    It seems backwards that if you order the Dark Essentials package, but GM has the dealerships remove the chrome lettering. Just put the black on at the factory and do it once...

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 года назад +2

      I'm thinking they just do them all as one way and then have us change them for convenience? I really don't know. It's probably easier on the assembly line but they pay us to do this letter Ain't So they end up paying twice when it comes down to it. Somebody got paid to put those first badges on a few weeks ago then they pay us a few hours to replace them.
      I can tell you that they do change the things we have to dealer install over the years. Sometimes it was the Z71 or 4x4 stickers on the end of the bed. Other times it was different emblems or badging. But over time they usually end up switching back over to doing these different packages at the factory.
      The other accessories I can understand cuz they probably don't want stuff getting damaged during shipping. Running boards, tonneau covers stuff like that. Even the nice Wheels they ship separately and just put some steel wheels for transportation on. Would have liked to get a set of those transport tires, but unfortunately the deposit is just as much as the tire for that very reason LOL..

      @richdiscoveries  2 года назад

      That's cool, good luck.
      I've done it a bunch of times, but the first few times I did it, especially the first I was nervous.
      It honestly was not that bad at all. Just put some body tape exactly where you want to put the new letters, Be easy prying the old letters off because they can make a little dimples in the paint. Not bad at all and hardly noticeable, but it can happen when the plastic is pryed up against it.
      And then just take your time when eyeing the strip of new letters while placing it down..
      It really was a lot easier to do than I thought, you will be fine, just take your time..
      Also I will add that if somehow you do end up with little dimples from the corners of the letters, you can always move the lettering a fraction of an inch one way or another to cover it perfectly. As long as you only go a couple of centimeters it's not noticeable at all.

      This particular kit comes with everything in one. Although I have seen numbers and lettering sold separately on Amazon. I've never used the Amazon letters, but from the pictures the quality looks to be about the same and it's cheaper then the dealership lettering.
      It's nice because everything comes pre-measured and spaced in the styrofoam so you just place it in the exact spot and everything is spaced in measured perfectly for you.

    Changing out all my Silverado badges and I'm researching removal techniques. You are the only person I see that can/does it so easily. All others use heat, floss, Goo Gone and a TON of elbow grease. What are you doing different from everyone else in the world? I tried your method and failed miserably and reverted back to the rest of the world technique. Any advice? Lower heat?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  4 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply. I have found that if I use less heat it seems to come off easier, when use too much heat it tends to leave more adhesive behind. Plus with more heat the letters don't stay solid when you pop them off, they start to melt and bend as your prying them off.
      Also the fact that these are new trucks helps a lot, once they have been on there a few years they are harder to get all the adhesive off in one shot

    Another video I looked at the guy sprayed a mist of soapy water and then applied the letter inserts. Which method works best?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  4 года назад

      With letters I'm not sure. I have used soapy water to apply decals and it worked great, just never tried it with the letters. The soapy water allows you to move it around a little before it sets permanently, but I found if you just tape around the old ones it's pretty easy to get the new ones on exact.
      But decals plenty of surface area for the adhesive to stick once the water dries, just not sure how it would work long term with letters.
      it would probably be fine, but like I said I've just never tried it with lettering

      These were dealership from Chevrolet. But I have seen them on Amazon much cheaper and they look to be the same. Anywhere from 20 to $60 for different kits. I can't verify the quality as I have not ordered these off of Amazon, but the measurements are all the same.
      I saw a few on eBay as well, but personally I have not had good luck with eBay in recent years. Amazon has a great return policy if anything is not exactly what you want.
      They have all the different types as well. The straight black, the black with a slight red backing and the black with a chrome backing.
      Again I have never ordered those from Amazon so I can't verify them, but it's worth taking a look

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 года назад +1

      Yes, the Z71 emblems on the fenders and I believe there's one on the tailgate, are the same.
      The only difference is, with the longer plastic portions for the longer letters tend to break when heated. No big deal, you just pull it off in sections rather than one whole piece. Just watch when you're prying any of the letters off, whether it's a whole or piece by piece to make sure that the opposite Edge is not digging into the paint. If it does a little bit it's not a big deal because the new lettering will cover it, but obviously anything deep would scar around the lettering.
      Just do it slowly, play with it with some plastic tools. Once you start you'll get a feel for it and should be fine

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 года назад

      I will check tomorrow and see if GM offers the white lettering, I know I've seen them but I just don't know if it's something they offer.
      But I would say check amazon, they've got everything. I've never used Amazon lettering so I can't vouch for the quality, but if it's not good I think Amazon takes pretty much anything back on returns if you're not happy? Plus it will be half the price than anything you'll get out of the GM catalog.
      But like I said, I have seen plenty of trucks come into the shop with the white lettering with the black background or just full White lettering. It looks really good on the white paint
      I will check it out tomorrow and get back to you if I find anything.

    Can I get a video of putting the illuminated emblem ?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  2 года назад

      I'm sorry I just saw this comment. I still do them periodically, I can put a video together. I won't film the entire process because it gets kind of boring but I can film all the main stuff. I'll do a brief portion of what it takes to get the bumper off, and I'll focus more on where and how big I drill, where I run the wires and how I connect it. Although I do this all day I can tell you it is a pretty straightforward job. Just nuts and bolts and the wiring harness doesn't involve any cutting or splicing. You just unplug the headlight, connect or Jumper in between the two that has a wire coming off of it and then you just Tire wrap it behind sections where you will not be able to see the wire running behind the grill.
      But honestly I think the most involving part is just getting the bumper and Grill assembly off the truck. It's easy it's just a ton of screws. The drilling and wiring I feel as much easier. You've only got to drill one hole right through the center behind the bow tie. It's even got a circle on the back of the grill with a little point dead center so you know you're exactly centered, there's no measuring involved.

      Maybe LOL. Just not sure if it would soften up the adhesive enough.
      Honestly I would just recommend a cheap Harbor Freight heat gun. You could probably have it shipped without even having to go there for around $20. It probably won't be the best piece of equipment you ever buy, but for something you won't need all that much it will be just fine.
