Action and BloodyDecks

  • We traveled 2,600 miles for one reason: to try our hand at slow pitch jigging for monster bluefin tuna on the Polaris Supreme in San Diego, California. Reports were grim leading up to the trip. It seemed like the tuna season just hadn’t kicked off, and our timing might have been all wrong. Bluefin tuna are migratory fish, and for the past seven years, they have been showing up off the shore of Mexico and Southern California around April.
We steamed down to Mexico and dropped jigs on the heads of bluefin tuna all day with no luck. Captain Aliyar said he was chasing a school all day and that the fish were there but just not biting. Then night fell, and we had one of the most epic slow pitch jigging experiences of our lives. The JJ team was whacking and stacking triple-digit bluefin both nights of the trip, totaling 106 bluefin for all anglers.
In this video, we talk about all the gear used and how to catch bluefin tuna on slow pitch jigs. We share our travel experience and what we wish we would have done better.

I've seen 200 lbs bft rip drag on a penn 50 wide for 3 minutes straight. 50+lbs drag just getting smoked. Buckle up with a slow pitch narrow if you get one of those and pray you don't get spooled! 🤣🤣 Fine for rockfish, schooly bft and yellowtail, but not the cows. These fish are exothermic meaning the only way for them to cool off is water over their gills so they haul ass to cool off. If you fight a bft to fatigue, their blood cooks the meat and makes it gross. They hemorrhage out and blood all in the meat. Best to overgear and winch them in if they're in a spicy mood.

Around 12:50 when your talking about the stamina to catch the fish. It’s called a rail rod for a reason. That rod should be firmly placed on that boat rail, so you can focus on keeping tension on the tip. That’s what gets the head of the fish turned or else they will spool ya. I rarely ever put that rod up on my hip. The rods just aren’t designed to work that way. Most of the rods have lots of back bone and shut off quick so you will feel every pound of that fish in your back. But if you slap it on the rail your can keep it under your armpit and use that leverage to pump the fish in, or just the normal motion of the boat assuming it’s not glass will give your the leverage to pump.

chumming sardines helps the tuna come to the boat as well as get them to change their appetite from what they were originally eating switching to your chum. this helps private boats get bit on these plunker bites when fish aren’t foaming yet

Chumming sardines is an effective tool to get the fish interested. Once interested, there should be a bite or two to help bring the school up to or around the boat. Keeping the chum going keeps the fish around (by providing an alternative to "wild" bait). Doesn't work every time, but often enough to do it consistently. It's the technique the SoCal fleet has used for years and works better on yellowfin tuna and albacore (for those who can remember when they were around in SoCal), and yellowtail.

    • @CHDoyle3
      @CHDoyle3 Месяц назад +1

Dude, thanks for that input! That makes sense with the yellowfin and it makes sense to practice chumming live sardines on the bluefin. Those crews are quick to react to the capts directions and execute well

I knew Captain Alliard when he was a young deckhand out of Dana wharf. He saved my bass rod and reel! My hands were so numb from catching countless bass toward the end of the day. The rod flew out of my hands as I casted, the braid just caught deep in the spool.
Alliard flew off the bait tank with a gaff like the Flash. He gaffed my rod several feet below the surface!
It was an experience that I will never forget. He will always have my respect and gratitude.
Alliard makes magical Sh*t happen! Proof is in this video! Amazing catches guys!

Wow!! What an experience. Alliard is a great guy and a great captain. This was a trip of a lifetime time. Watching the Captain get down and bloody was honestly refreshing. This man does not steer away from the big fish 🐟 when we would lose the bigger tuna schools we’d find the smaller ones and then boom right back in the big boys. The night bite was unreal to say the least.
Ya know.. now that you mention it I heard a story about a rod being gaffed.
Happy to put a face to the story.
Thanks for watching and Jig On!!

In CA it's illegal to sell sport caught fish. Need a commercial license. Most boat owners/crews do not get involved with the distribution of the catch once it has been divvied up on the pier and each angler has taken possession of his catch. CA Fish and Game is pretty attentive to all this to ensure as few bad actors as possible.

As someone that fished commercially, I cringe when I see people gaff like shit and dont kill and bleed fish properly. When you're killing a tuna, respect the fish and excercise proper gaffing technique and kill & bleed the fish properly. Do some research, Im sure youtube is loaded full of Ike Jime vids, and for gaffing. Gaff the fucking head ffs. Also dont slam the fish in the deck and bruise the meat, I understand this is not a commercial boat and you dont have landing matresses but atleast try to glide the fish on to the deck.
