      Am I crazy that I think that gliders would be so much safer than any type of small plane
      Like if you really did the research on how to fly them properly I know if you do turns too tightly are probably other ways probably are other ways that it can become a very unsafe situation very quickly but as far as mechanical failure goes I feel like they would be much safer than old Cessna airplanes
      Are old small airplanes that did not make enough power because of the climate or the weather of the day and maybe that is pilot are because they didn't take off properly but still obviously you still have to get a toe up there so you're still relying on a pilot to catch you out there but I hope my line of logic is not totally unreasonable

    • @TheBranderCZ
      @TheBranderCZ 3 года назад +30

      @@lurk7967 ~would~ they are, the main reason being their glide performance ratio, where most of these mid-high end gliders get from 1:30 to 1:60 glide ratio. (from 1km altitude I can glide 30km distance), when an engine dies in a C152 or C172, you are pretty much looking straight down or not very far ahead for a field to land on. Also as a glider pilot and GA pilot myself, I can tell you that there is nothing more soothing than a silent aircraft where the only thing you hear is wind.

    • @devvytm
      @devvytm 3 года назад +3

      @@63bplumb I mean, if it was his first time it would have been far more dramatic (perhaps even making the news due to a crash or miracle landing cuz trainer blacks out or sumn) so yeah. Still, my congratulations is similar to why people clap after the pilots of their planes touch down safely. It's always nice to see someone landing smoothly be it a total noob or the creator of all aircrafts XD.

      I did a bit of gliding once, and we always took it very high on landing. I struggle to recall the height, but we would start our circuit at 1000 ft, and would usually be well over 500 ft by the time we turned onto the runway. Gliders have really good spoilers that make them drop like stones, so getting down to the runway is no problem whatsoever. The permise was that we didn't have engines, so if we were low and got stuck in sinking air, we couldn't climb out.
      Now I only had 20 hours, and it was a long time ago. I can only assume this pilot knows his stuff. But seeing this just irks me. I would have been a lot higher. Hell, I would have landed straight in from the 2 second mark.

      @@nkristianschmidt Down wind and crosswind imply the wind direction. You typically choose the runway so you are landing against the wind (up wind) which allows landing in the shortest distance and stops you without as much braking. To get to the place where you are flying upwind, you enter the rectangular traffic pattern on the downwind (opposite the landing direction). You fly that until you are past the end of the runway where you turn crosswind. Then when you are nearly lined up with the runway, you turn to "final" and descend to the runway.

      But its fucking impossible to overshoot you have very effective airbrakes. If thats not enough you can go for a dive and the resistance of the airbrakes increases squared to your speed so its even more effective. If thats not enough you can put down one wing and do a circular landing...

    I had this a few days ago too while turning to final, my yaw string was soaked and stuck to the canopy. All I saw was a dark line being the ground! Nice video to demonstrate what you should do while flying in the rain!

      And what should you do? Please explain your thougts. I would stay fast and focused. This pattern was too low for my gut instinct (based on my exp. with 1/37 gliders). It seems that Stefan didn't expect any sinking air.

    • @Tom-tm6bu
      @Tom-tm6bu 5 лет назад +1

      @@michaelderflinger5002 You should always gain more speed, like he did. Because of the droplets, the airfoil shape changes and is less aerodynamic, resulting in higher stall speed and faster decent. With the LS8(neo) you don't really have to worry about sinking too fast. But indeed always keep margins.
      I may be wrong but I am still a student who only has about 120 solo's

      Rain? Get some more airspeed. And yes, that will make a lot of noise, that's normal. And no, if you drop your nose, that does not mean you will follow that nose.
