DIY Painting an Old Muscle Car on the CHEAP - 1968 Road Runner Clone

  • Judgement day, also known as paint day. After all the prep work it was finally time to lay down some fresh paint. I usually have my old man do the painting because I find it a little stressful. This time I took on the challenge myself! The DIY at home paint job came out pretty damn well if I don't say so myself. The of course I faux patina'd it to match the look of the car. I love me a ratty muscle car!

I hate negative comments and rarely leave them but with all the work you've done to match seams and get things to fit correctly to do a half assed paint job? But then again all of your "projects" are half finished. I'm seeing a pattern here. I worked as a wrench (yes) and built a few cars but man, if you don't have the money, tools, experience, or motivation don't do it.
When I first started watching you it was because it was funny but now I realize that you are serious. High school hack jobs. Very similar to your fellow 'tubers Half Assed Customs. I am unsubscribing wishing you good luck.

@Lynn Michelle Bindert @@DDSpeedShop said he don't know how to paint" his in his Picasso mixing it up learning phase .. It takes a lot of smooth prepping to get it right .. believe you me in auto collision paint repair the customers will look for something in a perfect pain job to put you down .. Ward of mouth can make you or break you in the paint business .. I'm sure once Dan gets comfortable with his stay gun he's liable to go slap plum crazy on the Challenger lol 😆

    • @Tim-57
      @Tim-57 3 года назад +14

      Take a deep breath Lynn.
In my opinion it is harder to match into an old paint job.
If you have really been watching Dan's work, you would know that the ratty look is what he likes.
Focus on your own work, no need to criticize someone else's ... unless it is constructive criticism.
Other than that, take care of yourself.

I love that “survivor” look. Everybody likes a shiny car but to find a car in it’s original form, that just gets my attention more than shiny. I get more excited to see a classic car with it’s all original everything down to weathered paint than I do a full on restored classic. Keep up the awesome work Dan.

Thank you for all of the posts on the 68 Sport Satellite. My family's car when I was a young kid in the 70's was one of these. It was yellow with a black vinyl roof. Then painted all black. 318. Thanks for bringing back a lot of memories. I look forward to every new episode on it.

The shinny was no good for what "we" wanted to achieve! After the scuffing, the ratty look came through. As for mis matched hood/fenders, a car that we sold (new car dealership and never hit) had a factory panel that was repainted a couple different times at the factory before it went out. So you never know why colours change over time. Hit/not hit, paint was not exactly same through out complete spray...? Any who, it's looking great! Proud of you, my man!

We had a '69 Plymouth Belvedere back in the 70's. Dad got it used for $1200 with only 78,000 clicks and we ended up putting over 500,000 on it before a rod started knocking. The last few years she burnt quite a bit of oil, but the motto was, "Drive her 'til she pukes." Leaning tower of power, three on the tree. Like every one of those, you couldn't kill it, it got great gas mileage, and you got the styling of the Road Runner on a Plymouth budget. I was the envy of my high school buddies (until my friend, Ryan, was given his grandpa's cherry '69 Cougar with a 289 Ford small block). I like the looks of your car, and I dig the dog dish caps, the same as you.

Boy this takes me back to 1982,, High school years. My Buddy had one just like this, same everything but he had the 318.He paid like $400 for it. The Car was in Great shape, but the former Lady owner hit an embankment and messed up the front Bumper and left fender. Messed up the frame a little. But I helped him with other friends, and we had it back up and straight in about 2 weeks. Great times!!
BTW,at that time I was running a 78 Pontiac Sunbird Coupe, in Orange. 231 buick V6 that would spin the tires all day!
Im just a Car Guy, Love them All!

Please don't listen to the haters! I love the patina survivor look on your "Dodge". From a resale perspective it's been my experience that a mostly original paint rust free survivor car is more profitable. A complete proper paintjob is an insane amount of labour, not to mention several thousands of dollars in materials. Either all these haters are misinformed from watching reality shows where they pretend to fully restore a car for 10 grand in 2 days, or they are still stuck in 1976 when a complete paintjob cost $50 (and peeled off a week later)

Don’t beat up on the Plymouth over a few negative comments. Now I feel like I have to comment to reassure you that what you’re doing is right. Every vehicle you touch is better than you found it. You save these vehicles from rotting away in a field and get them safe and solid with new brakes and floors, to the point they’re viable projects for a novice. If you put too much time or money in you won’t be able to sell them as almost every car guy wants to finish a car theirs own way. I enjoy watching. Keep doing what you’re doing.
