Bob, as a former (as in decades ago) band teacher myself, let me assure you that a deep dive into this band's ten year catalogue of over 120 songs will not go unrewarded. This is relatively early in their career, and as time passed, the catchy hooks stayed and everything else went up through the roof. The complexity of their music now is astounding (try virtually any song - that's how good they are), but they somehow still kept that "feel good" magic that you no doubt noticed on this song. Their songwriting ability approaches Lennon/McCartney quality, and stylistically/genre-wise they can and do play anything - often touching upon 3 or more genres in one song. You need to check out some of their live stuff (Domination Live from their channel, or the livestream they did of No God) as just a couple of examples. For a master class in songwriting, try the Blooming MV, and for a kick butt instrumental try their new track From Now On - MV. There are so many great songs - and they will grow on you, and as you listen to the same songs (especially their later material) you'll hear new stuff even after the 100th listen, and you know that's a good sign. They can also do simple beautiful songs - although usually when you listen hard you'll find out that while the melody may be simple, the bass or drums or especially lead guitar are often doing complex stuff in the background that creates that re-listenable characteristic. I'm usually into hard bop, prog and classic rock - or reggae - but these ladies caught me off guard and expanded my horizons. Enjoy!

"Choose Me" -- a song featured in the Netflix original movie "KATE" as BAND MAID, has so many great RnR chops, it's kinda unbelievable. From Saiki's old-school phrasing, cadence and a super soulful vocal at the end; MISA's driving bass, her special riff after Kanami's brilliant, rocking main solo (complete with harmonic pinch), and her pulls at the end of the song that really funks it up with Akane's drumming; to Kanami's original composition, off-beat octave stretches during the verses, and her addition of a second uncomplicated yet super tasty solo; to Akane's unique snare & tom flurry that launches the choruses; and to Miku's octave-down, in & out vocal backup and lyrics... all makes "Choose Me" a throwback rocker that surprised me when I first heard it - and I'll bet most anyone - that they would come up with this western-style, rock 'n roll classic.
Of course, after years later, it's not surprising at all coming from this important band of geniuses who are almost single-handedly bringing back the joys and soulfulness of rock for people from all places and ages to hear. Here's a great live MV of "Choose Me" that's not quite as punchy do to the mix, but still good: ruclips.net/video/HcqitbXgigU/видео.html Thx, Bob!

Welcome aboard, Bob. You are embarking on (along with many others - 164 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (124 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ruclips.net/video/7LB_EPS48HE/видео.html)
And many songs are represented with over 45 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ruclips.net/video/nAdWnIRjGak/видео.html

 “P and D²” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:

 By Vladimir Chupin - a wealth of excellent videos at www.youtube.com/@VladimirChupin
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2022 US tour just wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!!

It's because she loves to sing rhythmically which limits her range. In this fashion, Miku-chan (red rose) is able to harmonize with her perfectly. Now that Saiki-san can easily sing high, their songs are even more difficult to sing. lol, not that it wasn't already difficult before, with that almost-rapping melodies.

I'm a bit of a drum guy, and for me Akane Hirose (drummer) is my No.1 drummer...Ever!...Her style of play, her creativity, power, and grace behind such a small kit blows my mind. And all with a beautiful Smile...The lady is class...As are all of BAND-MAID...So much more than just the music...They brought joy to my broken heart...and been a light in my darkness (lost partner to cancer)... Long May They Reign!.

I'd recommend their latest MV (an instrumental) "From Now On," as you'll be wearing a large grin after hearing it. "Choose Me" was featured in the Netflix movie "Kate" (along with their song "Blooming.") Hope you react to more songs by these incredible artists.

Excellent review sir. You have a very interesting channel. Welcome to Band Maid the best Hard Rock band (not metal) that comes from Japan. This ladies are a masters in musicianship and songwriting but, for me, their forte are the live performances. They combine charisma and stage presence in a invigorating way. If you want to take another ride I suggest their song Blooming where you could enjoy again that combination of vocals, drums and bass/guitars in a higher and more complex version. Thank you!

Welcome to Band Maid! They are queens of hard rock music as you have now heard. I have great news, this isn’t a one off amazing song, pretty much everything they write (and except their early stuff, they do also write it) is amazing and only getting better. Additionally, they can play it as good, and often better, live. I saw them in concert in October with my own eyes and ears and it was literally awesome.
So, that’s my recommendation, watch the official live videos for Domination and Play to get a real feel for the band. Don’t worry, the audio quality on their official live videos is so good you could mistake it for studio recordings (don’t worry, it’s actually live)

believe it or not this is year 10 for the MAIDS. all with the same members. there are a few commenters out there who think that they suck and they have every right to their opinion. they may just not like the style being played but to say they suck is anything but true. lead guitarist kanami is a great guitarist and writes most of the music since about 2015 and she taught rythym guitarist and backup singer miku to play guitar starting in 2014 so they would have a fuller sound. now miku is more than adequate. bassist misa and drummer akane are both outstanding musicians and the whole thing comes together with saiki's great lead vocals. there are well over 100 songs to check out from them and you may want to have a look at the song 'dice' to see amazing change ups throughout the song. here is the link :ruclips.net/video/ZpAYnVJX9CY/видео.html

BAND-MAID is the first group I found when I started actively looking for new music to listen to. They were a gateway to LOVEBITES, Babymetal, Unlucky Morpheus, Asterism, Wagakki Band, Nemophila, and so many others in Japan and around the world. The skill of Kanami Tono (lead guitar), MISA (bass), and Akane Hirose (drums) is off the charts and Sakai Atsumi (vocals) is a fantastic singer. The fifth member, founder Miku Kobato (vocals, rhythm guitar), couldn't play guitar when she had the idea for the band. In their first video, "Thrill," she more or less dances around her old Rickenbacker while looking cute and waiting to sing. Akane taught her to play, and Miku worked hard to become a solid guitarist. Miku is their primary lyricist, though Saiki has been writing more as well.

Welcome to the Pigeonhole. Pretty much any which way you go in the rock genre, these girls can do. You really cant go wrong just diving into their catalogue and picking songs at random. And live, they are just as good, if not better. I had the pleasure of seeing them live last year and it was the most amazing show I have ever gone too. They are so involved with the crowd. There are so many songs to choose from. If you are looking for more of a bluesy/rock style check out Manners. More of a prog/math rock style, Black Hole. There is actually a video where they do both songs back to back, and I think it was to show their range. One of my personal favorites is Daydreaming, it's a ballad, but in my opinion, one of Kanami's best solos. But seriously, you cant go wrong with anything they do. Their latest instrumental From Now On is magical, and they even did an acoustic concert showcasing another side to them.

For many people, myself included, having stumbled upon BAND-MAID at one time or another has been the greatest musical event they have known in a very long time.
This band is an inexhaustible source of top class music, their creativity is only within the reach of ...., nothing, of themselves.
They have been playing for 10 years now, at first playing songs composed for themselves, but in a couple of years they managed to get a song they created themselves admitted, "Alone" is their title, and from then on practically everything they have released is their own invention, both lyrics and music and arrangements.
All their songs are different, but from all of them you will draw the same conclusion, that they are great songs, on their RUclips channel they have forty or so videos, some in studio, others live, plus almost all their songs, more than 100 in audio mode, material to enjoy for a long time.

Great reaction! You definitely get this band happy to see that you caught on to the fun stuff they add in to keep it interesting. For them though this song is small beans. One of my favorites but not the most complex. They really excel in composition and adding in genres to their rock sound. Controlled chaos is a good way to describe it. Riding that line but somehow it's still catchy in a lot of their songs at least. It's not always crazy but it's always good you can't go wrong with Band Maid I'd love to see more reactions to them on your channel well done sir!

Hi Bob. So glad you are starting your journey down the Band-Maid rabbit hole. Buckle up lol! They are at the top of my not only my favourite Japanese bands but any band anywhere list. I think you picked a good song to start with. They do embody what R&R is but they don’t let themselves be stuck there. I’m sure someone will give you their history and how the maid concept came about. I do suggest you watch their live videos because they can match or even outdo the “official” music videos. I can give you more info on them if you wish. Cheers! Great reaction again my friend. 😀👍

This was truly beyond awesomeness song, when they played it at the end of the Tokyo Theatre Garden concert on the 9th Jan. Saiki started without accompaniment, goosebumps time, I heard it done but before in London 2019.
    Next stop Dice.

i think most people forget that a well placed guitar solo in a song can make or break a song, Kanami has mastered the art of giving a 30 second guitar solo and leave you wanting more of as she dives back into the main part of the song. Prime example of it would be the solo she drops in daydreaming sort of comes out of left field and goes the way of right field when shes done with it.

Three of these ladies (lead guitar, bass, drums) are trained musicians, the lead guitarist is the main composer and classically trained on the piano. They really come together to make a unique sound. The lead singer and rhythm guitarist have trained extensively in voice and instruments to get to where they are integral parts of the overall band. A great band IMO.

You ain't seen nothin' yet! Yshould do one of their Official LIVE videos. They really shine LIVE! True, they do play to backing tracks. But, once the drummer, Akane, locks into them there's no throwing her off. The other band members will go up on her riser and make faces at her to make her laugh and try, but no chance. You can see a good example of this in 'Domination' LIVE.

Well Bob, welcome to the Loyal Order of the Maidiacs. They have so much great music in store for you. Their musicianship is so spectacular it defies description. I'm 75 and have been listening to rock since the late 1950's and they are among the finest I've ever listened to. The drummer is Akane Hirose a/k/aGorilla, the bassist is Misa Misa Misa (you aways have repeat it 3 times, lol) a/k/a The Barefoot Assassin, the lead guitarist Kanami Tono a/k/a Kanamincho, or "shorty", lol. She is also a musical savant on the order of Brian Wilson. The rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato, is a small pigeon, as well as the groups founder and lyricist. The lead singer is Saiki Atsumi a/k/a The Fashionista, who has an incredible rock-style voice. They work so well together that it seems that they are in touch mentally. They have a great rapport with their fans all over the world, and are the best at getting the crowd to act like cheerleaders. Just an all around great group that checks all the boxes.
