The outfit idea came from the rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist/lyricist Miku (the one with pig tails). She was a singer and had worked at a maid cafe in Japan (family friendly waitresses dressed as maids and will sing and dance) and she thought it would be fun to create a hard rock group that contrasts the cutesy maid image. She liked "the gap" between their image and their sound. This song is distinctly pop rock. Their diversity in rock though is quite extensive. any combination of rock, pop, metal and punk and they've done it.

Even more amazing is the consistency of their songwriting and performances. DOMINATION is always a good start for new listeners, but they also do ballads, acoustic, relentlessly driving hard rock, and everything in between. One of the first songs written (by the lead guitarist, Kanami) is called YOLO and it's an absolute gem. They also have a side project called Band-Maiko, where the dress up as, well, Maiko. A great song for that is Gion-Cho. Enjoy!

Miku Kaboto, the founder of Band-Maid, rhythm guitarist, and lyricist, had the idea of creating a 'gap' between the group's image (maid outfits) and their hard rock sound. If you listen to some of their interviews about their concerts, the band is amused at the crowd's reaction once they start playing. I hope this helps. when Miku (second vocalist/rhythm guitar/lyricist) started the band she was working as a maid at "at home cafe" in Akihabara Tokyo and she thought a band wearing cute outfits but playing heavy rock would be a great GAP (Japanese concept of being surprised by a contrast basically see the maids they look cute and sweet but they rock so hard) and now over the years the band have customized their costumes (battle armor) to better suit their personalities.
With Band Maid, I recommend you start from the beginning with their first song “Thrill”. Look, there are no weak Band Maid songs, That said the Maids are exponentially better with their newer material, but I recommend listening to their earlier material first. Band Maid is the best rock band going.
I'm an old-school (80's) rocker/metalhead, and Band-Maid is the first band in a very long time that gets me excited about music again. Here are some song suggestions: "Warning" (Official Video) "Domination" (Official LIVE) "Manners/Black Hole" (Official LIVE, includes TWO songs) "Play" (Official LIVE) "From Now On" (Official Video, Instrumental song. They have a few amazing instrumentals in their catalog) "Memorable" (Official Video. This one is a BALLAD. They were so blown away from the response they got during their 2022 US Tour, they wrote this love song to their fans.) Band-Maiko "Secret MAIKO Lips" (Official Video. One April Fool's they played a prank on their fans: They said they had changed their band name to Band-Maiko, and released (I think just two) videos. These are the only video's I'm aware of where they're not in Maid outfits. What they wore is traditional Geisha outfits. Very cool. There's no pressure in which song to pick next, because they are so CONSISTANTLY AWESOME, you can't make a bad choice.
A thing about the maid outfits, Nikki: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. So... my heart wants to unleash the hype, but honestly, the best thing you can do is just listen to them. They will earn the time on your channel. They're that good. They're excellent live, but also I love that in the newer live videos they're comfortable releasing "the real." If they make a mistake, it's right there for you to hear in the newer live videos. The icing on the cake, over and above how great the music is, is they're just wholesome AF.

The maid outfits are their "Fighting Clothes". The founder of the band, Kobato Miku, was working in a Maid Café, where the servers dress as Anime style maids and butlers. She liked her cute work outfit, and thought that there would be shock value to a hard rock band comprised of cute maids. For live performances they always wear their Fighting Clothes. It's rare, but they don't always perform as maids They did an online Acoustic Christmas concert for their fans where they all wore red and beige casual dress clothes. As an April Fools joke they reformed as Band-Maiko, a group of apprentice Geisha, or Maiko, and performed four of their songs as Japanese folk-metal with the lyrics rewritten in old Kyoto dialect. They made two music videos wearing traditional Geisha Kimono and make-up. They looked gorgeous.

Thank you for checking out the best, and most fun hard rock band in the world today. They are the best of all worlds, able to write catchy melodies that are enveloped in top tier musicianship and God level compositions. Their live shows are where they really explode though - and they are the most crowd interactive band you'll ever see. Their songs also tend to have this crazy ability to leave you feeling better than you did before the song. Having a bad day? Listen to the maids! Not joking! Their songs are not all the same either, and they genre hop constantly, even within the same song. They can rip your face off and then make you cry with a beautiful ballad. You can't go wrong with any of their 120 plus songs (they've been at this now for 10 years), but I'd recommend Domination Official LIVE (not the MV), for an example of their awesome skills and songwriting creativity, From Now On MV when you want your face ripped off, and Daydreaming for a beautiful power ballad. For some of their much more complex and proggy stuff, go with very recent songs like No God, and for their recent stuff that is at once catchy and complex, go with Influencer and Unleash!!!! The band was founded by Miku (rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist - red flower in her hair). Miku was a Jpop singer who ended up working in a "Maid cafe" -- a cosplay restaurant themed around maids who serve food, sing Jpop songs, dance, and cheer up the customers with cute magic spells. Miku took this act and added hard rock music to create "the gap": people see maids and expect cute Jpop and get hard rock instead. She found Kanami online -- the outstanding guitar soloist and also their talented composer -- who then invited Akane the drummer, who invited Misa the bassist. They realised that they needed a stronger rock singer for their hard rock sound, so they brought in Saiki as their lead vocalist and Miku demoted herself to second vocalist. Miku then took up the rhythm guitar, practised hard, and has become a competent rhythm guitarist, freeing up Kanami to play her solos. The band founder, Miku Kobato, had a failed career as a J-pop idol singer. After this attempt at music failed, she worked at a Maid Cafe as a day job. During this time she came up with the idea for a band that played in your face rock music contrasted with the cutsie maid outfits. This contrast is called "The Gap" and is a mental dissonance you get when what you're looking at doesn't quite jive with what you're hearing. It works in Japan because when Japanese see girls in maid outfits, they expect to hear bubble-gum, cutsie J-pop idol music, not hard rock. It was also a way to visually distinguish themselves, as the Japanese music market is heavily saturated with all-girl rock bands.

the outfit all started with Miku she is in to maid outfit's and pigeon's ;) she used to work on two maid cafe's then she was in a IDOL group dressed as maid's and she decided to make a rock band and learned to play the guitar and sing good. she work here ass off to do this and thx to one video. THRILL that was played on a face book group they made it.. that was there last video to be made and then it was suppose to be over. thankfully it became the brake thru they needed.. not within japan, all over the world.

In regards to why maids, the short answer is that the founder, Miku, worked at a maid cafe and was in an unsuccessful idol (singing dancing) group and had an idea to combine maid outfits with hard rock one day to capture the "gap moe" of the contrasting appearance and sound. She pitched it to her agency who helped recruit the band. A longer answer though is that they probably wouldn't be around today without the gimmick. When Band Maid started they were a pop/rock band with pop being a crowded genre and rock not being very popular (one of the first and longest running girl rock bands, Destrose, for example, never became commercially successful). Band Maid almost failed (and there were plans to rework it as a idol group with more dancing) except just in time Thrill went viral in the US. I do not think Thrill would have gone viral without the oddness of the maid outfits, and Thrill cemented their genre shift to hard rock.

While Band Maid play rock/hard rock, Lovebites play heavy metal inspired by the 80's classic metal bands. A good case can be made for Lovebites being the most musically talented metal band on the planet. They are all elite musicians with complete technical mastery over their instruments.

The outfit idea came from the rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist/lyricist Miku (the one with pig tails). She was a singer and had worked at a maid cafe in Japan (family friendly waitresses dressed as maids and will sing and dance) and she thought it would be fun to create a hard rock group that contrasts the cutesy maid image. She liked "the gap" between their image and their sound.
This song is distinctly pop rock. Their diversity in rock though is quite extensive. any combination of rock, pop, metal and punk and they've done it.

Even more amazing is the consistency of their songwriting and performances. DOMINATION is always a good start for new listeners, but they also do ballads, acoustic, relentlessly driving hard rock, and everything in between. One of the first songs written (by the lead guitarist, Kanami) is called YOLO and it's an absolute gem. They also have a side project called Band-Maiko, where the dress up as, well, Maiko. when Miku (second vocalist/rhythm guitar/lyricist) started the band she was working as a maid at "at home cafe" in Akihabara Tokyo and she thought a band wearing cute outfits but playing heavy rock would be a great GAP (Japanese concept of being surprised by a contrast basically see the maids they look cute and sweet but they rock so hard) and now over the years the band have customized their costumes (battle armor) to better suit their personalities.
With Band Maid, I recommend you start from the beginning with their first song “Thrill”. Look, there are no weak Band Maid songs, That said the Maids are exponentially better with their newer material, but I recommend listening to their earlier material first. Band Maid is the best rock band going.

A thing about the maid outfits, Nikki: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!
So... my heart wants to unleash the hype, but honestly, the best thing you can do is just listen to them. They will earn the time on your channel. They're that good. They're excellent live, but also I love that in the newer live videos they're comfortable releasing "the real." If they make a mistake, it's right there for you to hear in the newer live videos. The icing on the cake, over and above how great the music is, is they're just wholesome AF.

The maid outfits are their "Fighting Clothes". The founder of the band, Kobato Miku, was working in a Maid Café, where the servers dress as Anime style maids and butlers. She liked her cute work outfit, and thought that there would be shock value to a hard rock band comprised of cute maids. For live performances they always wear their Fighting Clothes.
It's rare, but they don't always perform as maids
They did an online Acoustic Christmas concert for their fans where they all wore red and beige casual dress clothes.
As an April Fools joke they reformed as Band-Maiko, a group of apprentice Geisha, or Maiko, and performed four of their songs as Japanese folk-metal with the lyrics rewritten in old Kyoto dialect. They made two music videos wearing traditional Geisha Kimono and make-up. They looked gorgeous.

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

Thank you for checking out the best, and most fun hard rock band in the world today. They are the best of all worlds, able to write catchy melodies that are enveloped in top tier musicianship and God level compositions. Their live shows are where they really explode though - and they are the most crowd interactive band you'll ever see. Their songs also tend to have this crazy ability to leave you feeling better than you did before the song. Having a bad day? Listen to the maids! Not joking! Their songs are not all the same either, and they genre hop constantly, even within the same song. They can rip your face off and then make you cry with a beautiful ballad. You can't go wrong with any of their 120 plus songs (they've been at this now for 10 years), but I'd recommend Domination Official LIVE (not the MV), for an example of their awesome skills and songwriting creativity, From Now On MV when you want your face ripped off, and Daydreaming for a beautiful power ballad. For some of their much more complex and proggy stuff, go with very recent songs like No God, and for their recent stuff that is at once catchy and complex, go with Influencer and Unleash!!!! I've recommended a lot of MV's here, but know that their live stuff is generally where it's at - they are phenomenal live. If you like them, act now to see them in the USA in May or August!!

The band was founded by Miku (rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist - red flower in her hair). Miku was a Jpop singer who ended up working in a "Maid cafe" -- a cosplay restaurant themed around maids who serve food, sing Jpop songs, dance, and cheer up the customers with cute magic spells. Miku took this act and added hard rock music to create "the gap": people see maids and expect cute Jpop and get hard rock instead. She found Kanami online -- the outstanding guitar soloist and also their talented composer -- who then invited Akane the drummer, who invited Misa the bassist. They realised that they needed a stronger rock singer for their hard rock sound, so they brought in Saiki as their lead vocalist and Miku demoted herself to second vocalist. Miku then took up the rhythm guitar, practised hard, and has become a competent rhythm guitarist, freeing up Kanami to play her solos. Misa, Akane, and Kanami are all professional musicians who have been playing instruments since they were children

The band founder, Miku Kobato, had a failed career as a J-pop idol singer. After this attempt at music failed, she worked at a Maid Cafe as a day job. During this time she came up with the idea for a band that played in your face rock music contrasted with the cutsie maid outfits. This contrast is called "The Gap" and is a mental dissonance you get when what you're looking at doesn't quite jive with what you're hearing. It works in Japan because when Japanese see girls in maid outfits, they expect to hear bubble-gum, cutsie J-pop idol music, not hard rock. It was also a way to visually distinguish themselves, as the Japanese music market is heavily saturated with all-girl rock bands.
The Netflix movie Kate had Band-Maid on playing this song. They are back in the US in May and then in August.

believe it or not - 10 years in for the MAIDS this year. started a bit slow in 2013 but really started gaining steam in 2014 and are an incredibly talented band of ladies. you will most likely love everything you hear from them with over 100 songs to check out. another japanese female band you need to see is LOVEBITES. they are more power and heavy metal than the hard rockin' MAIDS and are another extremely talented band of ladies that kick the crap out of just about any male band out there. There was a music channel back in the day called IMF. International music feed. Obviously they showcased bands and styles from all over the world. the outfit all started with Miku she is in to maid outfit's and pigeon's ;) she used to work on two maid cafe's then she was in a IDOL group dressed as maid's and she decided to make a rock band and learned to play the guitar and sing good. she work here ass off to do this and thx to one video. THRILL that was played on a face book group they made it.. that was there last video to be made and then it was suppose to be over. thankfully it became the brake thru they needed.. not within japan, all over the world.
Dice and BLOOMING are two other songs that most people like and even their earliest songs are still popular like FREEZER and SHAKE THAT. They have many songs including acoustic versions. Have you done NEMOPHILA yet? Try the live versions of Sorai and Oiran. 🇦🇺

In regards to why maids, the short answer is that the founder, Miku, worked at a maid cafe and was in an unsuccessful idol (singing dancing) group and had an idea to combine maid outfits with hard rock one day to capture the "gap moe" of the contrasting appearance and sound. She pitched it to her agency who helped recruit the band.
A longer answer though is that they probably wouldn't be around today without the gimmick. When Band Maid started they were a pop/rock band with pop being a crowded genre and rock not being very popular (one of the first and longest running girl rock bands, Destrose, for example, never became commercially successful). Band Maid almost failed (and there were plans to rework it as a idol group with more dancing) except just in time Thrill went viral in the US. I do not think Thrill would have gone viral without the oddness of the maid outfits, and Thrill cemented their genre shift to hard rock.
Nikki, Welcome to the rabbit-hole of Band Maid. We Maidiacs (we call ourselves that) don't refer to it as a pigeon-hole because this band can't be pigeon-holed. They are pan-Rock genre. They can play any kind of Rock sound. To get an understanding of their command and interactive ability with their fans, I would suggest you react to "Domination", the official live video. To understand their versatility, I would suggest reacting to "Manners/Black Hole", the official live video. Saiki's amazing voice and range are easily on display on "Wonderland", the official live video. The group does in-your-face instrumentals (to give Saiki's voice a rest) with "Onset", the official live video, and their most recent instrumental, "From Now On", the official music video. The group performs amazingly beautiful rock ballads, starting with "Daydreaming", the official music video. "About Us" is a live song to their fans (what band does that?) a lament on their inability to perform live due to Covid lockdowns and restrictions in Japan and the U.S.. Their most recent love song to their fans is "Memorable", the official live video. The song was written and performed after their most recent tour of several cities in the U. S. after Covid restrictions have been lifted. I'm an old man (75 years old) and have been around rock for a long time. I have never been so amazed and proud of five young women who are so professional, cohesive, and enthusiastic about what they do. From now on Band Maid will be a force in rock music. I'm a Maidiac for life and damned proud of it.
The LIVE version is even better! BAND-MAID is the best band in the world! But you need to check out their Official LIVE Videos. Otherwise you don't get the full BAND-MAID experience. Miku, Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vocals was the Founder. She used to work in a Maid Cafe'. She thought the idea of Maids being a Hard Rock band would be a cool contrast. It's called The Gap, between what they look like and what they sound like. Also, their name BAND-MAID is a play on BAND-AID brand bandages. They also have an Alter Ego persona as an April Fools Day joke where they mix in traditional Japanese instruments with their Rock and play in full Geisha gear called BAND-MAIKO.
The really amusing and interesting thing about Kanami (Lead Guitar) is that when she first started learning to play guitar....she did it so she could look cool TO OTHER GIRLS!

Now you‘ve done 3 out of my personal top 5. Nightwish, The Warning and Band Maid. Jinjer is in my Top 10, too. To complete it, i highly recommend Nemophila and LOVEBITES. Nemophila are high energy and a lot of fun, their new single Rise as first song. LOVEBITES are top Level guitar shredding and simply the perfect metal band in many ways. Start with their song stand and deliver.
The Japanese doesn't seem to bother fans,l. Their great, Miku worked at a MAID Cafe and thought it would be a great contrast to be in a hard rock band but wear MAID costumes, they are very talented

Looks like you've discovered the Japanese all-female hard rock scene. I strongly encourage you to next check out Lovebites, another Japanese all-metal band. While Band Maid play rock/hard rock, Lovebites play heavy metal inspired by the 80's classic metal bands. A good case can be made for Lovebites being the most musically talented metal band on the planet. They are all elite musicians with complete technical mastery over their instruments.
