I did buy used at less than a half of original price with just 33000 km in BC Canada. Most things happened to it including a sudden windshield leak. It is a very needy car, especially if it’s diesel. Had a few instances of reduced performance due to exhaust sensors and the diesel exhaust plugged up. Anyways there is always something, but still like the style and comfort. Other cars look like products of anti design conspiracy. Also have Kia shortage 2011. Discovery looks so over designed. So many things could be simpler and more efficient. Hood opening lever is total shit. Kia has it way better.

I've owned Land Rovers for over 20 years and have been very lucky so far. I've had a D2, D3, D4 and currently a L320 Range Rover Sport (which is essentially a D4 underneath). All of them have been great vehicles. Comfortable, capable off road and stylish. However, my time with the brand is coming to an end once I take delivery of my Land Cruiser 300. Why? Because I feel like I have used up my 9 lives with LR, and reliability is becoming more important to me as I get older.
I loved my range rover sport but it's also the only car that I have owned that I felt was deliberately trying to piss me off. I ended up getting rid of it and bought a patrol. Was going to get a land cruiser but patrol had such good service history it was too good to pass up on

I have my disco 5 for the last 2yrs.... by far the coolest jeep i have driven. No issues. These type of videos are available for every model of vehicle, they all have issues. Previously had landcruiser which i loved but serious injector problems which i fixed and continued on for years after. This discovery is a new level of enjoyment.... deal with issues if they arise or if u want to stay wrapped in cotton wool, Buy a bicycle.... lol

Best way I could describe land rover is that they make lovely rubbish. I loved my range rover but it's the only truck I've ever had that has made me want to take a bat to it. So so many issues for vehicles that really should be better made for the price. My advice is if you have the money for it go for it just accept it could make you very un happy. I personally have a 03 ranger and a 05 patrol. I love them easy to fix, reliable and they both look pretty good in my opinion.
I have a Landrover discovery HSE luxury. Honestly it’s a great car. 65,000 miles 5 years old and so far only thing went wrong was a window regulator which was fixed under warranty. The car literally has everything works. I think the only thing that does happen is the infotainment system takes and extra 10-15 seconds when it’s very hot. I believe most issues with cars are because of how it’s used, short trips, not being used regularly ect. But if used all the time they are a great runner.
Proud owner of a 2017 Disco 5 (in the signature color Namib Orange). My only regret is not owning this car when I was high school so I could be the coolest kid in the parking lot 😆. Otherwise, love love love my problem free car! Massage/heated seats for 1st row, 2nd and 3rd row also has heated seats. Sound system is fantastic, the interior is very sleek, compliments on the car in the day and night!
I've owned two. Incredible vehicles. Both in their driving and off-road capability and their explosive unreliability. And yet we Land Rover dummies come back for more. I make no excuses for my stupidity

As a mechanic if you want your vehicle to last. Servicing every 10,000kms is a must. Do not believe all the marketing BS from many car makers out there pushing extended service intervals. No engine in current production will last with extended service intervals that is a fact. You are asking for trouble as things will break. As for batteries draining that is just a product of all modern cars having way too many computer modules in them. I have a 2013 mazda CX-5 AWD 2.5 It has 140,000kms still has the original battery.
Ultimate LR Discovery for me is my 1996 300tdi. No complex electronics, easy to fix (done head gasket and timing belt etc) and for me, a good looking 4x4.
Good review! I think you are spot on by saying owning the Discovery 5 is a gamble with the odds not on your side. I think its very true of all new JLR products. I have relatives that own new/ish Land Rovers and the maintenance cost is eye watering. Their off road Terrain Response is fantastic but also infuriating. I'm a massive Land Rover fanatic but I've learnt that any JLR product designed by Gerry McGovern will give you problems. Call me old fashioned but I miss the days when Land Rover had proper engineers such as Gordon Bashford, Spen King and David Bache.
Anyone who is considering buying one of these cars should google the name Sally Morphy. I know her car was a Range Rover but they are made by the same company as Land Rover. Buy one at your peril. In regards to the rear number plate, lets just say that if I owned a vehicle with such a feature my OCD would be going through the roof.
I am here for the video but I am really interested in the comments. I am waiting for the comment section to fill up with owners claiming their Land Rover has accrued over a million kilometers without so much a burnt out numberplate bulb. They have only required a occasional oil change and windshield washer fluid top up. Unicorns do exist but the occasional reliable/durable example doesn't reflect the ownership experience of a overwhelming majority of people who buy them.
SOS tips: Diesel 2L: STAY AWAY Diesel 3L 2017: STAY AWAY Diesel 3L 2018: gamble Diesel 3L after 2019 is OK Standard windshields almost certainly will leak. Replace with Pilkington glass Windscreens. Not standard again. Electric deployable towbars fail but there is replacement motors available after market. The whole part is too expensive Doors window glasses collapse after time because the wires that retain them rust quickly. Air springs fail at random, like in all cars with air springs. When the gesture tailgates fail (sensor issues), your tailgate will open at random and perhaps will get damaged. Deactivate gesture tailgate feature by removing fuse F49. Change the ZF gearbox oil every 80-90k kms for a long life. These are most of the main issues. Cheers. PS. I have been offroading with my daily drivers Discovery Sport, and Evoque for 11 years and now the Disco5. Only a gearbox controller failure to report, cost of 400 euros.
Bought one with 150 miles on clock, horrendous experience, new wiring loom needed after a few months {water ingress damage} in dealership for three months, also water ingress through roof when it rained and on-and on. KEEP AWAY.
I've known many happy owners who have never had any issues with their Land Rover's. The Discovery 4 is their best model I reckon, but the first gen one was pretty great too. SDV6 engine is an absolute beast. I wouldn't hesitate to own one, find a good independent mechanic and enjoy..
Complete and utter piece of sh##. I had one for less than 12 months it was in and out of the dealership most of that time. Didn’t help the dealership was run by untrained monkeys that didn’t know one end of their product from the other. Even called the local OEM for help, no reply. My wife has had a $15 hairdryer for 24years that’s more reliable. I traded it in ( the Land Rover not the hairdryer ) for a brand new Mazda CX9 7 seater which I drove for 11years and 180,000 kms with 3 kids and enough gear to survive an Armageddon. It never ever ever missed a beat and looked new until the day I sold it. If you’re considering buying any Land Rover product what so ever get a friend to slam your fingers in a door, times that by 10 and that is how painful the ownership experience will be. Keep up the great work team ReDriven your saving consumers $$$$$$$$$
I Follow what u say, but, if u had heaps of problems with the CX9 in first 12 months, then what ? U had a great ownership experience with CX9,which is great, but, not every CX9 is perfect Would be easy to find forums filled with owners talking of bad experiences with CX9..

Most people who slag Land Rover off have never owned one. I’ve had many over the years yes I’ve had a few issues but you get that with all cars. Just service when your meant to and look after them
I have driven LOTS of Land-Rovers. My first car was a 1954 Series I with rust and an asthmatic engine. I wish I still had it. Then came about 30 other Land Rovers from Series I, IIa, III, etc etc. I also had several Classic Range Rovers. All were second hand. The biggest repair I had on all of them was a leaking heater radiator. All were thirsty but I had very few mechanical problems apart from the first Series I which was totally clapped out. These days I am driving a Discovery 2 Td5. It had one previous owner and I bought it with about 211,000 km on it. Apart from services it has not needed any work on it. It is now 20 years old and I think I will have to have some small leaks attended too but it has generally been very reliable. But would I buy a recent Land Rover? No thanks. I'll keep the Disco and the Subaru Outback. Mike in Oz
My sister bought a HSE in 22 and none of us have the time nor the patience to go through all the things that went wrong with in the 10k km she put on it before realizing the car had obviously been made by Satan himself. Some of the pearlers were it needing new brake discs after, I kid you not, 100km. Nope, not 100.000 and not 1000 either. One hundred kilometers. The explanation she got from the dealer was 'they were glazed'. Mind you, my sister is a doctor who drives slower than gramma on her way back from the bingo. Reverse camera would work 'maybe' 30% of the time and that's despite the dealer throwing all kinds of parts at it. It would simply say 'cameras not available' and you just had to live with that. To add salt to the wound, when that happened it would knock out the parking sensors!! Some times the Android Auto/Apple Carplay connectivity would test your mental health as well. On self selected days you'd start the car and it would hook itself up wirelessly in seconds, other days you would try all the tricks in the book and it would simply not work. Or it would magically turn itself on about 40min into your drive. Also, the car went through 2 front wheel bearings in those 10k ks. Just bizarre. 'Lucky' for her the car was new and still under warranty and because she sold it after the 1st year she didn't lose as much as she should have but it's safe to say she's never buying another Land Rover. Ever.
I had SUCH an appalling experience with Land Rover back in the day; I owned a first-gen 1998 Freelander (OMG you guys should do a historic video on those - shockingly horribly awful) and then, as I obviously hadn't learned my lesson, I went back for another round with a 2000 TD5 Disco - within 2 years I had used up ALL the extended warranty - injector loom, 2 gearboxes, air bags, trim coming away left, right & centre, endless irregular electronic gremlins (the worst kind as you can't isolate them) etc etc etc.. I sold it in 2008 and vowed NEVER to return to this ridiculously over-hyped brand... so you can imagine my literal amazement to find out in this vid that they're STILL UTTER CRAP - WHO IS BUYING THESE THINGS?? OMG
Outstanding review as usual AK. Legend mate. Having enjoyed the honey moon period with a HSE RR Sport with a number of issues, I'm happy to say Porsche Macan fills all voids.
I loved mine, but, yes, they are the worst car to own and.. the best. It was amazing offroad, so comfortable, so capable, but... soooo expensive and riddled with issues. I'd never own one again. But... also i might.. as a second car that I couldn't trust as being my work daily.
Watching this now and I would have one of these in a heartbeat if I had the money, so I have settled for my 2014 Jeep GC Overland, love it. I think I love cars others seem to hate.
After a first gen Range Rover, 2 110 Defendes, one diesel, one petrol. Magnificent when its going. But when things start to go wrong, electronics, mechanically, thats when you will never buy another LR product again. Spare parts must be gold plated, or thas what the prices suggest, and availability is a serious issue. On top of that, the drop in value each year, will drive you pulling your hair out. The LR Experiance is not worth the cost. No thank you.
I have never owned a Disco and I thought after seeing the first half of this video, it would be a great vehicle to own THEN the second half put paid to any of those dreams. What a shocker......
I must be the only person who hasnt had trouble. 3 landrovers over 20 yrs and hardly a problem. Had lots of so-called good brands and they have been dreadfully unreliable. Give me a Landrover any day. No car is perfect.
The problem with all these long service intervals with all manufacturers is that so many new cars are leased as company cars and the lease cost is based on the long service interval so no matter what the owner/drivers think the car will not get adequate oil changes, so if you are buying 3-4 year old ex-lease cars avoid anything with higher mileages like the plague no matter who made it.
Reminds me of the Astronaut that was asked if anything bothered him about being shot into space and his answer was "Knowing that everything was built to the lowest tender".
Good Review, I have 2018 Disco Hse, 3.0 D 127k Kms, also 5 seater like yours, no sunroof either, they are called “Commercial” in Europe, leaking windscreen, yep, infotainment system goes for lunch every now and then, yep, everything else all good, It’s quirky but I love it, does everything you want it to do and then some, some good comments here, some funny ones too and quite a few people on the band wagon.
We sat behind one of these the other day and the first impression was that it had been hit on the left with the offset number plate. Why are you obsessed with phone spots? Put the phone away and only see it again when you exit the vehicle.
The best Range Rover I've ever had (I've only ever had one tee Hee) was a 1978 2 door with the 3.5 V8 and twin SU carbs only! It was bodily rough but the engine ran as sweet as a nut!
When this body shape was released I thought these look great but greatness needs to be more than skin deep & consistent reliability across the range is not too much to expect. It is the 2020's, my simple base model SUV from 2014 may not excite anyone but has been reliable so far & a lot cheaper to purchase when new, but I look after it.Servicing is before every 10,000 at 6 month intervals & run on 95 Ron even though it can run on 91.
Regarding the rear Number plate placement. There is a Company in England. That will reskin the back panel. To put the number plate back, in its correct spot. 👌 😄
Thanks Adam & Jim - only perceived status-driven citizens will own Landrovers and SW & Western Sydney Mercedes chariots - anyone with some modicum of awareness knows how bad these brands are and oh did I also mention Jeep and Ford - a shame because Land Rover design aesthetics are pleasing to the eye - my friend bought a Landrover Sport as a style accessory and she’s regretted it ever since because the value has dropped catastrophically due to it’s reputation and she will lose a lot of $’s on sale - if it’s not Japanese I’m not interested.
I have a 2019 with the 3 litre supercharger gad, it is old jaguar engine where all the flaw has been fixed. Just love the Discovery . high and not as wide as other SUV. Only issue change 3 exhaust sensors.
My friend purchased a 2nd hand one of these, kept it for 4 years with a mileage for over 80,000, serviced it regularly (Not at Land Rover) but at a specialist. He did not have one problem with it, he's now on his second one. Don't just rely on youtubers with click bate headlines.
D5 td6 snapped crank at 55000km, complete engine destroyed. Jlr covered engine replacement. Windscreen leaked , rear door out of adjustment, sunroof leak, for lock system failure, just a small list of problems with our family's d5.
I have owned several LRs, to include a Disco 5. I loved this car with the exception of the FOB... it always locked me out, and it often would not start the vehicle even when I could get inside. LR was never able to fix it. Traded it for a Defender First Edition (5th LR), and I was equally let down.
Obviously has inherit electrical problems, they will only get worse as the vehicle ages, the other issues in Australia is dust, and electronics do not mix. One to keep in the City.
I own one of these and dont agree with any of the stuff going wrong mentioned in the vid. The windshield has a recall out here in Canada and I'm at 105000 miles or 170000 km and no issues maintenance at 12k km oil change and a few other service stuff and not a single problem.
True. I own a Discovery 5 bought with 10.000 kms, now 115.000 kms and it is still running strong besides the (repaired) windshield leak and a weak battery.
When the LR3/Disco 3 later 4 came out it's issues led to the same internet meltdown. Now nearly all of those faults have been worked out and the realisation of the general 2000's issue of not using longlife service intervals and too light oils means it is now well known how to keep them reliable and fix their foibles as easily and cheaply as possible. (apart from the randomly self-destructing cranks in the later 3.0 versions of the Ford Peugeot TDV6 - nothing you can do about that , either gets you or it doesn't)
Had to return to the UK last Nov. Had the opportunity to go beating at a farmers pheasant shoot. The yard was full of RRs LRs & LDs, a lonely BMW and an obviously poor farmer's Mitsubishi. After the days shooting I asked the owners what they thought of them. Universal reply was "Expensive shit, but you have to have one coz they are good when they work".
Land Rover is truly the Adam's Apple in the throat of the Hong Kong dancer...quite possibly the hottest, but a treasure trove of horror and guilt awaits the rookie.
“Why do most hateful comments come from people who’ve never owned one?” I’ve just scrolled through the comments….not sure you’re being genuine by that comment. Unless of course you have something to hide?
My DPF blow after 30k km, it was just displaying check engine light in orange/yellow. When I informed my service tehnician he said its good its not red??? After too many visits to service ( 8 ) they changed the whole DPF system costing too much but it was taken by guarantee cover. Its great vehicle but the problems everybody saying scaring me how it will be in the future, for now: DPF, emergency monitors going off, rear camera…i have bought extended warranty but staying at service and driving it there is frustrating, sometimes few times a month.
So mate, this is what happens. I see an suv, like it, then watch your review of it and so far, there is not a single suv that you have actually recommended be it X5, Q7, XC90 or even this one. I am in desperate need of recommendation for a RELIABLE used 7 seater that is available out there. If anyone can help, please do.
I borrowed a mates RR Sport, it was lovely to drive and felt so special. Would I buy any LR my own money? No chance. I don’t even like the look of the Disco.
Man, my experience with a 2011 Range Rover Sport HSE, loved it, I miss that car today. But, drive shaft issues, turbo issues after 150,000 klms. Don't do it. Unless you think pay the premium, trade at three years and buy another one. If you can afford this type of outlay, go for it. Otherwise, do what I did and buy a Genesis.
Have a look at the RUclips channel LR Time if you want to get an idea how reliable the V6 Ford Turbo Diesel is. It is hard to know how many catastrophic faults can be put into one engine.
I love LR cars - They represent what cars / SUV should be - But I have had some issues - I could not believe it could even happen ( I did not even think It's possible to happen) I lived in SL and had a discovery for no of years - one of the issue that bugged me the most - During winter season ( bit of a foggy season) the car would build up condensation like you would not believe. I would have to constantly wipe the windows and build moist so much. and eventually I had rust issue. 2nd issue that stand out from my experience - electrical F**** ups. ( Remote key stopped working, window mirror is would not adjust, and electric seat stopped working, , wipers stopped working no of times , the list goes on) Saying all of that I loved that car - It was a company car so I did not mind the cost - the headache was real.
I'm always shocked that people will buy a car that'll turn into a money pit before even reaching a measly 100,000km's. If you have to replace some aspect of the suspension or other fairly easy repair then that's one thing but a catastrophic engine failure is just silly. More money than sense!
Two points; 1. Q. What is a Toyota? A. A Land Rover recovery vehicle. 2. If you want to get to the Outback, take a Land Rover, If you want to come back, take a Toyota.
Such a shame. I've wanted a disco for such a long time, and it's perfect for my family but so many people I know have had such major issues with discos, lr's and rr's that I just can't face the risk and potential costs associated, catastrophic engine failure?!
Don't be put off. The D5 is the best car I have ever owned. They are fantastic is every respect. Just don't buy a 4 cylinder variant. These should have been recalled. In saying this JLR come to the party and pay for the repairs most of the time.
I have had a disco 4 for 7 years and no real issues. I think the secret is regular maintenance and I changed the oil every 6k miles and this keeps the engine sweet. Fuel is another thing I am wary of. I never buy from a supermarket, they have less detergents than regular petrol stations. I have now changed to a D5 and as for reliability guess time will tell. I have had it for six months now and love every time I jump into it, there is nothing else like it on the road, life is short and if you want one go and get it. I promise you will not be disappointed. On the other hand go with your head and buy something sensible and die of boredom
Unless I missed it in the video, you missed the massive change in engines from the massively unreliable Ford V6 diesel to the JLR Ingenium straight six engines, both diesel and petrol.
Other brands do have issues, you’re right. We’re not saying they don’t, but Land Rover are statistically worse than others. Check out the latest JD power report in the states, Land Rover are dead last for reliability. With almost twice the problems as top-placed Lexus. Jaguar are only a couple of places better. So saying JLR products are a gamble to buy, where the odds are not in your favour, isn’t a band wagon statement, it’s a fact.
Land/Range Rover are great looking cars and the interiors also look amazing BUT they let themselves down with poor reliability and customer service. For what they charge for their vehicles they should be at the pinnacle of reliability and customer care. Come on Land/Range Rover go take a look at Lexus to see how its done.
This breaks my heart. The range rovers are lovely to drive, and I hoped that they would sort their engineering issues out since the Freelander epic disaster. I bought one a few years ago, loved it so much but discovered (after the previous owner spent thousands on issues) that coolant was pooling in places where it shouldn't, and mechanically designed, it's a messed up car. They need a different tactic because I want a range rover but refuse to buy until they sort their shit out!!

FYI, if anybody considers this an English vehicle consider this; it is manufactured in Slovakia by an Indian company. Nothing British about it except the reliability
What a British comment
JLR is simply spending Indian money as Tata owns them. That's where that link ends.

So so many issues for vehicles that really should be better made for the price. My advice is if you have the money for it go for it just accept it could make you very un happy.

I have a 2013 mazda CX-5 AWD 2.5
It has 140,000kms still has the original battery.
Anyone who is considering buying one of these cars should google the name Sally Morphy. I know her car was a Range Rover but they are made by the same company as Land Rover. Buy one at your peril.

Electric deployable towbars fail but there is replacement motors available after market. The whole part is too expensive
Doors window glasses collapse after time because the wires that retain them rust quickly.

It’s good to see you drive on the correct side of the road!!
The best thing about Land Rover is every once in a while it is out of the dealer repair service and you can actually drive it
Complete and utter piece of sh##.
Mike in Oz
The more tech you cram in , the more chance of something going wrong.
I can imagine the temptation to tread the middle ground in reviewing. I appreciate the honesty.
Ever.
Wow thats really shocking. I was considering land rover used Discovery. For 26 k. But I'll take your advice.
OMG
So what do you drive now?

I must be the only person who hasnt had trouble. 3 landrovers over 20 yrs and hardly a problem. Had lots of so-called good brands and they have been dreadfully unreliable. Give me a Landrover any day. No car is perfect.
The problem with all these long service intervals with all manufacturers is that so many new cars are leased as company cars and the lease cost is based on the long service interval so no matter what the owner/drivers think the car will not get adequate oil changes, so if you are buying 3-4 year old ex-lease cars avoid anything with higher mileages like the plague no matter who made it.

When this body shape was released I thought these look great but greatness needs to be more than skin deep & consistent reliability across the range is not too much to expect. Gary Oldman! I am watching Slow Horses series two, great show and actor.

Through work have driven a few Disco 4s and 5s. Very comfy and quick enough. Just don't want the cost of owning one.
I love my Disco, only ever do religiously service on mine
Modern vehicles should be reliable and durable which JLR vehicles have never been.
Most of these I see in 'Straya are in metro areas. Why do this when there are Lexi available?
I'm always shocked that people will buy a car that'll turn into a money pit before even reaching a measly 100,000km's. If you have to replace some aspect of the suspension or other fairly easy repair then that's one thing but a catastrophic engine failure is just silly. More money than sense!
Two points;
1. Q. What is a Toyota? A. A Land Rover recovery vehicle.
2. If you want to get to the Outback, take a Land Rover,
If you want to come back, take a Toyota.
...surprising that the off-road capability gets upgraded🙄
I live in Abu Dhabi, there are thousands of these here and have never seen one off-road.
Unless I missed it in the video, you missed the massive change in engines from the massively unreliable Ford V6 diesel to the JLR Ingenium straight six engines, both diesel and petrol.
lets jump on the band wagon and slate JLR reliability, its NOT JUST JLR that have reliability issues, other brands have issue too.
Very true mate, however, according to countless reports and surveys, JLR have more reliability issues per vehicle manufactured than most. - AK
@@ReDriven we’ll never know how much is down to the dealership too and not just the car 😉
Just buy after making a good testing and checking service history. If it is bang for the buck buy it.
Only buy a 2nd hand one if you are a LR mechanic that has the gear needed To work on it if something goes catastrophically wrong!
