It always bothered me how Stoicism is now understood as a lack of or failure to communicate emotions. When reading ancient stoic literature you get the feeling that there guys were probably one of the most in touch with their emotions people out there.

    • @jonirischx8925

Yeah it's been made into a coping mechanism of intellectualization, which you use to suppress your uncomfortable thoughts, despair and depression. Usually in order to 'be strong' (masculinity) and to 'grind harder' (status, profit seeking). So its original meaning has been entirely commodified and distorted.
Almost all the people I've met irl who have been into stoicism, have also been pretty right-wing, and like really really reaaaaallly in need of therapy. They also get their views on stoicism from some sigma-male RUclipsrs...
My theory is, that even though you could make quite fruitful comparisons between stoicism and Buddhism, or Islam, or other Hellenic philosophies, the fact that in popular culture there's a strong association between stoicism and the Roman Empire, makes it attractive to white supremacists...

I have studied philosophy on a university level. I describe Stoicism as this.
“What happens in the way of nature is meant to happen by fate. All I can do is not affect my inner world.”
This is the best way I can explain it everyday certain things happen to us that we cannot change. All we can change is the way we react to something how we interpret certain things. And how we control our emotions for our betterment in life itself especially around the nature of pain and sorrow.
This is not! Having a blank face or having an attitude towards life where man hides his emotions dies inside and tries to look strong. If you ever read about stoicism these people were human they harmed themselves battled with depression laughed and felt sorrow. All they did was control it, control your inner world don’t let it wreak havoc on you.

    • @Cyberwar101

@@njkauto2394of course not. The stoics simply used logic to construct a way of life that has proven useful to countless people throughout the ages. • @Cyberwar101
      @Cyberwar101 11 месяцев назад +6

Grew up catholic. A few things about Christianity have consistently bothered me; the problem of evil. Why would a good God allow evil to exist in this world? Doesn't hell seem... evil. Like, no moral person would genuinely want anyone to be eternally tortured. The focus on sin and redeeming from sin. From a systemic perspective, it lacks a clear commitment to doing good, rather avoiding evil. When I got around to studying all this, I realized much of modern Christianity is confusing because it is actually a glued together collection of beliefs that mostly exist to further its own existance. Stoicism has much of the same ideas and ideals, yet none of the hypocrisy. In a sense, it is more pure than modern Christianity.

When you put you interest in something you see it everywhere. If you speak with someone about a Mercedes car for example later when outside your eyes will notice all the Mercedes cars and think of the chat you had about it with that person. Focus and attention went to that. And it's with everything like this. But you must be conscious to notice and to understand why instead of unconscious.

I recommend reading Meditations by Marcus Ariellius
One of my favorite quotes which I believe is the core of stoicism
    (I'm paraphrasing here)
"When I wake up in the morning I tell myself that I'm gonna deal with abrasive, ignorant, and rude individuals throughout my day but I will not let them affect me me because I have an understanding that they are like me a fragment of divinity like myself but unlike myself they do not understand this"

Excellent talk! Thank you for a very clear, concise & well-rounded discussion about the basics of Stoicism. Just what I needed to begin my own exploration of this philosophy. I’ll be looking into the books you’ve listed! BTW You REALLY caught my attention towards the end with your comparison to CBT, something l’ve had some experience with, but did not study when I did my master’s in counseling 40 odd years ago.

I've always been curious about people that have worked in psychological careers and fields over recent decades.
I feel that mental health understanding has gotten more robust and commonplace, especially recently (might have been one of the only good things to come from covid, that and ordering groceries from Walmart and not having to go inside). Anywho, I'm only in my mid 30s and a chemist so it's definitely not a huge focus in my field but it seems like it's getting better.
What is your take after being in the field so long? Is there really some kind of a psychological awakening or is that just wishful thinking?

At 14:33, it is actually quite easy to translate Logos into "the Word" because Logos functions just like Star Wars "the Force" but with a logical flavor. Since "the Force" emphasize on physical manipulation, "the Word" emphasize on mental manipulation. Let's map out some of the Jedi Force powers to Stoic Word power:
Force Awareness = Word Awareness: Realizing when other people are trying to manipulate you.
Jedi Mind Trick = Word Persuasian: Having the ability to use word to convince people to not sell death stick and rethink their life
Force Sheild = Word Loyalty: Being charismatic enough that people are willing to die for you.
Force Pull/Push = Word Command: You might not be able to perform telekenesis but you can still move things without touching by asking other people to do it for you. Heck, you can even move mountains or build the Panama Canals if your Word power is strong enough.
Force Healing = Word Theraphy: Having the ability to soothe other people's trauma or duress with the right choice of words.
Force Ghost = Word Ghost: Having the ability to leave an imprint of yourself in the real world after you have perish. Probably have to at least write a book or something equivalent.

Yup, it is actually pretty accurate to say that early Christianity was heavily influenced by stoicism, as well as many of the other hellenic philosophies of the day. The idea of heaven being not just a paradise but perfect and a oneness with god... sounds a lot like platonicism to me. Also pretty sure the 'holy spirit' was taken also from the stoics, though obviously renamed

Of all the stoics I have always loved Seneca the most. His most famous work is probably "de brevitate vitae" which is his most "Stoic" work, but I also love the "de otio" and his attempt to melt and justify the value and possibility of Epicureanism and thus a little hedonism in a virtous man's life. It is a very unique take quite different from the other stoics

Aristotelian logic is categorical and rooted in geometry. All men are mortal is a category and Socrates is a category within within it. Stoic logic is about time and space. If it's raining I'll stay home. If it is sunny I will go to the market. It's raining, therefore I'll stay home. It's a practical logic of choice in which a person can't do both.

I know they also influenced India too but youve already covered that in your Veda videos. It is very strange, even to the degree of being slightly unnerving that as I'm watching this video, largely by chance Ive come to realize I have been living the better part of 20years of my life very much in line with the Stoics philosophies and ethics. A great deal of whats presented here alligns with my own way of throught and style of living. All despite never being formally introduced in any way, read any books in regards to the matter or otherwise voluntarily or involuntarily been exposed to this subject matter. It's also a strangely connecting experience knowing people who lived thousands of years prior were sharing and teaching ideas I've lived with rather ignorantly.

I think there is a minor confusion in your explanation of academic skepticism. It seems that you are attributing the ideas of Pyrrhonic skepticism to the later Academics.
Pyrrhonism with authors like Sextus Empiricus, actually, propose that no truth can be obtained and, therefore, ataraxia is only obtained with the suspension of judgment (epoche). And also, a lot of discussions contained in the Pyrrhonic Outlines are purposely directed towards stoicism. Meanwhile, academic skepticism is more of a probabilistic nature.
Nevertheless, as you mention, it is a very wide subject that cannot be covered in a breif explanation. I only thought that it was an important distinction to be made.
I love your channel!! One of the best documented ones I've found on RUclips.
