The 1980 movie The Final Countdown a Nimitz class aircraft carrier goes back in time, ending up the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. When they cannot find a way back, decide that they must defend the nation, so they launch all of their fighters to confront the incoming Japanese attack planes. We never got to see the battle because the time vortex that brought them to 1941 re-opened, sucking the aircraft carrier and her airborne flight wing back into the present day. I, and many people who saw this movie, and others in the comments would love to see how this battle would’ve played out.
I recall that there was a real risk during filming of the Tomcats ripping the wings off the “Zeroes” they pass just from the shockwave. Don’t know if DCS models that sort of thing but it would be incredible to see.
The thing I think would make this especially horrifying for the poor bastards on the receiving end of this is that unlike an F22, the A-10 doesn't look completely alien compared to what was standard back then. So there's one plane doing the work of like, a whole squad.
Was just thinking to myself "yah, this is brutal. Gruesome. Fun yes, but still".. Then the solo guy in the field shows up. Following up with "yah, I don't feel good about that." Perfect statement!! Thanks for the vids!

Remember when you ran in on the Tiger from the rear that you had to shoot through that big-ass engine block. You basically wiped out a German tank battalion.
He didn't have to shoot _through_ the engine block; if you watch the reverse view of his second pass, it looks as if he clipped something shooting through the engine deck to start an engine fire -- which basically nullifies the contract the crew signed to fight that particular vehicle, even given the fire extinguisher inside the tank.
I think there's a whole campaign in here. Small NATO airbase inside France (or England) suddenly gets transported back to 1943-44 and you have to launch air/land/sea missions from there. F-16s against Me109s, A-10s against German tanks/infantry - bunker busting D-Day invasion - would be amazing.

The only very minor criticism I'd possibly have is if the A-10 was in contact with ground forces - they wouldn't be able to give him modern coordinates for a strike. They'd have to use grid reference, and either the A-10 using that older system, or the pilot would need a map on his knee. There was no GPS back then. Though INS could be programmed with coordinates, the accuracy reduces with aerobatic maneuvers. But the good old "There are 3 enemy tanks just east of the church!" would actually be adequate instructions for Hog pilots. His sensors would pick them up easily enough. The absolute payload limit for a B-17 was, with the rarely-used external bomb racks, 17,600 pounds, although it would reduce the combat radius even more than the 8,000-pound internal maximum load. So one A-10 could deliver the same payload as a weight-limited B-17, albeit as you describe with a much more precise delivery; the A-10 could deliver bomb-by-bomb targeting, while the B-17 could only set drop count and interval, so you could drop, say, four bombs at a time a half-second apart, then you'd have to swing _way_ out so that, when you turned around, you'd have enough time for the Norden bombsight to settle -- and even that much would have put an enormously-higher load on the bombardier than they were trained for -- under normal circumstances it was 'pickle the whole load'.

The 82nd ABN Division used to do a capability show called The CAPEX back in the 80s. 82nd was my first duty assignment in 84 but I only got to see one CAPEX. Two things absolutely terrified me. The cluster bombs the A10 dropped and the Vulcan 20mm in an anti-armor roll where they could engage ground units so long as they had military equipment such as canteens and BDUs. I jumped into Panama and I saw Vulcans absolutely demolish a multi story building with troops inside. Nasty. I fought in Afghanistan 03-10. The advances not only in targeting but in explosive power was insane. Imagine what we’ll see in another 25 years.

Before would have been cool too. The Jericho trumpets on the Stukas were pretty effective psychologically - imagine the abject terror an unknown aerial beast bearing down on you would create as it spread its fiery angelic wings while it laid waste to your men.
I remember in RV 92, if an A10 saw you, you were dead. Even dropping flares, they friggin hit our APC'S , some guys even caught the para flares ontop of tgeir APC'S. bloody deadly pilots flying deadly aircraft.
The Hummel was an arty, the Ferdinand was a tank destroyer
A pair of Bf-109K or Fw-190D would be a "nice surprise", at the end.
In the movie "Flight of the Intruder" they said: "Pickles Hot!", as far as I can remember.
I think a pair of any of those would take the A10 down
if gs has missiles left then no.
Did you just do the Wilhelm (appropriate name here) scream for that German trooper?
10:50 "It's this guy, look at im'..."
That guy just auditioned to be the main character, unfortunately for him he's just going to end up in the credits as "Bologna Mist Cloud #72".
wondering how infantry guy in front at 8:35 wasn't over pressured by the tank behind him firing that 88mm.
Loving this series. Keep up the good work mate and thank you.
GS UPLOADED
11:10 I had flashbacks to the guy in the portapotty getting bombed.
New challenge: fire only one or two 30mm rounds at each target and see if you can be accurate enough to hit each time!
can the A-10 even fire in single rounds??
i really have to say theose ground shots were pretty impressive and worked so well with the immersion
German 105mm SP howitzers were Wespes (Wasps). The 150mm SP gun was called the Hummel (Bumblebee).
when i was reading a lot of classic battletech as a late teen i was fantasizing how a single battlemech would've changed the outcome of WWII battles.. these episodes are so amazing - thx GS!
Thank you for doing this A10 video- as a vet I have a very personal connection to this guardian angel so please keep the A10 videos coming
You've read my mind, this is exactly what I had in mind after watching yesterday's video.
Marvin the Martian after flying an A-10:
"This Earth craft is better than my Illudium Pu-238 Explosive Space Modulator! The Earth-shaking kabooms are just so satisfying..."
So overwhelming, reminds me of that song Napalm Sticks to Kids. Look it up.
I'm not sure the soldiers at the end would scream for joy. Imagine seeing a strange plane that disintegrated enemy troops fly over your head and drop something strange
The Douglas A-26 Invader was the A-10 of its day. One version had twenty 50 cal machine guns facing forward. Rockets and plenty of guns and rockets and the ability to deliver and come back on target within a minute.
How cool was that! Love the A10
That was pretty much what I expected would happen. Thanks GS
I've always wondered what it would be like to have an A-10 in WW2. This is awesome! Thanks.
The A10C is such a fun plane to fly great video mate hello from Australia
8:30 - German soldier saying, " WTF was that?? "..
WCMDs use an INS with an initial correction from the jet just prior to release, so I *think* they would work.
If anyone remembers the movie, "The final countdown" where the USS Nimitz finds itself back in time in 1941 just hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Imagine what a carrier like Nimitz could have done to the Japanese navy in 1941.
Puttin ur amazing merch on the christmas list ! ! Love your content brotha.
Hey brother, this is your bread and butter- doing these anachronistic, completely awesome scenarios that are just pure FUN! As small boys this is the stuff we fantasize about and are intrigued by: having a scoped AK-47 or (insert bad-ass weaponry here) in the civil war…YES please! Below are many great concepts. Just sayin, for boys and men alike, these are innate feel good scenarios. Love the channel!
love the wilhelm scream by that lone kraut getting ventilated
The Willhelm-scream 😄 LOL. Thank you for another, as always, great video! If I saw an A10 being unfriendly, be in WW2 or any other time-period, while I was on the ground, I would try to surrender. If I didn´t have something like a shoulder-mounted Mega-Stinger missile or could fire an nuclear-tipped AAA-shell 😅. Br
Thank you for the A-10 content GS!
