I love this. I am an advanced aesthetician and I have melasma. You are spot on! I use obagi (nuderm right now) with .05 tretinoin. I will alter to alpha Arbutin every 3-4 months or so so that I cycle my hydroquinone.
Unfortunately I am sipping wine while I watch this video so.....sugar lol. 😬
    Great advice!!

Cody, I have been binge watching your videos all weekend and ran across this treasure. Thank you for caring and sharing your expertise. A couple years ago I had a fraxel laser treatment (several actually) with minimal results, not long ago I rang up my dermatologist wondering if there was any new information regarding the effectiveness of laser treatment on ethnic skin, she was very candid in sharing she had no options available to me. Unlike you, she doesn't seem to have knowledge in regards to skin care, but now that I have you to glean information from, I am more optimistic! Thanks again💝

Cody, thank you so much for your incredible honesty! I have struggled with Melasma for years, and have spent so much money at plastic surgeons' offices. The RN's there have NEVER been honest with me about Melasma. I have complained about the laser and IPL treatments not helping, and their solution is always more treatments! They did start me on Obagi and Retin A which I apply every morning, but I have been too lazy to use it in the pm too. I always wear a heavy layer of Obagi SPF 50 sunscreen. I am going to follow your advice . Would microneedling help my Melasma? Is it important to use the hydroquinone twice daily? Hugs to you!

I recently started layering 10% lactic acid, hydroqinone 4%, retin a, & vitamin Using this combination has led to melasma breaking down and fading. I use The Ordinary laçtic acid, & vitamin c x 2 nights a week. In addition, I have on rotation NIOD's RE: Pigment, TO niacinimide & zinc, alpha arbutin, resveratrol & ferulic acid & ascorbic tetraisopalmitate. I've been fighting melasma for 10 years & finally I'm seeing results. Thanks for your insight.

Ellajo B. Can you tell me more please? I have so much products and I’m really confused with all that stuff 🤪
I’m interested in your routine. I have started retin à .05 and hydroquinone 4% every other night for a month now.
I also use vitamine c, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, glycolic acid 10% (I want now to move to 15%)
I want to simplify a little bit though
      What do you think ?
      Please help!
I have melasma since 2009 from pregnancies. I also have large brown marks on my forearms
Thank you for your answer and enjoy your day !

Thank you, your information is very helpful. BTW, have you ever tried The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution? I know the AHA seems a little high, especially if using Retin A, but I know people that are using it while on Retin A and their skin looks amazing. I'm interested in your thoughts on using the Ordinary Peeling Solution I mentioned.

Thank you so much for this video. I didn’t know what melasma was. I went to the Derm awhile back and she Rx triamcinolone .1% cause I had a rash and dark spots on my chin. I feel that didn’t help. She thought it was from the spinner brush I was using, she told me to stop using it so I did. I washed a few yTube videos. Orally I’m taking b complex, omega3, d3, probiotics, zinc picolinate, and evening primrose. I also started taking bone broth with turmeric in my smoothies. I cut out all dairy products as well. For my face in AM I’m washing with Neutrogena ultra gentle cleanser then adding the hydro boost ( hyaluronic acid) following a moisturizer and spf. PM same steps except sunscreen I apply hydroquinone 2% . The days I don’t apply hyrdroquinone, I apply Marula and tamanu oil. Despite all this I still have a horrible irritation don’t know what’s causing it. So I’m thinking of taking differin which is a retinol .can I put on the retinol first let it dry and then put on the retinol on top of that ? Also once in a while I would use a salicylic acid 2% face wash and scrub. Should I stop it? One more thing someone recommended. DIM 100mg supplements with vitamin E along with it. Any thoughts on that or anything that I am currently taking or putting on my face? Any recommendations will help . Thanks and sorry for the long message .oh yesterday I put the juice of organic Irish potato , they say that suppose to help with dark spots

Hi again Cody. Before I begin I would like to start by telling you how much I appreciate your expertise on my issues. You're extremely kind to always take your(already hectic) schedule to answer all of our important ( to us) questions. That said. I was viewing another RUclips video yesterday. And a sub left a very disturbing comment regarding RetinA usage. She indicated that using too much can cause hair loss, kidney failure, joint pain, & a much higher mortality rate. I was shocked to hear this statement. People have been using RetinA for ever, no? Could you please touch on this disturbing statement???? Much appreciated, Cody. ❣️❣️❣️

Hi there, fist I want to say thank you for being so honest & sincere. You are not afraid of telling things as they are, even if some of your tips are somewhat controversial ( in the minds of the traditionalists hehe ) I sat and watched your vlog during my lunch break the other day & you really put things into perspective for me. I am going to start a journal as I have a few skeletons that need to be faced & your honesty gave me the courage to face them, so again thank you 💖💖
Now, I have a question regarding my Retin A experience. I have dry skin but since my new skin regemin I have found I now have an oily T Zone & have no idea why, I've not experienced the peeling/ redness but have definitely noticed an improvement in my face & like you, have experimented with different ways of applying the Retin A cream. I will be trying the tips you gave & will let you know how that works as they make sense.
    Bye for now
    Barb xx

Thanks for the tips! I have dealt with melasma since my early 40's and it got so bad at one point that I couldn't go bare-faced because it was so dark and dermablend wouldn't even cover all the way. I'm using alpha arbutin and a granactive retinoid 5% and have been able to fade my melasma spots down to where it can be covered by full coverage foundation and not show through and I can go barefaced without feeling self-conscious. :-)

You should try some of The Ordinary products. The best part of this line is that it is very inexpensive and not a huge investment if it doesn't produce the results you are looking for. Honestly, a lot of their products are under $10! I also use their 30% vitamin c and their azelaic acid and have noticed a big improvement in my skin texture and hyperpigmentation.

Hi Cody, thank you so much for the videos. They have been so helpful. I feel like you understand and I can watch your videos for help.
I have a question. I live in Nigeria and I started using RetinA just over 2 months ago. However I have noticed that the left side of my face peels less than the right side. It also looks brighter and is improving faster than the right.
The right seems gets irritated, dry and scaly quickly. The skin does shed quickly than the left side.
I also noticed the right side is taking a longer time to get brighter and softer Also, the dark areas aren’t lightening up as much as the left side.
Please help! How do I gets that balance and see the results on both sides.. Do I need to change the application for both sides.?
    P.S.
I have black skin. Although am not dark in complexion. Just medium tone complexion.
Thanks in anticipation of your response.

How long did TO products take to work for those here with melasma? I’m 5 weeks in using Alpha Arbutin and Azaleic Acid, Granactive 5% and 30% vitamin C as well. I think it’s faded a bit but really don’t want to waste all my time and effort if in these products if I’m ultimately going to need professional dermatologist services to effectively treat this. I’m 47 now and while I’ve had some mild discoloration in the past the past 9 months my skin has become islands of hypo and hyperpigmentation areas that look like islands of color on both cheeks and my lower neck and chest are darkened as well. Full coverage foundation will not cover this as it always had on any areas I had before and I’m really feeling desperate to start on the right path towards improvements with this.
I Microneedled x1 and stopped due to Wayne’s advice here! Glad I saw his warning. I’m also slathering on the sunscreens now too!!
Any success stories and how long it took and what exactly you used and how often would be greatly appreciated!!

Very informative, thank you. I'm using skinceuticals phloretin CF, Lytera 2.0 and a skinceuticals 0.5 retinol( I just started the retionol). Moisturizer and lots of sunblock. I've done hydroquinone, VI peels, and I did do a laser treatment which made it worse. It's been 2 years and my dermatologist wants to do a Enlighten peel, which is costly. I've spent enough already and not sure what to do at this point. Hoping this retinol will work.

My melasma is on my upper cheeks. Do you recommend using hydroquinone on just the melasma or entire face?

  • @angelalorenzo1
    @angelalorenzo1 6 лет назад +1

I've been using MSM cream and rose hip oil daily and noticed my dark patches starting to lighten/blend with the rest of my skin tone. I also do rice water rinse after cleansing my face. I'm going to try the IPL and if it does help remove some discoloration, Can I just continue to use the products that help lighten in the first place, to use as maintenance to keep them at bay? I've tried hydroquinone 6% and didn't use the whole tube because I noticed the spots we're turning kinda grayish and didn't look right, so I discontinued using hydroquinone. I've tried everything from microdermabrasions, microneedles, glycolic acid peels, creams, serums but nothing worked. So as a last resort, I'm going to try the laser...although I've been hesitant for many years. I just wanna see if this could help and maybe continue my regimen that does help keep them lighter. I do use mineral sunscreen religiously even on overcast days and try to steer clear from the sun. What's your take on this? Thank you in advance for responding to my inquiry.

I so appreciate the information and even more, the positive msg about being kind to yourself when you look in the mirror. I'm 53 and it's still hard for me to say, you're great just the way you are, when I look in the mirror. I am actively trying to improve the appearance of my skin, not bc I don't like the way I look, but bc I spent a little too much time in the sun as a young girl. Even though I stopped at 30, and I am told I look good "for my age" (fu), I have noticed my skin is dryer. I am now a moisturizer and sunscreen fanatic and just started using tretinoin. Fingers crossed I can get my skin texture a little healthier looking while aging like the freakin goddess that I am.

You hit it on the nail when you talked about frustration because that is what I feel DAILY/YEARLY. Over the counter products and prescription Licorce Root cream didn't work for me. I don't bother with coverage anymore because it makes it MORE noticeable and I'd rather treat this so I can wear a clear bare face again. Two or three times a month are the only times I leave my home whenever necessary due to the embarrassment. It touched me when you spoke of hope, energy and the healing process. I might give the product, Specific Beauty a try and the positive reviews has me feeling great. May you be blessed with continued success."

Using this regimen ur skin will clear up quick and so nice

Hi there luv your input on melasma. Now my question to you is, a person with melasma, can they do microdermabrabrasion, and if so how many times a week or by doing that will it worsen the melasma. And If you recommend someone to see a dermatologist for this condition. Appreciate a response thanks God bless.

CheeryGiggles Thank you so much for the love and support in the comment section. If it was me, I would use hydroquinone and Retin-a for one month before doing my TCA to get the best results. I don’t know of any companies on eBay because the company I use is a professional lab. I’ve heard of the brand called make up artist choice.

I have melasma for the last 2 years and I’m trying to treat combining all those ingredients with 4% hydroquinone, but I’m having a reaction from retinol, so far tretinoin and differin, I got small spots on my neck that looks like bruises, itchy and peels and then turns into brown spots that take months to fade. My skin color is type V. Do you have any advice? Thank you. I love your videos.

Hi there Cody! I have heard that Hydroquinone can sometimes exacerbate melanoma and depletes your natural melanin protection from the sun. I've seen some reviews on hydroquinone products of people that used it and their melanoma got worse. What do you think about the long term use of hydroquinone?

In Europe doctors don't give Retin A or pigmanorm during the summer. My skin is finally looking so much better! Even my fine lines are better. 😁 💜 Great tips and video!

Just stumbled upon your video. Great information. I'm currently on my second round of Tranexamic Acid and have had great results. My derm only recommends taking it for 60 days then a break of 90 days. But during those 60 days my Melasma fades to almost nothing. During the 90 days it slowly comes back and that's when I use the Hydroquinone and Retin A. That's a bummer but I live in Texas so there's no way to avoid heat and sun:(.
