He's 16 or 17 yrs old here. Initially, he was lumped in with guys like Fabian and Pat Boone as a wholesome alternative to Elvis and black R&B performers. Ricky was a "safe" teen idol. Yet, the kid could flat-out sing which resulted in his having a cross-over male audience that lesser talented teen idols couldn't get. Young aspiring musicians like Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Fogarty considered themselves fans. Even Elvis was a fan. He's in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame for good reasons.
Bob Dylan also a fan. Ricky gave Elvis a run for his money. People forget that because Ricky had such a clean cut image. In reality he was quite a womanizer.
Story goes, guys like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings et al would all wait nervously for his next big hit. All eyes were on him back then. Totally agree with your comments, spot on!
Fabian was a teen idol like Ricky Nelson. He was 3 years younger than Nelson and was approached by a producer because of his looks but initially turned the offer down because he thought that he couldn't sing. He changed his mind after his father's heart attack forced him to be the breadwinner in the family when he was still 16 years old. He eventually bought out his contract and turned to acting because he didn't like the music business. Boone was aimed at an older audience but Fabian was promoted strictly for teenagers...his song, "Turn Me Loose", a contender for Elvis' audience, was as good as a lot of Nelson's songs...
@nomiclas I quoted Orbison but grew up watching Ricky on TV b4 he ever sang. He was learning his craft when he cut his first 45, "I'm Walkin," a fairly primitive rendition of Fats Domino' s hit. But Ricky learned fast, & soon had a pretty cool grove & solid vocal licks. I first bought his records in '57. When he cut "Teenage Idol," (7/62) he was 22 years old) & a solid performer. He married in 1963. Two of my favorties: "Stood Up," & "Believe What You Say." Joel Selvin wrote a fine bio.
Rick Nelson is my 6th cousin. My aunt Joy got to meet him backstage when he came home to Ohio. She saw him in Dayton. My Elisabeth Hillard were first cousins. Love him and his music.
this is the year i was born i loved him in the 60's when i was old enough to listen to my sister's records still love him and his songs today R.I.P Ricky you were taken from us too young but your music will live on forever for me
In those days the TV was in the living room and Mom and Dad sat on the couch and I was on the floor ( don't sit too close to the TV you'll ruin your eyes!!) Ricky and David, My Three Sons, I Love Lucy, Topper, Ed Sullivan, The Twilight Zone, Amos and Andy, were some of my favorite shows. And whan I was older, Johnny Carson was the last person I saw before I fell asleep. It was a very good time and I guess it is now too, I just don't watch too much TV.
He was about 17 here, and I was born- well if it was October lol! He was great and so smooth- pushed in many ways by family I had the honor of writing about his "comeback" with Garden party- He and Elvis helped launch my professional writing career... sad he and John Denver both died in a plane crash-making a comeback.. I agreee Natashs, he was under rated as an artist.
I never really thought of Ricky Nelson talented as an entertainer or a singer, but more of a personality. He was just another one of those pretty white boys on television. His TV series did well and was a monster hit, and I say again he was very good looking. His singing and repertoire is just not engaging enough. His death shocked millions of his fans the world over, and to this day he will be sorely missed.
Last friday my son and I stopped at a very small country country store and sitting on a bench out front drinking a beer was a young man that was the spitting image of Ricky Nelson and I could tell he was a farmer.while my son went in to buy a couple of beers I started talking with him and he was a very nice person, I wanted to say to him that you look like Ricky Nelson butI decided not to, thats the reason why I looked up Ricky tonight
I grew up with Ricky and David watching " Ozzie and Harriet " and the Nelsons. Ricky had a lot of great tunes and hits.. HOWEVER, let this for the Everly Brothers. None better imho.. Ricky still gets a thumbs up.........
Talk about a summit meeting! One of the premier solo artists of the 20th century in tandem with one of the premier vocal quartets of the 20th century. A prelude of the greatness which followed. RIP Rick Nelson and the Four Preps' Ed Cobb.
I do love the Everly Brothers, but I'm a devout fan of Ricky Nelson. I wish I were born in the '50s instead of '92. Awesome music. :D Really love Freddie Mercury more for singing these in concerts and familiarizing me with this music.
Bye bye love Bye bye happiness Hello loneliness I think i' m gonna cry Bye bye love Bye bye sweet caress Hello emptiness I feel like I could die Bye bye, my love, goodbye There goes my baby with someone new She sure is happy, I sure am blue She was my baby 'til he stepped in Goodbye to romance that might have been Bye-bye love Bye-bye happiness Hello loneliness I think I'm gonna cry Bye bye, love Bye bye, sweet caress Hello emptiness I feel like I could die Bye-bye my love goodbye I'm through with romance, I'm through with love I'm through with counting the stars above And here's the reason that I'm so free My lovin' baby is through with me Bye-bye love Bye-bye happiness Hello loneliness I think I'm gonna cry Bye bye love Bye bye sweet caress Hello emptiness I feel like I could die Bye-bye, my love, goodbye Bye-bye, my love, goodbye Bye-bye, my love, goodbye Bye-bye, my love, goodbye
I liked the 4 Preps too. 26miles Across the Sea was my favorite. I liked Big Man too. Incidentally, the old guy introducing the boys was one of the detectives in the next years film noir "The Lineup"
It's nice to hear another version of this song. I always thought the Everly Brothers had the only version but obviously not. Very nice very enjoyable x
im sick of pretty much everyone in the comments saying ricky was angry depressed sad annoyed he was about 16~17 here he might have been a bit nervous also maybe he was acting a bit sad because what the song is about I love ricky nelson rest in peace eric hillard nelson 1940~1985 45 he was still so young I love ricky nelson always xxxxxxx
I believe the blond lady in this clip was actress Constance Harper. She later played the role of David Nelson's secretary on the series and was the Nelson's actual secretary. She worked in their Burbank office answering fan mail. She also was the second wife of Ozzie's younger brother Don Nelson who was a writer on the show.
Ricky first sang on his parents' TV show in the spring of 1957 he covered Fat's Domino's "I'm Walkin." The Everly Brothers' Bye Bye Love" first charted at about the same time. Ricky is backed here by the Four Preps in an Ozzie and Harriet episode that aired a bit later in 1957. (Not 1956)
Roy Orbison (whose immobile style of singing, Nelson seemed to mimic at this early stage of his career) once commented to his fellow Sun Records artists that "Ricky Nelson learned how to sing while producing million-selling records." Nelson's fresh good looks & weekly TV show made him an instant rock 'n roll star even before he learned his craft, but he did eventually produce some memorable recordings. At this time, his theme song seemed to be his hit record, "Teenage Idol."
The crowd is so cruel. They don't listen at all. He sings the saddest stuff and they just clap and grin. Assholes. Nelson: "I feel like I could die" Crowd: " Yeah!" (enthusiastic clapping)
Hands down...Rick was one of the best looking guys ever to walk this earth. 🥴
I Agree. RICKY WAS SO FINE!!! ❤
HE WAS SO HANDSOME AND SO TALENTED!! IT IS A TRAGEDY THAT GOD TOOK HIM TOO SOON!! 😢
Counterpoint: Nathan Fillion
I knew a woman that knew Rickie Nelson and she said he had the most perfect skin that she had ever seen …. Male or female!! 👍🏻👍🏻😊☮️
i'm 24 but i sure wish these songs can be played more regularly now.... truly awe inspiring music... i've finally found all his hits
He's 16 or 17 yrs old here. Initially, he was lumped in with guys like Fabian and Pat Boone as a wholesome alternative to Elvis and black R&B performers. Ricky was a "safe" teen idol. I'd like to see The Four Preps get there, too! "26 Mile," "Big Man," "Money For You and Me."
Actually, one of the founders of rock and roll ...
Rock and roll was only two or so years old in 1957... this guy can be included as a founder with the best of them.
so catchy! 50s and 60s will always be my favorite
I remember watching the t v show as a young girl l fell in love
I'll always remember seeing him when I was 5....my aunt ran me up, put me on stage and Ricky kissed me on the cheek.
+Tammy Bruner How sweet! Great story. :)

who would dislike this?!
there's always a ricky nelson song you can relate to.
@nomiclas I quoted Orbison but grew up watching Ricky on TV b4 he ever sang. He was learning his craft when he cut his first 45, "I'm Walkin," a fairly primitive rendition of Fats Domino' s hit. How great 👍 ❤😊
Rick Nelson is my 6th cousin. My aunt Joy got to meet him backstage when he came home to Ohio. She saw him in Dayton. My Elisabeth Hillard were first cousins. Love him and his music.
what a great voice. In that age, the tunes were really catchy, and the lyrics were true poems.

Still enjoying the clip in 2023.

Ricky is love by many with or without his existence in the world 💖

heart. melting.
so, handsome. Young men just don't look like that anymore. What a shame I missed out on this era.
Talk about a summit meeting! One of the premier solo artists of the 20th century in tandem with one of the premier vocal quartets of the 20th century. A prelude of the greatness which followed. RIP Rick Nelson and the Four Preps' Ed Cobb.
Still Listening In 2023
Ricky was never my favourite singer in those days but we loved him for his good looks.
I haven't seen a man as beautiful as him..
Yes, Ricky, was one of the most good looking boy and hottest singers I ever have seen! I love him, until I die! He was gorgeous!
Ich bin 1946 geboren...
Ich liebe das LEBEN... mit alllen auf and ab..
Ich bin ich nichts kann mich hindern...
One of the best videos ever. I love Ricky Nelson and Wish I was alive when he was.
Thankyou so much.
Lol, if i had a guy like Ricky, i wouldnt even look at any other guy again.
リッキーネルソン、1957年だぜ、若いよな。しかし歌は、いまだに新鮮、やはり名曲は不滅です。
Those were the good-old-days !!
in 40 plus years all their old fans will be searching for the music of their youth
Comme il est beau, jeune, il chante trop bien, ❤❤❤❤
I do love the Everly Brothers, but I'm a devout fan of Ricky Nelson.
I wish I were born in the '50s instead of '92. Awesome music. :D
Really love Freddie Mercury more for singing these in concerts and familiarizing me with this music.

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think i' m gonna cry
Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye, my love, goodbye
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure is happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby 'til he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been
Bye-bye love
Bye-bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry
Bye bye, love
Bye bye, sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye-bye my love goodbye
I'm through with romance, I'm through with love
I'm through with counting the stars above
And here's the reason that I'm so free
My lovin' baby is through with me
Bye-bye love
Bye-bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry
Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye-bye, my love, goodbye
Bye-bye, my love, goodbye
Bye-bye, my love, goodbye
Bye-bye, my love, goodbye

I liked the 4 Preps too. 26miles
Across the
Sea was my favorite. I liked Big Man too. Incidentally, the old guy introducing the boys was one of the detectives in the next years film noir "The Lineup"
Big Four Preps fan here. In fact, knowing that they were on this video is what brought me here!
I read somewhere that he did his famous eyeblink back then because he was nervous singing.
A real classic!
The teen who keeps smiling at him is cute :D Ricky was and always will be in our hearts :):):):)
It's nice to hear another version of this song. I always thought the Everly Brothers had the only version but obviously not.
Very nice very enjoyable x

there were so many good looking male signers back in the day... Ricky, Pat and Elvis are the stand outs... all had different appeals too
Magnificent thank you.
i wish that there was someone like him now.
que hermosa canción, tiene buen ritmo, es diferente a la interpretación de los Everly Brothers. Saludos PERU
That was good when I was young, and still is.
its great song reminds us about the great european culture.
Piękny głos - dzisiaj mija jego rocznica śmierci - wspomnienia na czasie.

I prefer the everly brothers version
***** surely everley brothers version is wonderful version. but this version is very fine
The crowd is so cruel. They don't listen at all. He sings the saddest stuff and they just clap and grin. Assholes.
Nelson: "I feel like I could die"
Crowd: " Yeah!" (enthusiastic clapping)
thus was from the tv show, this was scripted
Very Good
