To a landing pilot it's not a crowded flight deck. He has the same landing space that he would have if the carrier has NO planes on it. For the deck crew who has to spot the landing aircraft to a parking spot somewhere, the deck IS pretty damned crowded. A salute to ALL you Naval Aviation people, whether you're airborne or ground-based crew.

The F/A 18 has auto-pilot landing. It's so precise, they had to squelch it, or the tailhook would wear a hole in the flight deck, because it would land in the exact same spot, every time.
Pilots tend to turn it off, so they can get the thrill of landing.
Also, when they are on the cat, they have to show the flight deck their hands. The jet nav system is in control until the bird gets a short distance off the flight deck. If pilot doesn't take controls, the plane will circle the carrier, and until it is activated to land again.
They are NOTHING like the F-14. F-14 was 100% pilot operated. The F/A 18 is a manned drone...all it is.
