    Back in the old days heavy topspin hitters like Courier, Muster, Krickstein, Perez Roldan etc they all had their racket facing down on their forehand. Moreover: the racket facing down was the starting point of their forehand swing so it was even more extreme as a concept. Thanks for the tip then!

    Thanks. I've been trying for several years to stop opening my racquet face to the side, just as you describe. As is often the case it's quite hard to get rid of old habits, especially when you're playing points and moving quickly. I'll try these progressions...

      Chris Chan try this out, I found out that this is the easiest way by far to correct that bad habit as the face of the racket is fully closed on the backswing. Let us know if it worked!

    I actually found this out 'by accident' couple of years ago. I have a full western grip and was hiting with a pro kennex racket with the weight in the top, like the wilson hammer rackets. I suddenly did this with the backswing, my racket face facing the ground, and I was absolutely crushing the bal with maybe 50 % more topspin I estimate. But because I changed some more things at that time and wasn't doing it on purpose I didn't keep on doing it. So I thought it was the power racket that made the ball jump of the court now I know how I did it..

    My forehand improved with my racquet facing down thanks. My Pro told me to have my butt of the racquet pointing towards the opposite Court but I didn't catch my racket wasn't facing down. I was hitting much better forehands immediately after transition.

    Right we're on the same page that you're doing it in small progressions and I like the fact you have a semicircular loop and that you've closed the racket face on the take back and now you're closing in a contact son so that you can come over the ball and that applies that overspend topspin

    Thanks for sharing. Good video. I will share my humble thoughts as ex coach but sadly it didnt pay as much as IT. I get the feeling I would add to make this work adjusting timing for earlier preparation and relaxing core and shoulder so the racket comes down pulling from weight transfer, hip rotation .. etc. loading more energy into join rotation in shoulder not just in elbow rotation as rackets goes down. Watch where elbow points when racket is low. Nadal would show more of elbow to opponent probably indicating loose shoulder and better weight transfer. Also weight not going forward but sideways weight transfer due to open stance with that grip. I understand it is a drill to demonstrate but looks stiff. I wouldn't "master" that. I would focus on timing (the tough part) loading energy coming from legs letting shoulder and elbow rotate clockwise before racket starts rising up. Not saying I dont agree, just part 2 to make it work

    This is a brilliant tip, I struggled for ages trying to stop the ball from sailing long with top spin with nothing helping at all, until I found this.
    Effortless top spin. Every time the ball comes to me now all I think is racket face down and somehow pull off so much topspin with this.

    Tried this today--hit almost every ball into the bottom of the net:( I'm not opening my wrist (as instructed) keeping it in the same position and as a result the racquet is at a 15 degree or so angle at contact. Is the whole arm and forearm supposed to turn up to meet the ball? Put another way, is the face closed at contact? What angle would you say? Thank you! I want this to work as it seems to be the pathway to topspin.

    The biomechanical solution for this is to make sure to keep your pronation muscles relaxed during the backswing.

    This video is a perfect example of how you need to be careful in who and what you watch online as far as tennis instruction. Depending on where you are in your development ....this could quite possibly hurt you more than it helps you. When perfecting ANY stroke, I feel as though these key positions people talk about can cause more harm then good. I try to look at the forehand similar to a free throw in basketball, it's about repeating the same thing over and over trying to synch. your timing at contact. But if you aren't using the body at all in the swing, these positions aren't going to help your shots at all. I would ALWAYS recommend progressions when trying to break down a stroke from improvement. Start with contact out at the 45• angle. Slowly progressing your backswing.

    I used to break my wristle the head is not always looking the net but slightly the ground and when hit the ball it gets not that high above the net but with enough spin i think. When i start with no break my wristle with head looking at my left side i tend to do that: when it is about the raquet to hit the ball i usually give her more height cause im sure anyway it will be in will not be that fast but i earn time to rest between points or to make it difficult for easy players. If i want to play agressive i tend to break my wristle and when it is about a cross court hit i also tend to play above head... I think a play a typical forehand like the one on video if i want to finish the ball down the line or close to the net cause i think its less complicated and more safe and dont have to think too much. I also play above head when run to the corner and want to play straight ahead cause that saves time.

    Well if you're looking at the top five topspin forehands in the pro game today they have a closed face a bit arm and they keep it in tight and close to the body lot of them hit in a semi open stance due to the fact maybe they have better balance and stability

    Right and that's a big improvement the minute you start closing that face that puts you up in the top 10% of the big hitters with the four hands that open racket face a does not enable you to apply and heavy top spin because as you know what's critical really it's not only getting your body weight behind the shot which is the course the kinetic chain but it's also the wrist snap and rack ahead speed rocket speed is the essence of making the ball go faster

    You need to have good swing fundamentals for this....The Result, straight arm on contact with the ball now allows the elbow (forearm) to pronate the racquet which results in alot more tighter spin when driving it all flat using the normal finish and with using the reverse finish, the result is faster dipping spin that hops the ball quickly over the net. The faster it can hop the ball over the net the more I can open up the court. the less time opponents will have to try to run the ball down. I like the new change.

      Great question! The natural turn of the forearm will make the racket open and help get more topspin on the ball. This is why is really important to stay relaxed, if you are not, this movement might be harder. I hope this helped!

    Right and he's in a semi Western grip meaning that if you're going to get into a semi-western grip you place your racket on the ground and then just go ahead and pick that up and that should put your hand underneath a little bit which puts you into a semi-western grip this is what Nadal uses because he hits heavy top spin more so than the other tennis players

    You're missing key elements in this to get what you really want which is a heavy ball. The stroke starts at the ground and works up through the body in a kinetic chain. The racket face down is merely a result of getting this chain started at the ground level. Keep working though, you can see in your later strokes some of that coming into play.

      Joel This is correct, and I'll add on if your not using your body correctly this won't work, the reason you see this position from a lot of pros is they are getting great leverage over the ball in MANY shots you actually won't always see this position on a higher ball.

      Merely turning the racket face down works instantly because it triggers more action on the wrist which increase topspin. The wrist helps the racket head to get below the ball and turning the doorknob(action of the wrist turning the racket like a windshield).

      No, we don't turn the racket like a doorknob over the ball to spin or drive it. That is not correct. At the advanced level we use the Forearm bome to do all the spin and driving..

      Everything is conditional. No one wants to watch 3 hour videos of all the scenarios that a modern forehand would be applicable including receiving low balls, out wide, transition, inclusive of the 9 most common footwork patterns. The majority of instructors that preach kinetic chain are those that teach tennis like it is golf. It has its' place however it is all about context. If I'm coaching a junior on how to hit an on the run forehand, kinetic chain does not enter the conversation. If I'm coaching a transition scenario, kinetic chain doesn't enter the conversation. Go to any top level D1 match and document how many different conditions, footwork patterns in which they are hitting their forehands over the course of match including one foot pivots, two foot pivots, step downs, drop step, open stance, neutral stance, reverse finish etc. I highly doubt the take away will be..."oh wow these guys use the kinetic chain very efficiently".

    Right that means you want to close that racket face in other words I'm going to take back you'll notice that the doll has it facing towards the ground on the backswing as this begins the semicircular loop pattern that you desire once the racket comes around and makes contact you'll notice that the racket is approaching more vertical but I would recommend something quite different as you noticed lately that joke of it has been beating the doll on clay that has never happened before by anyone in apparently Djokovic with two hands is starting to catch on about how to take out high heavy tops been hitters in other words he's using a flatter shot with a little less top spin and he's hitting it like and our children shell right into the deep corners and what this does is it pushes back on the doll and give him less time to get set up to hit all this top spin which is taking about 50% of his energy but the unfortunate thing is Jimmy Connors if you take note was feeding the crap out of boring pork in the early years because he loved that high tops been shot and he could hit really hit through with that flat shot and penetrate deep into the corners

    Well at least we're on the same page you have a little bit of difference there in your style style and style you know no style there are situations like you don't have time to take a semicircular loop you'll have to take it straight back depends on what court surface you're playing on great you're playing on clay slow when you're on a fast Court like grass or fast hard courts not going to have time to even do semicircular loop unless you're standing clear back at the fence so this is where you have to be flexible you're going to have to be able to think in terms of what is important and it isn't important how you take your racket back with this loop and all this it's secondary to what balance and contact zone so in other words what's important to you is not a priority that's the problem is you're placing other things in front of the actual priority and so therefore your watering down your technique because the Constitution focus should be on the most important line item the contact zone

    Right having that racket face open on the take back is is definitely has to be changed immediately that has your arm must be bent and you must close that rocket face so it's pointing towards the ground this and change will put you into this semi-loop pattern that is effective to hit heavy top spin The Open face does not work at all that's the first thing you got to trash that's what all the instructors are teaching take the racket straight back have it open hit through the ball finish high but those guys finish last in a group of in a 10 people that finished 2 and 10 you know what I mean the top guys are steppy graph was good I can see hit the s*** out of it the doll Sean

    Right once you get those bad habits in grained now it's difficult to break them and that's why I start out with footwork before I would start this lesson because once you get your footwork all screwed up your foundation it's like building a house with a crappy foundation and you're making a four bedroom house so you know the whole thing is going to fall down because you're only as strong as your base of support does that make sense you're only as a house is only as strong as it's foundation I mean how can I let's go on Jesus said the cornerstone I am your cornerstone you know let's just go on all day long that's why that clothes stance maybe it'll work 3% of the time you might be able to step in a couple times but I guarantee you if I stepped on the court I wouldn't let you hit it all day long I'd have you moving so much that you either learn my footwork you're going to get your ass kicked sick so because I'm taking you off that Court bro and I'm going to cover those positions and I'm going to hit one of those things I'm coming in and I'm going to volley and I'm going to get you in some bad position and then I'm going to take you out and that's it so I mean I I didn't doing very successful in my teaching people just pouring money out to me anytime I want it okay and there's a reason being it's cuz they see improvement and they see results rest these people

    Yeah whatever you know that's just you know they called that just a whatever makes you comfortable type technique I mean there's many ways to take the racket back different schools have you taken across your face like you're doing there the next school doesn't do that at all the basically the only thing that really matters is the contact point and contact point is where you want to hit through the ball and that's what the top players even if the old days were doing they're really getting down low wide base and really hitting through the ball now if you're not doing that I'm really pushing that Palm through the say four tennis balls pick a coat hanger right straight you're not really getting hitting through the contact zone which is which is key because if you're not hitting through the contact zone you're not hitting the ball and that Palm has to go through that contact sound so but when you're hitting top spin only a glimpse of the racket is coming over the ball so it's like a flash of light it's the rack it's not hitting it flush like you're hitting a flat ball this is where there's my teaching differentiates everybody else's is that

    These are not bad drills but putting too much focus on top spin ground strokes on faster courts will be a liability. Heavy toppin is more a weapon on clay courts.

    Well as you know there are many different types of instructors and everybody's teaching a different methodology which they claim is the best in the world but when you test yourself against the computer you will soon find out that stepping into the ball can be a severe disaster especially against the computer tennis player who has the ability to make you change direction rapidly and put you into emergency situation you'll notice that you're getting beat 60 every time you try to step in you're getting demolished now you're starting to think what is wrong with my game I'm doing everything I've been taught to do but it's not working so now you have to if you want results and you're tired of getting beat sick so all day long you're going to have to change something and let me just start out with the footwork which let's let some of these instructors show you how we move across back and forth across the court and up and back and footwork is essential as it is the groundwork to getting to the ball striking the ball good balance center of gravity and everything else that goes into a good stance which sets us up for hitting a great shot with the upper body but the upper body is usually motionless it's not moving a lot and a lot of schools neither is they are but in some schools we produce racqueted speed through arm movement but not a whole lot because we restrict the back swing because a lot of times we don't have time to hit fastballs with a long take back it's not necessary to take the racket that far back in these instances

    del Potro is very flat, he don't normally hit with topspin...he has the most powerful forehand though
