Thank you GS for uploading this high quality content so frequently. Every single one of them is just so incredibly immersing, making me forget the troubles of life for a short time. It really means a lot to me❤.
The XP-55 was kind of designed around this principle (matter of fact, it's not easy to distinguish the back from the front) however its swings were swept backwards and not forwards, which did give it off a bit
One additional problem with forward swept wings is one of control, as the wing deflects under load the AOA increases, applying more load to the wing and forcing the aircraft to turn tighter. A rear swept wing deflects but the AOA decreases, so the pilot has to give more input. An analogy would be FWD vs RWD cars - the forward swept wing is like a RWD car that tends to oversteer, it's manageable, but requires far more experience and control than the FWD car and it's tendency to understeer.
The difficulty with FSWs is that tip stall always occurs before the root, due to the way spanwise twist is distributed under load for a conventional span/rib/skin structure, unless such severe static washout is employed that most of the wing is not loaded at lower lift levels. The technology which makes such a design feasible is composite wing structures, where ply layout can be used to create dynamic washout under vertical tip deflection. NASA began to investigate both the aerodynamics and the structures of these designs in the very early 80s, when both technologies were nascent. The Soviets did not have access to this structural technology at the time, so could not make the design close then.
It's the other way round. On FSWs the root stalls first, before the wingtip does. That's in fact one of the reasons the design retains roll control at high angles of attack.
I learned about stress and structure at flying college. We learned a lot about bending and bending relief. The pylon mount on airliners is great at damping gusty wing bending. Swept wings naturally bend to reduce tip loads. A reverse sweep like this does the reverse, it will increase wing angle at the tips and increase tip loading. A bit crazy really- you have to make it so strong to cope it will weight far too much. Just a dumb idea.
Your low tone but loud voice combined with the eerily fascinating music and the 90s era film of a failed soviet project gives a weirdly interesting vibe. Great documentary.
The Su-47 and X-29 are some of the few planes that you can make correct “pretend” hand plane gestures as you move your thumb and pinky out to make the forward swept wing appearance ;)

maybe because they have no use for an aircraft that has to be limited to 6g's and is a logistical nightmare to keep in the air? I too once thought this thing was likely the future of aircraft design...then i read up on it. By the time material science catches up and allows this designs wings to stay on the aircraft above speeds it currently cant....the other aircraft designs will incorporate those same new materials and go even faster and be more stable. And extremely high off bore sight weapons will be employed in 6th gen fighters so a high AOA aircraft that has to be limited to 1.6m is just utterly pointless in future air combat.
@@Simbirsk2130Not sure where this comparison comes from, they don't even have remotely similar designs besides having canards. The benefits of flight performance begs for a return to variable geometry examining forward swept at subsonic for maneuverability and backwards swept to increase velocity at supersonic.
