I can't really remember the Wii U advertisements, and I def wasn't alive during the NES/SNES ads. But marketing is one big thing to go with it. One part of the Wii U ads I saw showed the people playing games w the Wii controller and nunchuck. And even was doing so on the game-pad. Which made a lot believe that the Wii U was just a slightly upgraded console or that the game pad was an accessory to the Wii. Kinda think like, how the Xbox 360/PS3 consoles were. They were upgraded and changed over time, and those slight changes made them different but most didn't notice or know.

How they went about it, basically making it look like an accessory for the wii and the actual console was made to look like a wii with an HDMI rather than AV cables.

I started gaming a bit late when I was eleven in 2012. I got a Wii that doesn’t have the GameCube support for Christmas. I didn’t know that the Wii and Wii U were separate consoles at the time. My family was confused.

I feel like people go off on the sales alone when they judge the Wii U as a whole. While yes, the Wii U did sell bad because most people originally thought that it was just a tablet addon for the original Wii, and not an entirely new console, I feel like you can't only take the sales into account. The Wii U had an amazing library of games, neat features brought by its gamepad, and much more. I feel like the people who hate on the Wii U have never actually owned one themselves.

I still don't get the confusion, I was in elementary school when it came out and even I knew it wasn't an accessory... It is just like the gameboy line and the DS line. They just added extra to the original name (ex - gameboy -> gameboy color).
Its a combination of same name and reaaaally bad marketing by nintendo , only showing the game pad, same name, looks similar (same withe colorus). With the Gameboy it was different since having colour was a big thing, even if people thought it was the same it had colour wich was huge. After that "Gameboy" was like a base name, so Gameboy Advance was different from colour and Gameboy (whatever) was new. The problem is wii was a unique name, as gamecube, as nintendo 64, so wii U really felt like just the original wii, again a combination of few factors. Even Wii 2 had better chance.
I remember saving up too but wiiu new and it was on clearance by the time I had enough so I wound up with 21 games also on clearance and thinking Nintendo geez pulled a Sega they're so lucky the switch was a smash hit

People actually did, part of why many never upgraded, because they assumed it was a beefier version of their already purchased NES.
