  • The new Land Rover Discovery is an amazing car. But is it the best off-roader, er, off-road? Subscribe now: smarturl.it/autocar
    We've come to an abandoned quarry and brought five 4x4 rivals to take on the new Land Rover.
    They're the original off-roader, the Jeep Wrangler. Is the original still the best? They're joined by a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, an Isuzu D-Max with Arctic Truck accessories, a Toyota Land Cruiser, and our wildcard, the Dacia Duster.
    All of these cars is on tyres offered as original equipment by their manufacturer, but to try and negate differences highlighted by tyres alone, we've picked a series of tests on a dry day that should challenge the hardware of the car itself, not the tyres its wearing.
    Join @matty_prior and the Autocar team as we try to decide: which is the best 4x4.

      @Professor Liberal Avenger you could say put the same shocks, same brakes, same everything. they are different vehicles and the manufacturer sells them with certain equipment. of course they are all different vehicles, so trying to make them the same vehicle in any way is going against what the manufacturer had in mind. if its a stock vehicle test then you have to keep it stock

    • @healthyamerican

      @Professor Liberal Avenger who is going to pay for all those tires? The youtube channel requests all these vehicles on loan. For the price of the Dacia Duster you can add a lift kit and suspension with some AT tyres it would be able to keep up with most of the cars without effort. Dacia's selling point is the price, its a fully fledged 4x4 that can keep up stock but with about £2k into it, it can perform aswell as the rest.

    • @BritishCommentWriter
      @BritishCommentWriter 7 лет назад +9

      The Duster doesn't have a split-differential and it doesn't have low range gears. It isn't a proper off-roader. The course simply wasn't a proper off-roader.

    • @broli85
      @broli85 5 лет назад +2

      im sorry but the lack of a low range gearbox makes it quite useless offroad, no matter how high up you get it . its only advantage is it is so cheap to repair (i guess) that you would not mind going a bit fast and damaging something in the process

  • @michaelkaliski7651
    @michaelkaliski7651 7 лет назад +329

    The Dacia Duster is less than half of the price of the next cheapest contender, the Dacia wins hands down. They backed off the rock crawl, when it probably could have completed the course with some minor scratches. They couldn't bog the Dacia in the mud and they refused to let the Dacia go around the final course, because although it would have been the slowest, it would probably still have got around. For a car that costs so little to be able to compete with the big purpose built off roaders is quite simply incredible.

      Carolicious Channel given they are about to replace the Jimny, and probably wreck it, there may be an opening for a pimped up Duster.
      I think the Duster is one of the best value cars out there. In my younger days I worked on sites and had a 91 escort van. An old work beater that was that simple it just worked, year on year. It was cheap, and hard waring inside. The Duster for me fits the same type of mold. If I wanted a work car, or lived somewhere that needed a bit of off roadimg in the winter, this is the work /family car I'd have.
      A good capable car that isn't that expensive I'd not be scared of scratching.
      An honest car, not many about today. Everyone is chasing the lower luxury end. Ie an unhonest car.

      I have a disco series 2 on 33s lifted with no sway bars and lots of flex and I live in Tucson Arizona with tons of rock crawler Trails and it does okay but a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon still does better because it has more flex and front and rear lockers and the wheelbase is a little bit wider. It's just sad that Land Rover went the direction they did thinking they were doing better it makes no sense it literally has no excuse. You should see how good a Jeep does in the hands of a skilled Jeep owner Factory or modified. The Jeep will climb those rocks at a 40° incline going through a huge ditch while it's raining hahaha and yeah I'm a very serious disco driver I love it so much but the Jeeps are everywhere down here and they really are just better even though they're trendy a dime a dozen they're better

      Your one of those blind ass holes who does not notice the tires on the Jeep. The Disco isn’t even the main off road car Rover makes. The wrangler is the main off roader that Jeep makes. Your comment is a display in American Ignorance. It’s especially funny since Jeep is now Italian property.

    • @JuanHernandez-pz2mx
      @JuanHernandez-pz2mx 6 лет назад +7

      Ghetto, let's do talk about ignorance; I will address each one of your points in same order as you made them.
      1) The tyres on all these cars are part of the Factory Kit; if the Jeep was better prepared for an off-road test, don't cry foul; blame Land Rover for making urban life first priority for the Discovery. Your point is invalid.
      2) The Discovery is not LR's top Off Roader, this is true, but neither is the base Wrangler shown; the Wrangler Rubicon is even more impressive, and I would suggest the the two door Wrangler Rubicon would fare even better and for considerably less money than the Discovery or the Range Rover. Again, your point is invalid.
      3)Your attempt at making fun about the fact that Jeep is now owned by FCA LLC is especially ironic when you consider that Land Rover has been owned by British Leyland, then BMW, then FORD, and is currently an Indian property, as in TATA motors. Once again your point is invalid.
      The bitch about calling anyone ignorant is the fact that you have to make sure you know that person is wrong AND, most important, knowing that you are right; you have failed here too. Hit me up if you would like some Trolling classes (or go practice in Reddit)

    • @ghettomist1575
      @ghettomist1575 6 лет назад

      Juan Hernandez Ok I guess I gotta day something now lmfao. First of all I never said Land Rover was a british car, and quite frankly I couldn’t care less, however Americans do act like Jeep is American when it really is a Italian car. Also the Wrangler is definitely more of an off roader than the discovery. The wrangler itself is their top off roader, the Rubicon is the best trim level for off roading in a wrangler. I don’t get what you are saying. The wrangler and the G wagon for that matter are dedicated off roaders so surely they would have an advantage. Also sure the tires may be factory but that doesn’t mean it is fair all of a sudden. The tires also give the wrangler an advantage. I don’t care if it is factory, it’s still an uneven comparison. The defender would be a more equal car but that’s not in production as of now. It’s a shame Rover makes such shitty cars now, the discovery we had was a real off roader, now they just build soccer mom cars. Anyway yes I would like your trolling classes because your reply was actually pretty good and well done. I still disagree, but hey that’s just me.

    Sorry Autocar guys - maybe a fun afternoon at the quarry but an off-road comparison it was not! None of the vehicles tested belong in the same class (Disco and Prado perhaps?), and the methodology for testing proved very little about the capabilities of the vehicles. A time trial to determine the "Best Off-roader"? - just absurd! Well, at least we were spared the usually very predictable conclusion by a Bri'ish presenter, and a non-Land Rover was picked as the winner!
