    I remember when I saw this video 3 years ago. Last week I bought a dirt bike again and went out for a small drive today looking for obtacles. I came upon a small steep hill of only about 2m height near a construction site and all I did was driving it up and down over-and-over. Despite it didn’t look difficult/extreme at all, I found it really satisfying and challenging. It remembered me to this video. Took me 30 minutes to find this video again after 3 years, but it was worth it watching it again :)

    You are mastering a part of dirt bike riding that has quickly become a lost art. But don't forget to grip it and rip it every once in a while.

      Robert Crane next step is riding slow a bit higher in the rev range.. Instead of putting in 2nd , try reving 1st out a bit more.. Its definitely harder, but will tech good throttle control, so when you NEED power to get out of trouble you will have it and know how to actually put it to the ground and not just whiskey flip your bike..

    In my opinion one of the best videos you’ve ever made. It gave me the same feeling I get when I ride with my dad. I love that you have shared your love of riding with your son. I can tell you he really appreciates it.
    My dad and I also ride motorcycles together. We ride street bikes. My bike is a BMW S1000R and his is a BMW S1000XR.
    As you said it’s a fantastic feeling to go out and ride with my dad and have every else in life fall away.

    Gosh, this brings back so many memories! I rode dirt bikes for over 40 years starting with small "trail bikes" and quickly moving to Ossa, Husky, Suzuki, Yamaha, and ended up on a KTM. It all started as just fun and play but escalated, within a few months, into enduros and scrambles. As my two sons got old enough (4-6 years old) they started riding with me, both becoming very good riders. The last 20+ years I rode was mostly racing with my sons and grandsons. One of the last enduros I rode just a few years ago, had me, my son, and his son starting on the same row at an enduro (in different classes, of course). I remember sitting there waiting for our starting minute to come up, and thinking "Now how cool is this?" I quite literally wouldn't take any amount of money for the quality time spent with my sons and grandsons on dirt bikes. It is priceless to me, and to them I believe. I now ride street bikes with them and enjoy it almost as much. hang in there and keep riding with your son. It is one of the very best ways to stay close, and as an added bonus, help keep them out of trouble. Best regards. Fossil

    Failures are only failures if we do not learn from them. The most successful people in the world tell us that failure is the foundation of success. Overcoming them, not giving up, and moving forward is what is important.

    Dirt bikes for some people including me is like going fishing for others. I spent a lot of time fishing before I figured out it wasn't the fish I was after. It's the same with dirt bikes! I do have 42 years of riding and racing dirt bikes and the one thing I notice with new riders and riders returning to the sport is they don't focus ahead, instead they look right in front of the fender. I'm sure Jack will always remember all these times riding together. My daughter has been riding and racing with me for 6 years now and have bond that is priceless. Stay safe my friend!

      Juan Rios no need to get heated, there’s always some friendly poking done in the two stroke community about power valve springs. Madjoker had no bad intention with his comment, and if it bugs you that someone would say something like he did, maybe you should go find a sport better catering to your attitude. I hear knitting can be quite calming to the nerves, I myself knit survival rope bundles when not holding my 300 on the pipe.

    When I was a kid in Australia, I set out a trials track in the local creek bed. I used to deduct a point for everytime my foot touched the ground. I never had a clean run, but it was one of the most fun things I did. The old descend the floating surface, wheelstand up over the stump and once the bike was sitting on the sump, rock forward to slide off the other side and turn quick to get between the two big sharp rocks was terrifying until the day I finally beat it. The people in the house about quarter of a mile away would have heard me whoop. They certainly saw me limping back pushing a broken bike enough times. Good on you for your attitude.

      Buy a used 2 stroke bike but not to used. Your height and weight come into factor on the engine size. @ 160~180 you should be looking at a 250cc. Run from 4 strokes unless you like to pay 3 times more to fix. CR250 FTW

    i lived in California in the mid 90's, back during the Jeremy McGrath, Steve Lamson, Doug Henry on Team Honda days. Back when everything was 2 stroke. I have a RM50 and then a YZ60. Had to sell the bikes due to a move as my dad was in the Air Force. I now have a 5 year old son and I cannot wait for the day when I can teach him to ride and we can go on trails together. Love your channel, love the wholesome nature and look forward to interacting with my son the same way.

    In watching your videos i have realized that we have very similar backgrounds. I too was in commercial construction management for many years....today we run our own small renovations business. I have always enjoyed and appreciated the “right tool” for a given task. And related to this video, i too enjoyed several years of riding dirt bikes with my twin sons, just one on one time. Days riding, then cleaning and maintaining the bikes, grabbing lunch together (both on and off the trail). Great memories. Today my sons are 21. Both very close to the family, one even working full time in the renovations business with us. Its an amazing thing to see your son grow in knowledge, understanding, and skill in the trade work. He is quickly becoming a very skilled finish carpenter....with a good solid foundation in construction materials and procedures.
    Anyway....thanks for sharing your life experience

    I seldom have instances where I have to show how brave I am. Some think foolhardy is brave, it isn't. Some would say I was brave to climb mountains, but I wasn't. I took every precaution to make sure I would not fall off the mountain that the odds of it happening were less than dying driving to said mountain. Yet if you think about it, there are more instances where we missed a chance to show courage like when you don't say something when you know you should have is that courage? No of course not, but if you say something when it needs to be said, like if somebody's kid is getting in trouble, you need to say something to the kid's parents. It does take a certain kind of bravery to become involved and it happens more often than you may think, because we are not paying attention we miss the opportunities to really be brave.

    I just started to ride myself and I have a old xl600r and I focus on going slow and balance, I ride mostly 1at gear and i also go out and challenge myself, to go through obstacles slow and steady and challenge myself! And to be honest, it's the best thing I have done! I have 27 years road bike experience and this by far is the best! I try to ride at least 3 to 4 days a week and hit the power lines next to my home and practice balance and throttle control and it brings me great joy and also riding a vintage bike! I have a bout in our port that I’ll spend a hour every once in a while approaching fro various angles and circling just to feel how the boat reacts to different currents and winds. It builds my feel for the boat and my confidence. My friends marvel at my skills at docking the boat which is easier than going around the bouy. I wish other boaters did this. They are hard to watch dock their boats.

    I have been riding for almost 13 years now on Monday it will be 13 but I have learned a lot about the sport and bikes learn your bike get comfortable with it don’t rush anything next ride in the mud and snow it will make you a better rider it helps you learn to balance and control your bike. Always make a challenge for yourself and keep going over it practice balance pull up slowly and stop and try and hold it once you learn the basics and learn your bike and every once and a while challenge your skill level make yourself uncomfortable some times it makes you a better rider wrecks are a part of riding that also can make you a better rider it makes you learn what you can and cannot do

    • @tillerjets
      @tillerjets 6 лет назад +37

      Chris J the bike he chose is arguably the best and mostly widely used bike for the category of woods riding. So no, a 4 strike is not always better.

    • @chrisj2114
      @chrisj2114 6 лет назад +15

      Loren Jensen agreed it is a widely used bike and I agree that 4 strokes are not always better. But I still think it would have been a better option for the riding in that area and his riding style. Gas is always easier to find than gas and oil in a situation where you run out far from the house.

    I am curious why you chose a 2 stroke if this was your style of riding, wouldn't a 4 stroke with its low end torque have been a better choice or do intend to "rip it up" after mastering your balance etc?

    • @markwarren5644
      @markwarren5644 6 лет назад +1

      Modern two strokes have scads of torque, very lightweight also.

    • @petzltreeclimber
      @petzltreeclimber 6 лет назад

      Two strokes also are "less prone" to stalling at lower RPMs compared to most four strokes.

    • @1966cambo

      the opposite is true,4 strokes can be lugged but 2 strokes typically don't make power until higher rpm.

      Cambo, the modern factory enduro engines are very different than what you may have experienced with older ones. I currently own a 450 4 stroke enduro and wish I would have gone for either ktm or husky 2 stroke. Less moving engine components, lighter framework, easier to pick up too.

    LOL. Looks like a blast. I used to have a Honda CT90. It was so much fun. With the ultra low gearing, it simplified these types of maneuvers. Gravel used to scare me. One of my friends explained that I needed to loosen up, and let the back tire do what it was going to do. He said to quit fighting it! When I finally relaxed, I learned to enjoy gravel riding. I actually grew to enjoy the feeling of the back tire drifting back and forth. Though it drifted, it never went out from under me unless I did something dumb.

One piece of advice I would give is get some boots trust me its worth it. Hope you have many more days of enjoying your machine 🤘

    So true about slow speeds. After I started riding a Harley and learned how to control it at 10mph and under using a combination of the brake, clutch, and throttle my handling of a dirt bike completely changed. Once had a motorcycle cop tell me if you can't control a big bike in 1st gear you have no business running one in 5th.

    Great video, I too have re-entered the sport with my 15 year old son. I bought a 300 2 stroke for just the same benefits as you, they are almost impossible to stall and thrive doing slow work or lugging around. I enjoy the light weight as I find my self picking it and myself up quite a bit. I’m 54 and I found that on our first real single track ride I developed arm pump in the first 20 minutes and this lead to some serious whisky throttle as I could not even feel that I was twisting the throttle! After stretching and increasing my calcium and magnesium intake the pump seems to be less every time I go out. I envy your riding area, I just have about an acre to practice on with out having to load the bikes and travel to our riding area. But i can do it everyday here. Thanks for the great video and good luck!

    What you said about conquering what you’re afraid of, you’re 100% correct. If I were you I’d look at it like this, when you first bought the homestead, you were scared, you didn’t know if it would work out but you took the chance and you did it because it made you happy and the only way to know if it’ll work is to try it. When I first started racing 17 years ago, I am now 21 years old, my biggest fear was racing fast next to someone, because you don’t know what they’re next move could be and they could make a mistake at any moment. Well as I grew older I was struggling to do well in races because of this fear. My dad couldn’t figure it out, I was faster than any other rider in my class during practice, but come race time I was almost getting last. He finally figured out what my issue was and sat me down, and said this, “I see you’re struggling with being near other riders, when you come out of that gate put your feet on your pegs and dive in to the group, the best way to be away from everyone else is to be in front.” So when my first main event came up that day, I got first in the holeshot and led every lap all the way to the finish line. I’ll never forget that day.

    Back when I was married 12 years ago, my wife and I got a dirt bike and a 4 wheeler so we could having something of shared interest to spice up our lives and go to off road parks with other members of her family who also had off road vehicles. Several months later, my wife left me for another guy... and the vehicles didn't get ridden much thereafter because with my living on one income, I often had to work weekends to make ends meet... which took time away from such recreational pleasure. The vehicles sat in my garage unused for 10 years until I decided to just give them away to a guy down the street who knew more about how to fix and maintain them... so I could have more space in my garage. They were fun to ride when we had them...might have kept them if I had my own land to ride them on. It is amazing some of the obstacles that the expert riders choose to tackle at the off road parks... which were way beyond what our vehicles were capable of handling...if we had the nerve to push them to those limits. Thankfully, no injuries came from our novice riding experiences...never got clobbered by other riders who were often flying out from around blind corners and hills. I usually chose the path of least resistance as there was sometimes a bit of competition to get from point A to point B the fastest and not get left behind. To just play around in a mud hole and risk the bike dying on me or getting submerged and filthy all over... wasn't my cup of tea. Kick starting the bike wasn't always easy to get it running again... that was my worst fear... having it die on me.

    99% of your problem is that you're trying to ride a 2 stroke speed machine like it's a 650 four stroke thumper. Sure, you /can/ do it, but you're cutting yourself off at the knees. You're making it far harder than it has to be and eliminating the opportunity to really learn what can be done with equipment more suited to the task.

      Bike needs to be opened up from time to time for sure. But these slow skills will pay off tenfold.
      Give Cody a few months of riding like this. He can add speed later when the confidence grows.
      Many obstacles do require much more momentum for sure. But without good skills throwing oneself at an obstacle and hoping for the best is a great way to spend money and break things.

      These 300 two strokes are pretty good at lugging, watch Graham Jarvis, of course its not made to be lugged the entire time it being riden (risk fouling plugs, filling power valves with spooge and having your pipe leak all over your swing arm). Hey Brother, I used to ride motocross and found myself enjoying woods riding quite a bit more. Its the personal challenges in the woods that made it a bit more interesting for me. These exercises you are doing are genuinely the best way to become most competent on your bike. The water crossing made me chuckle as I recall riding up here in Canada in the spring when the trails are all flooded and my buddies are on 4wd quads having a hoot and I'm struggling trying to gingerly ride through deep water and slick muck. I learned it was far easier to hug the tank tight with my legs and roll on the power through it and let the bike do the work, then my buddies couldn't catch me on the bike ahaha. Also just finished Mrs. Wranglerstar's and your book modern homesteading. I really enjoyed the read, I found it inspiring and also reassuring that my soon to be wife and are on the right track. Keep up the good work and god bless

Looking back, I saw a different side of my dad that some of my siblings never saw. I learned more about how to be a man from our 'playing' than i did from all the ear-chewing. Entirely up to you Cody, but I've geared down to 12/52 sprockets. My riding buddies have since followed suit. (250 & 300 ktms & gasgas)
    How often are you flat out in top gear? We barely ever open the bikes up to top of top gear, so don't miss the top speed. (Plus we road race for the high speed buzz.)
    We found a huge amount more control available in the slow technical stuff. Let's you really tighten up those practice turns.
    Also practice those tight turns sitting down, keeping yourself upright and pushing the bike down. Relax. Get right up on the seat by the tank and soon enough you'll be balancing doing circles on and off the steering stops! (Low side foot eventually comes right up high off the pegs).
    This will seriously help your firewood slaloms, turning the bike seamlessly under yourself while sitting down.
    Don't be fooled by everyone who says you have to stand up when riding, each position has its time and place :)

    Not sure if you have noticed this yet but using your rear brake in slow tight turns provides stability as long as you moderate the throttle and of-coarse microscopic adjustments in the friction zone of your clutch. Remember under 12 mph you actually lean away from the turn yet face it with your shoulders and legs. Basically stay above your tires contact patch and bury that right knee into the tank for a left turn and vise versa. Maintain a straight up posture.
