    Actually sold my 5D mark IV and went all in on Fujifilm with the X-T4 and their 16-55. Worst mistake I've done. So this week I bought a brand new EOS R for 1500$. And I couldn't be happier. It has a stable and easy to use operating system, take stunning images, and it's so compact! Even though it's "old", it's a super good photography camera. I'm not using it for video, but as a photographer, it's still awesome

    I use the R as a B cam to my R6. Couldn’t be happier about it! :) It is a solid performer and once you know about its shortcomings, you can work around it (e.g. Ninja V for 10bit, picking the right lens, using a speedbooster, etc.). Also, it feels awesome in the hands 🤩

    • @joeyvela
      @joeyvela  2 года назад +1

      Nice!! How do you like it vs the R6? I can see where it has its weaknesses but for overall quality as a multipurpose camera this camera is so good! I like the streamlined feel Canon went for in their first attempt at their mirrorless camera, it definitely is a solid hold when taking photos & handheld video 🔥

    • @ElBoyoElectronico

      @@joeyvela The R6 is awesome, but for video use one can see its flaws especially in contrast to the R5. The R6 has no custom video modes, no av/tv mode for video and a crippled hdmi output, which are all things even the R has. So I think the combo makes sense for me.

  • @lionelchanis9774

    The EOS R basically is still a very good and capable camera till this very day. Being the same as the 5D mark 4, it’s just a mirror less camera with a smaller body design. Thanks to its 30 megapixel sensor, commercial photography work and print ads is just great together with Canon’s color science. And addition to its auto focus tracking, fashion photography could never been any easier. Having the EOS R6 together with me, the EOS R had always been my work horse camera till this very day for all my professional photography works.

    I just picked up the R as my first foray into mirrorless and, so far, I’m loving it. I found one used with a grip for under $900 (before tax) and was able to find a EF adapter for $80. Using focus peaking with my collection of vintage MF glass and the built in AF functionality for standard lenses has been awesome. One lens that’s always struggled, my old Sigma 50 1.4 (non-art) is hitting every shot with no tweaking. I can’t wait to try it for portraits with eye tracking.

    Great video, very interesting points! I’m a lumix shooter personally and I think there’s an element of going against the grain the gets imbedded into all lumix shooters as they’re killer cameras but often overlooked. Much like the Canon R. Like yes the R was a pretty bad deal of a camera when it originally released when compared to the competition but now it’s down in price is certainly offers a great value proposition, especially if you lean more towards photography, you’re getting a FF 30mp sensor and access to Canons world class glass with a good native adapter that can open up a world of affordable used lens market for the EF mount that’s been around for over 30 years.
    I will say though I do think the single card slot is a knock to the camera. It’s not about storage size it’s about redundancy. SD cards are not very stable forms of storage and run the risk of corrupting out of nowhere. Many pros doing events like weddings and such prefer to have dual cards because they can’t reshoot should data be lost!

    • @joeyvela
      @joeyvela  2 года назад

      Dude idk how I missed this.. my bad! 😅 So yea I completely agree with the camera line.. Limix shooters are loyal haha but I’ve seen some pretty awesome stuff coming out of those visually so I get it!
      Yea when it comes to those high pressure events like weddings where the footage you shoot is essentially someone’s memories.. having backup is vital! I’ve shot so many weddings and have relied on the one sd card slot for so long that I trust it, but gear is gear and having a fail safe is always a plus 🙌🏼

    Joey you may have swayed me with this. I am a real estate photographer and videographer and I have been looking into what my next tool will be. I currently shoot on the classic 7D MKII and it has honestly been a real beast, especially for such an old crop sensor camera. But the limit of 20 MP can sometimes begin to show. And the video quality is thoroughly mediocre. Not to mention only offers ALL-I at 24 and 30FPS and has no servo AF using 60FPS which as you know is actually the preferred speed because of the ability to speed up and slow down footage. Just can't do that with 30FPS.
    I was considering the R7 but I just figure that if I am going to buy a professional camera, why not enjoy the functionality of a high res full frame that, while not nearly as good as the more recent entries in the lineup, is still more than enough than I need for what I do. EOS R for my work and I still have my 7D II for wildlife and sports. I am covered! I could buy the R5 but honestly why get something now when a year from now there will probably be the MkII and I will immediately regret having not waited

    I'm making a move from Nikon Z6. Selling the whole brand. I've been researching the whole EOS line for a week. Can't make a decision. My largest reason to move over is for better Autofocus, eye tracking, and general tracking. Hobby/Consumerist. Quickest thing I'm capturing is my small children. 80% photo/ 20% video. Is there any reason I really need to step up to the R6 or is the R, or RP a good bet? EIther one of which could make some RF 2.8 glass a quicker reality. Thx!

      Dude! That’s awesome, let me be the first to welcome you to the Canon family 🙌🏼 & thanks for checking out the video! Either cameras are solid purchases, but if you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck, I would recommend going the R route, unless you really need true 4k at 60fps then go for the R6.
      I’m looking to pickup the R6 here soon for work, so I’ll create a video covering those specs and a side by side with the R! Stay tuned for that one in the next week or so!

    I think my only concern is that it records in 8 bit video rather than 10 bit 4:2:2. Do you think editing colour in post the footage would fall apart?

    • @joeyvela
      @joeyvela  2 года назад +1

      That’s actually a solid question! So I have both Canon & Blackmagic cameras and of course color-bit wise there’s a massive difference (8-bit to 12-bit) but with coloring the R in c-log it actually holds its weight well, even when I mix camera shots together in videos.
      The R can handle a solid grade before you start seeing it show signs of breaking down image wise. If you’re looking for a solid base layer of a LUT to REC709, I use Buttery LUTS for everything. You should check out their site 💯

    I went from the Canon 6D to the Canon EOS R about 1.5 years ago, and as much as I love the EOS R, I also dislike it in some regards.
    The noise control on higher ISO values are great, and the megapixel count is nice. But the one thing I absolutely hate about mirrorless (or at least the EOS R), when shooting continuous. Tracking and panning cars or moving objects while shooting photos is a nightmare, DSLR is way way better in that regard as you always see your subject live, and not in a 'stutter' for each frame.
    Wish Canon could update the EOS R with vehicle and animal tracking though. Other than that, I've been pretty happy with the EOS R, and for someone who has not been used to articulating screens, that thing has been a game changer for photos, as I cant capture weird angles without me, myself being involved in cracking my back to get the certain shots. 😂

      Dude!! Same haha the screen was a game changer for me & the whole back thing.. I totally get it 😂
      I think the R definitely has some limitations to not only it’s build but also it’s capabilities in comparison to older DSLR’s & newer mirrorless’.
      I do have that same stutter experience when taking photos, but I have pretty great trust in the autofocus where I’m hitting about 80-90% of my shots tack sharp. No camera is perfect but as an intro to mirrorless & for new creators, it’s a beast 🔥

    I have my R since January 2021. I shot over 70k pictures with it, and never let me down. The AF is fantastic, I can use every Canon EF lens with it, with 100% Focus Accuracy. I can't even remember a time, when I missed focus with it. Even third party lenses (like the sigma 85 non art) is working with it, and waaay much better than a DSLR. In my opinion this is decent choice buying used. In my country you can buy one arount 1200-1300$ Used, and can outperform everything at that price.

    2 SD cards for me or peace of mind. Shooting client work with only one card always has you worried about card failiure.
    Now ... it's never happened to me in the like 12 or 13 years I;ve been shooting but having that extra ease of mind of a second copy ... especially when shooting a wedding ... is huge.
    It's not about what it does but rather what is could prevent ...
    I have a EOS R (along with a 5D2, T3i, T1i, XSi ...) but that being said ... I think I'll be getting getting the R7 to be my secondary body moving my 5D2 to backup body and allowing my T3i to join my T1i and Xsi in my daughters collection. LOL

      I can totally agree with that, it’s always nice knowing you have backup for the just in case scenario! I’ve been in a situation where I was shooting one bts and went to check the format settings to see how much space I had left for my next project and bam.. accidentally formatted all my bts photos 🫠 so I totally get having backup for those bigger weddings where EVERY shot matters!
      I think that’s a great route to go after the R, it does have some advantages even with the crop sensor so that should be fun to use!

I never lost a roll of film or had a single memory card corrupt. Nor have I ever accidentally erased or formatted a card (though I have accidentally deleted photos on the computer). Even today, I have two card slots, but have them to record one after the other, not as backup.

    Nice video. I upgraded from EOS 800D and Bought the EOS R around 6 months ago for 1350$ and I have to say the photo quality and dynamic range is pretty good even comparing it to other cameras in 2022(Altho 5D mkiv is slighty better), But the video quality is really not on par with new cameras in 2022. the dynamic range of C-log 1 is pretty average and the autofocus is not as good. It's good for a personal or small project but definitely wouldn't recommend it for any serious professional work. The battery life for photo will last you for like 3-5 hours depending on the type of photoshoot.(if you turn it off during shots it might last even longer). The ergonomic is good too. But I really wished that they would've stuck with the wheel and the joystick.

    Short answer - no. Not since Canon banned third party RF lenses. Sold mine, got a Sony

      From what I read it was just the third party EF to RF adapters! Hopefully they don’t dip into the lenses because sigma & rokinons are great lenses to use!

      @@joeyvela Nope, all 3rd party lenses with AF are affected. That means we will not see the two f/2-f/2.8 Tamron zooms for Canon (the 35-150 was the reason tomgo Sony not Nikon for me)

      I know Sony’s have upgraded their color science and made adjustments since I last had a Sony (ASii & A6300) but there’s something about shooting on a Canon, even if it’s an older R, that just feels right. Canon has been in the game for so long and the feel of their body style in hand, the way the shutter sounds when taking pictures and the color science straight out of camera for video is unmatched. You won’t be disappointed jumping over & having two R’s which will actually give you soo much more flexibility when using them on shoots! Let me know if you end up going that route! Want to hear your experience 💯
