@MrArielK it actually depends. If you can prove that you attained those emails voluntarily it's not a considered illegal. If in this story the husband and wife have free range of eachothers phones/computers and know each others passwords it wouldn't be illegal and can be used in the court of law. However if the wife could prove that those emails were obtained by force then yes OP would have done something illegal
