Listen, I've 106%'d the game (still workin' on the Pure Vessel piece o' shite), and I *still* use the Wayward compass for any time I'm doing something that isn't fighting a boss. It's just so convenient.
Thorns and Pure Nail make an OVERPOWERED combo Thorns does the same damage as your (base) nail {not including strength charms of fury of the fallen} and has a very high chance of hitting twice if the boss doesn't dash through the hitbox. Pure nail does 21 base damage 21 x 2 = 42 At the cost of 1 charm notch, this will activate when you get hit Baldur shell takes 2 notches So for 3 notches, you can shield a hit and do 42 damage. TL;DR: Thorns does a lot of damage
It's actually makes PoP easier. You need that extra range. Sharp Shadow really fucked me up against NKG in Grimm Troupe at his Puffer Fish stage though, but in HoG I had no problem with it.
I love Sharp Shadow, my first kill on Pure Vessel was just Sharp Shadowing through him and everything else on healing charms. Got me to really learn his timings and now I can normally kill him on Radiant. Also my playstyle became so reliant on Sharp Shadow and other nail enhancers that it was one of the main reason I almost gave up on AR. I just couldnt get to her without my nail build, so I had to beat her with an non-optimal build, which took me way longer than it should have...
Me too :) My strategy for that fight is to just never jump. The extra dash distance is perfect for getting past him and his attacks are more dangerous in the air so it works perfectly.
Sharp Shadow is an essential part of my play style, once I acquire it, it never leaves. Honestly, I have a habit, especially against bosses, of dodging attacks by dashing through whatever enemy I'm fighting. Of course my play style, is a weird mix of knowing I'm going to get hit, so Grubsong and Thorns are always there, Soul Catcher because that extra soul is usually the difference between life and death for me, Weaversong and Grimchild, because half the time during boss fights I'm too busy dodging to actually focus on hitting my opponent, and the last slot usually rotates between, Defenders Crest, Dream Wielder, and Nail Master's Glory.
Same. Anything that increases my mobility is a survival requirement for a successful run. Plus the "down shadow dash" with the dash and sprint equipped is an attack I like to incorporate.
"Just for the bragging rights"? Come on, Shape of Unn makes the Knight even cuter, especially with Baldur's Shell equipped. No seriously, when you use both at the same time you get a small snail shell when using Focus. I mean not great for combat, but if that's not cute I honestly don't know what to say.
My play style, is a weird mix of knowing I'm going to get hit, so Grubsong and Thorns are always there, Soul Catcher because that extra soul is usually the difference between life and death for me, Weaversong and Grimchild, because half the time during boss fights I'm too busy dodging to actually focus on hitting my opponent, Sharp shadow because I have a tendency to doge through enemies and bosses more often than not so I might as well get some extra damage, and the last slot usually rotates between, Defenders Crest, Dream Wielder, and Nail Master's Glory, and possibly spore shroom for some reason, depending on what I think might be more useful. Bosses with adds usually mean spore shroom or defenders crest. Coliseum of Fools, or bosses where I think I might need the extra damage from nail arts, is when I use nail masters glory. And Dream wielder usually finds its way into my exploration/travel set. I know, it's a very generalist play style, but it works for me because I like to focus on survivability. Although I am partial to switching out Grimmchild and weaver song with Spell-twister and/or Shaman stone to make a more spell focussed build.
Baldur Shell is actually used for purpsefully blocking hits that are hard to avoid, and it's amazing at that. Imagine you're fighting NKG and he's going to do the uppercut but for some reason he takes a few steps backwards, leaving you in a position where you can't avoid the hit anymore. If you have Baldur Shell equipped, you can just press B and easily ward off the damage.
When i first got thorns of agony it was my favorite charm, and from the beginning of the game i still have it equipped. I know its not powerful but i just loved it from the start
That’s true. I used those two, unbreakable strength and thorns of agony (cause I only had one slot left and thought why not) to beat NKG. I’m a very defensive and careful player so it gave me a lot more openings to heal and think about what to do next
Shape of unn, Quick Focus and Deep focus literally makes you almost invincible. If a boss deals one mask you can almost beat it with your eyes closed. Trial of the Fool becomes a joke (except the part with no floor- swap deep focus to hiveblood and that bit becomes a joke too. Add on grubsong and you can almost always heal up to full in a few seconds, in any situation really. Panic heals are a lot less risky too- you have more that enough soul and you can correct it pretty quickly. It got me through all of godhome (including the pantheon of Hallownest) and takes away some of the luck from AbsRad, as if you get in a situation where attacks overlap and there is no real option to dodge, taking the two masks isn’t that big of a deal as with shape of unn you can heal at almost any point in the fight. Phase 4 can be a little tricky and bad luck can be very fucking annoying, but it’s still a lot easier to heal than normal. It makes the last 2 phases the hardest by far- you can’t heal so you’re basically doing it charmless. They’re short and doable though so it’s all good. Shape of unn is by far my favourite charm :)

I feel like you vastly underestimate my and others skill at the game in these videos, acting like whether to take damage is a choice. A lot of the charms you don't like are actually quite strong for worse players, lol. :p
Thanks for the bit about Baldur Shell. I'd been using it for about 40 hours of gameplay, basically exactly the way you described, as a crutch for panic-healing when I got nervous. This video convinced me to stop being a noob and actually learn how to time my healing properly.
Your input on dream shield was spot on! NOT ONCE did I ever use it! ...until absolute radiance and the extra hit it supplies went a long way. So yeah it’s decent I suppose haha
I don’t use wayward compass because I’m bad with directions. I use because I don’t feel like keeping track of my player. Like if I’m going into a boss fight I’ll gladly swap it out and plan my route ahead of time and keep track of it.
I will say Baldur Shell and Spores have been my combo so far for most of the game with Thorns of Agony. Not sure if that's a "noob build" or anything but it's been working
stalwart shell is good because the build of quick focus, deep focus, shape of unn, and stalwart shell allows you to only dodge while healing in most boss fights
Grubsong is frickin awesome, it gives you soul for every bit of damage you take, so you can heal more often, and it ONLY TAKES UP ONE CHARM NOTCH. How is that only “okay”?
Dreamshield is one of my favorite charms because I suck at dodging projectiles and I'm usually pretty bad at actually hitting enemies (particularly the ones that teleport or back away when you get too close). Dreamshield helps me out in those situations a lot. My normal build usually consists of Dreamshield, Mark of Pride and Quickslash.
Baldur shell is actually good. Think about this. Imagine that there was a two notch charm that basically made your heal always work, four times. That’s Baldur shell. If you get hit during healing, you don’t take damage because you were protected. You still use the soul, and you technically still healed, except that you took damage. In fact, you basically healed before you took damage, since you survive on one health. Along with that, you can use it in radiant fights or on anything that deals double damage as protection for only 33 soul.
A cute gimmick build for it is combining it with Thorns of Agony: if an enemy attacks the shell, the thorns will pop out to deal damage but you still get the protection of the shell. It's barely useful but a nice little change of pace.
I use Wayward Compass when I'm unfamiliar with an area, but when I am dying over and over in an area I end up learning it pretty well I'm getting between the bench and the arena, so eventually I swap that out and just throw on Quick Focus. May be my fault I keep getting my ass kicked, though - I am already in the Ancient Basin and I only have one extra mask, one extra charm notch, and one upgrade on my Nail. Currently getting my ass handed to me by the Broken Vessel.
Grubsong, Thorns of Agony and Sharp Shadow are my absolute favourites😂 i'm so reliant on these charms, i struggle to play without them Since ur running out of video ideas, how 'bout you rank your fave hollow knight characters / npc's
You used gathering swarm because you thought you needed the money. I use gathering swarm because I have OCD and can’t stand not collecting the geo. We are not the same.
Thorns is one of my favourites, because it is most useful when things are going tits up. I don't need charms to help with the 95% of the time things are going well. Especially paired with grub you can mostly ignore enemies relatively safely, as if you mess up the thorns will clean up for you and the grub will let you heal.
I’ll admit I didn’t like sharp shadow either at first but I realized that I tend to dodge a lot of bosses by dashing through them instead of more conventional means so I thought “why not?”
I am what one would call a "hyper aggressive coward" Not my usual build, but I use Baldur Shell and Dreamshield out of cowardice, but Thorns of Agony is equipped out of sheer spite and Grubsong is just there so I can face tank (and not get spooked) when I'm feeling bold.
nice touch that the part about the "5 second convo with your neighbour" had the flukemarm fight as the footage; Fight shouldn't take longer than 5 seconds
I relied on shape of unn + baldur shell a lot when I played the game. I had a very hard time figuring out where in the arena I could safely heal at any given moment, so I used shape of unn to give myself the opportunity to move if I was in the wrong spot, and baldur shell to save me a hit if I was too far off to move or if there was no right spot at all. I never actually noticed the difference in hitbox.

Already saw this 11 min into uploading. Thought the vid was great!
I refuse to use it after Radiant Markoth ruining it for me.
Henry Now I’m kinda glad the moths were wiped out lol
I mean, I can't use Twitter to save my ass. And I'm not even 20 yet.
Charms:
The Trilogy
I don’t use wayward compass because I’m bad with directions. I use because I don’t feel like keeping track of my player. Like if I’m going into a boss fight I’ll gladly swap it out and plan my route ahead of time and keep track of it.
The pain I feel when 6/10 of the charms are my favourites are on this list is too much.
I will say Baldur Shell and Spores have been my combo so far for most of the game with Thorns of Agony. Not sure if that's a "noob build" or anything but it's been working
I have a idea:
Top 10 best charms synergies
I find grubsong helps with long platforming sections because it means you can basically have a few more attempts if you mess up a lot.
"Okay, yeah Quick Slash and Mark of Pride is a pretty good duo."
*Shows Mark of Pride and Unbreakable Strength.*
haha yeah, thought I was the only one that noticed.
stalwart shell is good because the build of quick focus, deep focus, shape of unn, and stalwart shell allows you to only dodge while healing in most boss fights
This game is amazing -est
Grubsong is frickin awesome, it gives you soul for every bit of damage you take, so you can heal more often, and it ONLY TAKES UP ONE CHARM NOTCH. How is that only “okay”?
I use sharp shadow in my exploration build, and I'm used to the extra distance. Normal dash throws me off.
spinach actually tastes more like damp notebook paper. I know from experience.
I've had no reason to have the Twitter app and now I do
Attempt number 4, Rusty please review Dante's Inferno
Dreamshield is one of my favorite charms because I suck at dodging projectiles and I'm usually pretty bad at actually hitting enemies (particularly the ones that teleport or back away when you get too close). Dreamshield helps me out in those situations a lot. My normal build usually consists of Dreamshield, Mark of Pride and Quickslash.
Dream shield is superior, you dare oppose me, mortal?
@Hollow Storm I am completely and utterly confuzzled
Wayward compass is in every build I've had throughout the game because it brings me comfort to know I have one less thing to worry about
2:56 Actually, sloths mate incredibly quickly...
I have literally never used Baldur Shell
I was so excited when I first got it I thought it was gonna be so helpful but then after like 15 minutes I took it off and never used it again lol
A cute gimmick build for it is combining it with Thorns of Agony: if an enemy attacks the shell, the thorns will pop out to deal damage but you still get the protection of the shell. It's barely useful but a nice little change of pace.
“Poor man’s version of quick focus” clearly you’ve never put the two together against pure vessel when he does his focus explosion
A bunch if my favorites were on this list.
Oof.
when you laugh so hard and long that by the time youre done he makes another joke and you start laughing even harder
Me: Everywhere I go. I see you face *looks at twitter*
Context: I got banned
I'll die on the hill that Sharp Shadow and Shape of Unn are amazing Charms
What’s that? Rusty is dusty on ideas? Hmm... how about your top 10 favorite Hollow Knight characters?
I use Wayward Compass when I'm unfamiliar with an area, but when I am dying over and over in an area I end up learning it pretty well I'm getting between the bench and the arena, so eventually I swap that out and just throw on Quick Focus. May be my fault I keep getting my ass kicked, though - I am already in the Ancient Basin and I only have one extra mask, one extra charm notch, and one upgrade on my Nail. Currently getting my ass handed to me by the Broken Vessel.
3:00 actually, sloths fuck really quickly
Grubsong, Thorns of Agony and Sharp Shadow are my absolute favourites😂 i'm so reliant on these charms, i struggle to play without them
Since ur running out of video ideas, how 'bout you rank your fave hollow knight characters / npc's
You used gathering swarm because you thought you needed the money.
I use gathering swarm because I have OCD and can’t stand not collecting the geo.
We are not the same.
Just a quick reminder that God doesn't love you. He loves me.
You don’t need to. God reminds me every time he lets me wake up in the morning.
I know, God abandoned me long ago.
@@altagos9265 you're a true psycopath and childhood destroyer.
I could just imagine you doing "which charms should NOT be in the same charm slots"
If you're bored you could always rank some more Dark Souls Bosses.
Thorns is one of my favourites, because it is most useful when things are going tits up. I don't need charms to help with the 95% of the time things are going well. Especially paired with grub you can mostly ignore enemies relatively safely, as if you mess up the thorns will clean up for you and the grub will let you heal.
dam im fast
I’ll admit I didn’t like sharp shadow either at first but I realized that I tend to dodge a lot of bosses by dashing through them instead of more conventional means so I thought “why not?”
wayward compass bad, shaman stone good
Wayward compass is amazing because it tells you where you are so you don't get lost
@@solisruben296 The words of someone who hasn't memorized the map from 10+ playthroughs.
GoldStorm07 the words of someone who clearly hasn’t awakened to the game breaking godly powers of Wayard Compass
Sharp shadow for life
0:08 We already agree on something. Good start!
God I love your videos. They're so funny and I'm just heaving at the end of them
Like...dry heaving because you've already puked all the puke there is to puke?
Rusty's 10 zote encounters
Baldur Shell and thorns of agony: You expect to get hit
Grubbing:It fits everywhere
I am what one would call a "hyper aggressive coward" Not my usual build, but I use Baldur Shell and Dreamshield out of cowardice, but Thorns of Agony is equipped out of sheer spite and Grubsong is just there so I can face tank (and not get spooked) when I'm feeling bold.
nice touch that the part about the "5 second convo with your neighbour" had the flukemarm fight as the footage; Fight shouldn't take longer than 5 seconds
how dare you put wayward compass in here, it helped me beat zote the mighty
Thorns of Agony + Stalwart Shell + Quick Focus = “Why are you hitting yourself, why are you hitting yourself?”
That one guy who beat pantheon of Hallownest with wayward compass is crying in a corner right now. I hope you’re happy, Rusty.
