I got tired and fired arrows to bokoblings, but killed a horse instead :( is so sad to watch them die... I killed the white horse once to see what happens and never tried that again
Great work as always! As a bit of extra info, if you have the Smash or Twilight Link amiibo, Epona is one of the best horses for speed. Although she's only a 4 speed, she has a longer gallop than any of the other horses normally found in game; 8 steps per gallop vs 5 for other horses.
Oxnard Darcy I actually have a tag that you can reprogram and as long as you have a .bin file for the amiibo you can ask it to rewrite the .bin so that it reads as a new amiibo! Man I wish I used the horses more, it was just too tempting to climb everywhere, I think having the ability to whistle summon the horse from the get go like with the ancient horse armor would really help them be more practical in the sequel, or have more areas plagued by rain but fit for horse traversal
@@Hovane5 I would be fine with the rain mechanic as it is currently as long as there's some way to combat it by a food buff or wearing a climber set or something.
@@antonsundin2974 Something people miss about the rain is there is a way to combat it. You just need to be good at climbing. You time when the slips happen and jump to cancel them. @@peterisawesomeplease you don't really cancel the "slip" since you still slip after the jump. You still make a small gain however as the slip isn't as long as the jump. Btw the sweet spot for jumping is 5 as Link slips after that

Agreed. This was super helpful as prior to this I thought the only 5* horses were the special ones. I also haven't seen any other horse stat videos (though I haven't been looking)
This is another great video! I really wanted a spotted pink horse, and got a 3/2/3 southeast of Hyrule Field. Solid-color horses may be faster, but spotted ones score five-stars for style.
YES, FINALLY SOMEONE WHO CALCULATES THE SPEED IN A USEFUL METRIC! Can you please do a motorcycle to fastest horse speed comparison?! Thank you for the awesome videos!! Edit: *resumes video and stumbles upon this exact request 2 seconds later* THANK YOU! I’VE BEEN WANTING TO KNOW THIS EXACT NUMBER FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS!!
I feel completely dumb that the Knight's Gear exists. I always used the mounted archery range to do the moon jump glitch and never once thought to, you know, actually PLAY the mini game...
How I generally keep my stables: 1) my first horse of that playthrough 2) the Giant Horse 3) the Royal Stallion 4) the best normal horse I can find (this one gets the ancient horse armor set) 5) Epona the Amiibo bonus.
These types of 'stat explaining' videos are amazing, it's interesting to know these things and now we can put these to good use when playing. Thanks a bunch
Another amazing video!! I still can't believe that out of so many legend of Zelda youtubers you're the only one who talks about these things with much more detail. I really love your videos and I hope you keep doing an outstanding work. Btw Daruk is best boy.
Great video man! Also, did you know there is a third special horse? The horse you'll usually see on promotional material for the game, is Links's horse. In game, that horse's stats are always the same. Additionally, if you never catch a horse during the game, when you fight Dark Beast Ganon the game will give you this horse. Pretty interesting stuff.
Seems like Botw is your first Zelda Game, bc that Horse is a reference/hommage to Oot, Majora's mask and Twilight princess, where it is your only, but very trusted steed and her name is Epona. If you catch her, (which I don't know how, but she can appear in the game, as the developers have put her in and alluded to her like an Easter egg, much like Ganon's giant horse, Zelda's white one and the lord of the mountain), even the Npcs at the Horse registry recognise her as a legendary horse/symbol and don't let you rename her, out of respect for the canon apparently. Edit. I forgot something, in Hyrule warriors which is a Dynasty warriors crossover, Link can ride and fight on Epona, which is considered it's own weapon class. She has even 3 level/ranks with the in game version Epona being the weakest, then comes Epona of Twilight and lastly Epona of Time (oot ofc). I can only hope that Botw 2 is gonna be better story/ dungeon/item/enemy-wise, but at the very least I could recongnise and feel good about all the love and detail the developers put in by making so many countless references to past games, though on the flip side, this means that hardly anything about Botw feels original, just updated, revamped and repackaged in a very unique, compact and exquisite manner.
knowcomment Nah, I’ve played Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, and you’re right, you can get Epona in Breath of the Wild, but through an Amibo. The horse I’m talking about is mostly brown, and is very different from the legendary Epona. You’ll see it all the time on the cover art for Breath of the Wild, and strangely I think it’s even in some of Link’s memories.
@@jamestheviking983 wait what? I'm pretty sure that horse on the cover is meant to be Epona, (either that or a random horse, like the standart american brown haired Hero arche-type) , but maybe that's just the Mandela effect screwing with my memory right now 🤔🤪🤯
knowcomment Here is a link with all the information I talked about. Pretty interesting how almost no one knows about this. This game is huge. www.google.com/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/6ci9y0/botw_links_default_horse/
@@jamestheviking983 WOW, well would you look at that, very interesting and intrigueing. Thanks for the info, it's nice that someone else can show me something worth of note to my favourite game franchise that I thought I knew inside and out (at least lore-wise, don't have the time and patience to lab/test out code and mechanics to a game developer/expert degree, but hey that what I watch this channel for). Little details like this seem to get lost on me, which could be due to me being so invested in the more grand and symbolic aspects of Loz (like the vast majority of plot relevant aspects being adapted/repurposed from the Bible, (old testament especially) that I've been spending a large part of my free time thinking up ideas/concepts for 2 Zelda games, which I might pitch to Nintendo on the future, or even just work with them if possible, who knows.
8:55 I think that one is known in the game files as Link’s horse, as it’s the one in memories and the all memories ending scene, and will be the default for Dark Beast Ganon if you have no horse. It always has 4/3/3 stats, I believe. Would probably explain why it takes a unique amount of soothes
Never really using the horses I've straight up never seen that twirly spear move...also can we please be allowed to keep special mounts. AT LEAST deer, let us role play ashitaka or thranduil, deer maybe my fav animal
@@KairuHakubi I don't. I've been a 2/5/3 user since 2017 and will continue to do so. If you time your presses correctly, you actually only need one spur and you'll stay at a constant galloping speed, only slowing down to a canter for less than a second. As Strength is very situational and near useless in most circumstances, I see Speed as the only stat that matters, and that is enough justification for me to take a 5 speed horse over a 4 speed, regardless of how small the increase is.
@@MattTheMan2708 strength is pretty important imo bc the health on the 4 speed is nearly double the one on the five speed. Also, i usually go into monster and guardian territory
This *definitely* deserves a supplemental video, covering: 1. How the horses that bokoblins ride are spawned 2. The stats of stalhorses and the Lord of the Mountain 3. The stats of non-horse mounts like deer and bears 4. The rumored attack buff from the giant horse
horses are one of my favorite parts of BOTW, despite the introduction of the motorcycle. This was my favorite video of yours so far! thanks for doing the numbers + research
Most people aren't still making botw content, and I don't usually watch botw content. But I just got into speed running and got back into the game. And to see my favorite RUclipsr still covering the topic is just a great felling. Thank you!
I've ridden horses IRL a lot, and the horse riding mechanics in this game feel just like riding them, which is an experience that I didn't know I needed a game to accurately depict.
Great. Thanks for making this. There's one minor error: the 5-speed horse actually comes with stats 2/5/3 (not 2/5/4). In addition, in my second playthrough, I notice something weird: When I got them paraglider, I immediately flied to the Kaobab region, trying to catch a 2/5/3 horse. But then when I caught a 3-spur horse at that region, it is surprisingly easy to tame. And then I go to the stable, it says that my horse is not 2/5/3 but instead 1/3/3 (probably the worse wild horse?). I originally thought this is a glitch or there’s a softlock which prevents us from getting the best normal horse immediately after the great plateau. But now from 7:42 figure, I know: it is possible at the Kaobab region to spawn a worse horse.
Yeah it's weird how they have 2 different groups in the same area lol. The speed thing was actually a typo on my end tho - I addressed it in the pinned comment. But Im glad you liked the video!! 😄
you absolute chad, thank u for making this video. i'd figured out a lot of horse stuff on my own but this still had stuff i didnt know, plus your other hidden stat vids. idk if there's more, but i'd love to see them if they are :)
I only chose hearts and no stamina upgrade when I played through BotW, thanks to that single stamina wheel, I became great at taming horses and climbing. I actually tamed the royal horse early, it was frustrating and difficult, but so satisfying when I succeeded.
As hard as it is to get the Knights Horse Armor it should give the Horse extra strength while it's wearing it. Like how the Ancient armor gives the Horse 2 extra spurs. My controller is a bit out of whack, and that game is hard for me. I can barely drop a pin on a shrine accurately.
I still remember catching my first 5 speed, 3 stamina horse in the Taobab Grasslands. It was early in the game, I was just aimlessly exploring when I spotted a horse with a very similar coloration to Epona, which was initially why I chose it to try and tame (not having the amiibo at the time.) It must have taken over an hour and multiple save reloads to mount that horse, tame it, and get to a stable, but I was determined. It ended up being a grand adventure; we ran into at least two Lynels and dozens of mounted Bokoblins along the way. But finally, just as night had fallen, I made it to the highland stable, and registered her as Epona. That felt great tbh. Another of my first horses was a pink spotted critter I rescued from its Bokoblin rider (after accidentally drowning the first horse I was trying to "save" from them) and riding it into the Gerudo canyon. I ended up selling it to that guy who'd lost his horse though, lol, as it had pretty low stamina. Speaking of which, if you've managed to read this far... well, I hope you enjoyed the stories of some rando in the comments section. The memories of this game I have are epic in my mind... same for anyone who's played it, really.
8:29 I have never encountered a 2/5/4 in a group 4. HylianAngel makes no mention of a group 4 2/5/4. Have you confirmed this yourself or did you possibly mean 2/5/3?
Love these detailed videos. I've been replaying it in master mode so I actually need to worry about survival and damage, and your videos have been a great way to understand the underlying systems.
Man, I have played this game for 300+ hours since BOTW came out and there are still things I had no idea about. Just goes to show how deep, detaled and great this game is!
YAS!!!! Got really excited there. New Stats of the Wild does that to me. Please do elixirs next! There are guides for cooking but not much for elixirs. I’m pretty sure there isn’t much to them but it’s a good chance to explain dragon parts to anyone who is confused by their properties at the very least.
Wow, this was really helpful! As with most things in this game, there's something the game hides from us. I've wondered for a while about horses, and I never knew they had set spawn points and stats. I was also really surprised to know you can tame the giant and royal horses in the early game, as in my last two playthroughs I spent a lot of time at stable cooking stamina food! Thanks so much! I'll definitely keep this information in mind in my next couple playthroughs!
Si. Epona no te tirará jamás.
Awesome video Croton! It’s amazing how accurate your data always is. I would love to see a video about weapons that have special buffs against certain enemy types! Ancient/Guardian weapons against Guardians, mining weapons against Taluses, etc. Like which weapons get what damage multiplier and such.
Waaat!! I was literally just creating exactly the same video. 😆😆 The only thing is, the 5 speed horse is faster than the bike (I have a race to show you), the bike is more like 4 speed horse, and there is some fun with different fuels for the bike. I will test what you said about the big horse cantering faster; I didn't notice that before. And it's also worth mention that the big horse is always attacking, while others must gallop to attack. So the big horse can take out an enemy camp by just running around in a circle, which is cool. I'll still post my video later though! Nice job, as usual. 😁😁👍👍
It all depends on how the spurs are used with the horse - which can manipulate its speed to be the slower or on par with the master cycle. The numbers I provided were cumulative averages of multiple different tests, as there can be slight variations on speed depending on the situation. Thank you though, I'm glad you liked the video!! I'll keep an eye out for yours!! 😄
You’re my favorite Zelda reference guide! I love your channel and I hope you can get over a million subs! EVERYONE should see these, even non-gamers lol!
Botw is a game that I personally played without knowing *tooo* much about the numbers and mechanics behind it, but in general, I like to be well-informed and know what's really going on in games and be (sort of) optimal. Played the game twice before I even started seeing videos about the internals of the game, and as always, it's very interesting, even if I'm not currently playing or planning on playing. I appreciate these videos, thanks for all your hard work!
Hello! Great video croton! Your one of the only channels that I have post notifications on! I’m thinking about starting a RUclips channel. Keep up the great work.
Hey Croton! Just figured something out! If you are on a horse at any speed you can briefly hold left stock backwards to go on the same speed but a bit slower. Pretty useful if you ask me.
Great vid, Croton! You're doing a solid for the people :-) I always go for the 5 speed since you can upgrade their stam with gear or food. Health usually isn't a problem unless you're planning on getting it shot at lol. Oh and just an aside, at 6:54 you pronounce "Bridle" as "briddle" but it should be "bry-dle." Thanks again for awesome info! You really should have more than 100K with this quality.
That is true about the 5 speeds!! The stamina with them is never really an issue to begin with, but with the ancient armor they truly become unmatched (and thank you for the clarification with the bridle 😅) But I'm really glad you liked the video!! Thank you so much 😊
5-Star Strength is a pretty good aspect for combat, you should try that playstyle too, it's really fun. Feels like a knight doing some work. The 3-Star Speed is useful in a combat situation, because it allows you to hit your target more than 1 time, and the turning is better.
I didn't know about petting right after a gallop, but if you whistle for the horse and mount it without the horse stopping, mount the horse and button mash it into an immediate canter (like I often do when escaping enemies), or it jumps over something, if you pet it right after any of these actions, it'll raise affection. I'm not sure how much though.
These videos are so good. I just got my best horse thanks to you and you credited HylianAngels. Your content always shows me something I wanted to know in BOTW but was too lazy to figure out lol.
For anyone wondering about how he had Epona, Epona is an Amiibo exclusive horse and she's only available via two Amiibo across BOTW and TOTK if you're playing BOTW first before TOTK she's available immediately after The Great Plateau and she's a really good horse to have because she has the same Strength and Speed stats as some of the horses on Upland Lindor in BOTW however her mane, tail, bridle, and saddle can't be changed
You can also increase affection by soothing after making the first forward movement upon boarding a horse, and also after a horse has jumped. If you aim for small rocks on the road, you can thus make the process faster. Also, if a horse startles, you will sometimes increase affection by soothing it, but I haven't managed to find any consistent pattern there
I actually first learned about the five star speed horses from a RUclipsr named Levelup Royal who did a lot of research shortly after the game's release. He timed the five star against the Master Cycle as well, although I believe he did it by time. Great video as always Croton! This is Shaun from the FB group btw :)
I wish there was an update that boost the maximum horse you can have registered, i really enjoy catchimg horse for dome reason and i want to collect one of each color variation with the best stats
For my "completed" save file, I keep the royal stallion, the giant horse, Epona, my first horse I ever caught, and then a dark brown horse with white hooves and white stripe that looks like the horse Link has in the memories and in official promo material. I named it Wildling :)
I've got a few gentle horses, including my first "starter" horse Arrowroot, but my first wild horse is Brego, a brown horse with a gold mane and blue eyes. I caught him just north of Kakariko. He's a flyer with 4 speed and 3 stamina... only 1 strength though, which is a pity. I definitely want to keep him alive. Still, he served me well so far. He helped me take down those Hinoxes for the "Three Giant Brothers" shrine quest!
Quick note - over a longer ride (like 1+ minutes) the gallop is not as fast as your numbers indicate, due to time it takes to refresh the spur icon. And traveling uphill is slower than traveling downhill. I remember testing this 4 years ago, and I found that while a gallop is about 25% faster, waiting for the spur to refresh reduces this to about 15% faster over the total duration of the ride. That is, a galloping horse still canters 40% of the time. The only exception is the Lord of the Mountain, who's spur icon refreshes instantly, so you can gallop him all the time. And I did my original test from Serenne Stable to Snowfield Stable, an uphill run, and it took 6% longer going uphill to Snowfield vs downhill to Serenne.
Thank you so much :D I was actually wondering about this after I found the 5 speed horse (in my opinion the best as you can do the infinite horse stamina glitch) I was wondering how much faster they were. Loving these hidden stat videos, keep up the good work!
Good video. I personally don't worry about horses much. I usually get the 2 special horses and one from the "Wild Horses" side quest. I also sell that horse to Zyle in "Good-Sized Horse." I never had 5 horses, and I see no reason for it.
Idk how many points and maybe I missed it or you mention it in another video but pulling back on the control stick to stop the horse mid gallop and soothing gives loads of points, and easy to repeat in a small area.
for taming/stamina, you can also just cook stamina meals before going so you can replenish your wheel mid effort. satori mountain is nearby and has plenty of mushrooms for it

Could we get the speed stats for non-horse mounts as well? Just for curiosity's sake.
Perhaps...🤔
I was planning on making a "Miscellaneous stats" video down the road, so I can definitely include it in there!!

Most people aren't still making botw content, and I don't usually watch botw content. But I just got into speed running and got back into the game. And to see my favorite RUclipsr still covering the topic is just a great felling. Thank you!
Thanks, now I finally know why the pink horses I find are always so bad even if they are all pink T__T it's not fair though!!!

Dude you are so good at clearly explaining things that players like myself are just now realizing years into this game. Great job!
Hmm this is an interesting video to be coming from the horse murderer

@@bluesandshrew1 The average live stream in the last few weeks has 1-2 horses die

I did miss that, so thanks for pointing it out!! Glad you lied the video though!! 😄
Nice horse names ya got there
Great Video!
Quick question though: Has Epona any special exceptions to any of these stats?
Epona is a 4/4/4.
Si. Epona no te tirará jamás.
Awesome video Croton! It’s amazing how accurate your data always is.

Was nice to see where Epona would compare into these, with the number explanations. Thanks for the video!
No problem!! Glad you enjoyed! :D

Thanks to this awesome video, I managed to get a 4/4/5 horse named Carmel. Thank you Croton :)
my god, someone who understands gaits...
Actually despite what the loading screen says, both gaits were a gallop. Canters are a different thing entirely.
Hey Croton! Just figured something out! If you are on a horse at any speed you can briefly hold left stock backwards to go on the same speed but a bit slower. Pretty useful if you ask me.
I can tell that this video took a long time and effort to make and it turned out great keep it up! :)
It did, but I was glad to do it!! Thank you 😄
The main difference between gentle and wild is the a wild horse will throw you off its back and gentle will not.
The stamina with them is never really an issue to begin with, but with the ancient armor they truly become unmatched (and thank you for the clarification with the bridle 😅)
But I'm really glad you liked the video!!
So glad I'm able to help you out then! Thank you 😄
the investment and preparation you put into the quality of your videos is god level. no brainer to sub.
Also, if a horse startles, you will sometimes increase affection by soothing it, but I haven't managed to find any consistent pattern there
Clearly an enormous amount of work went into making this video! Thank you Croton, that was fantastic! ☺️
No problem, I'm glad you liked it!! :)

For my "completed" save file, I keep the royal stallion, the giant horse, Epona, my first horse I ever caught, and then a dark brown horse with white hooves and white stripe that looks like the horse Link has in the memories and in official promo material. I named it Wildling :)
Croton your content is still my go to for all things botw. Thanks so much for your hard work and research.
What an awesome video your so under rated!!!! I subbed and liked btw!
Thank you so much :D I was actually wondering about this after I found the 5 speed horse (in my opinion the best as you can do the infinite horse stamina glitch) I was wondering how much faster they were. Loving these hidden stat videos, keep up the good work!
