I wouldn’t really consider it as underrated. However it unfortunately went through a scenario where critics were being critics. I actually consider Hercules as one of the best animated films from the 1990’s.
Kind of ironic that in most versions of Greek mythology in media they make Hades the bad guy or the Greek equivalent of the devil, when in the original myths Hades is actually one of the better gods in the whole pantheon.
@@voidpickle5684 I can see why some people wouldn't be happy with Disney changing the stories just to be more kid-friendly but it made them money so it's not like they would think about the morality of the situation
Chill Player 123 It’s not about when they were made, it’s about their performance. The Renaissance was a time when the studio had a lot of hits (either good or phenomenal).
I love Hercules ,it's a fun movie. I love Meg's sass and James Woods nails it as Hades. Fighting Hades in kingdom hearts is usually a pretty good fight too and he's gonna be back in kingdom hearts 3.
@@ישיבושירה it was actually not received super well when it came out, and many reviewers doing nostalgia reviews post 2010 said "It was toneally all over the place and mashed too many different elements that didn't work together like gospel, new York, Vegas, animation style" etc.
For me, my biggest problem with the movie is the fact that it can't seem to decide whether it's a comedy or a drama. Some parts, it's obvious Musker and Clements are repeating what they did in Aladdin, with the modern references and slapstick, but taking it up to eleven. Then you have this really heavy stuff like Meg being Hades' slave, Herc getting his powers taken away, etc. At least the dramatic moments in Aladdin actually fit well. That said, I agree Hades is the best character in the film.
Oh loved this movie, it's one of the first that got me into Greek mythology, and pop music. Also I especially loved Meg voice actor, especially in later years she becomes Rose Quartz in Steven Universe
I love this movie, Meg is one of my favorite Disney girls and Hades is hilarious. Phil also makes me laugh, I remember losing my shit as a little kid when he imitated Zeus reading Hercules a bedtime story XD
Speaking of artwork, one of my animation teachers actually showed my class some concept drawings for the film, including one of Hades as a noble figure. Kind of makes me wonder what would've happened if Hades was more like his original counterpart. Also, "Disney managed to control Zeus' hormones." HA!
Personally speaking I enjoy Herc as a character. He's obviously the Clark Kent type, wanting to do the right thing and being a dork at times, but his arc here really works. After letting his ego cloud his judgement of why he saves people, he finds peace with his feelings for Meg, but when challenged by Phil that she's not what he needs, he snaps because of his extreme feelings as a Rookie. And even in the end where his world falls apart, he finds in him the ability to defeat a GIANT CYCLOPS WITH HIS WITS AND SOME ROPE. Honestly I just really like how his motivations aren't just do the right thing, but him being challenged is the catalyst for Hades taking advantage of him.
Hercules was the first Disney Movie I ever saw in theaters. I remember making Hercules Muscles whenever my mom took pictures and I danced every time I saw the Hercules Parade in Disney when they did specific parades for their films.
It's also worth noting that James Wood would go on to play Lex Luthor in the short-lived Justice League Action and, in one episode, goes on to become Zeus for a moment with the same intentions that his character, Hades, did in Dosney's Hercules. So he went from being Hades in a Disney movie to Zeus (basically) in a Warner Brothers animation TV show

I've seen a few of your videos, and I must say, your reviews are awesome. You sound like you know what you're talking about, and unlike other reviewers, you aren't cruel or mean spirited (unlike others I've seen). Most importantly though, you get to the point, and really seem to embrace the 'less is more' idea. I'm sure you have your preferences, but you're fair in your assessment and you don't feel the need to insult others for what they like.
Awesome review Animat! I also like how you went from reviewing one film with heavenly realms in it like All adobe Go To Heaven to another one like Hercules. Such perfection, for sure! Anyway, looking forward to the next review!

While I will admit that Disney's Hercules isn't one of my favorite films, I will admit it's a bit of a guilty pleasures, since I'm an absolute sucker towards anything based on Greek Myth.
Hercules is my fav Disney movie. the songs were awesome, the characters were funny especially hades, I enjoyed it as much as many people would have. 9/10.
There were two ways that I knew about Hercules back in my childhood. One was the live action television project starring Kevin Sorbo and Lucy Lawless. The other was this animation project from Disney. I feel somewhat happy to say that I enjoyed the Disney movie more. First of all, the live action project looked boring, and I could not understand what was going on. But when I watched the Disney movie, things got easier to understand, and I was genuinely entertained. In fact, when I had to do a school project about Greek mythology, I chose Hercules specifically. I had THAT much memory of Hercules. And I can easily guess that Disney was responsible for my choice. So, I guess I do like Hercules. But as much as I did not enjoy the live action project, I am starting to gain appreciation for Lucy Lawless, and I am starting to get curious about the project's cartoon movie: The Battle of Mount Olympus.
I just love Hercules and hope to god Animat would soon give Grandma got run over by a reindeer the animat seal of garbage along with the Emoji Movie soon!
This film is so underrated. It's probably the most overlooked of the 90s Era.
For me,I would point it to Cats Don't Dance
I don’t like it because they made hades the bad guy and it’s also incredibly inaccurate to actual greek mythology
Not underrated but still pretty good

true
We’re almost complete with the 2nd half of the Disney Renaissance. We just need to wait for Mulan and Tarzan.

Agreed
but james woods is the mayor of quahog not a director

An 8/10 is great. Its not a bad rating, that means the movie is enjoyable and have a lot a quality.
