Been struggling lately with life, this is a timely reminder to apply stoic truths. I recently had a nervous breakdown with severe panic attacks, depression and the inability to deal with even minor stress...it was a sobering life lesson...still is....the concept of remembering death is coming has given me a new perspective and not take life to seriously. I tell myself "none of this will matter or even be remembered 20, 30, 40 years from now" and someday I will cease to even be on this planet.

Just live one moment at a time. Focus on that. That helps me. Don't ruminate about the past. Focus only on now. Be present in your life and make your moments as happy as you can. This has helped me immensely.

You should read the Islamic philosophers who translated the works of the Stoics that helped preserve them for us today. It’s amazing how universal the messages is.

@@igormargulis6302 Some of the most influential Islamic Philosophers were Avicenna, Alfarabius, and Averroes. Averroes wrote a great work called "The incoherence of the incoherence" which defends the validity of classical philosophy in an islamic context against the arguments of those who oppose it.

Thats why philosophy is true...where as religion clashes and isnt universal. Even the luck of our birth place or the era we're born in doesn't effect the truths of philosophy we feel in our very being to be true. I cant say the same for religion when i read religious texts. Alot of religious texts to me are messages and codes hidden to be deciphered and not neccarily to be taken litrally 😎👍 philosophy is a universal truth. Dark and light in us all and we need to put a leash on our primal instincts and urges and think before we act. We need to find balance and control within these primal emotions and instincts etc ☯️

@@Andy-B1984 interesting point, but I disagree.

@@igormargulis6302 Imam Ghazali synthesized a lot of the works from past Islamic scholars into many books. The best translations of his writing is done by a Cambridge professor in the UK named Timothy Winter/Abdul Hakim Murad. He also has lectures here in RUclips. My favorite Ghazali text is “On Disciplining the Soul: Breaking the 2 Desires.” In it he professes that is we as humans can control our younger/mouth and our private parts, we can ascend and become more enlightened people. Very thought provoking. Enjoy!

It was not until the 18th Century that anyone seriously started considering Chattel Slavery a bad thing. In other words slavery had been pretty much a fixture of all societies everywhere since the start of Civilization thousands of years ago. I do not think it is a valid argument for modern people to assess societies on the current social mores. IOW a Mayan Circa 1400 would be aghast at the horrible immorality of modern America where are the human sacrifices what kind of depraved people fail to see the necessity of human sacrifice and ritualized cruelty?

Woman definitely play a big role. However back then these guys were certainly no slouches! Marcus Aurelius was Emperor and spent a lot of his time on the fronts with his troops dealing in foreign relations. Seneca served as the number 1 advisor to Emperor Nero and basically ran the country behind the scenes for a time. Epictetus was a slave whose master worked in the palace. Definitely not lazy men! Hope this helps you feel better about approaching stoicism as anybody can get something from it!
