Just a to keep things from creeping under the bed, purposefully put things there. A few hard sided under bed storage bins (no lids) and Eric can roll them out, put toys into it, and then roll them back in. Make that floor space do double duty. Also, as Cas from Clutterbug says, it has to be just as easy for you to put it away as put it down -- I would say open bins rather than closed systems. I would also work with Eric as part of his "good night" routine to have a 5 minute tidy as you help assist him getting his room reset. Sort of like the joy he had in making his own decisions about putting away his toys -- he can take ownership of his room, you are just there to encourage and aide, not to boss.

Great idea. My kids had limited space so they were allowed to take toys out in the living room. But as soon as they were done they had to get put back into the bins and back onto the closet shelf in their room. We had a box for legos, small cars and wood trains. Soon legos was the biggest bin and the other toys became less played with. The best thing to do for overwhelming clean ups is have less toys. If you do the toy rotation great. But if your kids don’t ask for the toys just get rid of them. 😂 Out of sigh out of mind might be the best decluttering method. It’s your time will tell box. 😉

I also think that having a daily routine to reset the room is necessary for children to learn to keep their space tidy, a habit that will be very helpful as adults. A quick nothing on the floor routine is easily achievable if done daily, and it completely changes the look of the room.

Yay Shannon! Love this new series, you can do it! 💪 I’m thinking maybe time will tell bins for the kids IF they struggle to let go? A’la Dawn the minimal mom. Those REALLY helped my daughter let go of TONS of stuff when the attachement had time to lessen. My son on the other hand is a born minimalist, doesn’t even want new clothes. I have to do interventions on his closet from time to time 😅 I really enjoyed and got tons of motivation from Dawns video ”The BEST Decluttering Ideas for 2024” IF you’d like some motivation 😊
Look at Eric organizing his cabinet! So proud!

You will be finding nerf darts for the next 20 years. My baby is 18 and in college. I emptied the vacuum canister last week and had to completely disassemble it to get out the stuck dart. This past summer we unloaded the world's largest collection of nerf stuff on the neighbor Littles. Eric is the best helper. I love his organization.

I love what you said about quality time and helping the girls with their rooms. My teens are 13 and 15, one is super messy and the other super clean so when I have to help the messy one, i get upset that she doesn't keep it more clean but yes i need to remember it's quality time and helping her to learn organization and cleaning skills.

Back in the day, I used the rotating system for toys from Sidetracked Home Executives. I used bankers boxes and put a variety of toys in each one and labeled the boxes T1, T2, etc. I wrote on a 3x5 card what each box had in them and added the corresponding number on the top of each card, and filed them in my card file box. Then the boxes with the toys were stored away and rotated each week or two. I saw the other day that you can order stickers with scan codes on them and compile a list of what goes with each scan code. You could utilize this the same as the 3x5 cards. By the way, my boys loved this. They weren't so overwhelmed by too many toys at once, and when the next box came out, it was like having new toys.

Our kids are 5 and 7. To keep their room in decent shape, every night before bed, we require their room be fully picked up. And we believe kids age 4-5 and above should be able to pick up their toys independently. So if ever it gets to be too much that they can't manage on their own, it is a signal to us that is time to declutter. And we keep decluttering until that daily pick up is not overwhelming for them. It has made our toy collection rather minimal, but it has made my job as a Mom and their daily routine easier for them, so it's a win all around. I also think it helps them sleep better to go to bed in a peaceful tidy space.

Yes! It helps to do a “mom reset” as I call it. I usually do one every couple of months. They are required to clean their rooms everyday, and I do a room check weekly. But there’s just something about me moving furniture and deep cleaning it all and organizing. They love it when it’s freshly organized. ❤

You did such a great job! You could get some fun peel and stick decals to put on the walls and they are easily removable if you have to change the use of the room again. Or just some fun artwork. Hobby lobby has some fun “boy room” things that you can get fairly affordable on the weeks that wall decor is on sale. We did this for our son’s room when he was really into marvel characters. Had like life size spider man and hulk decals on his walls. My husband found them on Amazon I think. Loved seeing the before and after. Great job! 👏 😊

I know a lot of people are grossed out by this, but when my son was young we just put his mattress directly on the floor, Montessori-style. It's a little counterintuitive, but it actually keeps the room cleaner. They can't shove things under the bed and dust bunnies do not collect under there when there is no bed. Plus a lot of other cultures use floor beds. I'm not aware of much evidence to support this claim, but I know people say they sleep better when they are closer to the floor.

Clothes on the floor getting trampled on....that would be my 16 year old granddaughter. When she was at school and I was at her house babysitting her 15 month old half-sister, I did 10 loads of her clothes that were all over the place. I made her put them away and hang them up. She has a room at my house too and she is required to keep it neat.

I loved seeing him happily roll around on the carpet, and put his toys in the bins. I have a safety concern about the cords on the blinds next to his bed. Perhaps tying them up high and tucking behind the blinds, or someone else may have a suggestion. They are a strangling hazard.

I have wanted to do a toy rotation for YEARs. I was close once. And then I think the pandemic hit because there's a bunch of stuff I like putting bins to make a toy rotation that just stayed in those bins for the rest of your life and then I just literally took certain things out of the bins that my kid asked for. 😂 So yeah. Didn't work persay. But also had less toys in the play room so did help. It has been a lot of survival around these parts for a while. And life is getting a fast forward button while everything was going on.

❤️❤️❤️ I’ve been in both of my daughter’s rooms helping them since filming this. The smiles on their faces, the conversations that were had were priceless. I once read being a parent is kind of like being a captain on a ship. It talked mostly about staying calm in rough waters so your passengers feel safe, but it also mentioned When the captain comes to sit down with you and have dinner it really makes you feel special. Same goes for parenting. When you sit down with your kid and meet them in their space it makes them feel special. I really have to remember to do it more often. It blessed me more than it probably blessed them.

So excited to watch your progress. Happy New Year. I pray God gives you the health and energy to make 2024 the best for you and your family. Eric is so handsome. That smile brightened my day.

He is a cutie, but that's an out of control room, lol. I think you're right, a toy area, a hamper.

I'm desperately trying to help my youngest daughter and son-in-law to declutter and rotate toys. They have 3 boys (6, 4 and almost 2) and a smaller house. They just have too much stuff. Both are slobs (she takes after her dad, not me) and never put things back. I explained to her that everything should have z home and you MUST put everything away. Of course, my husband doesn't understand this concept either🙄 My oldest daughter is extremely neat and my son isn't too bad either.

Great job! What if you do a room makeover in his room upstairs to help him to transition back up there, or at least get him thinking about it. Not that he has to sleep up there right away, but he may enjoy being up there more throughout the day and one day just decide that’s where he wants his room.

I recommend you implement a new family rule. Nothing under the bed. When the kids are told to go clean your room, putting stuff under the bed is not an option. And it should be checked weekly to make sure there is nothing under there. This will help you avoid big clean ups like you did today.
