Derek And The Dominos - It's Too Late - Live on The Johnny Cash TV Show 1971

- The legendary Derek and the Dominos doing their only ever TV appearance on the Johnny Cash TV Show back in 1971... making this video quite special in my opinion!
The track is "It's Too Late" from, what I would consider to be, one of the greatest albums of all time "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs".
Considering it is their only TV appearance I couldn't tolerate the quality of the only video currently on youtube so took matters in to my own hands - a bit of a departure from my usual uploads but I hope you enjoy :)
Derek and the Dominos:
Eric Clapton - vocals, lead guitar
Duane Allman - slide guitar (sadly not present in this video)
Bobby Whitlock - piano, keyboards, rhythm guitar, vocals
Jim Gordon - drums, percussion, piano
Carl Radle - bass guitar, percussion
If these guys could have stayed together they would be considered one of the five greatest groups ever by the public. One more freaking album would have been golden, what a shame.
Bobby Whitlock was such a perfect compliment to Clapton's playing and singing (although I was a little afraid that the vein in his right temple might explode during this song). I like that they introduced Bobby's name first. I wish that he and Clapton had collaborated more over the years. He certainly would have breathed some life into Erik's less-energetic late 70's/early 80s output
I really don’t understand how Bobby Whitlock wasn’t a huge star. He had such a great voice and great skills on keyboard. Every song on that Layla album has Whitlock singing background or lead and it’s great. Seemed like he was good looking too so you’d figure he would have become more notorious. Don’t get it. I feel like he could have been a huge country music star, at minimum
If you look up Bobby's stories here on RUclips with his wife CoCo Carmel, He's got a story about why Johnny said his name first. That wasn't the first take of that introduction. Do yourself a favor and listen to his many stories about his amazing career with Delaney and Bonnie, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and The Dominos among many of his later achievements. You won't be disappointed.
Bless his sweet heart, Bobby is still alive and kickin. The other Dominoes have had tragic deaths, but I've seen Whitlock's stuff on You Tube and he still has a fairly sharp mind and can still go. I just don't know why Eric has kept his distance from him---they should get together more
I never tire of Derek and the Dominos, never will...
How Eric has changed over the years, blimey, almost like he sheds his skin and comes back as someone new.
But that wonderful voice is the same. 😍
I know what you mean. My wife and I always say that there are at least 5 Eric Clapton's.
He is quite the chameleon!
It's called aging.

Man, I wished Duane could have been there with them--that would have been CLASSIC!
I think that’s why they chose this tune specifically. They have a few better songs on the album but they all featured Duane. This is one of the few songs off that album that doesn’t feature him
Love that Johnny Cash mentioned all the members.
Johnny was like that.had a country boy's respect for others.
That happened because Bobby sort've made it happen. He tells the story on his RUclips channel.
What, no love for Bobby? Listen to that soulful voice!
I love him.
I adore Bobby Whitlock!! I think I said that?
He's such a huge part of this tune and the whole album. All love for that guy.
Oh, f@$% yeah! All the love in the world.
No, absolutely none. Terrible, isn't it?
Johnny Cash was a man who stood up for the counter culture at a time (1971) when our country was so very divided..."hippies' and "straights'. Thank you Johnny, you helped make it safe to walk around with long hair in middle America!
In 1971 the counterculture was on life support in the U.S. Woodstock in 1969 was counterculture's death rattle.
If you doubt this, research what Haight-Ashbury was like in 1971.
Amen, I'm five years behind the post.
Scott English...thanks for your truth. In your words....iv had longhair and play ed...since iheard mr.jimi Hendrix at 10 then 2ndledzepplen two and Johnny cash was a man who led me to put what i really have to say in words and just switched around the self taught chords he made me realize you didn't have to play like page or mr.jimi thank you Johnny cash and iis so cool to seeing Eric carl cash and my Lord every player in domino s.....the best band form
Because Johnny was a drug addict
Adams Apple never spit to the sky cause it’ll probably fall down in your face... don’t judge regardless of the situation people have dealt with.
The fact these guys had a double album of exceptional work put together so quickly was amazing. That is how magical the early seventies were.
The magic of drugs lol
Jim Gordon, one of the best drummers the world has ever seen.
Minus the whole killing his mom thing
Boygs ManJr Yeah, 32 years he's been in jail! And he's still there.
Yeah, too bad about severe schizophrenia. It runs in his paternal side.
He played with Traffic too
Don't forget one of the best police commissioners the world has ever seen too
Bobby Whitlock and the rhythm section are just nigh on perfect here
So, they're playing this relatively simple blues song....but Gordon and Radle are such a force of nature that you want to dance to it. Those two guys made the band. They were incredible.
Clapton: "she's gone"
Bobby Whitlock: hold my beer
Bobby nailed it
Dark humour guys very hot
@@axelvelastro2823your cute
@@rupertpupkin5265 you want my autograph in your collection?
I know Duane was busy with the brothers; but damn would have liked to see him on stage here.
Duane was in top 3 . FABULOUS slide guitar ! Whipping post at filmore, best live ever ! Greatings from France all.
So sad we don't have more footage of this great line up of great musicians playing live.
Clapton is very Handsome 😊
This is my all time favourite clapton guitar solo just amazing clean sound and tone from that strat (browine)
His usual “woman tone” doesn’t impress me, especially when you have guys like Jeff Beck and even Jimi with far superior tone. I agree with you that he sounds great here.
Christian Gasior stfu
mine too (with the "wee wee hours" solo)
THIS is your all time favorite Clapton solo? Wow...
@@runreilly yeah, to me it sounded like he just .... ran out of steam on it.....
I gotta say for a live performance on a TV show this is stellar! I love the vocals of Bobby Whitlock w/ Clapton!!
+nancy darkes-stiles Glad you commented on His vocals that complimented Mr. Clapton.
Oh I love Bobby Whitlock for sure! Thankyou for your comment Bruce!!
Bruce Fink Yes ..they sing well back and forth with each other! It makes the song!! For me anyway!
I totally agree. Love his voice.
Clapton and Whitlock 👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️
Dominique M hello, this is Jeff Lanham and I was Bobby Whitlock's drummer in the mid '90s, (before I moved on with Buddy Miles)....when he still had that great Memphis gospel rawness! We actually toured a bit w/ 'The Band' and recorded an entire album at Sun Studio...maybe it will be released someday soon, I think you would love it!
They could not have done so well without the drummer and the bass player.
Dominique M What about Raddle and Gordon
There isn't one thing about this performance that isn't phenomenal. In closing, God bless, the man in black.
When TV variety shows were great entertainment. Featuring REAL musicians who could sing and perform "live".
Right on bro, now it's all nobody's, mostly picked for their looks, moulded by a team of idiot's, forcing on us what they think we should listen to, a conveyor belt as such, whilst real talent is stifled, I feel like the grumpy old man down the street, it seems people do it for the money and fame rather than the art, auto tune and miming, gimme the money. peace and love bro, from an angry old hippie.🌼
You boomers are assholes for saying that.
without a doubt one of the best solo I've heard live 2:13
Jim Gordon...RIP ..espero que ahora hayas encontrado la paz y tranquilidad que siempre buscaste.
The incredible Bobby Whitlock!
Gregory Larry w
Gregory Larry don't forget the incredible Carl Radle and Jim Gordon
Gregory Larry Yeah, Bobby sang the shit out of that and everything else he did,
Yep, that whole group was on fire. Too bad they weren't stable; I'd have loved to have seen them keep going. I also think "Tell the Truth" to be their greatest track, more even than "Layla."
Absolutely love ' tell the truth ' on the ' Layla … album
The amazing Jim Gordon, on drums. Pay attention kids.
WOW! 🤘
sad he had mental troubles
Agree, Kids pay attention, Jim Gordon one of the finest, a master at beat, rhythm, and tempo - homework for all wanna be drummers listen to Jim on Traffic "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys / "Welcome to the Canteen, also on Tim Weinberg "Hurtwood Edge" / "Dreamspeaker", and definitely on the Incredible Bongo Band song "Apache"
Slip of the old fingers, Tim Weinberg should read Tim Weisberg
@@Skunk90210 Who doesnt now.. ?
That solo in the middle towards the end is the icing on the cake for this song.
Jim Gordons drumming , what a piece of genius.
Demented genius. Jk sorta. I love great session players. He knows when to hold back and when to let loose a little, but the rhythm section here is ever careful not to get in the way of Clapton, whom I dislike but his solo here is excellent.
The drummer was tripping one day, went to his Mom's and murdered her. !!! Check it out.
Betty Scoggins with a hammer right? Sick fuck
@@christiangasior4244 .....Hi Christian, First thank you for noticing Jim Gordon's talent, it always gets shoved under the rug and that horrible crime that ended his career and his family, gets noticed more and i'm in no way making allowances for him, he knew something was wrong, what he and his doctors didn't know was that he was suffering from straight up paranoid schizophrenia and the drugs didn't help at all..but none of it can be taken back ..now so incredibly sad all around....secondly I was just curious why it is you state you don't care for Eric Clapton and again I'm just curious.....this era and this band and with Duane was.....was to me the best guitar playing of Eric Clapton's career period ! He and Duane Allman were mind blowing together, and there isn't enough to be said about this rhythm section, Bobby Whitlock and the whole dam band to me was stellar, and at the height of their playing powers ! All while being higher than a kite ! In the 70's I couldn't even chew gum and walk at the same time after smoking weed for Christ's sake LOL I'm just curious what your take on Clapton was all about and it's your valued opinion.. We all have one....thanks for listening! PEACE.....Lori
@@lorrainecostanzo8925 I agree with you totally, hearing EC's playing with D&D inspired me to pick up a guitar a million yrs ago and I still love to play along to their music. Interesting your 'friend' hasn't come back to you lol
What a great show this was.
I emigrated to Canada at 6 yrs old in 68.
My pops had emigrated 2yrs earlier in order to bring my mom and my 3 yr old twin sisters over.
He would put this on our black and white Dumont tv,and I was transfixed.
I became a music lover.
A few years later I got a funky little record player for X-mas from my folks.
First album I bought was Johnny Cash's greatest hits.
I often listen to this very recording because it's included in the deluxe edition of the Layla album, and I always love listening to Bobby Whitlock's vocals. From reading the comments here, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I like to see Bobby getting the love he deserves.
What a great band this was.
It's nice to see one of the 'inventors' of the distorted rock guitar sound plug his guitar straight into amp, no FX and not dimed for volume - just being played with feel and restraint.
Best clapton lineup hands down !
cream
@@7rxbbo769 nah
I remember watching this on TV. Its got a crazy feel that bounces between Buddy Holly ( with Gordon nailing Jerry Allison) and then straight into Clapton & Whitlock doing the best blue eyed version of Sam and Dave ever!
And, even though Clapton was mentioned, it STILL took another year for the album to start selling! Guess some people didn't catch Johnny saying the names!
This was the last incarnation of Clapton real inspiration IMHO. Derek And The Dominos were a good band and played really well, it's a pleasure to hear this stuff...
My favorite drummer after Ringo Starr is Jim Gordon..Saw him live and he killed it..Listening to the concert and all of a sudden all I could hear were these drums, not for volume, just pure musicianship.
Carl Radle an elite player on bass. This sure is a long ways away from his days playing with Gary Lewis and the Playboys!
He was really amazing; love everything he did....
bobbys voice is amazing
God it never gets old..
Jim Gordon on drums. He and Jim Keltner was Jeff Porcaro's biggest influences.
Check out my quote just pretty much said the same thing. Jeff took over for Jim in some respects and then Keltner pulled up further
When you said this he was alive but as I say this he is dead 😢
That's as clean a Strat sound as anyone has ever played ..Whitlock's Voice is amazing ..Just Killer..
+Steve McEvoy its kinda dirty
Real players. Real voices. No computer stuff, and LIVE. The real deal. No real bands anymore, just mixes with a pretty face.
lindsay thompson Amen to that
lindsay thompson sigh ..... yep, thats what we're exposed to ..... unfortunately. But, there are bands out there, practicing, working, touring etc.......and I've heard some amazing talent, but its super tough to make a living off it these days as NO station plays new music on the radio anymore, thus theres no motivation to try and make living being in a band. Market research says there's more $$$ watching Kanye look like a tool in front of millions than hearing/watching a talented group of musicians. Mind you, back in the 70's most of the rock bands who sold tons of albums did so by word of mouth first, then airplay (hopefully) later............. but the world has changed.
My good friend and extremely talented musician said to me recently: "do you know the difference between a large domino's pepperoni pizza and a trained guitar player?....the pizza can feed a family of 3"....
+filolovejoy Right, word of mouth, college radio and the rare FM progressive stations but that was earlier than the 70's. By the early to mid 70's, rock music was becoming commercialized, not necessarily in content but in marketing. Music of the counterculture wasn't even known by the mainstream market until late '68. Songs like Sunshine of Your Love and Nights In White Satin were getting their first AM radio airplay long after the release of the albums that those songs were on. The world and music certainly has changed
+if6was929 You are exactly right. The underground FM stations would play this fantastic music that was longer that v AM stations standard of 3 minutes per song. That so they could sell their ads. And it was in fact word of mouth, FM stations, then came the Rock Festivals. Camping out for the weekend and listing to great acts. Altamont put an end to that. That was the thing I hated. That being the negative video e that the bikers brought to the rock fests. They did not seem to buy in to peace and love. It was more like INTIMIDATING. There I said it.
and Jim Gordon :)
Every damn time! This never gets old..Bobby singing his butt off and Clapton getting so into it he baybaby's it! F ing great stuff!
Eric Clapton what a great guitarist ranks in the top five of all time.
A Country "Legend" hosting his own show with a British Icon!! Just EXCELLENT..
I knew when Bobby left Memphis;he would become a star.....obviously he made it.
The drummer here Jim Gordon, was considered the #1 session drummer by recording studio's and even other drummers, like Jim Keltner. Jim co-wrote Layla with EC, with Eric later saying "Jim was the best drummer, I've ever worked with." He drummed on tons of recordings during the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, he had paranoid schizophrenia, was hearing voices and killed his mother. I believe he is still in prison.
he took over the throne for Hal Blaine. He held it for a long time until Jeff Porcaro and Jim Keltner and also J R Robinson. These guys are the Kings West Coast drumming
The drummer killed his OWN MOM !!!!!!! LOOK IT UP. FACT.
La es58: Jim Gordon was released. It was proven that he was insane at the time. Many of his friends petitioned for his release. I do not what year it was.
beautiful Camco 60's set with that unfortunate "Dead" 70's sound... Gordon had this loose feel and perfect time, never seemed to play anything real flashy or memorable but always fit somehow...
@@johncalaway4446 He’s still serving his sentence at a medícal prison in California. He’s eligible for parole in March 2021.
Glad we have this recording of Derek and the Dominoes.
you can tell Clapton is still getting used to not having the Marshall overdrive to fall back on and envelop his playing in luscious harmonic overtones
Jim Gordon, I hope you're getting the help you need. Thank you for the all music.
That's exactly the way I feel. Thank you for saying it.
Clapton and Whitlock = genius
So soulful
Clapton is like a master of disguise, he can change his whole style with his hair, or beard and look totally different but still good looking. wow, I never knew he was ever on johnny cash!
But he rocked almost every style, except the fro, I didn't like the fro, but in some pictures he has a flow that's actually great looking
he had quite a big fro in Cream days
Yep
Anyone seen the showtime Clapton documentary that was on there last year a lot? He really came off as an unlikeable person to me. I had that sense before as well.
@@christiangasior4244 who fucking cares what you think?
Kick-ass vocals - my favorite of Bobby
No modern utter garbage computer stuff with gutter filthy language that makes little or no sense.
This is a breath of fresh air.
Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton what could be better than that.
S. E. A. IKR! I love both of them
I'm here e.c. singing with you andyour band loving the sunshine and the wind. Lara G.
Pretty good tone of the guitar amplifiers
.
I have Fender champ guitar amplifiers of the RCA tube and this tone is it.
Absolutely fantastic!! Derek and the Dominoes forever.
My God these guys were on top of their game.
Here Eric was at the peak of his game what a lead guitar man! not distortion nor nothing just the strato at it's best, , very hard someone else coming and feeling those shoes! BTW love his bell bottoms not extremely big just the way I like them lol
Jim Gordon, as a drummer, was otherworldly.
Man i just love Eric Clapton, one of the greatest ever
No wonder Jeff Porcaro idolized Jim Gordon as a drummer, this guy is impeccable. It's incredibly tragic he developed schizophrenia, but was misdiagnosed until his arrest. Had he received the proper treatment, maybe the story would've been different.
Well, at least there's plenty music to listen to and study from him.
A mad man in real life and the drums.
Jim would have learned from Brian Wilson though.
I remember being 5 years old and watching this on tv. Looking back, many a guitar player was born that night. I know of one, anyway.
I certainly do hear a lot of Hal Blaine in Jim’s playing. The pickup lines...the high hat triplets...etc. just wonderful playing. What a pro!
Man this is great music! Look at Bobby push Eric to to fullest.
Damn, the live vocals and guitar! That could've been the studio if not for the clapping.
love the sound of brownie....classic strat. good professional performance from this great band.
Thanks for posting this. It's really great. My only complaint....we can barely hear the piano. But still so glad that someone ....Johnny Cash of all people.....managed to capture this great band on film.
Been watching this for the last 5 years I think, blowing my mind every single time. And, cannot stop thinking in "Oh Darling!" by The Beatles with such a similar chord progression. Haha
Crazy raw talent.
Que buen tema por Dios!.👏👏👏
Just 4 of ‘em. What a sound! One of my favourite videos on RUclips. Sadly there’s not enough Dominoes footage anywhere.
This solo is easily one of my favorites of all time...love Clapton on the strat
Me too . Was lucky to see Cream in ‘68 in Miami and then Blind Faith at MSG a year later . Saw Eric about 12 years ago here in Jaxville . His solo on this just knocks me out ! His playing in his early days earned him the nickname “ God” , but I don’t think even God could top this solo 😆
My favorite song by this group of great musicians. If beauty was a minute this would an hour 😍👍✌️
Pure genius

Eric's solo mesmerizing
They are all amazing !
I like the sound of this group. And that singer plays a pretty decent guitar!

That's 4 and a half minutes of heaven right there!
Equipment, effects, and practice sure made Eric shine further
down the road. He looked a little shy during this appearance,
but they sounded well together. A great tune !
Clapton was never a fan of the frontman role.
Now THAT is really something to see, and hear on RUclips. What a great post! Thanks.
I just stumbled on to this video, Thank you for posting. Quite possible the best video on You Tube.
Killer Band. So sad about Jim. He was one of the best ever.
Whitlock is so underrated.. like seriously. I get it was all "guitar bands"... but damn so good.
Excellent music, that's the real thing
Jim what a frigging awesome shuffle, holy smokes! Tragic what happened to this drumming icon.
Tom Floor love that he is doing those doubles on the snare drum, that's just awesome! He basically inverted the shuffle groove and brought those doubles down from the ride to the snare - genius!
+Tom Floor He played with a ton of people as a session drummer..I think he even played on the Monkees first couple of albums.
Tim Scott I can't believe he lost it and did what he did to his mom, heartbreaking stuff man!
don't know what took me so long to say that Bobby Whitlocks vocals are slamming as usual!
Jim Gordon... One of the best Drummers ever. Awesome Player... too bad he's still in Prison. Probably in his 70's now....
71 to be exact and, yes, he is in prison. Not a place for him to be...
@@susanedrington3523 I think he's in a high security mental facility.

Bobby is amazing here, and Eric is dynamite on that brown Strat (I wonder if he still has it.) As Johnny said, these four guys put out a lot, they really did.
Indeed he did. A most gracious and generous musician and person, always giving back.
