Hi! Just started working as a ramp agent, im working for southwest in Puerto Rico. Im a week in and so far so good. Im liking it! I like the physical aspect of it. Since its a really active job the hours go by fast!
Emmanuel Marcano congratulations on your new job. Southwest is a really good company. I am so happy you're liking it. I really enjoy being outdoors and the physical aspect as well. It's such a good feeling to load the plane and get the flight out on time. There's nothing like it.
I have an interview for Horizon Air/ Alaskan Air at PDX pretty excited/nervous. Your videos are definitely giving me a taste of what it's like! Wish me luck!
Hey wassup I didn't want to hit you until I knew it was a go. I finally got my ramp agent position with an airline. I'm in class now dealing with all the computer stuff. I'm sooo happy wanting to work around airplanes in some capacity has always been a dream. You're really the only one with multiple videos and you helped alot. I haven't seen the tarmac only from afar when walking into the airport but I think week after next we hit the ramp. I just wanted to thank you. All the best to you and your family safe travels.

The Bohemian Traveler yes it will, my interview felt good, even though it was a group interview. Just waiting for a email if I’m qualified. Hopefully I am!
When you first started was it confusing at times as in where the bags need to go or which bags you need to load? I really wanna work in the airport atmosphere just worried on getting things mixed up, Is that where having a team with you keeps things on track?
Hunter Selmon it’s not too bad. It’s scary and confusing at first but generally they put the newbies in the pit to stack bags. That is physically challenging but not mentally. But trust me, after a while it will get easier. The bag room is not bad if you organize yourself. Put a cart for each location and area on the plane. At the beginning, you should have people to help and train you.
I love the videos We live in so cal and my husband got on at southwest ... he will start aug 26th at a smaller airport. Do you know how long you must be an employee before trying to transfer to another state? Also I seen you have worked for many airlines do you have a preference and why?
Kim Nuu congratulations to your husband! Usually you have to wait 6 months and be off probation before you can transfer. I prefer working mainline and having a union. My favorite airline so far has been Delta because we were treated so well.
Awesome video! I have a question. Would if you work at a not so very popular international airport, like Richmond INTL. Would the pay be less? Since the main airlines here are American, Delta, and JetBlue.
Nicholas Failla Thank you!! The pay should be generally the same as if you worked for a large station. The difference would be if there were contract companies that worked the flights and not the actual airlines.
How do you guys handle transferring luggage? How long does it normally take to transfer? I have a connecting flight from MCO>ORD, ORD>NRA that has a 40 minute connection. Both flights are in the same terminal. Is that enough time for the luggage to get unloaded and loaded? Thanks.
Jeremy Rodriguez We are a line station so we don’t transfer luggage. All our bags go to baggage claim. That makes life so much easier for us. Lol. Wow, you guys have to hustle!

Love your videos, I got a Interview this Tuesday for United, I just got a question. Its for a part time ramp agent but i'm hoping if i can get in, how hard is it to go full time? I understand theres 6 months of probation but after that if I'm willing to go full time right away, do people normally have to wait long?
Brandon Great question. Usually, on paper you’re considered part time, but in my experience, you can pick up as many hours as you want. In my state it’s up to like 15 hours a day. LOL. So, there’s a swap board and you can just pick up shifts that people are trying to give away. You will have no shortage of hours. Good luck!
I have Swiss Freighter Ramp Agent interview tomorrow, i am not quit sure what i am going to do with this position but I guess it the same things like you do. I am not sure if the lifting bags and working out side would be fit for me. The weather in chicago is really Cold in winter. I like your VDO :)
Hey just really courious how physical ramp agent is... I'm 60 yrs old, ok shape a bit concerned cause you say it's a physical job many time... I'm smaller build 5' 8" 160 lbs. been in office easy lay back job for many years. Do you have a lot of 60 lbs bags?
Gary Cole Yes it’s pretty physical. We do have a lot of 60 lb bags. Sometimes larger. Military and work bags are super heavy as well. You’re on your knees at times and bent over in the bins. Very physical.
Prince99 i’ve worked for four airlines, and if you want to work, you can work as much as you want. Everyone is always giving away their shifts, so you can just pick them up.
R.C Bailey it totally depends. It’s not long before they get the results. However, they may wait until everyone in your training class is done and just give you your training start date. It could take a couple of weeks.
Has anyone here worked for FedEX as ramp agent? I applied for this role for Bologna's airport (italy), and I'll be taking a 2 days FedEX course in Milan. It just seems to me that two days are way too few to learn everything. Did some of you go through this? If so, why?
Congratulations on your new job! I unfortunately don’t have any experience with FedEx. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question. Enjoy your week!
At the airport I work at, and I’m sure it’s pretty similar where this RUclipsr works, you need a valid license but you also need a Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) along with a Radio Certification. The AVOP is a written and driving test you do on the airport grounds.
Alaska Flyer 737 Yes, exactly what Jonah said. You have to have a valid drivers license to get hired. Then you have to have a permit at the airport as well.
Thank you both! yeah I’m a high school senior about to graduate in 2 weeks and I’m based in SFO and UA would hire high schoolers for the summer to be a ramp agent so my plan was to work there for the summer and maybe while I’m in college but I don’t have a permit or license yet at the moment

Alex DelReal it kind of depends. Maybe the larger airports people may specialize and pick their jobs. Since it’s less physical, more senior agents may choose it and you’ll be in the bagroom or the pit. I have never been “forced” to do it because there are enough people who are trained. I guess it depends on your airport. It’s not that hard though. Just stay cautious and focused, it should be fine either way.
