Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "My Favorite Hip-Hop Samples Ever". I think sampling is a super fascinating part of rap, and all music in general. Taking something that already exists and putting your own spin on it can yield some high quality results. P.S. I'm using "interpolation" and "sample" pretty interchangeably. I know they're not exactly the same thing, but they're close enough for what I'm trying to talk about. P.P.S. some of these songs don't have music videos, so I attached other music videos/live performances from the same artist to make sure it didn't get too boring visually. I'm fully aware that the Runaway video is not the New Slaves video. Comment down below with your favorite samples!

It’s crazy how Kanye manipulates the vocals of songs to make it seem like the sample is saying something else (ex. 30 hours, through the wire)
And on the song Late
KSG 4th dimension
Drunk and Hot girls
Yeah, it's quite impressive, but I do believe Dilla did it better. Try his stuff.
He actually just pitched it up and it sounds like she says "through the wire" only because that's the name of the song. Hearing the original song, I now hear it as "Through the fire"
Sampling is one of the most beautiful things that has ever existed in music.
No question

Best sample song i ever heard is “I Wonder” by Kanye West. The fact he plays with the sample throughout the whole song with his vocals is just something unique. One of my favorite songs of all time.

since no one else will probably say it im just gonna leave this here "Citizen Kane - Blackrain" sample of "Bill Withers - make a smile for me"
@@eldenboy1612 ???
I mean, it's really only good BECAUSE of the sample, and if you listen to the original song, it's better in every way.
I wonder, or The Spins by Mac Miller
“Silver Soul” to “Money Trees” is a crazy sample to me because I liked both songs before realizing that Money Trees even sampled Silver Soul
That's what i came to say😤 that sample is fire
beach house silver soul to kendricks money trees is probably my favorite
that song aged like fine wine
you made me v happy, thank you

That's thanks to a slight up-pitch of Etta James' voice from her MY FUNNY VALENTINE.
my third favorite graduation song
not shit compared to through the wire
My favorite is probably “Bound” by Ponderosa Twins plus 1. One part of the chorus was sampled in Kanye West’s “Bound 2”, and the other part was sampled in Tyler, the Creator’s “A BOY IS A GUN*”.
Finally found it
@@ori7202 hahaha me to
One of my favorites too
Kanye's sampling of Strange Fruit by Nina Simone in Blood on the Leaves is probably my favorite
In all honesty, the entire sample structure in yeezus is absolutely legendary, one of my favourites to this day
@@pranavp8709 Yes i think one of his best constructed albums
billie holiday, not nina
I personally didn't like it, the original vocals were haunting and terrifying, but he pitched them up to sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks. But to each their own.
@@douglassmithe9799 her vocals aren’t pitched up tho
Another one of my favorite samples was in Kendrick Lamars DNA where it samples a small piece of a news anchor who was reacting to his album “To Pimp a Butterfly” where it samples him saying “This is why I believe that hip hop has done more damage to young black people than racism in recent years” I thought it was a brilliant sample imo

The King Crimson one in Kanye’s Power has got to be my favorite. I had heard the original song and the first time I listened to power my jaw literally dropped
It also had "Afromerica" by Continent Number 6 and "Its your thing" by Cold Grits
The drums going into the beat went incredibly hard
My favorite sample is from 4th Dimension by Kids See Ghosts (Kanye and Kid Cudi). It uses a 1930s Christmas song so perfectly and makes it sound so good.

"Daft Punk make their own beats"
Those who said it are so innocent, so naive.
They kind of do both.
@@Bad_Chemicals702 daft punk is mostly samples sped up to the club tempo range and they really just add the beat like any other artist
exactly, Daft Punk are some of the laziest samplers around. See Robot Rock's sample of Release The Beast by Breakwater...
@@clohan84
Don't discredit Daft Punk like that
@@clohan84 you literally picked their laziest song and tried to sell daft punk as lazy samplers based on that. They are possibly some of the most creative samplers out there. Face to face, harder better faster stronger and basically the whole Discovery album prove that.
Always loved Drake's "Nice for What," and its Lauryn Hill sample. "Ex-Factor" is a pretty good song by itself as well
My favorite kanye sample is definitely Devil in a new dress. The beat sends me to heaven every time, and then the guitar kicks in and I'm fucking dying of joy and beauty.
Surprised you forgot the "Bound" sample from "Bound 2" and "A Boy is A Gun."
That is something else completely.
💯
And they both take from the two separate parts of the same song without really colliding. The Samples on IGOR are stunning

I was going to say the Bound 2 sample... I find myself singing the sample more than even the words to the actual song, it's so good

I wanna see someone who thinks sampling is easy try and make a hit like Stronger.
It takes a lot of knowledge of music theory and creativity.
True
Do most people who make beats know music theory? (Not talking trash btw)
@@doofy3111 I don't
Doofy no, most rappers (and successful musicians regardless of genre) don’t know much about music theory
@@doofy3111 What Arthur said. Also, beside the music theory there is a lot of technical knowledge that would make it actually sound good.
Don't cry by j Dilla is imo the greatest and most creative use of sampling, to show the sample first then completely switch it up mid song is fantastic
You sir are correct
Bound 2 by Kanye West or Rapp Snitch Knishes by MF DOOM might be my favorite. I love how MF DOOM samples a few old movies through all of MM..FOOD. It is such a good album and very well produced

Kanye sampling Bon Iver's Woods and making Lost in the World is an easy fav
Ka's sampling of sword clashes for his beats on Honor Killed the Samurai is also fantastic

IGOR has alot of samples, each sample is a brick, it helps to build up the theme of the song.
Prettymuch all of daft punk's discovery album had sampling used. Face to face is an absolute masterclass in sampling. Tracks from the 60s-90s brought together to make something that sounded decades ahead of the time it was released
New slaves sample, the glory sample and bound 2 sample will never fail to give me chills
I like the bound 2 one because it was also used in boy is a gun which is also an amazing song
the new slaves sample is an amazing song, but he basically just used the original as it is and sang over it, so it's not that impressive to me
ljm _ 48 _ Kanyes version somehow sounds so much better though
ljm _ 48 _ it may not be impressive but the singers vocals he laid on top of the sample was godly and is better than the original in my opinion
I can’t listen to Bound 2 because the “uh huh honey” just makes me cringe so much everything else about it is great tho
Madlib is a genius when it comes to sampling.
Kanye too
Just listen to Eye and tell me that nigga aint the messiah

j dilla pete rock and madlib all tied for the greatest samplers of all time
1:23 The biggest gripe I have about people "Bruh Kanye trash, stole daft punk's song." -ing all the time is that That Daft Punk song is a sample of Edwin Birdsong's "Cola Bottle Baby". Music has always done this, sampling isn't new nor is it Rap exclusive. Shit, in classical music we'd just call it a "motif".
the new slaves sample has to be my favorite sample of all time. every time i hear that I just start levitating to another dimension

Twisted dark fantasy simply the best album in Kanye style transition
Check out J.Aubrey's video on kanye west. Its not entirely music related but its a great (hour long) video on kanye's life and musical progression starting from childhood
He writes trite lyrics and doesn’t play any instruments proficiently. What qualifies him as a musician? He’s a fairly talented producer but that’s not the same thing. An editor is integral to a good film but that doesn’t make them an actor.
@@marfungthompson1207 Bro just said Kanye isn't a musician. If you don't like him and claim his lyrics are "trite", that's a different thing, but even producers are musicians, who fall under the definition of being musically talented.
The sample that got me hooked on tracking down samples is the sample on "Paper Planes" by MIA. Diplo built that beat on a sample from the Clash's song "Straight to Hell" and I absolutely love both tracks.

Kanye west’s sample on bound 2 is still amazing to me
Kanye takes a great hook, adds a beat, raps over it and adds a drop, only to have that drop resampled into a Dance Hit by Sigma. Bound 2 was made by what he sampled yet another part of the song was sampled to make another hit. Amazing
My favorite sample has to be Kanye sampling a Christmas song from the 30s and tying it into the beat for 4th dimension in KSG

Kanye’s samples on his first three albums are insane to me. My favourites are on Gone, I wonder, Champion, The glory, Goodnight. Insane.
Bound 2 and father stretch my hands part 1 have some of the greatest samples ever. I don't think people realize how damn hard it is to sample.
You’re really gonna talk about samples that the producer changed and not mention how someone saying “where the islands go” got turned into “30 hours”

The Isley Brothers - "Footsteps in the Dark" being flipped for Thundercat - "Them Changes" and Ice Cube's "Today was a Good Day" is pretty legendary. Also love Michael McDonald - "I Keep Forgetting" being flipped into Warren G's - "Regulate".

That's one of the only songs that has ever made me actually cry. It's legit beautiful
I rarely listen to full albums but IGOR is an exception to that
J Dilla's "Don't cry" might be the best sample i've ever heard, dude chopped the song perfectly so the beat could go faster without speeding up any part, and the most insane part about that is that he perfectly sampled it just by hearing it, that song might be one of the best songs i've ever heard too, if you can listen to J Dilla's "Donuts" please do, it's a little bit over 40 minutes and you won't regret spending that time on it, it's just a masterpiece
Top 3 songs of all time!!
He chopped it so that he only used the kicks and snares in the track. A really interesting technique.
& the fact j dilla changed the bpm mid song was mind blowing like who tf does that?!
Don't Cry is what every sample-based musician looks upon with envy.
Great video man I loved this shit
One of the best I e ever heard and how intricate the sample is Easy Like Sunday Morning being sampled and chopped to be Hey Ma
The one thing this video is missing is a J Dilla beat. That dude had such an extensive library of musical tastes to pull from and was truly a perfectionist. Gone too soon
The sample of “thank you” in Eminem’s “Stan” is so good
My favorite sample is nujabes - Feather that samples Yusef LATEEF "love theme from the robe" the sample is from 2:05 to 2:12 and it is crazy how a small segment can create the foundation to another song so beautifully.
MF DOOMs Rap Snitch Knishes comes entirely from a 10 second snippit from a solo section of a cover of Space Oddity by David Matthews. then theres a similar instance in the song Feather by DJ Nujabes where the core piano melody is sampled from a solo section of a song by yusef lateef called "Love Theme From The Robe". Both samples can be found around the 2 minute mark on each of the original songs and its really cool to hear how seemingly insignificant they are in them yet so important in the songs they get sampled into.
Madvillainy sample of Frank Zappa and The Mother's "Sleeping in a Jar" in Meat Grinder is one of my favourites.
I love Prog Rock and Madlib really likes sampling prog and jazz fusion, and few people do that.
Madlib samples prog holy fuck that’s cool
Madvillainy. One of the best
Being a MF DOOM and Zappa fan I can say, me too.

Madlib's Invasion of Blue Note is also something else. The way he interprets jazz is amazing.

My favorite Kanye samples are “Gone” and “Otis”. I love that he uses two great songs from one of the best singers.
OTIS BEST SONG EVER
This is a great video and I love the concept. Being one of the most explosive and somewhat sad endings in the sampling world, the story of "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve and it's tie to the Rolling Stone's "Last Time" is definitely significant. You should consider making a video on that story alone.
4th dimension by Kanye and Cudi, I love how they go at the end "yeah, just take this little tune here, repeat it, and that's enough for a record"
