I started listening to the band during the Hagar era, but I prefer the Roth catalog. I like the heavier, hard rock songs of Van Halen like Mean Streets, I'm the One, etc. Not a big fan of songs like Dance the Night Away or When It's Love. That's not to say I dislike the songs with Sammy, just, they went more Pop/Soft Rock with Sam. Hagar gets a lot of the blame for it, but it was Ed's doing, wanting to play more keyboards and piano tracks. I'll also say I often prefer Sammy's solo work to his Van Halen catalog. Seen Van Halen 7 times...4 times with Sam, 3 times with Dave, plus seen Sam twice as a solo artist, including just a few weeks ago.
Van Haleniac here. When Roth and Van Halen parted ways, there was great sadness and forlorn expressions throughout the Van Halen sphere, until "Best of Both Worlds" was played and all was right again in the Kingdom....This was your best reaction. IMHO Forget the measured responses, this is Rock and Roll! If it gets you, go with it! lol. Live Your LIfe!
Fun ~with a positive message . And when 5150 arrived, I really liked the new direction. It retained the edginess...with a crisper sound!! Loved each VH era. So cool .
Sammy obviously gave a new feel to VH, but he also played guitar. Although not at Eddie's level, but the added rhythm provided an extra layer. Good reaction
5150, the debut Album with Sammy, deserves a deep dive. " Good Enough" the opening track was the track that said this is Sammy , and this is still, Van Halen!
The first band I saw in concert was Van Halen. I was 14 I believe and I'm 59 now. I idolized Roth back then and when he left the band I lost touch with Van Halen for a spell. After some time and hearing them on the radio with Sammy singing I grew to appreciate their new sound. Both served well during their tenure with Van Halen. Also from interviews I've seen with Sammy he comes across as a pretty chill performer and just an all round good guy you would love to hang out with. Roth I think is still one of the best frontmen during his time but I have to admit I couldn't take listening to him perform when he rejoined the band. Anyways, they both put out great music and I honestly now don't think one was better than the other. They were just different. We lost Eddie way too soon.
My first fully-attended concert, as well (Diver Down 1982)…previously it was Journey where I was outside the fence at my local fairgrounds with hundreds of other people, partying and listening…peeking through the fence every once in a while. Unforgettable first VH show, though! I’m 60.
With Roth the band was fairly one dimensional. Not a damn thing wrong with that. However with Sammy the band went places musically that they wouldn't have with Roth. Nothing wrong with that either. I saw the band about 2 weeks before the final split and honestly it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen.
I bought this album when it first came out, and I would listen to this every day. Became a huge fan and I would dig back in buy every older album so to me it was all Van Halen.
Eddie's Lamborghini had broken down, and he was at a shop called Claudio's getting it looked at. While he was there, as fate would have it, The owner was on the phone with Sammy (his car had broken down as well.. After the phone call, Claudio noticed that Eddie didn't look to happy so he asked him what was wrong. Eddie said that he was bummed because their singer (Dave) left the band.. Claudio said " I just got off the phone with Sammy, Call Sammy ". Eddie said "Give me his number man" and he called him right from Claudio's Shop.. Watch the video called "Van Halen Unleashed", it talks all about it...
Was fortunate to see Van Halen once, or Van Hagar, as I saw them with Sammy. Didn't have an opportunity to see them with "Diamond Dave" on vocals. No matter which vocalist you prefer, the talent can't be denied. EVH was an amazing guitar player and his brother, AVH, was a really good drummer. Hard to find too many bass players who are as good as Mike Anthony. You asked about favorite Van Halen song. Hard to pick just one, but I will go with "Finish What Ya Started" from the OU812 Album. Most of us responding here know this, but in case you don't, EVH did the guitar solo on "Beat It" from Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Gives you an idea of how easy it was for him to cross genres. RIP Eddie!!!
The instrumentation in VH during both the Roth and Hagar eras were stellar. Eddie’s guitar is always elite no matter what. And people forget how good a drummer Alex was - and with Michael Anthony’s bass, they gave VH tremendous groove. You FELT it. The big difference is of course is: 1. The vocals - Sammy was a better singer with a terrific range. Roth isn’t a great singer, but he was great for the “party” band feel that earlier VH had. It was a raw attitude. They also experimented with earlier technology more and had far more variety in their sound than Hagar’s VH. They were having spontaneous fun, and it felt that way. 2. They were more mature by this point and had Eddie’s new 5150 studio with upgraded everything. It all lent itself to a more polished sound with bigger production value (layered instruments, bigger chorus, structured compositions, Sammy’s more sophisticated vocals, etc.). It all added up to a more commercial sound with the same killer musicians. And it hit as MTV was PEAKING.
Through a mutual car mechanic that they both used. Eddie saw Sammy's Ferrari at the shop and asked whose it was and the mechanic gave Eddie Sammy's phone number. And the rest is rock and roll history!!!
Favorite band of all time. Check out the live without a net video for an up close, and in your face performance of this song and it will show you that there’s not much “extra stuff” added into their music, JUST THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!
Sammy Hagar’s most iconic song is I Can’t Drive 55. In 1974 the US Government passed a law that limited the maximum speed on the highway to 55 MPH. If you react to it you should watch the music video. It’s a fun song and fun video
Guys you've gotta do the live version of this from the Live Without A Net concert!!! This is awesome but you REALLY get some Sammy screaming vocals on the live version! Please, please, please do it too!!! Thanks for what you do, love you guys ❤. Definitely need to do Poundcake as well as SO many others 😊
Check out, "Dreams" "Humans Being" "When it's love" and so on. SO MANY GREAT songs with Sammy and VH. Sammy brought a little refinement, and more talent and more of their songs had a "love" theme to them.
Love Sammy. You should check out the band 'Montrose' 'Bad Motor Scooter', 'Space Station #5', 'Rock Candy' and 'Rock The Nation'. Hard hitting Rock from the 70's. Cheers.
Humans Being is a good one too, it was the last song Sammy did with Van Halen, Sammy and Eddie weren't even on speaking terms when that video was shot.
Hagar brought Van Halen's musicianship to another level and I love him for that. The classics are the classics but the Hagar era was great too. Next up for you: Dreams, Poundcake, Judgement Day, Right Now
Sammy as not only the best singer for VH he has one of the best voices in the history of rock. Check out his band Chickenfoot...It's Sammy, Michael Anthony from VH, Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joe Satriani Soap on a Rope Big Foot Oh Yeah Sexy Little Thing
Several great songs from the Sammy Hagar era.I hope ya'll check out or get requests for When It's Love" :Why Cant This Be Love""Pound cake"-The video to Pound cake Eddie uses a drill on his guitar
The Sammy era of Van Halen is definitely a little softer, a little more poppy. But, still kicks ass as well. However, if you guys are looking to see what some harder less poppy songs are like from Van Halen with Sammy, check these track out! Get Up, Good Enough, A.F.U., Big Fat Money, Sucker in a 3 Piece. Also check out: Summer Nights and 5150...they aren't quite as hard as the other songs I mentioned, but those are 2 of my absolute favorites!
Edward and Sammy bumped into each other at the excotic car repair shop. The rest is history. I like Dave and love Sammy. Waste of time comparing 2 of the best at what they do in their own way. I graduated HS in 85 so I was lucky to be drowning in VH from the get go. Their Rock-N-Roll is timeless.
Ok now please check out the live version of this tune and the song “5150” from the same concert as the “Eruption” solo. Love you guys! Long live the King, EVH
I consider them to be almost 2 separate bands. I think they were more fun with David Lee Roth, but they were more technically accomplished with Sammy Hager. Interesting thing about Sammy is that he’s actually an extremely talented guitar player, but he ended up very rarely playing on anybody’s own solo songs with Van Halen because he felt like there was no place in the band for a guitar player other than Eddie.
You must do there's only one way to rock live in Japan. Incredible guitar duel between Sammy and Eddie. Also if you do Dreams, you have to do the original blue angles version
Van Halen never had a #1 Album until Sammy Hagar. .....and to your Quiz....Sammy Had Met Eddie several times before the Auto mechanic ......The auto Mechanic told Eddie it was Sammy's Car and Eddie asked for his Phone Number and he called Sammy...Sammy went out to 5150 and they Jammed several songs....and wrote the 5150 Album in 10 Days and it went to #1 on the charts.....rest is history....
David Lee Roth was the Ultimate Van Halen singer!! A lot of people took sides when he left the band. I stayed with Van Halen because of Alex and Eddie. This Album was proof of their great connection with Sammy!! I recommend the live version of “ There’s only one way to Rock”!! Eddie and Sammy really show their guitar skills together!! You guys ROCK!!
@@tomarriola4952 Do better? Be honest? Maybe read my comment over again. Even tho I said Roth was Van Halen’s “ Ultimate” singer, I also STATED there was no denying the connection Sammy had with the band. Implying I felt the same about them both! And my comment was really about EDDIE, and ALEX! Meaning whomever was singing did not matter to me, as long as Eddie was playing along with Alex. And one last thing, MY OPINION is just that MINE! So don’t ever tell me to “ Do better”, or “Be honest”. If you have an opinion about a reaction, or a song, speak up. But DO BETTER in respecting others “ Opinions”.
Another footnote.....Before Sammy signed with a new label....He had to do one more album. Eddie Van Halen (lead guitar), played bass on Sammy's self-entitled last album for his label.
Never really followed Van Halen after this album but nostalgic journey for me to hear this after a number of decades. Used to listen to this album on old cassette walkman on way to my first job in 1986 from memory, and this brings me right back into the feel of that time. It is crazy how some music just transports you right back to the feel of a certain time or year in life. Van Halen was never on my radar after that time. So I do not actually really know much about the albums with Sammy Hagar apart from this one.
LOVE the reaction!! :) ♥ Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
The Van Halen - Sammy Hagar Era! The Very Best!! Y’all must discover the greatness of their blend. Roth was about Roth. Sammy was about the Band and the music.
Sammy and Michael Anthony doing a tribute tour, had to get Satrania not spelled ,anyway Joe and Drummer is Led Zeppelin s Drummer s Son.they where on Howard Stern🎉 JOE Was Killing xome of Ed's hardest riffs Sammy is in his 70s and tours every Summer
This sounds like a redone studio version, for some reason….but there are some really great live versions to watch… where they do the 5150 walk, etc….. and are obviously having a really great time!
Diamond Dave once said it best - "All Sammy's songs are about love. I ain't talkin' 'bout love." I feel DLR VH is a keg party at a frat house. Van Hagar is wine coolers on the beach. Both fun but different.
50+ years ago, Sammy Hagar was the lead singer of Montrose, which was founded in my home area the San Francisco Bay Area 🌉. Montrose splintered into 3 successful entities. Listed according to departure. 1 Samny Hagar, lead vocals and rhythm guitar 2 Denny Carmassi, like me born in San Francisco, drums 🥁, joined Heart ❤ 3 Alan Fitzgerald, like me born in San Francisco, bass guitar and keyboards 🎹, a founder of Night Ranger. Sammy Hagar wrote and performed I've Done Everything for You. It bombed 💣 . In 1981, Rick Springfield covered it, and it rose 🌹 in the Billboard charts! 🤯 Sammy Hagar has more details in interviews and in cincert videos of the song. Biggest debate in high school 🏫: Van Hagar or Sam Halen? Biggest hit as a solo singer for Sammy Hagar is based on getting a ticket 🎟 for speeding. 🐆 Suggested video 📹: 1 Sammy Hagar sings I Can't Drive Fifty-five. 2 Sammy Hagar sings Sam I Am.
Love the tune. Great reaction. If you really want to see Sammy hit the goods. Check out the extended live version on this song from Live Without a Net. Micheal Anthony kicks it on the backing vocals as well.
This is a great intro to the Sammy era. The whole 5150 album has a very upbeat, positive vibe to it, also-- keep digging! I think you'll find some real surprises. Edit: To answer your question about the composition-- This album really represents a significant increase in Eddie exercising his creative freedom. Everything was recorded and produced at his home studio, "5150", and they even opted to produce it without their long-time producer Ted Templeman. As a result, at least to my ear, you get a more raw cut into the band. All the keyboards/synths you hear are Eddie as well, including what I think is a simple, subtle string type pad during the 2nd verse in Best of Both Worlds, just to fill out the sound and make it a little different from the first time through. Love this album, and listened to it hundreds of times front to back during my lifetime. Wore out 2 copies on cassette, and I've been through a couple CDs as well. It just gets played a lot.
I love Van Hagar, and I'm not ashamed to say it.
I prefer it a million times more.

Anything with Al and Ed....but the DLR era is way heavier and hard edge....Sammy era was too bubblegum.....Poor Ed.....
It's a shame that humans feel the pressure to pick either or.
Van Hagar is awesome.
Van Halen is incredible.
Can we all agree on that?
Sammy is 76, still touring and still sounding good.
Sammy's 76 and still going strong! Getting ready to go on tour again. Sammy was also in a band called Montrose. Love Sammy's vocals.
I think Michael Anthony, the bass player, had the defining Van Halen vocals. That’s why it worked so well with Sammy.
love both versions, Diamond Dave was an ultimate front man, while Hagar is great songwriter and vocalist.

Sammy is also a damn good lead guitar player in his own right, but when you're in a band with Eddie, yeah no.
Listen to There's Only One Way To Rock by Van Halen.
Sammy is amazing, love his solo stuff more.

Agreed, saw em with DLR at MSG and SH in Hartford. I just prefer the hardness of early VH
Montrose ! Before Van Halen was a thing.
Live version from 1986 captures the energy of the song. And if it’s the long version, it has a great intro.
Dreams is one of the best Hagar era songs. Amazing vocals
Love all Van Halen. Sammy sounded just as good live. Better than the recordings. Amazing singer. Miss you Eddie.

Sammy Hagar wrote and performed I've Done Everything for You. It bombed 💣 . In 1981,
Rick Springfield covered it, and it rose 🌹 in the Billboard charts!
Suggested video 📹: 1 Sammy Hagar sings I Can't Drive Fifty-five. 2 Sammy Hagar sings Sam I Am.
PRETTY GOOD SONG
you should check out Black and Blue or Amsterdam live , There's a reason they are called The Mighty Van Halen !!!
Sammy can also hold his own on a guitar !
They met via there car mechanic. The mechanic told Sammy the Van Halen was looking for a new lead singer so he gave Sammy Eddie’s number
Their # 1 album for them all
TRUST me. They have a lot of fire songs with Hagar. Try “ Human Beings “. It was for the movie Twister. It ROCKS 🔥🔥
Amsterdam, Up for Breakfast
That voice! 🙌
Dave had his day and had many great songs with VH but Sammy was just as good in his own way and his voice has stayed sounding good to this day
You have to check out Sammy's "I Can't Drive 55"!
You should watch the live version of Best of Both Worlds!
Love the tune. Great reaction. If you really want to see Sammy hit the goods. Check out the extended live version on this song from Live Without a Net. Micheal Anthony kicks it on the backing vocals as well.
Samantha in the front row of a Van Hagar show. Yup! ❤😂
