  • Ray'z Arcade Chronology is a re-release of classic RayForce, RayStorm and RayCrisis; the trilogy of SHMUPs (shoot'em ups / shooters) that many have come to love. M2 developed these Taito games for modern consoles and this collection includes HD releases for RayStorm and RayCrisis. Why not RayForce? I have no idea. I review the Nintendo Switch version of Ray'z Arcade Chronology. The game is also available on the PlayStation 4 (PS4)

    If you cannot get the physical release of Ray’z Arcade Chronology in the US, you can get something similar. RayStorm X RayCrisis HD Collection is a similar collection for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Nintendo Switch that lacks the original game in the trilogy; RayForce.

    To explain RayCrisis’s weird map business, there are 42 potential maps you can end up on via an RNG kinda system (there is also a built in code to just have access to every map, when you inserted a credit but before beginning the game, press up, right, down, left, A, A, A, B, C, C, C, C in that order).

    It would be great to see switch versions of layer section(arcade game mode in options) vs rayforce arcade comparison. I’m Gna subscribe this video is well done and straight forward time skips

      I did that at 2:32 in this video. Did you want to see something longer?

      @@GenerationalGamer I don’t see any videos with that comparison. I like arcade version. I have one console style and the other version. I will get rayz Arcade will soon.

      I can make a designated video with the two games. They are similar.

    This collection looks interesting and innovative with the additional huds from Darius cozmic collection. But I rather play Raystorm HD due to the graphics and the exclusive ship.

      It's funny you mention that because I have something on the horizon to include that game.

    Have you done any more technical analysis of the emulation/port such as input latency, frame rate, frame pacing, etc?

    It's too bad both compilations didn't get Xbox One versions. I heard Microsoft pulled the plug on RetroArch for Retail mode Xbox Series X consoles, so that means I no longer get to play RayCrisis on my Series X unless an official Xbox One port gets announced. It's the only game of the Ray trilogy to not get released on an Xbox platform, as the other two appeared on the Xbox (via Taito Legends 2) and Xbox 360.

    • @GenerationalGamer
      @GenerationalGamer  Год назад +1

      My understand is that you can still use the developer mode on your Series X. @leveloneonline did a video just this morning where he discussed the "Retail" mode being disabled.

      Yeah, it's a shame in general, that a lot of games aren't released physical on XBox. I got Raiden 3 and 4 physical on Series X. I would also maybe get this on XBox.

      @@philbln I really think that the Microsoft will get out of the console business in the next generation. It would explain why they are making the moves that they have. generationalgamer.com/does-xbox-game-pass-hurt-sales/

    The reason Raycrisis levels look weird and "hacker-ey" is because in the game's story you're literally fighting inside cyberspace to try and put a stop to an AI.

    • @GenerationalGamer
      @GenerationalGamer  Год назад

      That makes sense. I don't pay much attention to game stories anymore, particularly shmups.

    • @EdmondDantes224
      @EdmondDantes224 Год назад

      @@GenerationalGamer The funny thing is shmups usually have better (or at least, conceptually more interesting) stories than most RPGs. A lot of times I'm playing them and wondering what's going on, while when I play an RPG I just want it to be over already.

    • @GenerationalGamer
      @GenerationalGamer  Год назад

      I agree with everything you said. Stories in games go on far too long, these days. I like concise stories that move the function of the game along. Back in the 8/16-bit days, the story could be skipped and the game would be just as enjoyable. I would usually watch the story once. Other than Ninja Gaiden, most games of the era didn't have anything more than "as the good guy, defeat the bad guy." I probably should pay attention to shmup stories. I'll give these three another shot and see if the stories are worthwhile.

    • @EdmondDantes224
      @EdmondDantes224 Год назад

      @@GenerationalGamer My favorite part of shmup storytelling is how much of it relies on the visuals--Like when you clear past the moon surface in Ray Force and see your fleet getting massacred, or how X-Multiply (which takes place inside a person's body) shows you exactly how the alien parasite you're fighting is messing with it. These small glimpses make me feel involved in a way hours of explanatory text just doesn't.
      RayForce is great especially because of how its a continuous journey to the center of this planet, never a break in the action.

    • @GenerationalGamer
      @GenerationalGamer  Год назад

      @@EdmondDantes224 I definitely prefer the first two games. I can't decide which one I like more.
