In today's video, we're looking at strange samples in the world of rap music. Sampling is an artform in itself, hip-hop is a gigantic umbrella that contains a magnitude of different subcategories, and when you combine those things... you're bound to have a few crazy examples. Comment down below with some of your favorite cases!

samples favorite best worst reaction crazy weird hip hop rap ja rule fast and the furious stan eminem hatsune miku kill jill depeche mode dido stan eminem will ferrell kanye ye west jay z paris blades of glory toto nas new world best Видеоклипы
now i want a will ferrell and hatsune miku collab
they're the same person tho
Never knew how much I wanted this until now.
its a necessity at this point, at least a will ferrell vocaloid
Ok buddy
@@nonsmarts660 Maybe Kizuna Ai can step in
Em and Dido mashup is one the best samples and collaboration ever..it’s such a classic to me. Will always love it.
Top 10 rap songs of all time, Top 3 Storytell of all time and The best song of 2000s.
So much shitty grammar to unpack.
I never met anyone who thought that Africa by Toto was 'corny' or 'embarrassing'
Yeah such an L take
Leave it to Alfo to make wholesome song like Africa sound offensive and basic lmao
Yup... "corny," sure, maybe. But "colonizer" mentality... no.
It’s is definitely both corny and embarrassing. The lyrics make zero sense.
“Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus over the Serengeti"
Not only does that make zero fucking geographical sense but it’s also incredibly stupid.
It’s nearly 5 minutes of guy who can barely write lumping Africa into a monolith like it’s not the second biggest content on the planet full of diverse countries and people.
It's the internet you gotta virtual signal duhh
TM88 really is a funny producer, cause not only did he RE-sample that Miku song for Future's 712PM, but he was ALSO the one who added the Minecraft sound effects to XO Tour Llif3
As I was watching, I didnt know how the sample sounded like, but at 9:23 I INSTANTLY recognized it to be from that future song. And about the TM88 "Minecraft" sound effect, TM88 said in the Genius Deconstructed video for XO TOUR LIF3 that it isn't a Minecraft door, but instead just a regular perc sound, I dont recall exactly what he said but I'm sure it was something like that.
I love it as a rap and Vocaloid fan I love Big Boi, but I cannot stand most Future songs, but when hearing Miku pop up when the song played on my Spotify discover made me crack up.
@@m4dmxoidelles He said that he didn't know if the original drumkit maker sampled Minecraft, though, so it could still be true
1. 712pm is top 10 future HANDS DOWN
2. for the first few days of the song's release on Deezer, the Hatsune Miku sample was listed as an actual feature so when my friend was introducing me to vocaloid i couldnt stop laughing when i saw Future on a song with her. since then it's now listed as a Future solo song
So funny how i never realized that was the sample 712PM, i dont like you now :(
Hey, heads up, you shouldn't only credit the Vocal Synth (such as Miku) used when referring to a song using them. Vocaloids and other Vocal Synths are simply a virtual instrument with a culture around them, credit should be given to the producer as well. Lack of credit to the producer is disrespectful, and a big problem in the community. As a previous comment said, the producer of Data 2.0 is Aura Qualic.
Eminem has also used an even more insane sample than Dido. Good Guy features a sample of a COVER of a song from the TOKYO GHOUL soundtrack of all things
another favorite is Kendric's sample of Beach House's Silver Soul on money trees, not really because the sample is strange or doesn't make sense but because I'd never have known without being told despite loving both songs
Kendrick's sample of Sufjan Stevens' "All For Myself" on "Hood Politics" is another good example of an indie artist sample from Kendrick
Also the base song to 'the receipe' by Kendrick (Meet The Frownies by Mr. Twin Sister)!
one of the most unexpected samples i've ever heard in the genre is easily the hilarious sample that appears halfway through "Patrisse Cullors Stole My Lunch Money" by Ghais Guevara. I was in hysterics the first time i heard that beat switch
That man is so underrated with the way he samples
bro shoutout to you you just put me on
Ghais’s sample game is crazy
Holy crap what a sample 😭😭😭
Thanks for the Rabbit hole
The gentle giant sample on "strange ways" by Madlib and MF DOOM is a great one too
I was expecting you to mention 50 Cent - Piggy Bank, which samples Soviet pop singer Alla Pugacheva's song “Shakespeare's Sonnet 90”. How often do Soviet songs get sampled?
Nah, Africa by Toto is a classic. And I don't agree with your take about "Africa" being a narrow minded view of the continent of Africa. It's actually the complete opposite. Toto are very much aware of their lyrics meaning. Jeff Porcaro has even stated that the song is about ‘a white boy’ who is ‘trying to write a song on Africa, but since he’s never been there, he can only tell what he’s seen on TV or remembers in the past.’ And I don't see anything wrong with that.
And I've literally never heard anyone call the song corny or embarrassing. For me its one of the biggest and best representations of 80s music.
But to each their own I guess.
Bro not by discrediting the underlying points in what he's pointing out but his takes are just wild sometimes. Often I only hear those from him, then he brings up legit points in irrelevant times and I'm out here like bruh
Yeah but one needs to remember that Africa is a continent not one big country.
I just want to add this for those who don't know...
For that Kill Jill one, the Hatsune Miku sample actually came from the song "DATA" bu Aura Qualic and it's actually available as a usable project file packaged with FL Studio.
For the two African American men in Paris song, as a kid I didn’t know that was Will Farrell in that skit and have never seen Balde of Glory, so in my mind I thought it was like 2 guys listening to the song itself and when the other guy “no one knows what means” yada yada I thought it was suppose to be how the guy in the song stopped the song himself to comment on it and Will says his thing because he was actually digging the song. I don’t know why I thought that, but it was just my imagination going.
Me who loves Africa by Toto sad noises.
Uhh issnt the whole point of totos africa meant to be in the perspctive of someone who has only seen africa on tv, so its more of just an imagr character?
Fellas in Paris is a great song 😂😂😂
peggys sample of Milkshake by Kelis on Fentalyn Testers is crazy
One of my favorite samples is when K-OS sampled California by Phantom Planet in their song On the Run. I really love it because the song on the run sounds like it's coming from the perspective of someone who listened to California several times but never really understood the lyrics till they lived it. I also loved how J. Cole sampled Bad thing by Cults because the sample gives the song an eerie feel and I also like how he left out the creepy recording part.
Oh hell yeah, that song is awesome!!
I still carry a torch for this song, the live version is fantastic too. I was always shocked this song wasn’t a chart topper, the music vid with the no country for old men references to the total flip of a popular tv show theme.
Also song is “I wish I knew Natalie Portman” ;)
NAS sampling O Fortuna was both totally on brand and unexpected. It was taking a recognizable sample Bad Boy gimmick to a new level. Too bad it never really developed into a subgenre of its own. Imagine hip hop records sampling Stockhausen or Boulez.
One tiny correction: Eminem didn't sample the chorus of Dido's "Thank You". He samples the first verse! The Chorus goes: "I want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life". And that's the genius of this sample. Taking not the chorus but this verse. Also the mood of the verse is very depressive when the chorus really is an ode to that significant other that lights up Dido's world.
P.S. Jason Derulo recently showed on "Love sucks" how to not use the same sample.
I know Eminem is already on the list, but taking random seeming instrumental out of the middle of a almost 7min long Soul song (Labi Siffre - I got the) and putting "My Name Is" on top always fascinates me how it came to be
The fact that he immediately came up with the chorus as Dre played the sample too was impressive
you have such a specific style of video creation that is so comforting to me
I really like your videos! Great job as always!
My favorite samples come from ‘90s-era Timbaland. He would sample giggling babies in Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody,” Godzilla in Ginuwine’s “What’s So Different,” and the theme song from TV series The Prisoner was used in “We At It Again.”
I know this is a hip hop centered video, but one of my favorite random samples is Destiny's Child Independent Woman Pt 2. They use music from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons
Also Bootylicious sampling Stevie Nicks!!
The evangelion sample on operation kill Chet haze by jpegmafia/Devon hendryx is INSANEEE
Surprised Peggy and Danny aren't here, their latest collab is just insane when it comes about sampling. Heck, Danny and specially Jpegmafia both have insane samples by their own.
yeah but their shit is all about just weird samples and sounds not a good ass song that just has a bizarre sample
@@prodwyspbut it's AOTY
@@antiarezzo7630 💀💀💀💀💀
they sample crazy shit all the time so it's not "unexpected" anymore
@@antiarezzo7630top 3 for sure but it's barely halfway don't say for sure
when it comes to unexpected samples JPEGMAFIA comes up in my mind. ODB is famous rapper but the way JPEG used ODB's screaming sample was unexpected af.
it creates some of the most batshit crazy hype banger ever
I think there is almost an entire video of crazy weird freaky samples/sample concept just based on jpegmafia alone
That beat wasn't by peggy iirc
Beta Male Strategies has my favourite sample of all time
@@shmirko1665yeah peggy stole the beat
@@Mira2Coldnah bruh chef warren agreed then ghosted Peggy so he remade it. Not a fan of how Peggy handled it (telling chef to kill himself lol) but I don’t think he “stole” it
Annie Lennox's "No more I love you's" being sampled in Nicki Minaj's "Your Love" song is unexpected for sure.
this one is dumb, but the cowboy bebop samples in old school lofi changed my life.
What about that time when Just Blaze discovered Eurodance and had Eminem rap over What is Love? And also TI over Numa Numa for some reason.
Foreal
Thank you Afro Media
Dr. dre and Snoop Dogg's The Next Episode sampled a song called The Edge by David McCallum. And I think someone used Bob Dorough's Little Twelvetoes riff, too.
"Its provocative, it gets the people going." iconic
I really enjoyed this video and I am really glad I got a chance to do it. Thank you for all the goodness that you shared and I hope you have a great night. ❣️🤓
Tupac, Redman, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes, Ice Cube, 50 Cent, and Grandmaster Flash have a sample in common and it's one of the most ridiculously peppy songs going (It's one of my faves). Probably would've made a better video than talking about Kanye again.
I would say the craziest sample i heard was the song Rainbow Six by JPEGMAFIA in which he uses the meme of the guy crying and distorts it to the point of making it very eerie and then makes a song that can be genuinely unsettling but a good banger
Thank you for including hell of a night, love that song
Ok but the line about oil spills and birth control pills has aged like fine wine.
i'll always love how the ending of Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow samples S2E7 of Twin Peaks with the Giant's iconic "it is happening again" and the clicking of Leland's record player after it runs out. genius
That's gotta be one of the best samples I've heard of. I love tv show line samples and picking out that is just beautiful.
something i felt i should add onto the Stan segment of the video is the rest of the Dido track. The part that's used is the first verse. After that is the uplift where things lighten up musically and lyrically. Stan is denied that upturn. The few golden moments with someone whom he admires that makes life worth living.
I think that's a very cool (if dark) twist of the knife.
That Miku sample on 712pm had me tripping the first time I listened to it, was cooked in the car with mates (who don’t listen to vocaloid) and was going crazy like a mad man because of Miku in the back 😂
My favorite recent sample is JPEGMAFIA sampling the Escaflowne OP and making the most beautiful beat this year.
Another cool one is Still Tippin by Mike Jones using a 3-second classical sample. Goes hard almost 20 years later.
When he brought up Stan I thought he would mention how Rae sremmurd decided to turn it into a drill beat
10:16
Actually that's the first verse not the chorus of Thank You
Da king is back baby he neva miss
I'm genuinely shocked that Gucci Mane and Kanye's song Pussy Print wasn't mentioned, considering that it literally samples the Nazi black metal band Burzum. Ye didn't even produce it, which makes the songs sample even more strange.
Loved the Steely Dan sample in Eye Know by De La Soul
Never thought I’d see the day where someone earnestly tries to argue that Africa by Toto has problematic lyrics.
Xzibit got the best Toto - Africa sample use.
For me, that would be the drum sample of the song "ordinary joe", a remix of the song of the same name by Terry Callier by the late Nujabes.
When I found out about the sample through a sample breakdown video, I was shocked because it's so out of the left field. Try to guess which band he sampled from for the song.
KISS.
No, I'm not joking. He sample the drum break of the song Torpedo Girl by Kiss, from their 1980 album, Unmasked.
It isn't the first time I heard a metal song getting sampled, as there's one that sampled "No One Likes You" by The Scorpions.
Another song that came in my head is After Hanabi from the 2nd Hydeout Productions collection, also by Nujabes. Never has anyone make firework sound sounds more beautiful than Nujabes did, with addition of Dinah Washington's angelic voice. Highly recommend for listening.
Never been a drake guy but KMT off of more life sampled the main theme of sonic 06 which hella people couldn’t get over at the time
The part of “Thank You” that was sampled is actually a section of the first verse.
One of my favorites is tech N9ne samples the ost to cowboy bebop in his track "in the rain"
The glubaglagaglad in remote control
Fun lovin criminals sampled pulp fiction ❤
My favourite must be Touched by VAST sampling The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices' Pilentze Pee, a folk song sang by choir. It really elevates a beautiful song to a hauntingly beautiful one.
Just a little note: the part of thank you that is the hook on stan isn't the hook of thank you, but the first verse
One that sent a wave through my friend group was definitely Kanye sampling the globglogabgalab
Another new favorite is Nipsey Hussle sampling the Arctic Monkeys song "Knee Socks" for the song "Victory Lap". Awesome track! R.I.P Nipsey Hussle.
After I heard Kill Jill I never even questioned it. After I thought to myself "wait isn't that Hatsune Miku" and still didn't really give it a second thought. But you are right that is a weird ass thing to be sampling. Good ass song though
I get you may not know alot about what vocaloid is, but crediting a song to Miku, who's really just a instrument, and not the actual song creator Aura Qualic feels disrespectful.
Big boi and killa mike was running the edm samples from 2012 -2014
The “Jack and Diane” sample throughout OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson” comes to mind.
Peggy is a cheat code for this kinda stuff
kill jill is one of the greatest sample ive heard in forever
Shoulda put “Behind closed doors” by WC and the MAAD Circle when they sampled the life alert commercial
🔥🔥🔥
Have to call out Liquid Liquid's "Cavern," the sample of which makes up the spine of "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel.
It's not precisely unexpected except for how strange and obscure it is, but I love the Japanese commercial sample on Garbage Pale Kids from album of the year, SCARING THE HOES. Peggy and Danny twisted this random old clip into children cheering on this frantic, grimy, chaotic track and it all adds up to a bizarre banger
Big Boi is so criminally underrated.
You can’t have spoken all that time about Africa but not mention Pitbull’s sample of it on the legendary Ocean To Ocean
I love that Big Boi song!
Tee grizzleys “buss it all down” sampling Axel F
Video idea: Rank the top 50 all time albums on RateYourMusic from worst to best in your opinion
Jay Z’s sample of Aint No Love in the Heart of the City is a pretty great one on his song Heart of the City (Aint No Love). I wonder why he chose that title tho?
If you make a follow up you HAVE to talk about that one song from Kanye's Donda album that sampled Globglogabgalab for literally no reason
Kid Cudi samples the Jesu song Sun Day on Just What I Am. I hear it, but I can't find any credit or mention online and it's driving me crazy
That was a video of Venus Williams, besides that this is a fantastic video
My fav sample is Schoolboy Q on his song Man Of The Year. He sampled Cherry by Chromatics. Definitely worth checking out. I love the song Cherry.
someone’s probably already talked about this song but 6 god by drake sampling a song from donkey kong country 2 blew my mind when i heard about it first since i was (and still am) a pretty big fan of video game music.
Another crazy one is when Kanye West sampled Burzum, yes black metal Burzum, on Pussy Print by Gucci Mane
Em and dido is a classical.... which is why i was surprised you misses ditty and faith Evan's ( I'll be missing you).
bit old school, Cypress Hill sampling son of a preacher man
There was probably a problem at the post office or something
Toaster was and is a different way of saying gun so I don't know if that was your best line for nas
712pmby future has the same miku sample as kill jill
More music, less words.
Tupac sampling Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is
My favorite is What's it All For on the Cradle 2 Da Grave Soundtrack (2003). They rapped over 96 Quite Bitter Beings by CKY. I was laughing my ass off the first time i heard it.
I'm listening to it now; thank you for introducing me to this. This is fucking incredible lmfao
@@kaitlin9288 I'm glad my comment went to good use 😂
Didnt future sample miku for 712PM as well
Also the word "stan" means obsessed internet fan so Eminem really seen into the future with that. also also, the dude that played STan is the dude from final destination the first one.
People started using "Stan" like that because of the eminem song, thats not eminem being prophetic
i see Miku, i click
Kids these days- ghetto samples the longest yeah boi ever in its transition
My pick for most unexpected sample is "Fa$ter" by Playboi Carti building the whole thing on the frickin cave theme from Final Fantasy 8 😆
I see miku in the thumbnail I click
Weird samples there is Injury Reserve, Jpeg mafia, Earlsweatshirt....they can never be topped
Danny brown also
I thought we were getting Ashnikko :( Although, I don't think that was a sample, it was more like a duet... Daisy 2.0 feat. Hatsune Miku
Uhhh! Can we give a shout out to J.Dilla turning a cover of a sample into a banger. By that I mean the original and very creepy "Clair" by Gilbert O'Sullivan (1972) then covered by The Singers Unlimited with the same title, into Slum Village "Players". Which in my mind has to be one of my top samples next to Slum Villages "Yum Yum", which harkens back to the Boom Bap Era of production.
What about Thundercat sampling Sonic the Hedgehog sound effects?!
