  • I had a few people ask me how I liked my new Seymour Duncan - Mag Mic Acoustic Pickup so I decided to make a video showcasing the pickup at various settings during strumming, finger-picking, percussive finger style playing, and so forth. I hope this video is helpful to anyone interested in possibly getting one of these. I think it's a great pickup.

    This is so helpful! Thanks for being so thorough with each element. That bottom end is pretty impressive without overwhelming the general sound and vibe of your guitar.

    Been looking through 4 different reviews now, and came to this. Thanks for the clarity! Great and really organised review video!

    Ive been researching pickups to use with my new Collings OM1A; watching many demo videos. I wish they were all done this well! Thank you

    The mag mic is awesome. I just got my Luther to install it on my Tanglewood TW55 NS. The sound is so rich. No piezo quack. Very warm. I would definitely recommend this pick up. So much better then the pick up that came with the guitar which had sliders for bass treble and middle. Thanks for your demo. Great video.

    Wow! Great demo. You sold me. I just ordered one for my OM style guitar. Hoping it will sound good through the Baggs Session DI!

    The demo was set up nicely but it was kind of annoying that half the strings were muted during the "strumming"

      Thank you for the feedback, Crimshaw. I will remember that for future reviews. #KeepPlayingGuitar

    i converted my takamine to a dobro and used this pickup. Love it. just gotta lower the gain on the mic when using overdrive for less feedback.

    Thanks for the demo. Think I'm gonna get this, sounds similar to the Baggs Anthem but with no piezo to spoil the acoustic tone.

    I installed one of these in an early 1970's Ovation 12-string acoustic/electric that has a single volume and tone knob stacked together. I really like the tone now instead of the Ovation system. I seem to favor the magnetic pickup with very little, if any, mic added. I play the guitar into an amp modeler and then directly into the PA. I notice a little feedback when I start turning the mic up. This is the same setup I use for my electric Epiphone Casino. If I was playing just acoustic direct into the PA I would probably want to turn the mic up, but I'm trying to simplify my setup. I perform as a one man band with bass pedals, harmonicas, (2) drum machines and a vocal harmonizer. It's really a lot of equiptment for one guy to lug around, but I want to perform (all live) and not use recorded backup tracks. Anyway, I really like this pickup and want to get another one for my 6 string Ovation. I feel the magnetic pickup adds more body to the tone than the built in system they put in these guitars.

    Absolutely my favourite stand-alone acoustic pickup system ... better than any Baggs or Fishman stuff.

    Nice playing but I was hoping to hear a simple G, C, Em, D chord strummed out.

    the best demo till now, thanks, do you have the black angel by dimarzio??? it worth it and works with percussion alone without any other pick up??

      I have it, you need to add a mic pickup to get a natural sound, Dimarzio alone sounds electric

    Hi there, great tone. Is it possible to have separated outputs? Magnetic on one channel and mic on a separate channel?

    • @TonyMurnahan
      @TonyMurnahan  7 лет назад

      Carlo De Vivo MusiContent great idea, but not possible that I am aware of. someone with more knowledge of it's design and a good understanding of electronics could probably make that happen through some modifications, but not possible the way it comes from the factory.

      @carlodevivomusicontent2138 7 лет назад

      ok thanks a lot for the reply. With separated outputs it would of been possible to have a higher mic volume on stage before feedback by eq-ing the signal separately. as it is not possible I think that perhaps if you are lucky on stage at high volumes, you can have up to 30% of mic signal blended in. not enough probably for percussion style guitar. anyway thanks a lot and i still think it's a great pickup. i have to decide between this pickup and the rare earth blend.

      The 2 signals are summed at the input jack, can be separated with knowledge of wiring and soldering skills!

    Definitely sounds best with the mic at 100% ... any issues with feedback with the mic at 100%?

      Unfortunately I cannot comment on that in the live sense. I have only used it in studio recording. Sorry.

    Tony, the harmonics are unreal! What's the trick to recording into your computer and getting such a dynamic and realistic sound? What components are you using to record? Great review!

    • @TonyMurnahan
      @TonyMurnahan  7 лет назад

      In this video, I'm recording straight into a PreSonus Audiobox. I didn't do anything special to the audio. The pickup is pretty dynamic especially with the mic blended in. Thank you for watching.

      Oh - as far as I understand, the magnetic part of this pickup-system cannot pick up the sound of any nylon(!) strings. So, in my opinion, it does not make too much sense using this one in a classic guitar.

    • @TonyMurnahan
      @TonyMurnahan  7 лет назад

      The mic would still pick up the sound from the sound hole but you indeed would not benefit from the magnetic pickup using nylon strings. So, you could use this for the mic, but you can probably find more effective systems to amplify a classical guitar not centered around a magnetic pickup.

    I just put one in a 2016 Martin HD 28 and it sounds awful. I bought an LR Baggs Anthem system in this guitar and it sounded awful. It had originally a K&K Pure Mini and that sounded awful too. I'm almost to the point of being heartbroken and broke. My b string is super super loud I've adjusted the pole pieces. Next I'm going to try some ghs white bronze strings. But my hope is just about gone. Seriously I'm almost contemplating selling this guitar.

      Man... sorry to hear that. Do you really think it is just the guitar? What kind of woods does that guitar use?

    • @TonyMurnahan

      Have you ever tried a Trance Amulet M with an outboard preamp if needed? Fishman Matrix is another good option. Maybe take it into a music store and explain your issue. Maybe they would be willing to let you test out a number of various pickups?

    For fucks sake why can't someone review these things by strumming a 145 chord progression? Sorry nothing against this guitarist but 99% of vids on acoustic pick ups seem to be showing off chops rather than something neutral enough that you can tell how the bloody pick up works. OK deep breaths. Sorry.
