I'm A Nurse Living At A Hospital Parking Lot In My Car (The VanLife Nursing Dream)

  • My name is Arslan and I’ve been living in vehicles for the past few years. My journey of alternative living began after I was fed up with the high cost of rent in the United States. I fell in love with the idea of living on the road, so over the years, I converted a sprinter van, a Camaro and most recently been living in my 2014 chevy suburban camper car. I enjoy making RUclips videos and recording my different experiences to share with you guys. I’m also a nurse half days of the week because I have a significant passion for helping people.
In This video: I show you what my day looks like while working at a hospital as a registered nurse in the united states and living in my car.
RUclips Posting Schedule: I usually post on Saturdays 9am EST (NY time). I'm currently posting 1 video every 2 weeks but I'm working towards posting 1 video a week.
I love reading your comments and wish I could reply to all of you but my schedule doesn't allow. But I always reply to SUPER CHATS because they pop up on my phone!
P.S. If I need to tell you guys something, I will comment and pin it on my latest video.
All of my long form videos can be found in this playlist: • How I Live In My Car W...

My husband lived in his car in a hospital underground parking garage for four days. Miles away from home he couldn’t afford a hotel room because everything in the general area was very expensive, but there he was living in his car while waiting for me to get through surgery and recovery. He said it was tough at times but being able to visit and spend time with me every day without having to travel so far made it an easy choice. I love him everyday for it.

I am a retired RN living in northern California . I was an LVN for 8 years and an RN for 27 years. I worked as a nurse in 5 states but was certified in 10 states. Luckily for me California finally started paying RNs a more equitable wage for the past decade. But California also has one of the highest cost of living in the country. Nursing is a very exhausting profession. It takes lots of physical and mental stamina to be a nurse. Many people leave the profession after only 3 years due to burnout. The physical toll on body and mind often leads to injury. Nursing is a very stressful occupation, and every nurse is always aware that exhaustion can result in errors which can impact the patient. Nursing is not a profession for the weak. Living in a van at least takes some of the stress away from the problem of getting enough sleep and the anxiety of getting to work on time !

Nursing professors need to teach the importance of bedside manners, empathy and how to calm their ego's. Most RN's I've dealt with especially the newbies walk around with a chip on their shoulder and put themselves at the same level as Doctors. They need to be knocked down a couple of notches. All you see now is nurses congregating around the nurses station, laughing and joking around and staying on their phones while patients have called upon them for an hour. It's the CNA's and LPN's that do most the work with the patients. I've concluded that I'm not fond of RN's.

Many people have no idea how stressful and difficult nursing is. I was an NP. Even when not "working" I was always reviewing my day's events, thinking about the next day and how my patients and their families were doing, and reading journals. I rarely felt I'd done enough but knew I'd done what I could within the time and financial constraints. I've been a patient a few times and made sure the staff knew I appreciated them (without revealing my secret identity). A good nurse is hard to find these days. Their love for nursing has been drained out by poor management. Keep going and know you are appreciated.

I'm an EMT and I work 9am to 10pm 3 days in a row plus overtime. I work an hour away from my apartment so I'm doing partial van life on my work days. I head in the night before when my family goes to bed and live outside the station for the next 3 days. It saves me over 100 miles and about 5 hours of driving every week. I don't really miss out on family time since I'd get home after they are in bed and leave right when they wake up. Plus I get more downtime without the daily commute. I have a plug, all the conveniences of home (sofa, bed, toilet, tv/dvd, kitchenette) and a gym nearby to shower. Everyone I work with knows what I do but the neighboring businesses don't. It's a very comfortable situation for maximizing my time and minimizing my expenses and gives me 4 days off every week to spend with my family. Loved the video. Feels like having a virtual neighbor.

Your videos are the best! I am a nurse and I have converted my car into a camper so I can stay in my car when and if I get snowed in at work. I have car bed with an eggrate foam mattress on top I have a jackery, heating blanket, window covers , and an access to showers, food, company internet at work. My job pays a $20 extra hourly bonus when it snows so yeah will sleep in my car so I can come in.

We just gave the daisy award to our male nurse that took care of my mom in Medina Ohio. He was wonderful with her after her double amputation of her legs. You all make the families stay with them, the best it can be under the circumstances. You guys are amazing!

Congratulations on the Daisy award nomination. Nurses are amazing. I was in the ER in September 2022 and I was so well taken care of that I was so relaxed my BP was 116/70 and it’s always higher than that even with medication.

So happy for you getting nominated! That is awesome. I got a Spotlight Award last year and it was really encouraging.
I work in eligibility, so I dont deal with patients directly after approving them for Medicaid. I took a call from someone asking about copays a few months ago and sensed he wasn't ok, but he refused I call for help. I called for a welfare check anyway. A week or 2 later he showed up to one of our offices (in another part of the state) to report that call saved his life. They found he was having a heart attack. That was even more encouraging.
My mom was an RN. I know it isn't easy. Thank you for what you do. ❤

I had a major GI surgery in 2020 and felt so isolated due to social restrictions. I will never forgot the nurse who worked with me. She was an Angel without wings!! I wouldn’t have pulled through without her. Nurses, good nurses, MATTER! 💕💖

Nurses deserve way more than they are given. My mom has been a nurse for 20ish years. She’s had some hard days but always continues to help people. Good career but definitely deserves better pay. Thanks for the video! Stay safe.

Agreed. And we need more nurses as a lot of nurses are retiring nowadays as well as not many students are going for nursing degrees thus the shortage we’re feeling in every area of healthcare today and it’s going to be worse in the few years.

    • @bradcampbell5766
      @bradcampbell5766 4 месяца назад +3

@@Serenitynow3 I think one of the reasons they have shortages is because hospitals make more $ with less nurses working harder, and nursing is not attractive due to the failure of the system to deliver real health care.

Lol, my sister in laws sister was a nurse. She said that she got tired of the Drs. barking orders at her so she became a Dr. and is very cognizant how she speaks to the nurses.

it’s unfortunate that some doctors feel the need to be rude to the nurses, I’m a doctor myself and always make sure we give everyone on the floor the same respect . i worked as a nurse aid while in college tho so also remember what it was like taking orders from doctors and RNs , i believe starting from the bottom up gives you better appreciation as well for when u place q1h orders or random bowel preps 😅
