American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns are genuinely my favorite retelling of the Alice in Wonderland story. Looking forward to Alice: Asylum when American McGee hopefully eventually finishes it.

@@nova9731 If I remember the situation correctly - it's a complete mess, something like AMcG owns the rights to the game but EA owns the rights to the publishing and distribution of the franchise. So EA can't make any more games in the series without involving AMcG and have to pay AMcG a % on every sale of the existing games, and AMcG can't publish anything in the series any other way than through EA. He can theoretically make a game, but he will not be able to sell it without EA lawyers descending on him like a school of piranha.

This game has been my hyperfixation since I was just 7-8 ish years old. It was an absolute fucking incredible. The way that it represents trauma, mental illness, and unhealthy coping mechanisms is wonderful and hows that some things simple are too difficult to change, and the fact that not everything can remain as sunshine and rainbows. The trauma through the game progressively gets worse as she uncovers the truth of what happened to her family. Unrepressed memories don't always help us. We may finally have answers, but it can make us feel so much worse. It's just a wonderful game nonetheless, and I'm overjoyed about the fact that it's getting more recognition. Especially since a new game is in the makes!

I think there was supposed to be something for every level; Walrus and Carpenter was looking like a fight as well, and there was concept art of a Queen Wasp and something evil doll related. I don't remember what was up with the ice world though.

I adore this game. It’s platforming and action is simple but effective but the art design is fantastic. The thing that sticks with me to this day is the crying statues at the start that slowly gets corrupted when you approach the corpse of the jabberwocky that you killed in the first game. Also fun fact originally the plan was to have that be a mech fight against mouse and rabbit but due to budget constraints it was cut
I remember the extreme relief I had at 7 when I realized I wouldn't have to fight the huge mech-monster

I actually have him to thank for introducing me to this game. I saw him play it and I was like “this game is amazing!” I then went to search for it at GameStop. I eventually found it, bought it, and now it’s one of my top favorite games

I don't know, I think both make sense in their own way. The Disney Alice was the wonderland of a girl with no trauma to confront, a healthy mind. McGee's wonderland takes place in a very damaged mind, hence the darker tone

Because ive been trying to download/pirate this game for last year and everytime it just start chrashing 1 hour in or its in god damn russian and you cant change the language
@@stiropol319 I downloaded a pirate versión from skidrow codex and it works fine, I completed the game at least 5 times XD and it never crashed, maybe your drivers arent up to date, like net Framework, directX, and the c++ libraries, its a lot of stuff that can make this old games crash or not even start.
One sad thing: EA has screwed this series quite a few times. Not only have they refused to either let American McGee make his third game with more creative controlor let the IP go back to him so that he can do it himself, for this game too, they rushed the process, which is why there are no boss fight except for one in this game
there are so many great things in this game artistically and technically, the hair physics, the cloth physics, the liquid shaders and physics, the art direction, its absolutely amazing.
This game meant so much to me as a kid!! Played it with my dad constantly, now I have a tattoo of the vorpal blade to always remember :)

Fun fact! Disney does not own Alice in Wonderland IP, they don't own many of their IPs. Alice in Wonderland is public domain. Anybody can make stuff based on it, as long as they put their own spin on it and don't base their designs on Disney's.
i do remember the game. it's biggest downside for me was the length of the levels. they kinda overstay their welcome. But the game is still great and disturbing. I would highly suggest you to finish it on you own time if you don't want to make a video out of it.
Edit: also the Hair, while looking kinda strange now, was something very special back then. I can't even remember a single game with hair physics on that level from that time.

After years of knowing about the game I got a chance to play it last year on the xbox pass and I gotta say the game holds up really well! I knew it was one of the prettiest games in its year but dang, the hair, the colours, the style it still looks super good.
Right?! I’ve played this game many times through, and the lengthy levels are probably its biggest turn off. They’re about double the length they need to be.
I actually feel differently, after completing this game over and over for years the chapters seem short to me. I usually complete each in an hour or less.
I remember being so blown away by the hair, id spend large chunks of time just running in circles and watching it swish around :) good times
I really hopes he continues with this game, as he hasn't even gotten to the best part yet.

This game will always be my favorite, it’s very close to my heart along with Bioshock and Spyro. My first con (last year) I went as Alice! I will definitely be her again, felt like a dream. Looking forward to Asylum. ♥️

What I love the most about this game is that it works perfectly as a standalone. I played this one first and expected to be confused about everything, but the fact that it’s Alice in Wonderland means that you come in expecting to be thrown off. And the chaotic/confusing nature of the base story means that any little questions left unanswered can be excused. They introduce you to the story perfectly. They establish that she’s gone mad from her trauma and that’s really all you need to know. You get that’s she been there before and you can see the impact she had, but you don’t need to be explained every little thing.
Eventually, I played the first game after and it was amazing which made me appreciate Madness Return’s as a sequel all the more. I cannot wait for the third game that’s supposed to be in works.
As this is one of my favorite games of all time, I'd love to see you continue it! Your good humor really brings it up in a light I'm not used to 😅

Never played the game myself but I have seen a lot about it so I know a fair bit about it like someone who has played it and honestly love how crazy the story is and how far they went through with the dark things along with some of the easter eggs but I just realize this is the sequel don’t know if you knew that but just thought I would say it in case you didn’t
I remember this all too well! I remember crying for this shit because I don't have a console to play this game and forced me to watch youtubers to play it. This was one of the stories in the book sale pile where the store should've charged it higher because Its an absolute MASTERPIECE!!!

Man I remember when I was like 10 in BestBuy with my dad and I was in the video game section looking at the gaming magazines when I saw a section dedicated do Alice madness returns and I was so hyped because I loved creepy macabre stuff, those sailor moon dress-up games, and astrology and I loved Alice in wonderland so the mashup of these was like heaven to me I think a year later we were in BestBuy again and I asked dad if he could get me the one that came with the first game and the DLC weapons and dresses and I had such fun time with the game tho I was never able to beat the original b4 my ps3 broke 💔 seriously what a big brained move to have dresses that fit the area you're in and have astrological symbols that thematically fitted with the part of the story or the character it represents

Glad you like it Kev, American McGee's Alice series is one of my favourites, I do hope you finish it in your own time it's quite fun, also madness returns is a sequel, first game is VERY dated and janky these days but it's still enjoyable, the thing about madness returns is that it's VERY hand holdy, the first game was way more difficult, you needed to pay attention to find stuff and it was completely possible to straight up MISS weapons as they don't hand them out like candy in this game... would recommend the OG game, I believe it should have come with madness returns and you can access it on the main menu?
This game changed my life back in 2011 and I've played it many times since then. I loved the style so much I started obsessing over Tim Burton and changed my style completely. I've flipped through the art book so many times, the creativity is phenomenal! I hope Asylum will be released one day...
I remember playing this game only 3 years ago on EA pass thing. And i instantly fell in love with it. Holy shit It's so unique and twisted It's beautiful.
I must've played this game AT LEAST 10 times from beginning to end. This was my first game (I had played other games before on the PS2 and the PS3, but they all belonged to my brother. Alice Madness Returns was my first own game) and it still is one of my favorite games. The story, the characters, the music, the quality of animation, the fighting system, everything is just great.
He didn't reach the doll town, which is much more freaky and disturbing than what was in this Video.

I only started gaming in my adulthood. This and lollipop chainsaw are the games that made me love games on xbox360. Before that i thought games were either Nintendo games/Counter strike-call of duty kind of games/sports games. Thanks to Alice:madness returns i discovered how fun and interesting games can be with a great narrative and that made me discover more games with great stories and unique universes.
This game and American McGee's Alice take special place in my heart, bcos Alice in Wonderland was the first book i ever read. Ah, me at 5yo. That was a good time.

Picked the game up during the Halloween Steam sale. What excellent timing that was!
Thought the game was somewhat mid at times, but on chapter 4 it turned from a 6 into a 9/10. Really pickd up the pace and creepiness. Art design was so good, Bloodborne wishes it looked like this!!
And chapter 5 was extremely tight on atmosphere, felt like I was on some of Scarecrows nightmare drugs^^ Short but clean endboss and satisfying conclusion.
Combat somewhat stiff and clunky and locking on targets is weird, but weapons are fun to use and enemies need different tactics to defeat (until teapot canon at least).
All around 8/10, and I think I'll enjoy it even more if I'd proper analyse the "lore". I should've probably played the first game before that lol :)
This was one of the games I always loved to watch my older sister play back then. It was probably one of the reasons I fell in love with more gory/horror type games in the forst place, and I love the way Wonderland looks. The music brings back such nostalgia.

Gameplay is serviceable but the lack of boss fights hurts this game a lot. Artstyle and atmosphere however are top shelf quality. Also mad hatter dress = best dress
Love this game! First game I ever actually bought dlc for, ah yes remember non predatory dlc’s for Microsoft points? My kids now play this every now and then on my old 360, this and Eternal Sonata are both such overlooked gems of the era.
And the third game has been canceled and the developer gave up on gaming industry
they have the whole game bible almost finished (350 pages) of the full story, gameplay mechanics, character design etc. But they need to find someone to invest in it because EA isn't currently interested in funding it. Mcgee doesn't want microtransactions and EA is more focused on multi-player games. The best way to get the next game made is to raise public interest in it.
This game has a crazy and awesome story but I have to say, the gameplay is pretty outdated, other than that the story was trippy.

@@Kevduit yeah for sure, it definitely has a lot of potential I know too many remakes of games already exist but this could be a good one or as you said if they make another one, I feel like the game could be darker and more brutal. Still an interesting gem of a game. You should check out grabbed by the ghoulies on Xbox if you've never played it it's definitely an older one but pretty good idk if you've ever made a vid about it yet would be cool tho since you like to check out older games just make sure you say I suggested it ;) 😂
Honestly having read the book and seen the animated movie I can see the universe going in a darker direction.
My mom was obsessed with this game, funny enough, so I always watched her play it when I was younger!
I hunted down the art book in English because it's rare to come across and those selling it sell it for insane prices due to it never going into print again BUT I did find it going for £90 which was the lowest I could get. Super gorgeous book though, and one of my favourite games ever

i actually bought and played this game on release. it's a wonderfully weird platforming action game that doesnt overstay its welcome but isnt so short that it feels like you wasted your time. definitely has alot of creativity in it.
Lol, here's my story. Loooong before owning a laptop, I saw a strange little beauty sitting on a Best Buy shelf priced at $20: American McGee's Alice. I bought that sucker and patiently waited 8 YEARS before finally being able to play it, the Only game on PC I ever bought. And played I did, over and over for several years until Madness Returns was announced. That was one of the very few games I ever pre-ordered, and it's only bonus was a digital soundtrack I couldn't download at the time. But it was worth it. The best was the digital code included to download the first game, play both through one disc with a controller instead of a keyboard. Hands down, one of the greatest series. I get Madness Returns, while smoother in combat, was very minimal in true fights. But visually, hard to beat that masterpiece. Both had so much going, I'm foaming for 3. Ok, ready to watch the video now.

I even have the soundtrack & it frequently cycles in to what I'm listening to, which is mostly metal (the heavier the better, Slaughter to Prevail, Infant Annihilator etc.) with a smattering of classical & Irish pub songs sprinkled in.

This game was so good. Still one of my all time favorite games.
I love alice so so much. I rewatch the movies all the time and when I hallucinate its stuff from the movies. So madness returns was naturally an amazing game for me. When I was younger I remember playing it and staring at the screen listening to the music while talking to my Cheshire cat plush from the cartoon.
I remember seeing a ad for it on the very end of the gameformer magazine and just being like this looks awesome I’ll buy this when I’m older. Then I forgot about it and then remembered it because I put it on my sticky note wishlist. But it’s my favorite franchise I played both the original and sequel. As well as bought my own vorpal blade, the art book and am making my own Alice doll and an eyepot.

Oh my god I’m so glad this series is finally getting the recognition it deserves, it’s an absolute masterpiece!! The only gripe I ever had with the game though were the fucked up camera angles, but that’s just a me thing
