This is one of the most thoughtful, informative, and unbiased reviews i have seen on comparing Canon’s first FC Mirrorless to the newer R offerings. Plus your pleasant and friendly personality makes your whole presentation professional and totally enjoyable!! Im happy to be one of your new fans!!
I enjoyed your video. I’m not a professional and just a hobbyist, and I’ve owned this camera for a little over two years. It really suits my needs and exceeds my skill level. I really don’t have any complaints w/exception to ibis, but I mostly shoot stills and the lenses I have are stabilized. Enjoyed your video and nice to know the R is still a revenant camera compared to current standards.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Ya, it’s all about matching the photographer/videographer’s requirements with the gear that can handle that requirement, and for me, the R checks off a lot of those boxes! Which lenses are you currently using with the R?
The R is such a beast and I still like the colors and the rendering qualities of it. Also, in contrast to my R6, it has custom videos modes! Especially for portrait and studio photo work, the R shines!
I agree. Although, I think we had this conversation a while ago: I never use custom shooting modes 🤷♂️ I know the lack of them in video on the R6 is frustrating for those that do, but I’ve just never gotten into the habit
Spot on analysis! I love my R!!! I don’t do sports or action, though, I do wish they would give us animal eye AF. The tracking is fine 90% of the time for slow moving subjects, but, I’m still not willing to give up the 30mp resolution for better tracking!!!
@@BunnyHop12 Yes, look at my Instagram to see pics of my granddaughters. It's Starriddin2. Toddlers are always a challenge. The face tracking is fast enough for them. Getting the composition with them is harder than portrait shots.
Justin, I couldn’t watch this video, but listened to it as I was driving on my phone. Very nicely done. You know from past videos how highly I think of the EOS R and that it was my first mirrorless camera. I’ve been tempted by the R 5 , but since I do 99% stills, it suits me just fine. Jason Lanier always says four pieces of advice at the end of his videos and one of them is, “ Find the right gear that works for you,” and the R just does. Also, I’ve seen photo web sites where photos are taken with the R5, R6, and R, and the R ones are usually my favorite. Irene Rudnyk did a comparison of the four (with the RP) and the R came out last. She obviously had a bad copy. AND, when she first started using the R5, she said, “But I really love the EOS R!”
That’s a very good point about finding the gear that’s right for you. Everybody is going to have personal biases and they change over time. I can’t speak for anyone else’s thoughts on a camera. That’s why I have this channel to share my own thoughts!
I have the EOS-R and the 90D. They compliment each other very well. I will probably upgrade the 90D to the R7 but the 90D is a great camera. The R does everything that I want a FF camera to do and more. I use it 85% of the time. A joy to use. I use the mfn-bar for digital zoom (left side and swipe) and turning the histogram on and off (right side). I turn it on and off with the lock button which is programmed to only work with the mfn-bar. This has become a very useful feature for me. Using the upper right corner of the back screen for setting the focus point(s) in relative mode works for me like my 90D's joystick. Perfect for setting initial eye focus location. Sometimes I don't need this feature and don't want to accidentally move where I am keeping my focus point so I have reprogrammed the illumination button on top of the camera to toggle it on and off. I haven't bought an RF lens yet so I use the control ring EF-RF adapter. Love control ring for ISO control. I can turn on the histogram with my mfn-bar and then adjust the ISO watching the EV bar and the histogram for setting the ISO. I really miss this feature on my 90D. I cannot believe that many pass up the very useful control ring on the adapter to save $100. The R is just a great camera for photographers.
@@JustinMyersPhoto I am pretty mediocre at everything. lol... Wildlife, events, portraits, landscape. @@smalltalk.productions9977 I actually have a video comparing my thoughts on the RP vs the R, as well as a couple videos about my thoughts on the RP. I enjoy both cameras. The RP is hard to beat when it comes to value for the price, but it also depends on what you need from a camera
This was and still is my main shooter. The pictures quality is amazing I do a lot of street photography, landscape photography, and portraits and its 💯👌🏼👍.
I love the R6 as well. If you’re interested, I did a comparison between the R and R6 on my channel a few months ago. I will say, that the R does well for putting it on a tripod and getting that extra 33% or so of resolution. Is landscape / astrophotography what you typically shoot?
I had an R6 and sold it. I HATED the IBIS. It ruined more footage than it saved. I couldn't disable the IBIS and just use the specifically chosen stabilised lenses!!! Seriously loathsome. Changed over to an actual cinema camera. I love working with a camera dedicated to the task, it improves my skills and lessens the mental conflict. And no IBIS in the camera means no camera second guessing intention. I use stabilised lenses and a rock solid sensor. But boy do I miss shooting stills on the R6. The flip screen, the jpgs, the speed and the quiet operation offer a different style of waist level, point (at the screen) and shoot which I love. The R looks like exactly the machine I am looking for. Back to flip out point and click, no IBIS (hooray!!) and dedicated stills ergonomics. Have seen folk rave about the feel in the hand of the tapered moulded grip. That wonderful 5D IV sensor and stupendous ISO. There’s video there in a pinch or if I need to quickly generate easy content. Mmmm, let the hunt begin.
I loved the R. I've since traded them both in on an R6 to compliment the R5 I purchased earlier this year. But it was entirely more of a pleasure to shoot with than the 5D4.
