Muscle Car Quarter Panel Replacement at Home - Road Runner Clone

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- The worst part about rust repair, is you usually have to do the same job twice. 2 quarter panels, 2 doors and 2 fenders. This 1968 Plymouth Satellite was no different, it needed both quarter panels replaced. The car is now officially rust free! Unfortunately I now have to take on the body work for primer and paint.
Let me know what you guys think. Any tips or tricks?

You don't have to thank US for watching! Thank YOU for sharing!
Wow you are good, you make it look so easy....
The last two quarter panel videos were very educational. They reminded me of your early videos. The teacher in you was shining through. Thank you for sharing you skills.
I’m a Mopar guy and I love this
I'm a Ford guy and love this
If there's one thing I wish I learned when I was a young man it's what you're doing here. I passed on many cars I wanted because of body panel rust issues.
Thank you for this content. Watching the resurrection of old iron is very satisfying.
Dan, between D & D Speed shop, Halfass Kustoms & ITG I've learned alot....thanks!!! God Bless!!!
Another good one is Fitzee's Fabrications, His videos are great how to's on fabricating patches and panels!
@@dannycasler4959 amazing what Fitze does with sheet. Have been following him for awhile worth watching if you are into sheet metal fab, learned quite a bit from his work.
Bad Chad
I'm a big fan of half-ass kustoms. The Skid Factory is another great channel
Best way to Go TIME Lapse , My favorite... Yes very long quarter panels, but your way makes me want go that route when i do mine, cut out the main portion, then go back trim out spot welds.
Your doing a great job on the car, it's going to be a nice looking car when your done
You have very long arms to pull the head light out from back there lol. Looking good man. I love the videos
Well, I’m glad you’re on the 56 Wagon but I can’t wait to see this get finished too!
Great job! As a 30 year body and paint tech, 20 in restoration, you are doing fine. Only repair what you have to, why replace the whole thing when a skin and edge repair is all you need! The only thing I do different than you, I would have taken the top all the way to the edge like you did the rest of it. I was taught it takes less to clean up the weld seam on that bend as it distorts less. But,!tomato, tamato, right?😆
Old ply looking better every day.
Also check out Fitzee’s Fabrication he’s another Canadian RUclips or lives in Newfoundland
I love th e old mopars. Good stuff on this channel!
A quarter panel replacement around here N.L canada is at least 1000$ probably much more if there is rust to remove,This is provided you have the quarter panel in your possession already.
It's going to be a nice driver. Have you found a good motor yet?
Looking more and more like a keeper everyday. 😉👍
I’m very impressed with the work on the old Plymouth, you’re doing a great job Dan. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the project as it goes along , keep it up, she’s going to be sharp
that guy is a cheap hack
@@glenncutright9769 That is your opinion and you’re welcome to it but I think the object here just to show us we can do this at home in our own garage without going through a frame off restoration and spending a fortune, remember this is not a GTX or a hemi road runner it’s just a satellite
@@robertbrydge5778 ok
"....before we get back on the Pontiac...." LMAO....You intentionally trollin again, D???
I cringe every time I see you walking around with your pants tucked into your boots and you’re sitting down in Weldon have a big scar on the top of my foot from Sparks slag getting in my boot from a hole in my pants anyway great video
Will be awesome with a HEMI in it!
LS 6.0 Hemi 😂
Cover the glass so you don’t pit them when you weld
Too late
This has been a great series !
A rusty Mopar! Looking forward to watching this.
You're doing a Great Job... Just bit of advice... Cover your windows when doing metal work inside or out... Otherwise they get peppered with the cherries and ruined. I had to learn that the hard way
That ol’ Mayflower is coming together real nice.
GREAT content and enthusiasm... we all need this in these f****d up times. Thanks for keeping me motivated on my project... any hints on what you are powering that thing with???
LS 6.0 😂
Danielle called it a Pontiac in her vid😁 Lol. Awesome job Dan👍 Thanks for sharing.
love the Mopars and the Tri-Fives, run the wagon with the big block, a turbo 400 and a gear venders O/D and skip all the electronics lol, keep up all the good work on the channel
A Gear Vender Overdrive is about $3200.oo Damn expensive....
@@stevehetrick2676 Wow, I thought they were 1200.00, that's not going to work, lol thanks steve
Dan, LOVE that music that you put to your videos, especially the fiddle music .....Keep on Keeping on my Canadian Friend......
What type of paint do you buy? Lacquer, enamel?
Awesome it coming along real good.
Got a motor for it yet ?
Silly question, but what kind/brand of grinding disks are you using? The ones I can get easily seem to be crap. AND, something I tried out recently for the first time, you can custom order spray cans which may be helpful if you want to "dust on" a faded version of the original colour so it doesn't look like a new paint job. I was thinking of suggesting that for your floors, (imagine the impression of peeling back the carpet and seeing a scuffed up green on that pristine metal), but would also help you get some patina back into your freshly painted quarters.
I was going to ask the same thing! For as many as he uses I am sure he has found a good brand!
really enjoy your videos watch a lot of youtube you do a really great job keep it up
Another good job. It has been nice to see you learn and grow your skills over the time I have been following you.
I am digging the music.much better than the other channels hip hop
Lol many years ago when I first started doing this kind of work, we used pop rivets and even brazing as methods to attach panels and patches. We did not have mig welders back then. When we brazed panels we had to control the heat by using wet rags in a bucket of water, we have come a long way since then. Now they are using glue for some panels now. Btw Those trunk " drop downs " are called trunk extensions in case you wanted to know. Geat job on the old Plymouth!
Yeah. I feel spoiled allt of times.
Biggest problem I have doing large panels is they will always twist instead of bowing or warping, like you said go slow. Great job.
Dan, YOU HAVE GIVEN ME THE COURAGE TO DO MY QUARTERS ON MY 70 CADILLAC DEVILLE CONVERTIBLE!! HONESTLY IF I NEVER SAW U DO THEM I WOULD NEVER ATTEMPT DOING THEM ON MY CAR THANK U SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!
Looks good Dan, love mopar B bodies. 👍🏻
You do really good work
3 lol
I think you did a great job! We did a quarter panel replacement way back in the eighties. We just left a 2” overlay. I think the way you did yours was really cool!! I wish I had known about this before. I might have not sold my old Camaro. It was the car that we did the replacement quarters on, and I couldn’t figure out a way to replace them again, on my own. Your really doing some great stuff! Keep it up!!
Man you never stop working. I mentioned to Coastal Auto about using Fastenal to ship that motor and trans. They are usually much cheaper on shipping heavy stuff.
Unfortunately Fastnenal doesn't ship stuff like that up here in Canada.
@@nummnuts22 well dang, so much for that.
@@LeftForDeadGarage I know, had parts and panels south of the boarder I lost out on. Fastenal was cheaper then most but would only bring it to the boarder.
There is a dude in some videos. Is that your dad ? Looks a lot like you.
Mur is dad , me thinks .
Great video brother! I have a 1970 Roadrunner and I took it to a body shop #yachtsandrods in North Vancouver and the owner (Mike) is a complete donkey. My car has been there for 7 years waiting to get done. He cut the quarters off and now doesn't want to work on it anymore. I can't believe the guy. ANYWAY.... I am now going to bring it home and do it myself. This will help me a lot.
PONTIAC??? HOW DARE YOU!!! lol Thats blasphemi! I like ol mopars but I prefer pontiacs 👍👍👍👍
Good Morning Gr8 timing 🇺🇸🇨🇦👍
The pieces you are calling "DROP DOWNS" are actually called TRUNK EXTENSIONS. And it is a PLYMOUTH!!!!!! Not a DODGE. Your wagon isn't an OLDSMOBILE is it?? Eventually you will get to the rear end. More than likely it is not a sure grip or (POSI), I am guessing you'll call it... lol...
Very motivating. I'm about to pull the trigger on my dream car, but it's a rusty rotted out POS, but all I can afford. I'm about to take up mig welding, and it will be a learning experience. I guess I can't really ruin the car since it's 75% rust anyway. What brand quarters did you use? Are they noticeably thinner than the factory? I'm guessing so, but it is what it is.
20 hrs per 1/4 x shop rate. Plus additional repairs for drop downs & wheel houses. AINT CHEAP TO PAY FOR THEM TO BE DONE RIGHT. More affordable for butcher job. You get what you pay for. Or be like Dan, buy tools & equipment and learn by doing.
I have a 69 charger that I've owned since the 90s. It's always been in need of quarter's since i've owned it. I def' can't afford to pay someone to put new quarters on for me, So I've always wanted to do it myself. I'm a pretty good welder, but have never tackled a new quarter on a car...
After you tacked the quarter on the car and cut the thin strip of metal from the top. How big of a gap did it leave between the old metal and the new metal on the new panel? The width of a cutoff wheel blade I'm assuming....
Since those panels are such thin metal, and the gap between the two pieces is as wide as a cutoff wheel's blade, was it hard to tack the two pieces together without burning the exposed edges of the metal? I've heard some people say that they bend the old lip of the quarter and let the new one overlap... Is that a good idea or not so good? Just asking questions because I'd like to ask someone before I tackle a project like that... Thanks.
I don't know how it doesn't warp. I'm flanging the body with an air flanger all along the top, so my quarter overlaps by 3/8 of an inch and plug weld it and use aluminum filler. I think i will have better luck.
Tip......Sand or scotchbrite whole panel while it's on the stand before installation including the backside.....Insures adhesion of products and your back will thank you later
good job but to be definitively efficient, you should put grease everywhere. grease et the only thing very efficient against rust. put grease between metal and carpet, inside door, behind metallic bumper, behind the repairs you can make (everywhere inside cavity- hidden erea - instead of using paint before reclosing), hollow areas (necessarily hidden, so no need to be aesthetic). For rear wings unreachable with a paintbrush, use an extender and poor old oil everywhere each year.Handyman Experience - 35 years. From france
I did Custom Auto body and Painting for over 40 yeas . I`m retired now. I never thought about getting older with this Trade. but i had a passion for auto body ,paint.
If your not already you should check out Fitzee's Fabrications channel. Excellent metal working.
Howdy Dan.. the time lapse gig really works.. I've hung quarters before and door skins and fenders. I'm in no way shape or form any kind of body man..
In watching some of your videos y'all have shown me there are easier ways to get shit done. And at almost 70,, I'll take the path of least resistance Everytime... In fact, after watching y'all using the cut off wheel,, I went to hbr frgt and bought one! Imagine- my age and still buyin tools.. now, just my opinion,, I think that Plymouth would look good painted the original color.. maybe break it up with a satin black hood... And ,,of course ,, black steel wheels, with dog dish hub caps.
I know y'all like the ratty look,, but this Mopar deserves better..
Great videos kid,, you teach me something everyday.. PW
Good morning Dan, nice to see more mopar work. Gonna be good
Turn that into a true muscle machine , Hemi Pistol grip 4 speed , 6 pack hood scoop , fat rubber ,,, YES ! ! ! Crazy Plum Purple
Dan use the same color primer the factory did when prepping for paint it will make the color match much closer to the color on the car WHEN BLENDING
Your doing fine I have installed so many panels over the years that I have lost count. Consider using weld thru primer in spots and invest in some clecos both rivet hole and side clamp. I would recommend .023 wire if not already. Do many many test fits on door gaps and wheel tubs. If you have to apply pressure to the panel to make in align find out why and fix that otherwise you may create bows, lows and highs that your chasing later. The hitting a fuel line well that can end badly. I always try to find the best reproduction panels possible. It will save the customer $$$. Spending 10 hrs. to correct a cheap stamping is bad math.
Like your '55 Chevy look, I'd say black steelies and the dog dish hubcaps. Maybe a beefier tires on the back for looks. You haven't mentioned anything more about the motor you were chasing down.
Back in the day (late 60's) these Mopar guys were just a proud of their stuff as the Chevy and Ford guys. And, those 383's were a hoss. Had to be careful who you raced.
Thats pretty much how i did quarter skins on my 65 chevelle and it was 1st time i welded quarter panels on. Took my time n researched and practice welding. I heard guys around my area charge 800-1400 to hang quarters
Great stuff. AMD makes decent panels, but not for the 67 Coronet. Did a similar job on my 67 Coronet convert and wow, had to scour North America to find donor metal.
The skill and effort demonstrated here is 30 to 40 per hour here (MS USA) Its not rocket science but it requires that kind of focus and drive. Craftsmen are fewer and fewer all the time and 30 to 40 is not enough. And it takes a certain kind of guy. Comfortable behind the shield.
Hey dan you ever have one of those flannel jackets go poof up it flames when you grind or weld..lol
Dont use bounce in dryer when you wash it,or it probably will go up in flames .. keep up the good work buddy mopar or no car👋😁👍.
Most realistic, from my viewpoint, of all car guy channels( tied for #1, with a fellers garage who has cold snacks) who won the 4dr 57?? I been really hopeful to win
i see better the tack weld and air to prevent warpage. That gives me hope i could do some repair work and it would turn out OK enough. Thanks The old boy will be quite strong i hope you do the noise reduction stuff so the car feels high caliber too. Take care, Dennis in Virginia
Hey Dan, like your satellite project, I now you put on your pod cast clone roadrunner, can I give you a kind piece of advice, leave it a satellite, there are several reasons why, the first is it came from the factory a satellite, the second is if you ever decided to sell your beloved satellite, the buyer will be interested in your ride because it is a satellite, with the cost of gas going up way past five bucks a gallon, the 318 small block would be a engine of choice, if you want to stay with a carburetored engine, or a resto mod with a fuel injected modern engine, either way if you were to go that way, it isn't that much more money as opposed to making a 440 clone roadrunner, anyway that's my opinion on your wonderful project, have fun with it, Dan, adios for now,....
Hi Dan, love the videos bro, very informative. So i have a 71 duster i need to do similar work. I need to replace entire trunk, including trunk floor side drop downs, the tail panel, and the lower rear quarters. In what order should i do the metal replacing?
Hi so where are you located is it Saskatchewan? I lived in Saskatoon and Biggar from 1989 till 2019
Nice work..... have you ever watched cold war motors.....you'll fit right in... bunch of good guys
plymouth
I am liking your installation technique. I have installed a few body panels and aligned several fenders, doors ECT. One thing that might assist you in the welding on a LONG panel seam is keeping a wet rag in your opposite hand and quenching each stitch weld as soon as you do it. This helps me in keeping the warpage issue down. ;)
I've got a 1967 Impala Convertible that needs 2 new inner and outer quarters. Not to sure where to start, does anyone have any advice? I have a video of the car on my channel.
Rear quarters are the scariest part for me. I worry myself to death over it. I've only done two sets. Chevy 2 and a Camaro. The Camaro kicked my butt. But after doing it. Everything else seems easier.
Dan... check out RPO paint codes, they have every factory color from 30s+. They even have witch manufacturers carried what colors.
Are you ready to start a 67 chevelle that's even worse?parked this 78.
I'd send a photo or two if I new how.
I've been using the trees growing to the cross member and left rear quarter/well mostly the tree thru the engine bay,its pecan .The tree grown to the fender is cotton wood.burns too fast.
Totally Awesome!
My standards and my hopes aren’t too high , I’m sure it will be kind of junkie.....funny
My First Question,... Im learning also. Why not spray rear Quarters inside with i think they call it Lizard skin Spray ?
I like it so far and get what your saying.... take your time, if someone doesn't like it then buy and fix it themselves. Good enough for the girls I go with comes to mind. I did learn a ton from you and only wish I could still walk/move and do these things. I would go to a wrecking yard an get enough steel to rough up a metal building.... enough to stay dry an not spend months building. I make up my mind a half dozen times and then do something different so go figure, I don't trust myself is what its sounding like... now its d d psycho analysis and occasional paint. Take care kids
How did you get that strip out? Did you cut it off from the inside? There was a big edit between welding the panel on and that strip removal. Please explain 😊
I know it's not an original color because the Impact colors didn't come out until 70 but you should paint the car panther pink and give it to your old lady then take the 57 back and put the tunnel ram 454 in it and the LS from the 57 in the56 wagon since you plan to drive the wheels off of it!
Ive done enough of this stuff to say, i would do it just like you are! Sweet work buddy. Mike from Indiana USA.
Dan a friend of mine had the rear quarters done on his Galaxy years ago and the shop charged him $3,500 with paint, but he supplied the quarters.
Gives me an idea what I'm up against with my two 69 b body's charger and superbee . Superbee doesn't need quarters though however but needs the trunk floor and both rear frame rails
What kind of welder and gas did you use? I would like to replace a quarter panel section myself and your work looks really good.
Averages Around 2 grand per side dan , could be more depends on vehicle and that’s just for replacement no primer or paint . Nice work , your technique is very good . peace friend
Why not make it? I work sheet metal professionally and usually if you match the gauge and radius from the wheel arch center, it's butter from there, you can just measure the beading from top to bottom to center it.
Generally not in favor of masks (covid) but, wish you would wear one when grinding :>)
I wonder what the panel would look like with a thermal camera while you're welding?
With your luck on old engines lately. Would a 5.7 hemi swap be in the cards?
Dan. Good job on the Plymouth. Dan were you able to get engine plate and transmission plate for the wagon. Dani waiting to see you and the doggys.
What welder do ya got there bud? Was thinking about getting a new mig and get an old project car I have fixed up just a bit! Thanks in advance!
This is exactly what I'm about to start on my 69 Plymouth,Sat since 1976,mines the colour of Chuck Norris Jean Jacket after he's been in a fight..hard to tell but yours looks like the same colour as my charger,is it f5?
I love watching your videos. You do nice work. Thanks for sharing brother.
I definitely DONT hate that you fake-patina it! Its a cool patina colour , matches that particular car quite good. The only spots i dont like are these two rust areas from the accident repair on the left side.
How much would you charge for quarter panels on a 71 dart.. or how much should I bee looking to pay
I'd be surprised if could get a shop round me to even do it. If 1 got low enough I'd guess over 3k. I'm sure it would be in body shop jail over a year as well
