I love that statement by Dr Ovadia. "You're never as good after the surgery as you would have been if you didn't need the surgery in the first place ."
Dr. Cywes knows the answers yet still asks the right questions for our benefit. Well done doc!
He's the best!❤
Yes he is!
Two great doctors I follow for 2 years who helped me beat my diabetes, hypertension, obesity (lost 40 kg in less than a year) after I suffered heart attack in 2022.
Did a CT Angiogram in China. Was $150, appointment the next day with no hurdles. Lowest radiation machines on the market. Beats the piss out of healthcare in the US, where my cardiologist and insurance company have required me to perform numerous screening exams that cost $000’s and require many trips to the office.
My family doctor always ordered a CAC store and has an ultrasound person right in his office. I know I’m lucky to have a top functional doctor here in Los Angeles since 2005 that way ahead of the curve.
I am living proof (thank God) of the risks associated with heart cath Dr Ovadia spoke of. Back in 2018, after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, my cardiaologist ordered a cath. A day and a half after the cath, I suffered a stroke. Being in a rural area, I was taken to Denver on an air ambulance. Thanks to the care there, I walked out of that hospital 4 days later with little lingering effects. Everything cleared up in a week. The risks are real.
Perfect point. You are a bariatric surgeon and had to study metabolism to understand what caused people to guet fat. Dr. Ovadia is a heart surgeon and had to study metabolism to understand hart desiese. An I’m a Psychiatrist and i am studying metabolism to understand some psychiatric disorders causes.
And now we all know that over consumption of sugar triggers all these modern diseases. I am just a layman though.
Ian a mental health professional. I have been incorporating this in my practice.
Hope you'll share your findings in psychiatry.
Modern diseases weren't an issue before world wide shipping, freezers, and end of seasonal eating. Go figure. @@powerguiller I mean except for the Egyptians that loved their bread and honey and have a lot of plaque in their arteries.
@@powerguillerI've worked in the cane fields in Florida, (Mechanical equipment) truly a remarkable industry, the U.S. government subsidizes sugar production for whatever reason. They own magnificently expensive tractors, $100,000 pickup trucks. If they would convert their fields to hemp production everyone would benefit in ways we simply cannot comprehend. Fuel, building materials, protein, CBD etc.
Dr Ovadia is becoming one of ny favorite persons on the planet! He is generous with his knowledge above and beyond!❤
Thank you for your kind words!
Agreed💥
I have heard others indicate (Dr. Ford Brewer, for one) that calcium is the indication of a stable plaque, that the most dangerous plaques are the soft ones that haven't calcified yet, and that because of this a CAC score can increase due to plaque stabilization. Would love to hear these doctors address that, specifically.
Exactly, I was wondering about this as well!
It is well established that what you have described is correct. Most people that have calcification will still have some soft plaques. It is common for the CAC score to subsequently increase after treatment begins, which is generally a good thing. Some people have then been able to reduce their CAC scores and attempting that should be after calcification has increased together with that stabilisation. Treatment can include diet, lifestyle, supplements and/or medications.
Me too!!!
I also know that the calcified plaque can crack and release or cause a clot.
@@wellinever1558 That may be, but I don't think calcium is the cause of the rupture. But plaques can be re-inflamed and rupture, just like re-inflaming a old acne scar.
Thank you for this explanation. The vessel damage description presented by Dr. Ovadia beginning at 14:25 was especially informative. I have been watching both of you for a few years now and this is the most well-rounded and all-encompassing presentation I have seen on this topic. Thanks again and glad you teamed up for this.
♥️♥️♥️
I’m reading Gary Taubes book too.. “Rethinking Diabetes “. It’s a must read…
Brilliant talk from two great and forward thinking doctors. Really excellent 👍
I wish there were more doctors like these 2 doctors.
Dr. Cywes asked Dr. Ovadia about supplements like NAC, etc., to reverse plaque. There were interruptions and it didn't get answered. Perhaps Dr. Cywes can address this in another video?
Look at linus pauling therapy for plaque reversal. Also, enzymes like , nattokinase, serrapeptase, and lumbrokinase
@@northernyeti3489, exactly. Several studies out there showing nattokinaise around 11,000 mg a day can actually reverse plaque
@@northernyeti3489yes yes yes Nattokinase I just wrote the Doctor and asked why he don't talk about that He needs to address this?
What a couple of absolutely brilliant men!!
This is one of the best interviews on CVD I’ve seen to date. Fabulous information! Thank-you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dr. Cywes does an outstanding job of interviewing Dr. Ovidia. He asks the right clarifying questions every time, so tricky technical stuff can be broken down such that everyone can understand.
Greetings and thanks so very much for referring me to Sheryl Fox. I feel almost like I had spoken with you! Sheryl is so knowledgeable, compassionate and positive. Best regards, B.
Yes! Get this information to more doctors please!
We, Bruce and I are blessed to know of both Of you Dr’s Cywes and Ovadia and your great works! 😇🙏❤️
So great to have a video with two of the most brilliant surgeons..I need to watch this again.. it’s so helpful to understand how to prevent heart disease..
Thanks to doctors such as these wonderful humans who decided to dig deeper into the details and figure out why patients are dying of heart disease ( still #1 killer). Not many doctors are open minded enough to see that prevention is the key to keeping patients off the operating table and treat heart disease. Most are stuck in old ways of thinking. Bravo to these docs who are saving lives with these RUclips videos.
Well said. There are many Doctors. These are different. 💎
♥️♥️♥️
What a great conversation, thank you.
Dr Cywes, your mic is giving you a terrible sound and echo and makes it hard to understand a lot of what you are saying
On the other hand, Dr Ovadia's mic is 100% understandable and clear
Something needs fixing !
Thanks to both of you
I agree!!!!
Sorry. Will improve thanks
Espectacular!!!! Congratulations for both of you! Wonderful and profound insights!
Outstanding! So much ground covered, with wonderful clarity.
I love Dr Phil Ovadia’s book…
As a diabetic patient with a coronary stent in my LAD, I consider this video to be a "landmark" presentation for patient education. You gentlemen have done more to educate us "high risk" patients than any cardiologist could do in 100 office visits. Your explanation of atherosclerosis and the associated diagnostic options are not only comprehensive but understandable for the lay person. Please continue your outstanding work in the world of cardiometabolic health!
So true. This was dynamite and thats why the selfless drs and people who do podcasts must realise how helpful this os to a wide audience and causes us to heal ourselves. You cannot get this from a visit.
😊
You can's see soft plaque in a CAAC test
Another great video. I thought this was a great format.
This is awesome. Finally, a big picture over view.
I'm 6 month carnivore. I was in an ICU ward because of status epelepticus. It took about 3 days or more for a neurologist to wake me up. During that time I had a heart attack. My body was over using energy while unconscious and my body was temporarily paralyzed probably because of how the over use of energy being used. I was told I'm lucky to be alive and that while still unconscious at the start the neurologist said if I will ever get to wake up my brain would be in a state of a vegetable. Would it definitely be the status epelepticus that caused the heart attack not the LDL? I was prescribed a statin but refused to take it. Because my triglycerides are low I'm happy with the result but they want me on statins. They can throw their statins in the rubbish bin!
You Doctors and your contribution to health care is to be commended.Thank you.
Thank you, both! Awesome, educational discussion!
Great interview! Thank you ❤
Another excellent discussion.. Thanks to the both of you...
Super interesting conversation. Thank you for sharing with Joe Public
Great content. Finally I have heard a good explanation for getting a CAC score done. It isn't to be done just once. Now I understand the reasoning.
Thank you.
Thank you to both doctors for this discussion.
Great information. Yes more videos. Thanks Dr
Great video, great information.
Thank you. Thank you. This was such a great video. The explanation was clear and so much information.
Great video.. a must see.. I sent it to my family and friends… thank you..
I have a high CAC score, which I strongly suspect is from almost 15 years of taking a statin while eating the SAD.
Sadly, yes.
That is my scenario also! I also have a very high LP(a)
Thank you for a powerful and informative hour! Thanks again
Excellent and informative discussion. Thank You to you, Drs Cywes and Ovadia.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dr. Cywes keeps interrupting Dr. Ovadia. Doesn’t let him finish answering the questions!
Great Q&A,!!!
Thank you gentlemen.
I fix hearts. It reminds me of the 1950s song.
I'm your handyman.. I fix your heart. I know I really can.
We need a part two. Thank you.
I guess most Doctors do not watch RUclips? Or read books like Phil's? Great talk from gentlemen with hands on. The "system" is our biggest threat!
Wow. Timing is everything. I am scheduled for an angiogram stress test tomorrow for ongoing chest pain. CAC 3 yrs ago was 82. Wondering what tomorrow will bring. Did not know of the CTA test. I am working on the diet side already. Hoping all comes out well.
Great, informative video
Thanks for this valuable information
My heroes ❤❤❤
Such an interesting conversation I’ve learnt so much. Thank you guys 🙏🫶👍
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
A very well said Dr. ovadia 👌👌
Fantastic talk ❤ 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Here a 52 postmenopausal years old with family history of heart disease and despite the risks in the UK i still couldn't get a doctor's referral for a CAC test. I was told unless i have history of ❤ attacks. I was in Argentina and wanted to get it privately didnt find a place to maje it and consulted privately exclusively for the "doctor's written order", I was told i could not just go and have that dine yet, never done it.
You can get it done in Ireland with a G.P. referal. Costs about €200
Please stop interrupting your guest every time he says something. It got to the point where I was just about to switch off. It’s so annoying
My CAC was 879 last September. I was almost 4 years carnivore at that time. I was 61 years old. I did not get my a1c until after being carnivore for over a year and it was less than 5. No idea how bad it was before I went carnivore....Doc never mentioned it. One thing that frustrates me is that all the carnivore influencers seem to say...my CAC is zero...and they they never discuss those of us who have a high CAC score.
Yeah I'm 65 and mine was 380. Now on high dose statins
8:26 I want to challenge that point. I just had a triple bypass due to 99, 80 & 80 blockages. I have very good insulin sensitivity-passing 3 glucose challenge tests in my 40s even. I weigh 125 lbs and low BP under 110. My own hypothesis is that I could over eat sugar & did so. I also notice that my all my lipid markers worsened after 2 mRNA shots - the factor which must not be named.
I guess everyone is different. I’ve had every c19 vac and everything is great for me.
The frequent interruptions of Dr. Ovadia is so distressing.
I agree. Dr C gets a great guest on his podcast but interrupts them repeatedly, thus impacting the quality of the info provided. It is so annoying, especially as his interruptions are often an unimportant tangent. 👎
@@jt8142 he does it every single time, he definitely loves the sound of his own voice and thinks its more important for us to listen to him than his guests. I cant even get through a full video of his without getting pissed off at him
It is the only way you get clarity.
@@wellinever1558It's not. You let a guest speak. Then ask questions afterwards. It's not rocket science. 😊
When doctors discuss amoung ourselves there is frequently a lot of interruption. This is common. You are seeing two docs talk not a journalist interview a doctor. Robert did that to me in our interviews. No insult meant or taken. The audience is a fly on the wall at a hospital Journal Club.
My belief was that if you put two cac scans side by side a year or 2 apart the main aim is to not have any new plaques formed, in most instances the plaques will increase no matter how good your diet is.
Ford brewer sees plaque increasing and many others who look at all these scans regularly.
Arthur Agaston also says not creating new plaques in different areas is the goal.
thank you for sharing your knowledge, going thru coronary artery problems now, heart cath done, need to make some big decisions ....
Thank you 🙏
Thank you both invaluable info.from jill❤
I’ve been researching grounding as an anticoagulant. Some recently found about Covid and blood clots looks promising. It works for anti inflammatory and anti oxidants too.
Research Lumbrokinase. Reduces fibrin-the clotting factor. Get your Fibrinogen checked. It’s the clot-making protein in your blood. You can do it online yourself.
Do you mean by grounding, standing outside in bare feet?
@@catherineboland8736 yes! I use a wire that’s attached to the ground and then I can be grounded while sleeping. Totally passive and it seems to align the circadian rhythm somehow to sleep better. Google it!
Nattokinase knows plaque as well.
Does natto taste really nasty? I've seen some videos of people trying it for the first time and some people were vomiting because they said it was the most disgusting thing they've ever eaten.
It's an acquired taste. Taste better when mixed with Dijon Mustard
Yes I'm pushing him to talk about this why has he not ddressed the supplement?
LOVE YOU GUYS
I thought you were interviewing Guga of Guga Foods as I was looking at the video thumbnail. This guest makes decidedly more sense. Although I'd watch you interview Guga!
I wish Guga would see Dr. C or Dr. O ...
This says a ton about how backasswards our medical system has become. I discovered my high CAC score by going out on my own to get it done, no physician recommendation because I am metabolically healthy, not overweight at all, and have always been quite active with hard physical labor for work. Anyway, so I wanted to find out more after getting the CAC, but the ONLY thing the Dr. advised was the statin and baby aspirin. So I said no to the statin and because of that the Dr. WILL NOT TEST FURTHER. Well, I was kinda shocked. It’s like, take a statin or simply be left wondering if i have soft plaque that might cause a problem. It’s crazy that I’m TRYING to help myself before I have a heart attack and the so called cardiologist experts I’ve seen instantly just go to the pharmacy. I guess I’ll try to get a CTA exam on my own too. Very frustrating and scary when I can’t even rely on the Dr. to initiate any further testing 😢 TAKE A STATIN OR HIT THE ROAD-LUDICROUS!!!
Ive eaten pretty well for 10 yrs - low carb, lean body etc, age 56, always had good markers (low A1C, low fasting insulin, low hscrp etc) other than high ldl, and did a CAC for peace of mind. Scored 703. Has knocked me psychologically tbh. Just going to be more hardcore re processed foods etc, and come to terms with the fact we all die eventually, some earlier than others.
Low carb could mean anything. Something like atkins is not healthy
@@2wheelsarefun73well it generally means a diet low in carbohydrates. For me, meat, fish, poultry, moderate butter and cheese, some veg, but no potatoes, rice, grains or added sugar. But I do socialise and cheat occasionally. My point being, I was hoping for a lower score, and psychologically it's been tougher than I thought it'd be.
Yes it can be scary. An important point made in this video is not the CAC score at a point in time, but its progression over time. For all you know you have stable calcified plaque from many years ago, or you could even have reduced it. The only way to know if you need to worry is to have another CAC score done 1-2 years after the first. My CAC is 420 and I am pushing for a repeat to find out exactly this
Im getting ready to do one. I guess I'll prepare myself emotionally for an undesirable #. I'm basically doing this to prove to my doctor that I don't need a statin for my LDL which is 157. Also been low carb for a year now. Diabetes controlled at A1C of 6.
Is your vitamin d level low?
thank you
I'm having a Stent procedure at the end of this month for an 85% blockage of my Left sub clavicle artery. Has taken me by total surprise.
Yeh..I bet
Excellent interview. The only think I would suggest is that you use a different microphone. Dr ovadia is so much easier to hear than you.
Thankyou Dr Phil and Dr Cywes for a great blog. I noticed Dr Phil mentioned Vit D2. I started taking that a while ago because I take Vit D.
Actually Vit D3 with K2 is optimal for absorption.
Vitamin K2
Lots of (low carb) food for thought!
Dr.Cywes... Interrupt less please. Otherwise, great interview
Great podcast. there is too much echo from Dr.Cywes.
Thanks, doctors!
I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the response on the use of NAC. An interruption and it was left unanswered. Arrggh.
So, since I have a CAC score of over 3800, I guess I should be dead. Using a ketogenic diet, I went from 416 pounds to 250, but I still have a cardiologist INSISTING I need heavy doses of statins. Not fun.
Great conversation. Thank you!

My father, all of his life, had what doctors say perfect LDL, HDL on the high side and triglycerides. He was never overweight, maintaining a weight from 17 yrs of age until his death in his 70s , with an ejection fraction of 61%.
But in his 40s , he experiences shortness of breath. It's a good thing he went straight to the ER.... he was about to have a deadly heart attack, four blockage all on the left side , 98 blockage in the widow maker. Requiring quadruple bypass.
My mother has what doctors say had very bad cholesterol, high triglycerides, fatty liver (no, never drank alcohol in her life), and diabetes. In her 70s, a blockage right side artery, requiring a stein
🤷♀️
I had a 1.6 CAC eight years before my recent CAC of 13. It sounds like the difference could be margin of variability (10%) in results. Or it could be that soft plaque calcified over the 6 years of low carb to ketovore lifestyle.
Love your content, but please get a good microphone ❤
My doctor has always ordered a CAC for and the ultrasound of the artery in my neck, which has always been an A+ and keeping blood pressure stable.
Great interview with Dr. Ovadia. The question that I have is where can I look to find a cardiologist who takes metabolic health into consideration and doesn't just push statins? I live in New Jersey, and all of the different cardiologists that I've learned about are not accessible to me due to distance. Is there any type of directory of "metabolic cardiologists" available?
There are a few listed on the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners website
@@David-hp9tr Thank you
would like Dr. Ovadia to be able to finish his sentences before being interrupted by Dr. Cywes!!!!!
I’ve had 2 CCTA’s with Contrast both 3 years apart. Both showed zero blockages. Following a low carb way of eating, my Total Chol is 221 and LDL 159. Triglycerides 37 and HDL 64. I recently had a HS-CRP and that was high, 5.52 or somewhere near there, and my TIBC is in the 900s! Should I be concerned?
Will test injections increase the coronary calcium or damage within the arteries .
So what do we eat to get rid of this or prevent it told i have 2 blockages ?
I have a calcium score of 175 & was put on a statin. I am going back a year later after reducing carbs & diet sugars for another CAC score test to look for improvement. Informative & insightful, I leant a lot! Low carb diet bring down insulin resistance & hence inflamation then reduce the plaque in arterial walls & hence calcification reduction.
Don't be surprised if your CAC score actually increases. You were doing damage for a very long time before you started making healthy changes. So there may be a lot of healing to be done in the was of plaque being calcified.
My CAC was 34 after one year of keto. I had high expectations when I did a followup CAC 4 years later but my score was 144.
Ok Sir you don't speak of Nattokinase supplement for cleaning arteries. Why is tjat?
What bloodwork would you recommend to look at insulin resistance and inflammation? My CAC was 600 5 mo's ago. I have an appt to see you Aug. 20th. I will get the blood work you recommend b4 our appt.
I know there are many ways to measure insulin resistance, HOMA-IR, ADIPO-IR, Triglyceride-glucose index, TG:HDL ratio, Kraft and Dynamic Insulin. What do Dr. Cywes and Dr. Ovidia recommend?
I went for a life line screening today. They said no issues but I will get the report by email in a few days. Now I want to do the CAC score.
I'm scheduled for July 22. Already had CAC last year, was 455😢.
@@brendahunter9134 Isn't that high. I never had one. I will have to wait until next year to get one. The Life line Screening is pretty good so I have heard. Are you a Carnivore?
I had a Lifeline screening last year but it focused on aneurysms not plaque. I'm not sure it measured what I thought I needed.
@@vbachman6742 Their is a doctor on you tube that swears by their screenings. Can't remember his name. They checked for flow in the carotid artery and legs and arms. The ultrasound on peripheral arteries can show blockages.
@@vbachman6742 life line screening uses ultrasound to check for perephial arterial plague. Same as when they check your heart for leaky valves during stress testing.
How about checking CIMT for soft plaque? Do you do that? Pros? Cons?
I'm desperate for Dr. Cywes, Dr. Ovadia or another like-minded doctor to talk about statins for people with significant CVD/plaque build up. I need to have a triple bypass. The damage has already been done. I desperately don't want to take the high dose statins. I want to go healthy, low carb diet and eliminate the inflammation. I don't know what to do.
They both consult privately. Call their offices for an appointment.
