I just rotate my figures due to small space. Half of them are sitting in boxes for two months or so. Then I move boxed figures on shelf and I put current display in boxes. I don't have many (around 25 I think) so the hassle is minimal.
That is a good alternative plan. My spare room is like that warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Stacked to the ceiling with boxes, some of which I have yet to open and actually lay eyes on the toy inside. Yes I am a toy collecting sinner.
It’s easy not stick to the game plan when you’re always tempted on collecting and so your videos give us precious advice. From my perspective I collect only to display for my family to enjoy after all they see these figures the most.
When bought in to the RestoretheSnyderverse movement, I wanted to build a Hot Toys and 1/6 scale collection dedicated to both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Avengers. I wanted to keep it small. But life got in the way. I had to find a new place to live after I finished my term at community college. As a result I sold the figures I’d bought for myself. I sold Batman. Wonder Woman. And Superman. Hopefully now that I’m starting University, I’ll have some money to find a comfortable place to start a new collection.
@@Brotherofthe4thCompany unfortunately there will come a time when we have to sell to make room. I think in the end it’s a journey as you said and the end result is to be able to display your collection to make your home “your home” and as Yoda says “size matters not”
Mistake 1: collecting backwards. When I first got into the hobby, I paid 600 for war machine mk 1 only for the reissue to be announced 3 years later. Paying 500 for batfleck only for the 2.0 announced 6 months later. Mistake 2: breaking my initial rule of only collecting diecast ironmen. Really wanting to have a representation of each hero from the infinity saga finally got to me. Mistake 3: it's hard to explain briefly but it's starting the hobby at all. No one could've imagined how bad the economy would become and while I can still collect without severely impacting my budget for the more important things like food, medicine, gas, etc, the fact that a hot toy costs the same as 4 bulk items from costco because of inflation, supply chain etc, is flat out ridiculous. Great video as always Keco!
Oh sweet summer Keco!...all great points especially the most important point, buy to enjoy and not invest. At the end of the day these are just toys for adults to pose and display just like when we were kids except more expensive and detailed since we can afford them now as working adults.
My mistakes : 1 not joining the community earlier ( fb groups ,following more streamers ) before getting stuck with a PO on TW 😅. 2 - starting my built of figures projects without asking more experiencing people in those groups , getting me a Phicen fem body I didn’t like at all ,lol. 3- listening to the people in the groups , despite the actual manufacturer company of the figure I wanted to body swap telling me it won’t work , people in the groups insisting it will , only costing me …. And almost costing me the destruction of the armor of my grail ,only to fail as the armor is too tight and it won’t ever fit another body.
You always get a presumptive like my brother! Years ago my wife opened my eyes to my to the fact that my Harbor Freight tool rack cost 10 times less than just one of the figures that sat on it. My collection and display have come a long way since then;)
1/6 community sometimes feels like a high school, people will spend money on new clothes just to MAYBE get let in the cool groups or atleast get some compliments (likes) you hit a lot of these points well! 🙌🙌
My biggest opp is FOMO. Sadly even buying in advance doesn’t really avoid that FOMO feeling. I’m only paying attention to low stock or waitlist items going up in price when I haven’t secured one myself. Then I start looking for the next order 🤦🏻♂️
Amazing advice and points for new and veteran collectors. Your honesty and transparency is always refreshing and appreciated! You are one of the best! Keep it up brother!! 💪🏻
I have met people that spent $50 - 100 on 1/6 actionfigure parts like jackets or coats. But these people don't wanna spent $5 on clothes for themself. Running around in rags basically... It's all about priorities and first thing you learn in this hobby is patience and how to deal with being let down.
I mostly follow all of these. One thing I did from the getgo, after doing research for several years (I told myself for a long time I do not need these figures), I limited my field of collection. Only one franchise (Star Wars), and out of that mostly only one character - Jango Fett. But with a selection of his children (as we all know, several millions of those). Which still leaves tons of options. Every one of these gets still heavily judged my me whether it deserves a spot in my collection. An example: my goal is to have a 1/6 representation of what I call "core Clone Troopers". One of those undoubtedly is Commander Wolffe. I really like the Sideshow version (I am aware of their weaknesses, and found a way to solve these problems.). As he has been sold out long before I got into collecting, I set myself a limit price, which in my mind was laughably low. Never thought I would find one. But last Christmas, after two years of looking him up in ebay every now and then (and finding that the offers were far too high for my liking), I found one. Good condition, a little under my price limit. What he was missing: one of his packaging clamshells. Which I could not care less about, as I collect these figures exclusively because it brings me joy to look at them. So I snatched him up in an instant. Another thing I considered to get a Hot Toys version if they issued this character (considering they did Captain Rex and Commander Fox. Think there is a fair chance for Wolffe). However, other aspects that I did not really like are Captain Rex's headsculpt from Hot Toys, and the possibility that Hot Toys might not add the variety of accessories like Sideshow did, but instead do multple versions of him. Which I did not like much. So if possible, I wanted to go for Sideshow. Now there are exception to this "sensible" approach. I got my black suit Boba Fett at full scalper price. Somehow I saw him and forgot him again (stupid, I know). Then I ran into the excellent review and presentation from Boston Collectors. Ouch, I thought. Should have gotten him at retail. But alas, scalper price it was for me. Do not regret this one bit. One exception of me limiting my collection: for some reason, I like the mature random Jedi here and there. So Alec Guiness Obi-Wan, Count Dooku and Qui-Gon live in an Ikea shelf chatting about old times. Right now, I am contemplating Baylan Skoll. Think he might fit nicely in there. So you can make exceptions to your rules. But I try to be sensible even about this.
I think it’s okay to buy figures if you don’t have the space to display them. People (like myself) plan to move at some point to a larger home with plans to display them all. Why pass on figures I love I may never have a chance to buy at retail years down the road if I passed on them now? I’m with you 98% of the time, Keco. But not on this take.
Love seeing your videos! I get so tired of watching review after review so seeing these types of videos (basically your whole channel) are so hype. Nothing against reviews I binge watch those too haha
#4 hits home! I made it a rule to NOT REPURCHASE a figure I’ve sold. Police shootout T800 and Battle Damage Robocop single pack 😢. Sold the two pack Batman Returns figure… traded my original 89 DX Keaton for the 92 Keaton single pack. The only loophole I’ve used
I sold my original collection due to a surprise medical bill. Now im collecting backwards. And i have to draw the line on prices and be patient. Shop around, look at thd market. Look at the materials used and age of it...will a higher price generally point to better qaulity.
My number one rule of 1/6th collecting: Never preorder day 1! I have many ideas for my displays but mayby 90% of those get scrapped and i didnt really need that figure i wanted earlier. I passed Bo-Katan, Bad Batch, Armorer, Anakin, Ahsoka to say the few. After 2 or 3 months if i still feel i want that figure i preorder it. Any fig is rarely sold out by then in Sideshow
Ik i almost pulled the trigger on a rouge one vader. And thanks to my patience they released the obi wan show and i knew they were gonna release a Vader
Impulse POs+FOMO = losing lots of NRDs. This is my second year collecting, and promise myself no more losing NRDs. But... I let myself into customs world 😂 thats a rabbit hole. Ill play the customs game this year and Im out to normal buying. Purchasing a figure when released, no more modifying. Next year ill invest into my display, my only PO that goes to 2025 is inart 4 pack Joaquín Jokers. Oh my, Ive made lots of these mistakes you mention... But im here to learn 😅
Thank you again for another refreshing, enlightening video, my 1/6 spiritual guru. I did have a question. Right now we're experiencing a downturn in the hobby with many selling off figures for less than retail. For someone who's been in the game for a long time. Is this a rare, unprecedented time, or merely cyclical? Do you think we'll go back to a time when something like a Hella, or Jyn Erso, goes back to being like $600+? Will an Inart Joker deluxe climb back to its $1k retail price? Or with all the 2.0s and re-releases, demand probably won't ever go back to its halcyon days when many buyers were experiencing sticker shock, trying to buy a DX11 for $800-$1k?
Oh man I’ve had to skip out on great deals for some figures because I had no room. That sucks having money to spend but no where to put your hot toys 😢 on the bright side I was patient and was finally able to get my grail. Picked up the DX 13 for a great price now I need more 😅
Speaking of collecting backwards, I'm newer into the 1/6th community and have recently discovered the sideshow clones (love clone troopers) what are your thoughts? They worth the money or best stick with hot toys?
I feel like a lot of the community makes the mistake of buying stuff thinking it's going up in value, when in reality this isn't an investment. Go buy some stocks or real estate if you're looking to invest. Bang on! Mistake #6...investing in Joe Schiesty.
Don’t get knock offs mixed up with third party, because third party means unlicensed, and sometimes yes they are better than hot toys unfortunately I guess, I think it’s a win for a overpriced doll.
