The Airbus 330 sidestick.

  • All big modern passenger planes have fly by wire control systems. This means that there is no mechanical connection between the sidestick or yoke and the control surfaces.
    Digital electrical signals are sent to computers which move one or many control surfaces via hydraulic actuators, so the the desired response is obtained. It’s according to the ”flight control laws” and how this computer program is designed determines if the plane is responsive, stable, sluggish or whatever.
    I have a M.Sc in aeronautical engineering and I have a particular interest of this, including to explain for you how it works. Pls enjoy!

    Jesus this single video has finally answered the Boeing vs Airbus debate for me

    • @bjornpilot
      @bjornpilot  4 года назад +65

      Nathaniel Girma It’s a bit more complicated. The yoke is interconnected with the one on the other side and the sidestick is not, meaning that they don’t move simultaneously. So you really MUST communicate your actions or look at what the opposite pilot is doing with the stick, if you want to know. Otherwise you have NO idea in an Airbus. If you are aware of it it’s no problem and there are only big advantages with the sidestick. Indeed my personal opinion, but I respect others.

      @@bjornpilot May I ask, I've read somewhere that the Airbus flight dynamics respond exactly the same irrespective of flight parameters. Does the aircraft feel the same maneuvering at 30k feet and on Final?

    • @bjornpilot
      @bjornpilot  4 года назад +39

      Nathaniel Girma Good question but tricky to answer. It does not feel the same but feels like it should considering the speed and altitude. Meaning stiffer at the controls at high altitude and more responsive at lower, like just before landing. The flight control laws are such that all Airbus planes should feel the same, however I think that the A350 feels much more responsive and agile than A330/340. I have never flown the A320.

      CzechBoi Never said you can’t. I said that there aren’t that many Airbus fans making themselves heard. Don’t see much Airbus swag at the air shows. I know both the 320 (and the 330/340) and the 737 intimately and I can go point by point and compare them. But it’s not what most fans are about really - it’s emotional. Like with a football team - fans. You are not on the team, you don’t own the team, you pay to watch them play and yet you are crying and cheering with them like they were your own family. While in reality it’s a buisness that is there for the money - your money. It’s the same with this Airbus vs. Boeing thing. It’s a freaking airliner made to fly for money. The only relevant comparison is if it’s good at it. In that respect the 320 for example has a bunch of things going for it over the 737 and it’s more comfortable as a work environment. On a modern airliner you spend more time doing paperwork than handflying, that alone is a reason to get rid of the column. Not to mention the weight. So back to what you said: love whichever type you want, love all of them but keep in mind they don’t love you back. What Björn points out is that are the things that matter on a practical level. All of them come from a design philosophy ment to make operations safe, easy and efficient in an cold and objective sense. That is something almost nobody on youtube talks about. Airbus is the beneficiary of two extra decades of research and development in human-machine-interface that at least the 737 is not.

    To everyone talking about the banking of the plane (the ones who are serious about it) , that was a tiny bank... it was probably less than 5 degrees of bank and he did it smoothly, the passengers wouldn’t notice the difference if the autopilot turned the plane or the pilot. It would have been a normal turn.

    Har ofta tänkt på detta med att kontrollen sitter till vänster men när jag ser detta kom jag på att jag brukade spela bordtennis med vänster hand, bara som en utmaning i unga år. The A330 electrical system goes through 3 mains busses. If the generators were lost then the Ram Air Turbine would drive an emergency generator which would power the Essential bus which I I think powers 1x Primary computer and 1x secondary computer. If all the busses were damaged (unheard of) then the rudders and horizontal stabiliser are mechanically controlled and the engines can be used to help turn the plane too

    I could just see an airline pilot who is also a part time military pilot. Accidentally pulling the shoot trigger on their flight stick thinking they were going to use a PTT instead :)

    Great video! If you don't mind, I have some questions I've always wanted to ask an airbus pilot:
    1. Are the rudder controls also fly by wire?
    2. In flight, are roll movements from the side stick linked to the rudders, to keep the turn balanced?
    3. Do side sticks have feedback? Otherwise, how do you know if the plane is trimmed properly?
    4. For the demonstration you did, does it also apply to pitch? Eg, if you pitch up 10 degrees and let go, is the plane going to maintain the same pitch attitude? Will the auto throttle increase to maintain speed when this happens?
    5. Do the throttle levers move by themselves? Like Boeing?
    Thanks!

      1- Yes
      2- The fly by wire system is in charged of that
      3- You don't have feedback, the plane trims itself
      4- Yes it'll maintain the same pitch. Yes the auto throttle will increase speed
      5- They don't move

      1 yes,
      2 yes,
      3 there is no need for trimming since it’s done automatically. Set the attitude (pitch&bank) you like and the plane keeps it. The only time you trim (the rudder) is when you have an engine failure.
      4 yes, lift to 10 degrees pitch and it keeps it without further input.
      5 No, they do not move which is maybe controversial because you must look at the instruments to know what thrust you have. They set the max limit, like takeoff thrust, climb thrust etc. You get used to it. You can also disconnect autothrust and fly manual moving the throttles yourself, which is just like any other plane like Cessna or Piper. In fact manual/manual flying is absolutely awesome with this plane, for example in a visual approach or landing. 👌🏼😊

    Hi Bjorn,
    Loved the explanation of the Airbus Flight control laws. Makes a lot more sense now about the inputs that I put in during my desktop flight simulation sessions. Just has another question. Do most pilots generally have the Terrain shown on the ND of the PNF and WXR on the ND of the PF or is that just your personal preference?

    even if clearly it must be comfortable to have a stick on the side, don't you think that for a right handed having a stick on the left is a bit more awkward feeling that using a central yoke?
    EDIT: you answered it already few secs after I wrote this! Thanks!

    Hi Bjorn, I have a question. At 5:23, on the left display the speed indicator shows 250 knots, but on the right display it shows the plane has a GS and TAS of 460 knots. Which one is true and why this difference? Also the mach is 0.80, so again, a little bit of a speed difference there... I’m not a pilot but I really want to know why are these differences. Thanks in advance

      Felix Barac 250 is indicated and depends on the dynamic pressure. True airspeed eliminates the lower density of the air, at highter altitudes. GS takes the wind into acount. TAS plus or minus the wind gives GS.

    Hi Bjorn, great video as always! I'm curious if you could explain sidestick priority in the airbus since that is something important to the sidestick since I believe there is no mechanical linkage between them like you would see on a traditional yoke. On an unrelated topic I'd love to see a video on the A330's hydraulic systems. On the A320 only the YELLOW system has an electric pump so you need to start Engine 1 an activate the YELLOW electric pump to not have your HYD PTU run continuously if you do a single-engine taxi. Does the A330 have a HYD PTU, if so how does that affect single-engine taxi procedures? Thanks!

    • @tomstravels520
      @tomstravels520 4 года назад

      Not it doesn’t. The A330 hydraulic system still has 3 systems but....
      Green system is pressurised by both engines and has an electric pump that can operate manually or automatically. The RAT also pressurised the green system
      Blue system is pressurised by engine 1 only and has a manually controlled electric pump
      Yellow system is pressurised by engine 2 only and has an electric pump that can be manually or automatically controlled
