  • I've had that Dead Rising 1 footage since about 2012 so bloody hell it was finally useful. This review does expect something of a familiarity with the series, particularly in gameplay and structure and as such is more comparative than my reviews usually are.
    You can tell what I had to re-record or add to the review because I sound near dead.

    in DR3's defense, the bosses in DR1 do become trivially easy to beat as soon as you beat Adam and get access to that sweet, sweet Small Chainsaw. good god is that thing unbalanced.

    • @Banshee523
      @Banshee523 2 года назад +38

      I think you need to ignore certain options in every DR game to make them more balanced, so I went into DR3 used to it. For DR1 it was the Small Chainsaw, for DR2 it was some of the most easily accessible combo weapons like the knife gloves, and for DR3 it's the weapon locker. So yeah, I sincerely don't think it's a fair point to knock on any of the games in the series for when they all have something extremely unbalanced about them. Some of this video just sounds like bias tbh.

      The best way to play DR1 is to avoid Adam's chainsaw otherwise everything becomes mostly redundant. Since there's no reason to ever take advantage of using impractical stuff because you need it since the chainsaw will always be the best option and last for as long as you need it especially if you pick up spares it sorta inadvertently kills DR1's novelty.

    • @baifomet6425
      @baifomet6425 10 месяцев назад +2

      I'm not against game breaking mechanics in videogames as long as they feel at least a bit earned, such as in DR1, since at least you had to defeat a somewhat difficult bos and take some extra steps by finding the three magazines that make the chainsaw even more op. How ever, DR3 just gives you away the ZAR that rivialize the little challenge the game had in the middle of the main story and that's it.

    More than 7 years later and it's such a huge missed opportunity that the list of Carlito's 50 infected orphans in DR1 doesn't match up in DR3. In DR1, orphan #14 was someone named Lisa Jackson.
    The easy cop out is "Carlito lied about his list" but I think it's just the writers/director weren't paying that close of attention to DR lore outside of the major things.

    I really like that the character you play as isn't some sort of super human that can do anything. You're just a normal guy trying to survive.
    Frank: Just a regular photojournalist with no prior experience in combat. Except that he covered wars, so he probably got some basic experience for firearms from that.
    Chuck: A dad, and a motorcross racer. He doesn't really have combat experience just like Frank, but he's really good at driving vehicles efficiently, especially motorbikes. Since he tinkers with vehicles, you can make the assumption that he's also has some experience being a mechanic like Nick, but not to a huge extent. And his handiness in making weapons came from there too.
    Nick: Just a normal, everyday mechanic who happens to be immune from the virus, and doesn't have much combat experience like the other two. His handiness far surpasses Chuck in that regard as he can make weapons on the fly without the need of a workbench. Since he's an experienced mechanic, he can even combine vehicles to make insane killer machines.
    Notice how none of them have military/police training and is just some regular survivor? Sure, Frank covers wars, but he wasn't directly involved in the army, so he doesn't have army training besides from the stuff he has covered.

    Just shows you how much more powerful you felt when it restricted your damage at the start until you found out where you could find the hard hitting melee weapons and guns, something I feel the later games missed the point with due to giving you beyond OP weapons right at the start and just getting easier from there.

    The more restrictive combat of DR1 and DR2 reminds me of what made Dark Souls 1 and 2 appealing and challenging. The attacks and movements of the player makes your character seem weak in comparison to the enemies that have more weighty or powerful movesets. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 subverted this by making the player movements a lot faster, but making the enemies faster in order to balance the difficulty, which also carried over to Elden Ring. This provides for some tense, and immensely satisfying gameplay.

    Im gonna be honest. Upon meeting gary and then playing through the game I was prepped up for Gary to be revealed to be Frank. They are similar looking, (and if Gary had brown eyes and slightly darker hair it would definitely have been something to really think about, though I don't doubt if Frank had to for some reason hide his identity, which I thought breaking into Phenotrans would have caused, he could easily find stuff to change those) and even have similar backgrounds (Frank is theorized to have been a big wrestler due to his moves, as well as Off the record appearance (not canon but still could have been a hint)). All gary needed was a camera and an outright reveal. Would have been pretty funny too, to see Chuck and Frank sticking together so long and Nick to be... well added to the family.
    The game was fun, and yes to easy but Nightmare mode really does help it, it does actually make some of the psychos harder to fight. While the gameplay did change, it feels good, Nick just feels really damn good to control.
    One of my biggest issues is clothing tbh, there really just isn't a lot of really good options to wear, especially with your only jean choices being skinny jeans and some practically white, dad jeans.

    8:42 I find this to be a particularly interesting point - it's an issue I had with this game despite being unable to place why exactly this is.
    It seems like they designed a lot of the bosses with having more of the DR2 style of gameplay in mind despite all the changes - I think that most of the psychos in this game, in particular Jherii, Darlene and Kenny would have been a lot more difficult with the DR2 style.
    Here though, they act way too slowly to keep up with the player characters actions, on top of not nearly dealing enough damage - IIRC the boss that dealt the most damage was Hemlock with some of his blows - and I've only seen him take out two blocks of health at most, which compared to the equivalent bosses in the previous two games is nothing.
    I was hoping DR4 would remedy that, combining all best aspects of the previous three entries, but we know what happened with that.

      If you pay attention you can find a bunch of inaccessible maintenance rooms with orange doors littered throughout the city. As well as save bathrooms. There's even a few you can clip the camera to see that there are rooms behind the doors that look just like the maintenance rooms from DR2.
      It's clear at some point in development the game played a lot more like DR1 and DR2... but they scrapped it for the weapons locker and all the convenience bullshit that ended up being one of the games biggest criticisms.

  • @aceoxofficial

    DR3 was my first Dead Rising game (basically because 1 and 2 as well as 3 are banned in my country (and I only got to play 3 because it was free for Xbox Live Gold members for a certain time and since the current gen consoles have no region locking, I was able to get it without having to go out of my way to buy foreign cash cards just so I can buy something from te international store)) and I honestly really liked it. It was fast, it was smooth. Sure it was easy and there wasn't a whole lot to do to be honest, but I had a ton of fun. Normally I absolutely HATE online play because I've got no one to play games with, so my only other option would be playing with randoms, and we all know what an annoying mess that can turn into. However, I met someone online who randomly joined my game who didn't hinder me in doing what I wanted, but also jumped in on his own whenever he felt like it and that's when I experienced how fun online co-op can be if you're not forced to stay close to each other and do the same things. Hell no, he went around for a couple of hours and did his thing, and I went around and collected everything I could find. Eventually we would meet up by random and slay some zombies together and collect some blueprints just so we would eventually split up again and do our own thing. This was so refreshing and fun that both he and I started to play regulary together, he helped me collect some of the harder to reach collectibles, I helped him mow down zombies to no end, eventually we conquered the story mode but things started to get going when we started talking even outside the game about what we want to do next as well as our hopes for the - at the time - upcoming Dead Rising 4.
    And when Dead Rising 4 came out... well... it ruined everything I experienced thus far just by being an absolute boring chore to play.
    Everything I liked about DR3 was gone and so was my interest in this game series.
    Of course since the rando I met in DR3 and I had nothing else to play, except this awful game that was DR4, the contact eventually broke off.
    I still wonder what he's doing at times.
    In short, Dead Rising 3 showed me how fun online co-op with a stranger can actually be if it's properly executed. It refreshed me during a time where I played so many games that I felt completely burnt out by giving me not only freedom in when and how I want to do something, it was also fast-paced and worked basically like a snack. Just quick easy-going fun.
    Then came Dead Rising 4 and it fucked all those experiences in the ass and actually made me quit gaming for quite some time. It was such a let-down.

I think he has a great character arc and all around he is a the definition of a nice and naive hero. The only thing that I disagree, to small extent mind you, is a map of the game. I think it gave it Escape from NY (LA) type of feel especially combined with synth music. The main character has to run around the city, meet weird people, and ultimately escape from it. I really feel that it was a right choice in terms of a sequel, but the execution is indeed lacking. Other than this, it was a fantastic review!

    I probably the few people that actually enjoyed dead rising 3 and yes,while the game was pretty easy,it still had the same things that make dead rising.The combo weapons which are just as good as dead rising 2's, survivors and you can even have them fight with you,the time limit and the psychopaths,unlike like dead rising 4 removing all of that. Dead rising 3 for me was the last dead rising game I enjoyed.

    I recently played DR3 for the PC & I’ve got to say, it’s better than I thought it would be
    As someone who’s played DR2 more times than I care to count, I really enjoyed it, granted some of the issues he brought up are valid, namely the horrible world map & occasional graphical glitches
    But my biggest complaint with series was fixed, leveling up is no longer a slog, it feels perfectly balanced and while the time limit was a bit too forgiving, you can always play on nightmare mode for the good old Dead Rising experience

    In worlds where you can prevent the zombie virus from overtaking you temporarily with medicine, why don’t they send the bitten on essentially suicide missions to do stuff normal people wouldn’t do? If an áreas to infested and there’s no way your not getting bitten, just send these guys. This is cruel but I feel it makes good sense for a story like this and gives interesting opportunities.

    I am definitely in the minority for this, but I actually prefer this one to the DR1. This is mainly because of 1's clunky gameplay, and because it was the fourth game I played. I don't have the option of playing on consoles (and still pissed off at Capcom for not having Case Zero or West for PC), and thus never got closer to the experience of Frank West than a Let's Play or a walkthrough, until the remaster for PC. I don't dislike 1, but personally, I enjoy playing this more than I enjoy that one.

    • @edjeil123
      @edjeil123 4 года назад +2

      I replayed DR1 after years of not touching it and damn was it's so clunky but damn was it so fun because the "japanese jank" actually adds to the difficulty and excitement to the game. I also liked the design, it's meant to be hard, it's meant not to be finished in one single play through. It's meant to punish you for not babysitting the dumb AI. Should it have needed a few extra polish? Absolutely! But I just love exploring finding ingredients for the mixer, mixing and matching some magazines and weapons. Switching to a western dev kinda lost the "Rogue-Lite" element to it. It still had it in DR2 but kinda lost it with DR:OTR with the auto-save feature.
      I'm all for modernization but Capcom Vancover definitely went overboard with losing the "Rogue-lite" elements of Dead Rising.

    • @SchazmenRassir
      @SchazmenRassir 4 года назад +1

      @@edjeil123 Agreed! DR2 was my first, and I still have the disk (complete with GFWL, ugh...) and while it's also still not as smooth as DR3, it's my favorite. OTR is a little over the top, but still has the same feel as DR2, so I like them both. Still, if I had to rank them based on how much I like playing them...
      1: Dead Rising 2
      2: Dead Rising 3
      3: Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
      4: Dead Rising 1
      5: Piece of Shit that pretends to be Dead Rising 4.

    • @Tehsnakerer
      @Tehsnakerer  2 года назад +6

      It depends on context, in a series which used challenge and for lack of a better term 'inconvenience' to satisfyingly structure its gameplay. Convenience takes away from the character of the experience while a lower challenge takes away from the tone of the gameplay. In Dead Rising's case I'd say a lower difficulty and more leniency isn't an improvement but taking away from the appeal that people who enjoyed the earlier games liked about it.

Every single psycho/boss encounter in 1 and 2 felt like a clunky chore that I beat by smashing my head against a wall repeatedly or exploiting the AI in some way. While regular zombies were mostly just set dressing that's only ever a problem in some of the worst escort missions to ever appear in video games.
